Books
Please give a little more information about the books for which you are creating stubs: you don't specify whether they are fact or fiction, or who published them, and in some cases like The Tin Scratchers there is more information about the book at Ion_Idriess#1945_to_1969 than there is in the new stub. Make an effort to learn how to do references properly. Do not simply throw everything into the hyperlink. Put the author's name first, library style (Last name, First name), then the date of publication in parentheses, then the title which should be the only thing in the hyperlink!, then the place of publication followed by the publisher. Put the page number next, then the ISBN. Like this:

If you want to, use templates such as cite book, cite web, or cite news. You can cut and paste these into the ref and simply fill in the fields.

I would like to appeal this blocking. I recognise that I can improve the quality of my citations, which can sometimes be neglected in my enthusiasm to make contributions to articles. This comes from a good place, not a malicious one. If I undertake to cite in the proper style from this point on and to respond to editors concerns within a reasonable time frame, can the block be overturned? Dutch, do you really want some help in formatting reference sources? I have a past career history of being a librarian for 30+ years and can help. Let's look at one of your citations to start. Here's your "take": Neely, D. (1967, Jan 16). Hathaway fed up with hefty extras. Los Angeles Times (1923-Current File) Retrieved from http://search.proquest.com/docview/155669816?accountid=13902.
The first thing all reference sources, regardless of the format chosen. will need, is to identify some basic elements. These can be summarized as: Author, Title, Publisher (and date, source of publication). The author(s) appear in alphabetical order by the main noun (last name first), so the author is correct: Neely, D. The title in this case is: "Hathaway fed up with beefy extra." (Note: the title of a periodical or journal is written in "sentence form: first word capitalized, the rest in non-caps, ended with a period, exclamation mark or other.) The actual publication in this case is Los Angeles Times (Note: use the full and correct title of a publisher, e.g. The New York Times, not "NYT" or "New York Times", and written in italics to differentiate from the title.) All notations (called tracings in reference sources) in the reference line would be set apart by periods (or full stops).
Depending on the style you will use, for example, the Modern Language Association (MLA) Style Guide (the most common style guide for literary works in the Humanities, such as reviews), the date either appears in the publishing tracings or associated with the author as in the American Psychological Association (APA) Style Guide, used primarily in the Sciences). The citation would then read: Neely, D. (January 16, 1967). "Hathaway fed up with hefty extras". Los Angeles Times. in APA, or Neely, D. "Hathaway fed up with hefty extras". Los Angeles Times, January 16, 1967. (Note: in all cases, dates are fully written out in sentence form.) Now, go to the article and make changes. BTW, the use of the proquest.com website would be discouraged as it is not easily accessible without an account.
If you are interested, I will also give you the Referencing 101 examples for how to make a proper Harvard Citation, Citation for a book entry and a creating a bibliographical source list. See: Another Dawn where you had originated the article and had incorporated some unusual referencing styles, and the recent, subsequent re-edit.
FYI, referencing using "standard" formatting is not "rocket science" and is easy to learn, with the residual benefits of making your life and those of other editors, much more pleasant. - There are no prescribed styles but there are citation mavens who use one style or other. I gravitate to a combination of Harvard Citation for citations (Author date, p.) along with formatting the Bibliography using the MLA guide, since most of the articles I write are in the Humanities (Social Science, History, Literature) and can be read as: Author. Title. Place of Publication: Publisher, Date. (with the option of including the ISBN or International Standard Book Number, an industry guide to the publishing information and is now standardized as ISBN: 13). Still the same issues. Here are some handy tips:
- Do not use all caps, even if that is what the original source uses.
- Do not "bury" the author note, start the reference citation with it.
- Only give the publisher information, not additional notations as to location unless it is necessary, e.g. Los Angeles Times does not need to have the added notation of "(Los, Angeles, California)".
- Give full date notations, not an abbreviation: e.g. "March", not "Mar".
- Even if the date is given in the source as "09", use "9" instead, and be careful to give international date standards (dmy) for international topics, e.g. "9 March 1937" and mdy for North American subjects: e.g. "March 9, 1937". Hi Dutchy85, I have a question about the financial results for Angels in the Outfield (1951 film).
According to your edit citing a source, the film grossed $1,666,000 and its budget was $1,081,000 — how, then, did the film have a loss of $177,000 instead of a profit of $585,000? Please clarify.
