Re: A quick note

Err, I guess you didn't check my userpage. I actually have my political compass score there: Econ -8.25 Social -8.00. I don't trust representatives to represent anyone but themselves and their financial backers. Economically I'm in favor of a gift economy based on mutual aid and voluntary association without any government to speak of, except perhaps consensus direct democracy. I'm also strongly in favor of decentralization. I lean towards post-leftist anarchism which is largely due to crimethInc.'s writings. And I'll just respond to a few of the criticisms you may have now. Yes, it will be incredibly inefficient in terms of economic production, which I like. People are pushed to the limit in our society to compete and sell their labor just for enough to eat or get a few more consumer goods, which is detrimental to relationships (friends, families, lovers), mental health, physical health, spiritual health, not to mention the environment. And yes, it won't happen overnight and will take a lot of time to get people willing to agree to such a system, and I fully realize that the only way to bring it about is to get people to start doing it--it can't be imposed from above. AFDed Webcomics

Hey hey. Turns out I actually love web comics; I read about 10 daily. I just hate to see so much non-notable content filling up Wikipedia. I get that the comic's authors put a lot of work into their art (although in some comics that isn't the case), but that doesn't necessarily make the comic notable. A friend of mine draws comics, but I haven't made a page for them here. Know what I'm saying?

We put things in Wikipedia because of notability, not for the hope that an page here will make them more notable. --Brad Beattie (talk) 01:38, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

I see. I'm also a fan of webcomics, though I only really read 8-bit theatre. It just seems that you have some kind of grudge or something, the way so systematically nominate them.  :). DoomsDay349 Happy Halloween! 01:45, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

No no, this isn't grudge. This is just me opening a bunch of pages from the category, putting them all up for AFD, then waiting for general consensus before I put up another 5 or 10. I figure if I did them all at once and people had an issue with it, I'd have wasted some people's time. Best to take it a little at a time. --Brad Beattie (talk) 01:53, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Article about Wikipedia Users

I am a freelance writer working on an article about the wide array of people who make Wikipedia their life, their passion, their pastime. Wikipedia “addicts” if you will. I’m looking for people just willing to tell their story of how they got sucked into the intellectual whirlwind that is Wikipedia; how you got started editing, how the obsession grew, and what you spend your time focusing on these days? Do you write articles from scratch? Is your main push toward one particular type of article? Do you patrol for typos and errors, or spend your time diligently fixing vandalism? Do you take part in the “social aspects” of Wikipedia; engaging in animated discussions or decorating your user page with all sorts of internet memes? Have you ever forced yourself to take a “Wikipedia break”? If so, what’s your 20/20 hindsight on the obsession? Basically I’m just trying to get an idea of what it’s like for various Wikipedia “addicts.” I'm particularly interested in talking to you about 1) your user page which is more "MySpacey" than most and 2) your thoughts on Esperanza which you seem to be heavily involved in. If you are interested in participating, please email me at brianwrites@gmail.com68.39.158.205 03:37, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Re: Collaboration of the month

Thanks for the thought, but I'll be happy to let some other well-qualified individual fill that role.  :) It will be a good time just participating! Signature warning

Hello there, I was wondering if you would please modify your signature to conform to the guidelines laid out at Wikipedia:Sign your posts on talk pages. The general guidelines are that signatures shouldn't contain images, they shouldn't contain unnecessary internal links or any external links, and they shouldn't be unnecessarily long in Wiki source. The reasoning for this final bit is that overly long signatures tend to overwhelm the actual comments in edit mode, making it hard to track down and respond to specific comments. You can fix your signature by removing any images and external links, any unnecessary links (like links to Wikipedian organizations, articles, or subpages in userspace), and removing excessive color, font, and formatting code. Thank you. --Cyde Weys 22:29, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza reform

Hi DoomsDay. Thanks for your constructive response to my comments on the Esperanza MfD page. I doubt Esperanza will be deleted, and I hope you can follow through on your plans for reform. I took a look at Esperanza earlier today, to see what might be in need of reforming, and what stood out in particular was the userpage award. While people are allowed to make their userpages as pretty as they want, it looks to me like the award encourages people to think of such prettifying is a good thing and a productive use of their time. It's much better to give awards for writing articles! Any thoughts? -- SCZenz 03:22, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Cool, thanks. I asked at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/User Page Award#Can you help me understand the purpose of this page? if anyone can explain why the award is more useful than it appears, so maybe that will lead to some good discussion. -- SCZenz 03:41, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Hey, DoomsDay, what say we propose to the 'deleters' of Esperanza that Esperanza is given time to prove itself? One month, maybe more, to prove to people that Esperanza is a good association? Reply ASAP, or I have to put it in the MfD. Thanks! Zacharycrimsonwolf 13:14, 14 November 2006 (UTC) 14:54, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Fair use in portals

Have you prompted on the main fair use page? If not, would bringing it to ArbCom be too extreme? Ddcc 16:21, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Doomsday, I know that you feel strongly about this issue, but you really should be more civil than that. Saying that you no longer take someone's opinion into value, no matter how much you disagree with them, really isn't approriate. It is absolutely fine to disagree with someone, but regardless of how much disagreement there is, everyone's opinion should be respected. And even if you can't manage that, you should at least be civil about it. -- Natalya 18:38, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Don't worry, you haven't lost my respect, I was just trying to give you some advice. You're right, this is a really stressful situation. That's why the nicer we all can be, the easier it will be. And even if you're wondering what's happening, sometimes taking some time away from the situation can help. -- Natalya 16:41, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Don't worry DoomsDay, the debate took a lot out of all of us. Take some time to relax. I hope you feel better soon; we need you around to help us with all of the ways we're going to improve Esperanza. Cheers, EWS23 (Leave me a message!) 00:46, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi there, I'm sorry that you're feeling stressed about the whole Esperanza MfD thing. I think a lot of people, on both sides, are feeling the stress. In Elaragirl's defense, I truly believe that she is acting out of concern for Wikipedia and not out of disdain for Esperanzians. She just expresses herself more bluntly than I would if I were in her position. You have to admit that she has a certain wit. Just so you know, the only part of Esperanza I strongly feel should be kept is the Alerts page, and I could take or leave most everything else. I guess my position is somewhere between the "keepers" and the "deleters". I wouldn't personally try to delete the whole of Esperanza, but I'm not emotionally attached to a lot of it either. Take the coffee lounge. While I think it's occasionally fun to participate, there are times when I am rather put off by the sense of humour that prevails there. I personally think that Esperanza will end up being a smaller, but more well-defined project. Anyway, I hope that you and everyone else recovers from the whole experience. --Kyoko 04:08, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Hello there! Stress, eh? Apparently the Esperanza incident thing, eh? Well, it's still around, isn't it? Don't let stress get to you, or something similar, as you've told me some time ago. And cheer up, man. I have a tumor and I don't much mind yea, I do... I hope this helps as I'm truly not good at this. itried cheering up this girl whose cat died, but ended up making her cry and smack me in the face... Heh... Well, cheers,--SUITWhat!? 42 05:22, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks!

No offence meant, none taken. I just posted it at the lounge because the kid was being very agressive; I needed a quick response, and the Help Desk is often swamped, I believe, so I avoided it.

Thanks for taking the time to write, by the way. I imagine you and many others are quite busy with the Esperanza hullaballoo.

And a smile in return.

Coffee Lounge MfD

I noticed that Coffee Lounge was deleted. The thing is, you only nominated it today. It would be easy to nominate it, tell people who share your opinion to vote "Delete", then show an admin the "consensus" in favor of delete and have them delete the page before any "Keep" votes show up. I am trying to assume good faith, but something doesn't smell right. Alethiophile123 19:13, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Please be civil. I am simply wondering why there were absolutely no "Keep" votes. I would have certainly voted "Keep", but the first time I heard about the MfD was when I tried to access the coffee lounge to try out my new signature. By that time, it was already deleted. I had no notice, except that the CL was a major reason for "Delete" votes in the all-Esperanza MfD. No one who wasn't on the CL between early this morning and now would have known that it was under MfD. This might have kept away a significant number of voters, who simply might not have known about the MfD until it was too late. At least some of these might have been "Keep" votes. The situation is analagous to the US deciding a president based on poll data from only the first hour of voting. The consensus from the first day is by no means indicative of the consensus over the proper five-day period. It seems unreasonable that the MfD was closed only one day (if that) into the comment period. Alethiophile123 22:41, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Re: Congrats!

Thank you very much! I have rejected several, 5 or 6 suggestions, and was not sure about accepting this one. However, being an administrator won't change me, and I will be editing articles just as before, although I may be able to help other administrators with tasks that usually need a couple of extra hands. Thanks again! -- ReyBrujo 21:10, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza

I have seen quite a lot lately about the project. I won't say a lot, because I am not a member, don't want to be one, and don't know about most of their rules. However, I must tell you that, while certain pages don't belong to Wikipedia, others may. Esperanza is a group where people appear to share conversations that have little related to Wikipedia. Apparently, such page would not fit Wikipedia per our policy, and it is true. However, it is also true that it helps people have a place for relaxing. Editing at Wikipedia can be stressing, and such place is welcomed. Check the essay Wikipedia:WikiLawyering: follow the spirit, not the letter. Remember, we work via consensus, and trying to impose a position would only bring stress. Sometimes, it is better to give time for people to accommodate to future changes. What may not be done now may be done in a year. We have plenty of time. Just a comment I thought I would share with you. Good luck! -- ReyBrujo 00:19, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Just to clarify, whenever an article is deleted, all your edits in that article disappear from your contribution list. Good luck with your future plans! -- ReyBrujo 00:57, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
I'd just like to point out that if Wikipedia is really getting stressful (which it shouldn't), the best solution is to take a break. Unlike real life, you have the capability of entirely withdrawing for a few days, or however long is needed. That is definitely the best solution to stress. I wish it worked in the real world. Having on-wiki places for "relaxing" is kind of counter-productive because it keeps people around in the environment that was causing stress in the first place when the best solution is to get away from that stressful environment. I can personally vouch for the WikiBreak; I went on one and it worked wonders. --Cyde Weys 01:40, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Help with Userboxes

Hallo, D-d349! I noticed that you have created quite a lot of userboxes already (I love the Dragonlance one). As it is, I am in trouble trying to create a userbox with pictures. I want a picure in the id section of the userbox, not just words. So, can you be so kind as to teach me, or at least, explain the way to paste a picture in the userbox? In case I'm being very confusing, take this for example:

This user is a member of the Dragonlance WikiProject.

See the red dragon? Thats the one I'm talking about. No words, unlike:

DLThis user is a member ofWikiProject Dragonlance.

So...I hope I have been clear enough. I would be very grateful if you would shoulder the burden of teaching me. Well, bye! Thanks in advance! Cheers!! Zacharycrimsonwolf 13:14, 14 November 2006 (UTC) 14:21, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Sigh...I've been trying that the whole time, but it still doesn't work!! AArgh!!! What is wrong with it?! Ah ha! I'll shish kebab it!! Meanwhile , perhaps you can find a way to put this picture/image :

into this userbox...:
