Tools

It's OK - various internal server errors are normal (well, not normal, but at least expected) - the tools stuff is still pretty alpha quality right now. Hiya. Thanks for the messsage. From what I can discover no-one knows who took the original picture. It may belong to one of the many defunct Irish newspapers or have been taken by a private citizen but whomever took it is unknown. Because of its age (it was taken before the end of August 1922), the inability of anyone to find who took it and because no-one has ever claimed copyright (if they did, given its widespread usage they would be very very rich) it is universally presumed either to be out of copyright (expired), lost copyright (ie, the descendants of the copyright holder don't know they hold it, and as its origins are unclear they are all but certain never to be able establish legally that they hold copyright) or been seen through usage as entitled to be used without copyright restrictions.

As an example of how widespread this image is, I've just passed a Sinn Fein office where it is displayed in a poster. I have seen it in the Fine Gael headquarters, it is widely used by all Irish newspapers, history book, reference manuals, etc. It is even on the wall of the internet cafe I am in right now. Not one of the sources have sought copyright permission to use it (I've asked. They say they don't know who even to approach about it, so unclear is its origins!) If wikipedia was to be challenged as to copyright they would find themselves in a queue behind just about every Irish publisher, every author, every political party, every publisher of posters and about three million Irish people. It would find itself in the company of HMSO (Her Majesty's Stationery Office), and state publications in the US, the EU, the UK, the RoI, Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, Sinn Fein, the SDLP, the Ulster Unionist Party, etc etc. If it ever turns up that someone claims and can establish that they own copyright the image can be removed immediately. But from I can understand from everyone I have checked with, the chances of anyone establishing that are slim. And even if they did, the nature of its usage for over fifty years would make the chances of they being able to enforce copyright so slim as to be non-existent.

Medical education is so diverse across the world - both from country to country and from university to university - so no one article is going to easily cover the full range. Rather, I have attempted to keep the article broad whilst giving a few examples.

Post-graduate career pathways also vary considerably from place to place, eg nations like the USA have an earlier streaming process, whilst nations such as Australian or the UK have a greater emphasis on early undifferentiated practice before moving into a longer specialisation process. However, I decided that the medical school article was not the place for this, and so only left broad information.

I see you are seeking entry into a medical program - best of luck if you have not already attained this!

You shouldn't have put the image on the Possibly unfree images list. It is only for images that are both unfree and break the fair use rules. To make sure of its fair use status, I listed it on Wikipedia:Copyright problems#Fair use claims needing a second opinion. Unfortunately not. The hit counts are produced from the Squid logs using webalizer, which is currently not being run because it puts too much of a strain on the servers. LTP question

Hi, i am a layman and i am not sure whether i understand this sentence right: Though a single presentation of the stimulus is USUALLY not sufficient to induce LTP, repeated presentations cause the postsynaptic cell to be progressively depolarized.

Does it mean that that some things are written to our memory completely by chance? that some quick glance can be stored in our memory just because of rigtht polarization of the postsynaptic cell? and on the other hand something we want to remember may not be joined by right polarization and therefore we just forget it?

Fraser Mustard

Hi,

Dr. Mustard is notable for many reasons (which are included in the article), in no particular order:

1. He is a Companion of the Order of Canada. Canada's highest civilian award which is only presented to 130 or so living people.
2. He received the Order of Ontario. A provincial equivalent to the Order of Canada.
3. He is a co-founder of a medical school at one of Canada's significant universities, McMaster.
4. He is well respected doctor and is a member of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame
5. He was involved in the study of Blood Coagulation
6. There are currently 9,330 entries for "Fraser Mustard" in Google.

Reference desk

I have answered questions on the RD about the songs at the beginning of the CSI series, algebra, where to find the instruction manual for a Hitachi HB-B101 Bread Maker, where to find a service manual for a GMC Caballero, basic information about travelling to the Czech Republic, where to find reports of volcanic activity, how to get 220V out of a 110V breaker box, one about the theoretical maximum speed of CDs, and hazarded a guess at the nutritional value of mice and rats. And that is what hasn't been archived.

But at some point, you have to ask yourself what people are thinking. This "Tina" would have had to have expended much more effort finding the Reference desk than she would have in using a search engine to find it. Also, about the only way she is likely to have found it is by using a search engine, meaning she inexplicably did not search for what she was actually looking for. Add on top of that the "Urgently.", and I just lost it.

I don't think there's a policy that literally says to avoid internamespace links from an article. But I think it follows from Wikipedia:Avoid self-references and its associated talk page. The idea is that user pages (and any other pages outside the main namespace) are not part of the encyclopedia itself; they're part of Wikipedia's editorial process and the reader shouldn't be taken there unexpectedly. (On the other hand, if a particular non-article page has a useful discussion, example, or explanation that's relevant to an article, then it's perfectly ok to link to it -- though there are probably better alternatives -- as long as one uses the external link syntax.) Blank spots

The problem wasn't so much in the template itsel. That displayed fine. The problem still persists on the main page when all the items are put in the right column, even if I put the image in the ul-tags.
