Your thoughts, please

Hi George. I've been pottering around Wikipedia for a couple of weeks. I've been trying to find my own answers to things without burdening you with my many questions.

I particularly enjoy wikifying pages, but I'm wondering: how bold is bold when it comes to Wiki's be bold policy? I wikified this to this, thinking it would be a fairly simple task, but each amendment I made seemed to open up a can of worms and I soon found myself trying not to fall off topic, bleeding too far into other articles (eg seasons, climate, solstices, equinoxes etc) or just hacking the article to pieces. The result(I think) is a messy compromise, albeit better than the previous contribution.

I'd like to make a start on wikifying the days of the week and months of the year into a consistent format, but can foresee some major structural changes. How far reaching can my changes be before it becomes good etiquette to raise it up for discussion first? Annatto (talk) 13:44, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Your NPWatcher application

Dear Dendodge,

Thank you for applying for NPWatcher! You've been approved to use it. Before you run the program, please check the changelog on the application page to see if there is a newer release (or just add the main page (here) to your watchlist). Report any bugs or feature suggestion here. If you need help, feel free to contact me or join NPWatcher.

Hi, I hope you don't mind that I replaced your 'Nonsense' speedy nom with a 'Vandalism' one. A vandalism one seemed more applicable in that situation, since nonsense doesn't apply to hoaxes. Cheers, FusionMix 16:11, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Just try not to go too quickly :). FusionMix 16:14, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

FA, GA

I saw you editor review, and before reviewing you I would like to know what the 3 FA's and 3 GA's you say on your userpage are? Thanks Harland1 (t/c) 05:07, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Speedy Deletion of Jim P. Slaton

Hiya. Just to let you know I've declined this under A7 - notability is inserted, aprticularly by providing references. Admitedly it's horrid, and needs fixing, or may be best to be put through WP:AFD to establish if there is sufficent notability. Ta! Pedro :  Chat  08:22, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Your VandalSniper application

Good day, and thank you for applying to use the counter-vandalism tool VandalSniper. I am pleased to inform you that your application has been accepted, and you are now approved to use the tool. You are now welcome to download the program - and be sure to read the features guide, if you have not already done so.

Please bear in mind that VandalSniper is a powerful program, and that misuse may result in your access being withdrawn by a moderator. Don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions, and once again welcome to VandalSniper!

Kind regards,

Re: UAA Template

Thanks. Just keep in mind admins reserve final decision on these, so if you're ever not sure, it may be best to just ignore them until an admin comes by. (And I've reconsidered the smack, your referral was well-intentioned. ;-) ) Hersfold (t/a/c) 22:30, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Just as a tip... it may be better to pick one message and just leave that, rather than adding three tags that all mean the same thing. If you're discussing it with the user, for example, there's no need to tag it as a non-blatant violation. It tends to make things kinda cluttered. Thanks for your help, though. Hersfold (t/a/c) 17:05, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

confusing usernames

Hello! I noticed that you reported a username because it's confusing. The username policy changed earlier this month, and so "Usernames may no longer be blocked solely for being confusing" - I hope this helps. If you still feel the username should be changed but that it isn't a blatant violation that needs instant blocking you could take it to request for comment - user names, after trying to talk to the user first. kind regards. Your contributions to WP:UAA

Hi George, thanks for your contributions to WP:UAA. However, please be very careful in your analysis and make sure to do due diligence before coming to a conclusion about a user name. For example, User:T-network.be‎'s edit was to a page where he/she added a spam link to an article. If you read www.t-network.be, the page (which is in Flemish) is an ad for creating web sites - one of which is the spam link added to the article. Hence, not a coincidence, but a spammer. Another example is User:Swingtimesweethearts‎, where the UAA nominator noted the spam article (deleted) created by the user. While only admins can directly access the content of deleted articles, the mention of it by the nominator provides a good clue that the user is a spammer and the user name is not an innocent coincidence. Thanks, --MCB (talk) 21:25, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

I have to agree. You just said "Not a blatant violation" to Www.trekwith.us (talk · contribs). Website addresses aren't allowed under our username policy, period. I've soft-blocked the user and replaced your message with a block notice. 22:30, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply, which I am guessing was about Www.trekwith.us (talk · contribs) -- the message immediately above was actually by EVula (check the history), who forgot to sign it. You might want to leave it on EVula's talk page as well. Best, MCB (talk) 07:14, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
 Done Yeah, I noticed just after I posted it on your page. George D. Watson (Dendodge).TalkHelp 07:16, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Bringbackthetylers

This is absurd; how much longer is this user going to gain respect and sympathy for violating our core policies? He commits WP:BLP violations on a regular basis; he's received five warnings, the last three of which were "final". He has been given information on what content is permissible, and how to ask for further help should he need it. He's obviously never going to be a worthwhile contributor... so why are we letting him hang around and harm the 'Pedia? TreasuryTagtc 14:29, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Indeed, I mean, he can hardly be acting in good faith after ignoring all those warnings. Will you block, then? Thanks. TreasuryTagtc 14:33, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Templates

Hello Dendodge. I appreciate your help at the Help Desk, but don't you think it's a bit unnecessary to insert those huge template every time? Cheers, Face 08:31, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for making {{HD}}

I just saw the new Help Desk template(s) you made. They look great! Excellent work! Thank You. - SigmaEpsilonΣΕ 03:22, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Hows your VP?

I saw on this page here that you were having problems with vandal proof, how is it working now? Its just that im in line to get it and like you i cant log on, i suppose because i just got it thats the problem. If you have sorted everything out, how is the program? Is it the best vandal tool out there or would you advise users to use the others ones out there. Thanks Roadrunnerz45 (talk) 08:10, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

{{HD}}

Can you make sure that these are subst'ed please? This means that the help desk template transclusion is not excessive and also that in the future, any changes to the template will not take a long time to filter through. Thanks. Woody (talk) 19:58, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Well then, that needs to be solved really. If this is used a lot then in 3 months it will be transcluded hugely and it will slow the page down considerably. I don't know how this could be remedied frankly, I would rather it not be used then slow down the desk further, but that is me. Woody (talk) 20:06, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
I knew it would be the parser functions and WP:AIV and WP:UAA don't live on in archives for eternity nor do they reach the immense size that the Help desk does. Woody (talk) 20:14, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Re this

It changed hands... it's a library so obviously there is the potential that different people would access Wikipedia through this IP (although not many seem to do). Thanks for the advise. 194.75.236.69 (talk) 14:17, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Recent Message

Hello. I received a recent message from you on my user talk page regarding recent edits made. You indicate at least one of the recent edits was removed or reverted as it appeared non-constructive. I appreciate your willingness to discuss the issue -- it reflects a maturity that sometimes can be lacking among Wikipedia editors. I'm curious about precisely why any edit I've made would be deemed non-constructive; unfortunately, I'm unaware of which page and edit you're referring to. Would you happen to know which page and edit were the subjects of removal / reversion? Thanks in advance. 69.253.70.17 (talk) 14:20, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Just got your follow-up message. Not a problem. Thanks very much for your apology.69.253.70.17 (talk) 23:40, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

{{HD}}

If your template creates "over 30 lines of complicated parser functions and wikimarkup" then it needs to be rewritten with greater efficiency, but leaving it un-subst'd on a high traffic page puts too much strain on the servers especially since it has to call on dozens of lines of parser functions. Every time someone loads the Help Desk, or one of its archives, with this template transcluded it requires the server to call on your template. If you require more time to properly code your template then you should remove all instances of it from the help desk until such time as it no longer constitutes such a severe drain on server resources. --172.134.226.73 (talk) 15:38, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Since you insist on threatening me, I should at least warn you that using rollback to edit war is grounds for its removal.--VectorPotentialTalk 16:26, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
