welcome[edit]

Welcome!
Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. The following links will help you begin editing on Wikipedia:

Please bear these points in mind while editing Wikipedia:

  • Please respect others' copyrights; do not copy and paste the contents from webpages directly.
  • Please use a neutral point of view when editing articles; this is possibly the most important Wikipedia policy.
  • If you are testing, please use the Sandbox to do so.
  • Do not add unreasonable contents into any articles, such as: copyrighted text, advertisement messages, and text that is not related to an article's subject. Adding such unreasonable information or otherwise editing articles maliciously is considered vandalism, and will result in your account being blocked.

Hi. Interested in your thoughts on this. Peter Damian (talk) 18:32, 22 July 2008 (UTC).[reply]

The Wikipedia Tutorial is a good place to start learning about Wikipedia. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and vote pages using three tildes, like this: ~~~. Four tildes (~~~~) produces your name and the current date. Again, welcome! --Newton2 13:10, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your edits on Britten! Always nice to see another good editor in classical music. You seem pretty adept at wiki-markup, have you been editing as an IP? Anyway, welcome, and feel free to ask me any questions you might have. Mak (talk) 05:03, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion[edit]

Hi. When you want to delete an article you have created by mistake, just add {{db-g7}} at the top of it. Bye. (Liberatore, 2006). 13:38, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings from the Opera Project[edit]

Hi, and thanks for your note. I hope you will join the project if you are interested in opera. Re. spolier tags, we had a big discussion about them (it's in the archives) and decided to take them out. On role/voice type/first cast tables we have a model which is at Il campiello. Let me know if you have any other questions, and once again welcome to WP opera! - Kleinzach 06:15, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Sound recording[edit]

I just noticed your addition of a sound recording to Curlew River. Copyright is complicated, and I don't claim to understand it completely, but I have two concerns - firstly, I think the excerpt might be a bit long to be fair use, but I might be making that up. Secondly, it is unclear what specifically it is illustrating. In order for its use to be "fair use" I think you need to describe the excerpt specifically, and show how it illustrates a concept. So, for instance, you could talk about the use of the flute and how it represents the Madwoman in this instance? Note that I haven't been brave enough to upload any fair-use music :-) Also, when you have only one item, you can just use the Template:Listen (I've already changed the template). Cheers, Mak (talk) 04:05, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your feedback--I was a little worried about the same things. I think/hope that the length is okay because it's not a complete track (the only concrete guideline wikipedia gives), and because the quality is a lot lower than on the cd. That's my story, anyway.
I know I'm lazy to upload it without incorporating it into the text, but I wasn't sure the upload would work. I'll certainly type up a little paragraph about it.

That sounds great, I understand your hesitation. Thanks, Mak (talk) 05:33, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A Midsummer Night's Dream[edit]

Thanks a lot for all your work on this article. It was my first article and I made a whole load of newbie mistakes on it and because it's quite obscure no one was there to clean it up. You've made it look a lot better and have added some good stuff too it, so thanks. You seem to be doing a lot of Britten stuff, so keep up all the great work. Cheers, Moreschi 19:02, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I don't really have any qualifications, but I do want to make a project out of the Britten. There's a used copy of Peter Evans' book I've got my eye on to steal some quotes. It'd be nice to have a little musical analysis of the bigger works.
But this week I've been slacking! Soon!

lower-case initials[edit]

(Posted on the Engineer Bob talk page:) Hullo. Is the category you added to the CIVIL warS a joke, or is there a movement afoot to allow lower-case initials? That would be nice, since in this case the typography was a conscious choice on the part of the creator. Dybryd 05:02, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • That category has existed for quite some time; Wikipedia recognizes that some articles should begin with a lower-case letter, but for technical reasons all must start with a capital letter. When I stumbled across this article today I added the appropriate note and category for you. Engineer Bob 05:08, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Albert Herring[edit]

Hi - I didn't see the discussion you refer to, but curious as to why you have deleted paragraph about Spenser? Tony 22:53, 14 August 2006 (UTC)Tony[reply]

I just don't think the friendship with Spenser is notable in terms of the work. Harry is a minor character and the role wasn't written for him the way (for example) Lucretia was written for Kathleen Ferrier or Oberon for Alfred Deller. Seemed weird to have a whole paragraph about some random kid when we don't discuss the ongoing relationship with Joan Cross or even Peter in the article.
You'll notice I also cut John Newton from the Curlew River page (sorry--I did give notice and wait a day for response). In that case, Newton didn't even originate the role, he was one of many boys who sang it. I left the note about David Hemmings on the Screw page, because in that case the detail did seem important to the meaning of the work.
Thanks for the article on the book--it's the first I've heard of it.

Attractive?[edit]

Hello - me again. If you read Britten's Children, it is very clear that all the boys Britten befriended were attractive. It is, I believe, an important aspect of Britten's make up. Tony 22:58, 14 August 2006 (UTC)Tony[reply]

Well, I haven't read the new book, but I have seen photos of some of the boys he took under his wing in Humphrey Carpenter's biography. Most seemed to be quite ordinary, skinny little kids. Of course Britten was attractED, but he had his own reasons for that, and I don't think they had to do with beauty.
Dybryd 23:09, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ps You're right about Tadzio being a Dancer. I never quite understood why Britten made the boy older i.e. 15, particularly as the original Tadzio that Thomas Mann fell for was 11/12 and yet he was older in the novella (13/14?). Death in Venice isn't one of my favourite's actually, may be because the book and Visconti's film had etched themselves into my brain. On the other hand The Turn of the Screw is brilliant and definitely adds something to Henry James' work. Tony 23:04, 14 August 2006 (UTC)Tony[reply]

Matthew Stadler[edit]

By the way, I put that "film critic" into his heading, but I'm not really sure he is a "film" critic. Maybe just a critic, or a journalist, or an essayist.... at any rate, I'll let you fix that Wjhonson 00:43, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would probably just say journalist. But I understand he is also a visual artist--the magazine he put out for a few years (which I never saw) was of graphic arts as well as fiction, and directed the illustrations for his first two books. That might be more significant.

License tagging for Image:Stadler-Nicholas.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Stadler-Nicholas.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 19:13, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:Cricket-bat.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Cricket-bat.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

Image:Stuart-murdoch.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Stuart-murdoch.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Chowbok 21:40, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

More replaceable fair-use images[edit]

Chowbok 01:44, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Does the ongoing fair-use purge actually conform to the fair-use policy?[edit]

I'm thinking no. The policy says:
"If unfree material can be transformed into free material, it should be done instead of using a "fair use" defense. [...] Neither photographs nor sound clips, however, can usually be "transformed" in this way. However, if the subject of the photograph still exists, a freely-licensed photograph could be taken.
So, must fair-use images be replaced if their subject is still alive? The policy immediately goes on to moderate this requirement:
"Always use a more free alternative if one is available. If you see a fair use image and know of an alternative more free equivalent, please replace it."
So, the policy does not require deletion of images where no free alternative is available. Replacing fair-use images with free ones is a worthy goal. Deleting fair-use images and leaving a blank is not,

Sappho[edit]

If you want to introduce such content, it is going to have to come with a reliable source, as the article is otherwise fully referenced, and introducing unreferenced content compromises quality. Thank you. - Samsara (talk  contribs) 01:12, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Trisha Meili[edit]

I didn't know where else to bring this up.

User:70.23.199.239: "Thus, Meili was identified by white-owned media as the 'Central Park Jogger.'"

User:Dybryd "identification by the media - not clear that all media other than two newspapers and one radio station is 'white-owned.')"

I never made any such assumption. I was referring to a host of specific media organizations, all of which were white-owned, all of which sought to shield the victim from publicity, and which were where perhaps 95 percent of white New Yorkers (excepting those involved in, or friends or relations with people in the media, law enforcement, or politics) got their news on the case (all local TV news operations, CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox' national news operations, CNN, Fox News, New York news radio, the New York Times, Daily News, New York Post, New York Newsday and even the radical leftwing Village Voice). 70.23.199.239 22:46, 23 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Are those media organizations "white-owned"? Why do you think so? I became interested in the case through Joan Didion's essay "Sentimental Journeys" which focuses on the role of race in the way the case was reported and discussed. Glancing through the essay, I see that Didion writes: "one of the problems with not naming this victim: she was in fact named all the time. [...] she was named, in the days immediately following the attack, on some local television stations."
I'll add the bit about the TV stations (which Didion, annoyingly, doesn't list) to the article.

Fair use rationale for Image:Dickey-Deliverance.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Dickey-Deliverance.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 02:25, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unacceptable[edit]

Your recent edit of another's post is unacceptable. I've let your other personal attacks and incivility go. Keep this up and I will ask for others to step in. You can disagree with others and their actions without elevating it to the level of personal attacks, incivility, and needless hostility. --ElKevbo 18:54, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am trying to make Betacommand, Durin, and now apparently you aware that you have created an atmosphere of incivility on Wikipedia. That you are blind to this makes me sad for you and sad for Wikipedia.
I do think that Betacommands actions are, in themselves, inappropriate. The guideline he is crusading for is redundant and unnecessary. Applying it in any way would be disruptive to Wikipedia.
However. His aggression and high-handedness, and the fact that he is making threats of deletion against good faith editors when the guideline he is basing his threats on doesn't even have consensus yet, and is still under discussion, mean that an obnoxious editing style greatly compounds the problem that misguided administration creates. Dybryd 19:06, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome to hold and express your opinion, even if that opinion differs from my own and others'. But please help us keep the discourse civil! Your post above is an excellent example of how things should be said and expressed!

The policy of fair use rationales[edit]

Re: this comment.

I've noticed you've said something like this a few times on a few different talk pages. I thought you should know that you are actually incorrect. The fair use rationale requirement was a part of policy long before WP:FURG even existed. FURG is a guideline to help follow a policy, but the policy was there first. -- Ned Scott 21:31, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:Auntdanandlemon.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Auntdanandlemon.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 06:46, 17 July 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MER-C 06:46, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have perfomed a web search with the contents of Lilla Watson, and it appears to be a substantial copy of http://lists.cdu.edu.au/pipermail/csaa-forum/Week-of-Mon-20050110/000626.html. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. Yeah, it's a bit silly, but there is little that can be done. As far as the bot could tell, your article was a copy-and-paste of some other source after all. A few "silly positives" (I'm not calling those false positives, because there really was a copy) are pretty much unavoidable. — Coren (talk) 13:21, 12 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I know -- I'm being super-scattered as usual, seeing a million things to do and not doing any of them! Actually, I think the main push for the LGBT project right now ought to be getting conversion therapy up to the mark for featured status. Dybryd 03:40, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I feel your pain! Personally I have little current interest in moving article up from one to th next so I imagine there are others as well who could help on spot issues. Maybe add a task list to the talk page? Benjiboi 03:59, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

... yep, that term is utterly bogus! Good catch indeed :) - Alison 05:21, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV in National Labor Federation[edit]

I would like to ask you to provide more commentary on the article National Labor Federation as a disinterested party. None of the currently active editors has shown bad faith--but there are disagreements over style and content that are unlikely to be resolved with just two or three editors; the comments of an outsider with a passing interest in the article would be particularly valuable.Whosasking 18:39, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh man. I have a lot of sympathy for the work you're doing, but it seems like that article is a huge project in itself, and I have a lot of things I'm neglecting already. What about starting a Request for Comment? Dybryd 19:17, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's been listed on RFCsoc_list since 19 September. Thanks for stopping in, though. Sometimes I think no one looks at the page at all.Whosasking 22:20, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Added TOC and section header[edit]

Hi, i added TOC and a section header so table of contents is at top of your talk, hope it helps if not simply delete them. Benjiboi 22:11, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can we find common ground?[edit]

I do not think that Wikipedia coverage of pederastic history and theory is at odds with a responsible approach to LGBT topics, but I have a feeling you do. Care to discuss that? Haiduc 22:43, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not really! I of course don't think that coverage of any notable topic is off-limits, but I think your entire redefinition project is POV, and I think you know quite well that it is. However, I don't have the energy to argue about it, or to do extensive fact-checking on a subject I find depressing. So, basically, I'm not real happy, but I'm never going to do anything substantive about it, and you have little need to engage me in debate. I posted to the ANI discussion simply to make it clear that your statement on pederasty did not represent a consensus view within the LGBT project. Dybryd 20:17, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I make a real effort to question everything I do, and to be as objective as I can. My view is that pederasty is a neutral topic, with positive and negative aspects. It also happens to be integrated into the gay scene in Europe, where older adolescents are legally empowered to give consent to love relationships with adult partners. And it also happens to be the only real foothold homosexuality has in the domains of history, culture and philosophy, if you exclude the 20th and the 21st centuries. So I would like you to consider the possibility that you are doing a real disfavor to the LGBT sphere in Wikipedia by trying to drive a wedge between pederasty and modern androphilia (and may I say, an androphilia possessed of a queer fascination with depilated bodies and with guys calling each other "boy," and with "just legal" type porno). Anyway, I respect your wish to not engage in further debate, I will not be returning here unless you wish me to. Regards, Haiduc 02:27, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It would be very comical of me to try to drive a wedge between two imaginary categories! Dybryd 20:18, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image copyright problem with Image:Auntdanandlemon.jpg[edit]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Auntdanandlemon.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI 03:30, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I see you reverted the stub. I'm curious about the logic or this. Oratorios etc are usually listed as compositions - under the scope of Classical Music, rather than the Opera project. It's not that important but it affects bot runs. -- Kleinzach 04:04, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just thought the opera stub would better help the article make its way to the right editors - which I understand as the point of stub categories. The stub does say "or opera-related subject" and it's as a source of arias in the operas that the cantata is most notable.
It's not a big deal. "Composition" sounds okay, but again, stubs on vocal music seem more likely to receive informed attention from editors focused on opera than writers on classical music in general. Dybryd 04:10, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've now found another one so I've raised it as a question on the Opera Project. Many of us are active on both projects but the idea is to keep a clean division because of the bots - to avoid having to do a lot of preparatory work before doing a run. Thanks. -- Kleinzach 04:19, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please be civil[edit]

With regard to your post at Wikipedia talk:Non-free use rationale guideline, I see that you have been warned about incivility in dealing with this topic before. Our image policies are complicated and can be frustrating indeed. Not everybody agrees with them and the way they are enforced. Still, this is no justification for incivility on your part. Please try to work through the issues on the various talk pages and stay cool, stepping back as necessary. Lashing out like you did at the end of this post is only going to get you blocked. It won't change policy, and it won't make anybody sympathetic to your cause. Thanks! -- But|seriously|folks  04:00, 28 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's helpful for these folks to have it made clear how their actions affect the mood of the community. Swearing is a simple way of expressing this. I agree that civil interaction is devoutly to be wished for, but when civility has been tacitly breached, I think it's just more realistic to make that breach explicit. You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Homosexuality. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24 hour period. Additionally, users who perform a large number of reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring, even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing. Please do not repeatedly revert edits, but use the talk page to work towards wording and content that gains a consensus among editors. If necessary, pursue dispute resolution.

Maybe you guys should ask for a RfC on the content changes --Nsaum75 (talk) 01:04, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Awesome, let's waste energy on a big fake argument.
Josh is an experienced editor. He knows perfectly well what the issues are with his edit, and he also knows that when new content is disputed, normal practice is to work it out on the talk page rather than simply re-add it to the article.
Dybryd (talk) 01:08, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Conversion therapy / reparative therapy[edit]

Dybryd, on the Homosexuality article recently you changed reparative therapy to conversion therapy. I consider that a mistake, and I changed it back (you wrote in the edit summary, 'changing "reparative" -> "conversion" to match conversion therapy', but this is definitely not a good reason). I'm not quite sure about NARTH, but there's no evidence Exodus International advocates any kind of therapy except reparative therapy specifically. You might want to either seek a third opinion before reverting my changes, or else suggest some sort of compromise as an alternative, because I consider the wording you used to be quite misleading. Skoojal (talk) 09:30, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I don't really care, but in that section, "reparative therapy" seems to be being used as a general term meaning "therapy to alter homosexual orientation" -- with no mention of the theory of reparative drives -- even though the two examples given are organizations that practice reparative therapy specifically, I think they're just used because they're prominent. So it seems to me that using "reparative" here gives the impression that it's a generic term.
But, I haven't really been part of this ongoing dispute -- so go with whatever the consensus has been.
Dybryd (talk) 15:56, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A note -- you say you're not sure about NARTH. I've just been to their website, and their president is Joseph Nicolosi, who does indeed describe homosexuality in the terms of reparative therapy, and that outlook is all over their website even in articles where the word "reparative" is not used. Dybryd (talk) 16:57, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am not saying that the wording I used was perfect. Exactly what wording should be used can be debated. Perhaps the simplest and least controversial option would be to say that these groups advocate therapy to change sexual orientation without using either conversion or reparative. Skoojal (talk) 23:42, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The great Joan Didion[edit]

I see from your image uploads that you are apparently also a fan of Ms. Didion. I've read all of her works, and even have an autographed first edition of A Book of Common Prayer. Nice to see we have some common ground.

Best, Jeffpw (talk) 14:33, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know things can sometimes become heated on debates here. I just wanted to let you know that on my side, its not personal, though I may have come across as agressive, at times. I'm just suffering from general stress, though that shouldn't affect my civility. If I ever came across as bitey to you, my apologies. I hope that as our collaborative efforts on LGBT proceed, we'll come to know one another much better. You seem a solid, good-faith editor, which is a valuable asset here. By the way, my favorite Didion book is Play It As It Lays, though I am now putting myself through the painful; process of re-reading A Year Of Magical Thinking. Tough read, but well worth it, and strangely comforting to me at this stage of my life. Jeffpw (talk) 05:13, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I think that's a very good idea. Thanks for doing that, Dybryd. Queerudite (talk) 15:14, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Conversion therapy article[edit]

Dybryd, you recently suggested shortening the conversion therapy article by moving parts of it to the ex-gay article. Like many people, I thought that this was a good idea, but it didn't happen, perhaps because the conversion therapy article was protected. It has been unprotected now, so I think this would be a good moment to carry out your suggestion (I recently undid an edit that did the exact opposite of what you suggested, shifting even more material into that already too long article). On a related note: please archive some of the past discussions on the talk page, because that's also much too long. I'd do it myself, but I'm not quite proficient enough. Skoojal (talk) 00:15, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid I don't know what the formal process for archiving talk is either.
I'm a pretty weak reed when it comes to following through on any actual work here on WP, but I'll have a look at the ex-gay stuff.
Dybryd (talk) 03:17, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'll try and find someone who is able to do it. It would help if you would do the same; it's becoming steadily more difficult to comment there due to the length of the page, and the problems with that article are annyoing enough as it is without this additional problem. Skoojal (talk) 03:52, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
SCBC has been doing this again, adding massive amounts of information to an article that's already too long. Please talk to him and persuade him that this isn't a good idea. Skoojal (talk) 00:27, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Sexual orientation[edit]

I noticed you removed the autosexual and zoosexual but not the "Related articles: Paraphilia" section. I wanted to clarify whether that was your intent or not, because without zoosexuality I don't think it is clear how paraphilia relates to sexual orientation. Certainly, they both involve sexual attraction, but otherwise they seem completely disjoint. I am going to be bold and remove it, although I am little hestitant because of the recently contentious nature of the template. Queerudite (talk) 03:57, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I made only those changes that just about everybody had endorsed.
However, it's actually me who added paraphilia -- you'll see my rationale if you look over the talk page. Basically, a number of things that are asserted by their advocates to be sexual orientations are categorized by others as paraphilias -- so the two terms have sometimes been alternative ways of describing the same things.
But I'm not wedded to the addition at all -- especially not since after I added it, it was split off by itself into its own lonely category. The only thing I'm really set on for the template is that I think the neologisms should go.
What do you think about "pansexuality"? I've left it for now, although it's also a neologism, because it's one that seems to have somewhat broader use, and because like the other orientations it refers to the desired gender(s).
Dybryd (talk) 04:51, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Interested in your thoughts on this. Peter Damian (talk) 18:32, 22 July 2008 (UTC).[reply]

In general, I'm hesitant about something that suggests we need a special way of approaching articles on taboo subjects. The problem is not that different standards are needed, but simply that the ordinary standards too often fall by the wayside.
Of course, the POV creep in these articles is very clear, and I've appreciated your efforts to point that out in the recent pederasty discussion. But I'm not sure we need an essay that specially opposes POV creep just because it's happening on taboo sexual topics -- I think that sends the wrong message, because "taboo" is itself a POV word.
Just being as clear and factual and by-the-book as possible, and pointing out (again and again if necessary) subjective or biased language on the part of the advocates is, I think, the most effective way.
Dybryd (talk) 19:09, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There is little in there that you wouldn't find in the policy. But you have to hunt around for the relevant policy, here it is in one place. Plus not many people are aware of the way that definitions get messed around with to achieve the creep. We do need something. Peter Damian (talk) 19:18, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and 'taboo' is not a POV word! Peter Damian (talk) 19:18, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sexual Orientation Template[edit]

Thanks for telling me about the situation there. I support what I take to be your position, which is that listing 'zoophilia' and so forth as orientations is silly. I suggest that you might ask James Cantor for his opinion, since he seems to be interested in this sort of stuff, and is an actual scientist. Skoojal (talk) 06:40, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

May I suggest archiving your talk page?[edit]

There are auto archivers as well as doing it manually. I'm happy to help if you'd like. Banjeboi 23:22, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you've contributed to past discussions on the Template talk:Sexual orientation page and we are now in the process of noting which of several proposals might help resolve some current content disputes. Your opinion to offer Support, Oppose, and Comment could help us see if there is consensus to approve any of these proposals. It's been suggested to only offer a Support on the one proposal you most favor but it's obviously to each editor's discretion to decide what works for them. Image copyright problem with Image:Filloux.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Filloux.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.
