Latour-Maubourg

Hi Djmaschek,

Just dropping a quick note on your new article on the Battle of Usagre. Can you check to see which Latour-Maubourg was the French commander. There were two, Marie Victor (to whom you've linked), and Marie-Charles. I'm pretty sure that the one with Soult was Marie-Charles, not Marie Victor (Marie-Charles was at both Albuera and Gebora). Unfortunately, no article exists for Marie-Charles, and I haven't been able to find out enough to create a stub.

Worth checking though. Regards. Carre (talk) 08:23, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Never mind, I've done a load of digging, and it seems my sources are the ones that are wrong – Oman and Fortescue, believe it or not. Marie-Charles was an infantry commander, and it was indeed Marie Victor with Soult. Carre (talk) 09:06, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Hello again – thanks for the response, and yes, that was the right place to put it :) Peninsular War articles are fun, aren't they! I finally sorted out the Latour-Maubourg confusion, but it took your Usagre article to make me see the error: since both Oman and Fortescue, two of the best historians of the era got it wrong, I'd never considered checking which of the brothers it was, but your article made me look around further. Keep up the good work on those new articles. Carre (talk) 17:07, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Re:Your message

In all likelyhood I simply missed the two notes at the bottom, it wasn't meant as a slight. You can remove the template if you wish, although the article would benifit from additional inline citations. TomStar81 (Talk) 02:52, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Crusades task force

Hi Djmaschek, I've created a Crusades task force as part of the Middle Ages WikiProject, and I thought you might be interested in helping out. Adam Bishop (talk) 10:04, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

There's no obligation to do anything if you join; it's very casual, more like a small gathering place for resources and for people who have an interest in the subject, no matter how small. I mean, there is no way anyone would be kicked out for not doing anything! But you don't have to join at all, it doesn't really matter, I was just trying to find everyone I could think of who has been working on crusade articles lately. For the Fulcher translation, I got it from my university library. I would definitely never find that in a book store! Adam Bishop (talk) 04:10, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Ayyubid-Crusader War

Hey man, just wanted to say I really think this campaign box should only go from Montisgard to the fall of Jerusalem. Trying to lump in things like Arsuf and the Sixth crusade with it just doesn't work. Thought I mention it rather than just change it.

Great work on the battles by the way mate! :) --Tefalstar (talk) 17:35, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Hey man, I know you hadn't added all the other stuff to the campaign boxes, just thought I run it past you 'cus I know you've been working on them. Do you reckon the Seljuk and Zengid boxes should be merged, because personally I think it confuses people who aren't familiar with the dynasties. Afterall, they were all Seljuks. What do you think? Cheers --Tefalstar (talk) 11:41, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
I think a good solution would be to have the Seljuk box show all the battles and explain on the Zengid page which battles within the Seljuk-Frankish war were actually waged by Zengi and his dynasty. Having them in two separate places isn't an option in my opinion. --Tefalstar (talk) 12:13, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Re: Battle of Bayonne

Great articles all around. That bit I plucked from Gates; I'll throw the ref in now. Just being lazy. Cheers, Albrecht (talk) 02:19, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Again: I've tinkered with little things here and there. For instance, I moved Siege of Tarragona (1813) to the Catalonia campaignbox since events in eastern Spain were largely isolated from the principal allied campaigns and certainly from the Vitoria/Bidassoa operations. Don't hesitate to inform me if you disagree with any of these moves or to correct any errors; I'm bound to slip up sooner or later. Albrecht (talk) 17:59, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Forbelet

I guess the problem is that a lot of these battles just don't have names; they went out on campaign all the time so it wasn't anything special. We'll figure something out...by the way, did you see Military history of the crusader states? Since Ayyubid (etc)-Crusader War are also not found in the literature, Srnec merged them all into one article (but hasn't redirected anything there yet). Adam Bishop (talk) 08:51, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Hey man, just quickly re:Forbelet. Tyerman talks about it as Saladin's 1182 offensive as I recall. A title like that would better describe the 3 parts designed at pushing back the Islamic forces perhaps? --Tefalstar (talk) 12:14, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Reston

Reston isn't really an historian; he's a journalist who writes about history sometimes. He has obviously read plenty of primary and secondary sources, but seems to lack the skill to analyze them critically as an historian would, so the book reads like a bunch of jumbled information. When information is lacking he seems to fill it in with his own imagination. I wouldn't use it at as a source on Wikipedia. Adam Bishop (talk) 03:01, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

Wauhatchie

Ouch! I was in the middle of a large edit of Battle of Wauhatchie when there was an edit conflict with you. Most of the edit (but not all -- why?) was blown to smithereens. Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! It was a big edit too. Djmaschek (talk) 23:06, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, that happens some times. A couple of things you can do in the future: (1) Do your large edits 'offline' in a text editor and commit them all at once, not dribbled in over time. (2) Put up an in-use template (WP:Template messages/Maintenance#Articles undergoing major edits) for a reasonable period. Hal Jespersen (talk) 18:36, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi there Djmaschek. I have moved Battle for the Relief of Ladysmith to Relief of Ladysmith as per your wishes indicated in the edit summary. I was not sure whether to leave "Battle of" in the lead but unbold it or to remove it all together so this is just a heads up to say that it might need looking at now it is at the new title. Nice article by the way. Kind regards, nancy (talk) 19:09, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Belvoir Castle

Hey man, I've been having a big think about this. I'd like to replace the article with two new ones i.e. the Battle of Le Forbelet and the Siege of Beirut. I'd include Saladin's movements around the Kingdom prior to the battle in a background section so we don't lose any information. I'd include the course of events after August in an aftermath section of the Beirut article.

I just wanted to know how that sounds to you, I think it makes sense. Anyway man, let me know! Thanks, --Tefalstar (talk) 21:11, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

It's just because an article at least the length of the Kerak siege could be written on Beirut and it was an important confrontation. A city that Saladin had identified as the weakest link and had committed to taking forced his withdrawal on land and sea. I don't mind writing it, but I reckon it should be there. --Tefalstar (talk) 21:07, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

Orders of battle

Hi, I notice that you have done some work creating orders of battle on battles of the French Revolutionary Wars, mainly based on Digny Smith's work. Would you mind if I made changes to the titles of these articles so that they were easier to understand for the casual reader? An example would be changing Castiglione 1796 Campaign Order of Battle to Order of battle in the Castiglione Campaign (1796) or Order of Battle in the 1796 Castiglione Campaign. This is clearer to casual readers and more descriptive, and is usually the prefered format for these articles. --Jackyd101 (talk) 01:30, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Given that you feel strongly about it, I won't take any action for now, although I think a consistent format across Wikipedia should be decided on at some point. The problem you raise regarding sorting could be very easily dealt with by piped links e.g. Order of battle in the Castiglione Campaign (1796) would be categorised as Castiglione Campaign (1796). The problem with the articles as they currently exist, is that they don't really make sense grammatically in English and are unclear in what they mean at first glance, even to someone like me who knows quite a bit about this period and subject.--Jackyd101 (talk) 12:01, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
Firstly, I'd like to make it clear that I was in no way suggesting changes to the contents of the orders of battle themselves. I think your work here is extremely valuable and it is much appreciated. All I was suggesting was renaming to a different title. Secondly, I'm not certain that there is a standard format for these titles, perhaps this is something that should be raised at Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history. I will leave a note on the talk page there for a wider consensus, please come along and join in, your opinion would be valuable.--Jackyd101 (talk) 23:10, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
