Thank you SO much for the Barnstar! I promised myself that I'd do at least one new article a week and clean up at least one article a day. Ah, but the vandal fighting...very refreshing during lulls at work.  :) Really, thanks much for the attaboy. Much obliged.

Request for Name Change

Hi! I recently added a request for a name change from Cory K (boring) to Bellito (cool.) It says under my request, "Bureaucrat: User has 131 edits, and target Username not taken." or something like that. However, when I try to log in with Bellito as the username and my same password, it won't let me! What's going on?...

The preceeding statement in a nutshell:
I don't understand why my proposed username that was seemingly accepted fails to work, please help me and thank you

So, uhh... How do I know when my username has changed, then? Will I get an email or whatever?

Thanks for explaining the whole username change procedure! Cory K 02:09, 22 October 2006 (UTC) [reply]

The References

Hi there! I finally figured out what was screwing around with the references. It was a really stupid mistake by me. I'll show you here below.

This is what I was doing (problem bolded):

<ref>[http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/10/22/amnesia.identified/index.html | Example text]</ref>

When I should have been doing:

<ref>http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/10/22/amnesia.identified/index.html Example text</ref>

I shouldn't have put a | in anywhere. Sorry for the trouble last night. Yours, Philip Gronowski Contribs 20:06, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Carnegie of Finhaven

Deon555,

thanks for the advice. On the help search, I followed your suggestion but the search is returning very few articles. For example I searched for 'stub' and was expected 5 or so pages to come up where the word 'stub' was in the text.

On the templates I really thought there would be a list of pages like User:Haseler/template (perhaps tailored for different subjects).

Ideally I want to put { {new article|history } } hit "save page" and hey presto I have an entirely new article with all the subheadings etc.

The other problem I have is working out whether or how I should add categories. Is there a way to search categories?

email

Deon555, I copied across your text on email - it's now missing! And I notice there's a change on your page - I hope I haven't done something stupid!

I apologize for the misunderstanding. You might want to make the test page a bit clearer -- at first glance, it looks like you're just being silly. I understand now that this is not the case, and I apologize for the message. -- Merope

Hi - thanks for your notes on this page. I wonder if you've seen User:DumbBOT/UsernameChange? This automatically generates the information which you are compiling, and I usually check it before changing any usernames. If you've got any suggestions for improvements to it, I'm sure that would also be appreciated. Warofdreams talk Date for archival purposes: 06:24, 6 November 2004

New Article temple

Deon555,

Yesterday we briefly talked about a template that magically filled in a black article, I think I may have made a good start, and I'd appreciate you having a look:

Open up a blank document.

If you want a document with lots of comments enter:

{{subst:NA}}

if without comments enter:

{{subst:NA|0}}

save the page - then open it again to see what is there! --Mike 00:02, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your RFA

Any idea why any time I try to contribute, I get #REDIRECT Request for ddminship/Deon555? Where did "ddminship" come from? When I try to go there directly, I'm redirected to your RFA entry. WTF!? --Ginkgo100 talk · e@ 03:30, 26 October 2006 (UTC) [reply]

RFA

Can I suggest you withdraw your nom for adminship at the current time with good humour and stand again in, say, late December, having taken on board the criticisms made? I think you'd then sail through an RFA with overwhelming support... and be a better admin for the experience of the intervening months. I'd love to support your nom, but currently cannot. If the Afd is unsuccessful, when you run again, please drop me a line at my talk page. --Dweller 08:45, 27 October 2006 (UTC) [reply]

Sending you a personal message...

I'm sorry if my comments on your Rfa were harsh, but I thought it was important to be honest. If there is anyway to help you out, feel free to leave me a message. OK ? Jcam 20:05, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The prodded image

Since its over at commons, You'd have to go over there to do something about it. However, since it has a free license, there might not be much enthusiasm over there for deletion. But that is the way to go. youngamerican (ahoy hoy) 04:32, 28 October 2006 (UTC) [reply]

Checkuser clerk?

Are you still interested in helping out at WP:RFCU? If so, go ahead and add your name to the active list. We've had several clerks take breaks, and I'd like a break, too. Although that leaves 5 active clerks, there are still sometimes lags in archiving cases, so an extra hand to spread things out should be a good thing. Everything you should need to know is at Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Clerks/Guide, and the clerk's noticeboard Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Clerks/Requests (although some past discussions about policies are split between the noticeboard, its talk page, and various archives). The main tasks are, helping people with requests (formatting, the letter codes, adding links to relevant previous cases), and archiving answered requests. Ocassionally someone will create a new page rather than adding on to an old request; those should be merged and redirected to the main case page. If you have any questions you can ask me or any other active clerk.

If you are no longer interested, delist your name so I can move down and ask the next person in line. Thanks. Thatcher131 01:39, 30 October 2006 (UTC) [reply]

November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.
Signed...
Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

Thanks

Hey deon, I think you might have made a typo in your RfA message. It says it "closed successfully." Thanks for the meetup info. :) Sarah Ewart (Talk) 23:10, 2 November 2006 (UTC) [reply]

Your RfA thanks

Heya, thanks for dropping me a line about your recent RfA. I just thought I should mention that the template you used for the thank-you note appears to be incomplete, and should have included a "|}", without the quotes, as the very last thing on a line of its own. Otherwise, when people add new messages to the page, they appear inside the box created by the template.

If you added the template with something like AWB it should be relatively easy to add those two characters to all the pages (excluding mine) that the template was added to, but if you didn't, just ask and I'll help you fix it up.

Hey, no problem re: the support. :)
I'm actually about to go have a shower (mmm... wet and nekkid), but when I get back perhaps we can find a way to split the workload? I don't really wanna see you have to manually fix so many substituted templates! Daveydweeb (chat/patch) 10:51, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, I'm back -- I was away for two days for a friend's 18th birthday. I'm glad to hear you fixed all the templates up, even if it meant you had to do it yourself. Sorry I couldn't help! Daveydweeb (chat/patch) 00:46, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've received two coaching assignments instead of one from the Esperanza Admin coaching program, so inorder to accomodate both students, I've set up a Virtual classroom. And to make the classroom even more rewarding and fun, I've invited some of the most prolific and talented editors of Wikipedia to come and contribute their know how so we can all learn. Currently, we are all comparing the tools each of us makes use of in navigating and working on Wikipedia. So far, Interiot, Rich Farmbrough, and CBDunkerson have been kind enough to help get things started by sharing their experience. Mrs. Hammons, You need to read the Citing Wikipedia page, and, use the "Cite this article" and/or use this page and type in the article's name, it will then give you information on how to site it etc. From memory, You cite "Various Editors, Wikimedia Foundation" — Deon555talk 01:51, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
