Hey hermano[edit]

You ever hear of Sylvia Mendez? This was an amazing little 8 year old who helped change the history of the U.S. Tony the Marine 01:25, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I lived in California myself, and had heard of her, awright(!), but didn't have the SLIGHTEST IDEA that she was half-Puertorra. You never cease to amaze me... Her story is, of course, worthy of an article, but there's another one that probably deserved at least a stub. I used to work for Apple, Inc., and at the time, their multicultural diversity HR leader was Santiago Rodriguez (not the Cuban pianist), the son of an immigrant from Yauco and a Jewish-Guatemalan lady (wow, what a mix!). The father was absent, and his mother, his brother and him criss-crossed the country, picking tomatoes, but through hard work he made it to college. He was later the director of the Puerto Rican Agency for Federal Affairs under Carlos Romero Barceló, and later was the multicultural champion for Apple and Microsoft. However, he kept his health problems away from the limelight (he was HIV-positive as far as I know) and died from a heart attack on a plane flight from Chicago to Seattle. Not as crucial a story as Mendez's, but another Boricua deserving at least an article. If I could only find info about the guy; since his death whatever bio info about him has been removed from the Apple and MS portals... Demf 12:27, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Betances[edit]

Little did I know that when I gave birth to the article that someone like you would come along and nourish it the way that you have done. You are a true champion. To tell you the truth, for me it has been an honor to have befriended a person with your patriotism and convictions. It fills me with joy to know that there are people like you who still loves thier country and fellow countymen. I take off my sombrero to you. Tony the Marine 02:25, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(blushes again) Aw, shucks... Gracias again... not only that, I've created a monster while researching the note: [1] However, I'm quite sure that my friend at El Nuevo Día, Nanny Torres, heavily edited my note. Mine mentioned the pigeons eating ExLax. Honest.
When you tell people your story about having been asked as a kid if Puerto Ricans had any history at all, that reminds me that those are almost exactly the very same words told to Arturo Schomburg when some teacher berated him. I'm literally sick of hearing people here in Puerto Rico who have absolutely no idea on who Betances was. They've been brainwashed into believing that he was some old bloke who organized a two-day riot in 1868, when in actuality, they owe the guy everything. By researching Betances I've learned that, as usual, everyone but Puerto Ricans hold the guy in far greater esteem that we've cared to do ourselves. The guy was just amazing.
At the same time, I've learned that WikiProject Puerto Rico is in far better shape than I thought: just learning enough about Dominican history for this project tells me we've done something right here, since there aren't much links from Dominicans about Dominicans, from Cubans about Cubans, and so on. Perhaps the language difference is to blame, of course, but the Spanish Wikipedia lacks depth in those areas, too, IMNSHO. We do make a good deal of noise, and have the research and writing skills to prove it. As long as I have the time, I'll do my bit and improve Puerto Rico's core articles, little by little. We're a great people, and we deserve better. Demf 02:15, 7 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Man, we think alike and I think that's why we've clicked. Our people are ignorant as to the greatness of our forefathers. Like you pointed out, what do they know and what respect do they have for the men and women of our past? Not only when it comes to Betances but also, to de Hostos, Bracetti, Valero de Bernabe and so on and so fourth.
  • It is very convenient to keep a conquered nation in a state of ignorance and low self esteem, because it helps to keep its people under control. That is why it is important that people like us continue doing what we are doing and that is educating our people and everyone else of our greatness and correcting the historical injustices made by history books which omit not only our contributions to society, but those of the Hispanics in general. Tony the Marine 05:05, 7 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • OK, Tony, thanks for the honor. Now... help me address the peer reviewer's objections, please(!) I need someone who doesn't write in Goleta English to dot a few i's and cross a few t's for the Betances article... and please pass the voice about this! :-( Demf 21:12, 7 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I went over the grammar and did some fixes. I recommend that you either eliminate "In Haiti" section or try to intergrate it into one of the other sections. The problem is that one sentence does not make a paragragh. You are going to have cite your sources in the {{fact citations}}. I'm working on a project, let me know in my talk if anything comes up. Tony the Marine 00:57, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, Demf. I couldn't help but notice your work on the Betances article. Really good work! The article is comprehensive and really easy to read despite its length. I think that after it passes GA, quickly pass it through Peer Review and Copyedit. After that, I'm sure it'll reach FA! - Mtmelendez (Talk|UB|Home) 20:49, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, but time for a GA rating on the first pass is running out, and raising it to FA status is really, really tedious. If you know of any native English speaker (or decent English editor) who might help me pre-edit the text, so to speak, I'll renominate it to GA, and I'm quite sure it will pass. I have no idea on how to split the article into smaller chunks, either into existing articles or new stubs, as to shorten it. Finally, there are very little Betances references in English, and that would virtually hinder the pass from GA to FA if I don't get someone to validate that my gazillion references are indeed true. Therefore, just having someone else validate them in Spanish and serve as a witness will probably speed that up. Pasa la voz... Demf 20:58, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
After a quick scan, a spelling fix and some capitalization, it looks pretty good. You should change the opening from ", born in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, was the primary instigator" to something like " was a Puerto Rican nationalist, and the primary instigator" or something similar. Date of birth in the opening is correct, but place of birth really sets some editors off, and it's already in the Ancestry section, where it belongs. 90 percent of the footballer's bios have place of birth in the opening, but they're not headed for FA status. No grammar flubs jumped out at me during the quick scan, but I'll go over it more thoroughly. Nice work! Chris the speller 15:24, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Consider changing these: elephantiasis needs no italics, nor does oscheotomy, which I am fairly sure should be orchiectomy. Is oprobious a misspelling of opprobrious that happened during translation, or is it that way in an original English quotation? Same thing with scientifical, OK in a 17th-century quotation, but doubtful in a 19th-century quotation. I'm still looking. Chris the speller 15:51, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think I'm done. Joelr31 removed some bolding, just as I was about to suggest the same, but more bolding needs to be removed. Good luck! Chris the speller 00:53, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm extremely grateful to you, dude! :-)Demf 13:33, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Andrés Vizcarrondo[edit]

I'm going to have to look him up. I totally agree with you in regard to the inclussion of Sanchez and Roca to the list.

Mi hermano, Did you know that Puerto Ricans in World War II made FA? This is what I am going to recommend in regard to Betances. With the job that you have done, forget GA, let's go all the way for FA. I'll nominate it myself. Before we do that I recommand the following, First in touch with my friend User:Chris the speller ask him to check the spelling and prose. He's a good guy and he]ll do it. Then, go to User: SandyGeorgia. Tell Sandy, that want his recommendations as to what the article needs to make FA. He is the best person to point out whatever is wrong. After you have delt with these two people, we'll put the article up for FA peer review. Before long, I asure you that Betances will be an FA.

My personal work on the Puerto Ricans in WW II will be taken before Congress next week as part of a protest against a World War II documentary by Ken Burns, which omitts the contributions made by Hispanics and which is supposed to air on PBS. Tony the Marine 22:21, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I suspected something, but had no clue about which one of the gazillion articles on Puerto Rican military history you've authored was the one that made it ;-).
I graduated from High School in 1985. We went on a class cruise. Our second stop was Venezuela, and the guides took us to the Avenida 5 de Julio, their equivalent for the Mall in Washington. We approached the monument of the heroes of Venezuelan independence (two big cenotaphs with about six statues on top of each), and just underneath the last statue on one of the cenotaphs, on the friese, I notice the name VALERO, with a rather known profile sculpted underneath. The guide then loudly asks: "OK, Puerto Rican folks, you know who that one is, do you?" I was the only one to know. I had considerable "verguenza ajena" for my classmates... but let's face it, only history buff nerds like me would know that.
I do suspect that Vizcarrondo was one of the pan-Latin American generals (such as Valero and my homie Rius Rivera) that served whatever good cause was being fought in the revolutionary wars. I do know he was a friend of Betances, and that he had a gazillion sons and daughters. Sure beats "make love, not war", doesn't it? :-P . I don't know, however, the context of his work for Venezuela. Paez was still alive at the time, but was way old by 1870. Apparently so was Vizcarrondo... so I imagine he joined the Venezuelan conflict either very young or moved there and worked his way up the ranks. That's all I can imagine about the guy. Given Valero's record, I'm quite sure that there might be some other Puertorros that we barely know about that fought in those LatAm independence wars.
Let me finish the article (something short of excruciating during income tax time), I want to give closure to the job. I need to showcase it elsewhere as proof of my research acumen. Wink, wink... BTW, The Borinqueneers alone would deserve an episode on Burns' series. Let me know how that goes... Demf 00:46, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Andrés Vizcarrondo[edit]

Andrés Vizcarrondo was a Colonel in the Spanish Army who was appointed Mayor of San Juan in 1828. He became a believer and advocate of Puerto Rico Independence and in 1838 together with his brother Juan and some others, led their militia in a small uprising which failed. After I finish my next project, I'll do some research to see if I can write his bio and establish a connection with Venzuela. Tony the Marine 03:06, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Puerto Rican in Nam[edit]

Puerto Ricans as mercenaries? To tell you the truth, this is the first time that I have heard that, I have never ever heard of this before.I think that if the North Vietnamnese believed us Boricuas mercenaries, that would have made it known at the time thru their media. But, that doesn't mean that maybe some of them may have thought of us as such. The ony thing that I can say is that I never heard of this. Tony the Marine 15:34, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The way Ignacio depicts it, the guide was impressed with you guys... positively, stating that the US Army didn't have a fiercer troop. Of course, I'm the messenger here... Demf 12:33, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You All
[edit]

As you all know, some hacker cracked my password and I have been stripped of my admin powers. I can understand an admin. being blocked, but stripped of his powers without a fair hearing or consensus, I can't. I have stated that I changed my password and would like my powers back, however the chastizing going on in [[2]] has sadden me. It doesn't matter how many articles you have written, contributions you have made or how many years you have dedicated to making this project a credible one. A hacker, it seems has the power of making people consider you an untrustful person and turning some people in the community against you.

I have never abused of my powers and I have used Wikipedia as a medium to educate others. Yes, I have no regrets about having made so many contributions to the Pedia. I exhort all of my friends here to make sure that their passwords are strong ones so that you will not have to go through what I am going through.

I did promise some of my friend a couple of articles and as a good Marine I will keep my promise. To my friends here, Thank you for your friendship. Tony the Marine 23:46, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Claridad[edit]

Hey man. I was Google-ing some stuff on Claridad when I stumbled upon this. Kudos, I had no idea you contribute to Claridad. And I thank you for bringing this whole project to light. We could really use more boricua-wikipedians. - Mtmelendez (Talk|UB|Home) 05:30, 16 May 2007 (UTC) I still do... but under an alias ;-) Gracias Demf 14:35, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Betances[edit]

Hey. I saw that Betances didn't make GA. I think the article is pretty good, but some people like to judge Good Articles as if they're going to Featured.

Anyways, I was surfing through Wikiquote, trying to find quotations by Puerto Rican thinkers, activists and politicians, but couldn't find anything except on Luis A. Ferre. Since you are undoubtedly the Betances expert, do you know any good quotations of his? Maybe you could add some to the Wikiquote project? - Mtmelendez (Talk|UB|Home) 22:56, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That Betances article was a pain in the wazoo to raise it up to the "standards" everyone claimed it should be raised to, and I just gave up on it. It was causing me trouble all over, and people who suggested the changes tended to leave you on your own once they suggested something (like if I truly owned the article). Anyway... Betances tended to WRITE, not necessarily quotable things in a sound bite kinda way, but here and there you'll get these true gems. I quoted whatever I could and it was, indeed a pain... truly different eras, when it came to attention spans and synthesizing thought into quotes. I can't think of many that don't relate directly to Puerto Rico and could be considered as universal in nature. I'll see what I can find. "¿Y qué pasa con los puertorriqueños que no se rebelan?" is about the only famous one so far, though... Demf 04:36, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mi Hermano[edit]

As you know too often the contributions which Hispanics have made have often been overlooked. This must stop! I believe that you should look at this and express yourself. [3] Tony the Marine 06:40, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! The Puerto Rico Portal page has been revamped with additional content, including a Selected series of Articles, Pictures, and Biographies related to Puerto Rico. However, maintaining a Portal is no easy task. As a member of the WikiProject Puerto Rico, please consider helping out in one of the following tasks:

  • You can add Puerto Rico current events and news to the In the news... section as they occur.
  • You can participate in the discussion of Nominations for content nominated to Selected status.
  • You can nominate content for Selected status in the Nominations page.

Your help and contributions are greatly appreciated. Enjoy the Portal! - Mtmelendez (Talk|UB|Home) 03:49, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Main Page[edit]

Surprise! History of Puerto Rico has been selected for presentation on the Main Page for Monday, June 18, 2007 (tomorrow!). My congratulations to all editors who helped bring this important Puerto Rican topic to FA, especially to Joelito. But don't celebrate yet. There's two important things we should do:

  1. Review the article. Since it became FA, it has received extensive edits from users, and therefore may need copy-editing and MOS-adjustments for presentation. Some users related to the Main Page-selection process have already made many edits, and we should continue their good work to make sure the article is pristine.
  2. WATCH IT!! Given the Main Page's exposure (millions view it every day), FA articles which are presented there get viewed by many people, including vandals. Please watch the page carefully, reverting vandalism as you go. I've seen Main Page articles get overwhelmed with vandalism, and since many more people keep going to it on the Main Page, we don't want them to see a vandalized article. This is a 24 hour task (as long as its presented), and requires the collaboration of the entire Puerto Rico WikiProject.

Well, gente, take pride that on June 18, Puerto Rico's history will be presented on the grandest of pages in Wikipedia. Peace! - Mtmelendez (Talk|UB|Home) 10:14, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed guideline at Wikipedia:Overlistification[edit]

Wikipedia:Overlistification is a proposed guideline that intersects with my proposed guideline at Wikipedia:Proposed guideline for lists of people by ethnicity, religion, and other cultural categorizations. There are some good things in Wikipedia:Overlistification and some things that would need to be changed. In particular, the section "Irrelevant Intersections by Race, Gender, Beliefs, Sexuality, Ethnicity, and Religion Lists" appears similar to what I've proposed. Some tweaking of language would be needed, but the similarities are there.

Unfortunately, there is an appearance that Wikipedia:Overlistification is being created to bolster one side of the debate around the deletion of certain types of lists. I'm sure the same could be said for my proposed guideline. As people may know, the guidelines and policies which succeed at Wikipedia tend to be the ones which reach consensus from people on both sides of a debate. Perhaps we should merge info from Wikipedia:Proposed guideline for lists of people by ethnicity, religion, and other cultural categorizations with Wikipedia:Overlistification, bring in info from the current list guidelines, and see if we all can't reach a general consensus on this issue. Any thoughts on this? Is so, join the discussion at Wikipedia_talk:Overlistification#Problems_with_proposed_guidelines.2C_possible_ways_to_achieve_consensus. Héctor Lavoe‎[edit]

Demf, mi hermano I'm sorry but I will have to revert your edits to Héctor Lavoe‎, we (Borincano75 and me) are trying to give this article a Featured Article push, I don't know if ou have been part of a Featured Candidate discussion in the past, but those people are pushy, they want everything to have a source that's the reason the paragraphs you readded were deleted in the first place, I will keep the fixes you made but the paragraphs have to go unless they can be sourced, no hard fellings. - 21:39, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I knew this one was coming... about a mile away... Therefore, Hector Lavoe can be portrayed as a womanizer, drug addict and unprofessional buffoon as long as someone is quoted depicting him as such, while minor facts as earning a prize in a talent contest or getting a hitch back home are anathema, since I can't quote either Willie himself (who was a pen pal of mine for about two years) or a YouTube video of Papo Lucca saying so. Aw, well, rules are rules, after all. And after essentially wasting a full month of my life upgrading the Ramón Emeterio Betances article beyond what is demanded from GA articles, I'm convinced more and more of how FUCKED UP this whole Wiki business has become. I'm about to throw in the towel... This place has become a pain in the culo... Demf 04:32, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- 08:57, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination of Ay bendito[edit]

Ay bendito, an article you created, has been nominated for deletion. We appreciate your contributions. However, an editor does not feel that Ay bendito satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ay bendito and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Ay bendito during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Betances[edit]

The article you created and contributed heavily has just passed as GA, thanks to the efforts of User:Caribbean H.Q. and User:Boricuaeddie. I'm nominating it to peer review to see if we can get it featured. Espero que estes bien. - Mtmelendez (Talk|UB|Home) 02:08, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

August 31 [4] it was not hard getting it there though, you had done a great job with it and I can't understand how it wasn't at least GA, glad to see you are back. - Caribbean~H.Q. 14:06, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have one last request... have it nominated for Front Page status for September 23... that will be the icing on the cake... Demf 14:08, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I will give it a try when I come home from college in a few hours, never have tried a front page nom before so I kind of have to give a browse to the process. - Caribbean~H.Q. 14:14, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Parece que Tony se nos adelantó... aw, shucks... Me no like date for that one! He means well, of course. I'd suggest his article make the front page for the 24th, since whoever watches the documentary will probably be amazed by seeing the article the next day. But then again, he made the request for his first... Oh well... we'll come up with something...Demf 14:20, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Huh? Tony se nos adelanto, quien se lo hubiera imaginado, anyways when the people come in a find a FA they will be pleased with the quality of the article and will read it complete, after all this man had a incredibly interesting life, this will help a lot of young Boricuas learn of our history. I do have one last request of my own, that is that you hold on your wiki retirement for a bit longer, we have a lot of proceres articles that need FA and if we could get only half of the quality Betances has we can probably get two or three of these featured per month, we need the kind of dedication you put in these.- Caribbean~H.Q. 14:40, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
We'll see... my wife wouldn't be too pleased... ;-) Demf 14:55, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I see, anyways I was thinking Pedro Albizu Campos, please let me know if your wife gives you a thumbs up :-P - Caribbean~H.Q. 15:14, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, it appears Betances will be the featured article on Sept. 23 without any trouble [5]. - Caribbean~H.Q. 22:10, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sept. 23[edit]

Ask for "Betances" to be featured on 23 of September and then I will change my request for the "Hispanic Americans in World War II" for the 24th onward. I'll only do it after the request is placed so that no one else will jump in and request the 23rd. Tony the Marine 06:52, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello from a fellow Wiki-Freak...[edit]

I noticed that you are "medio quedao" from Wikipedia (I agree with you about the absurd removal of the Ay Bendito article). However, I joined the collaborators in the Puerto Rico project because: (1) I can't believe there was no reference to the documentary "A Step Away" and (2) I was apalled because some "idiota fumando pasto" from a foreign country which I would not mention to avoid a racial attack changed the Chayanne bio, stating that she was married to Chayanne. Hello! If anyone can claim that is me! Anyway, please check my first article: A Step Away. It is very short and not as deep as the Betances article (as a matter of fact, congratulations on the Feature), but it is also a part of Puerto Rico culture and history. You never know when you are going to see a Pan American Games again here (I am still skeptical about the Centroamerican Games in Mayagüez). And if you don't have any idea of my real name, my code name is Hash.--MissCurie 10:17, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Flag for Betances[edit]

Hello. Firstly, I would like to tell you that I admire you deeply and thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping get the Ramón Emeterio Betances article to FA quality. Secondly, I saw the discussion in the talk page about what flag should be used in the infobox. Forgive me if I am incorrect, but weren't this and this the flags of the Virreinato de Nueva España? --Agüeybaná 22:52, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If I'm not mistaken, Puerto Rico was given its own flag way before the Autonomy Charter was granted to the island in 1897. I can't remember it, though. My memory tends to point out that it was solid in color, or at least very plain-looking. I'm also not sure if it was merely a government flag of sorts, sort of the type of flags used by a branch of the armed forces in some places of the world. I did see it in the Internet, though. The virreinato flag would, in theory, be too old. It was probably the Spanish roja y gualda one with the Royal coat of arms.
Then again, placing it would attract a flame/edit war. I'd strongly suggest that no flags be used, but that's just me... Demf 14:09, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree; flag → unhappy people → edit war → downfall of Wikipedia :-) --Agüeybaná 03:51, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tribute to "the Marine"

I would like to pay a small tribute in this edition to Tony "the Marine". Editing since May 24, 2004, he has been one of our project's most active editors and has become one of Wikipedia's most recognized writers. He has authored over 400 articles, including 4 Featured Articles, 1 Featured List, 10 Good Articles, and 28 DYKs. His name has appeared in newspapers and magazines and has been mentioned by politicians and artists. He has brought Puerto Rico's history and its people to the web. He has shown the world that Puerto Ricans have done much more than just be gangsters and drug dealers. He has shown the world that we have contributed to history and the world just as much as any other group of people.

On September 29, 2007, Tony announced that we would not be writing for Wikipedia anymore. We, the members of this project, are sad that he will not be able to continue to spread the word of Hispanics' contributions here on the web, but I, for one, feel honored that he has entrusted us with the duty of continuing and improving his excellent work.

Tony, rest assured that your contributions, your wisdom, and the help you provided to all of us when we were new users will be remembered for generations. Que Dios te bendiga, Tony, y que tu recompensa sea grande en el Reino de los Cielos.

Viva Puerto Rico libre. —Agüeybaná 16:52, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Another editor has added the "{{prod}}" template to the article San Marcos (fictional), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Your copyedit request[edit]

On 26 April 2007, you made a request to the League of Copyeditors for a copyedit of Ramón Emeterio Betances. Because of a heavy backlog and a shortage of copyeditors, we have been unable to act on your request in a timely manner, for which we apologize. Since your request, this article may have been subject to significant editing and may no longer be a good candidate for copyediting by the League. If you still wish the League to copyedit this article, please review this article against our new criteria and follow the instructions on the Requests page. This will include your request in our new system, where it should receive more prompt attention. Finetooth (talk) 03:34, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Flags and records

Greetings, during the past months, there has been a lot of activity and active discussion surrounding articles within our scope. Of particular interest is one that took place in Flag of Puerto Rico, in which several project members exposed their points of view regarding the tones of our flag. Ultimately, research brought forth a severe loophole in the regulation employed by the Senate of Puerto Rico. Our flag doesn't have official tones! Attempting to prevent future conflicts, I presented a proposal in the project's talk page. The subsequent discussion served as an perfect example of consensus. Thanks to everyone for your participation. In other news, our friend Tony the Marine added another impressive achievement to his brilliant resume. On December 8, 2008, his DYK hook for Ivan Castro (soldier) broke the previous all-time record for more views, receiving 71,300 visits. Tony has also been actively cooperating with this Newsletter, the inclusion of a new "Did you Know?" section, was entirely his idea. - Caribbean~H.Q. 22:34, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ramito[edit]

Hey mi amigo, it's been a long time. I'll look into the Ramito situation. You know, La Tia de mi esposa, was one of Ramilto's Chillas. She would go with him to Los Moteles. Now get this, in order for my wife's aunt to meet with him she would take her nephew (my brother-in-law) who had a drivers license along. Ramito would then bring his daughter (she should be in her 60's now) along. He would tell the family that he was out for a drive. Once Ramito and my aunt left, his daughter would stay in the company of my brother-in-law (she had a crush on him) and you can guess what went on. I thought I would share this fun story with you. Tony the Marine (talk) 03:17, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: A nod to forever[edit]

Recently in my talk page I have been receiving very kind words which truly humble me. I thank everyone for those words, but I am only a small part of a wonderful group of Boricua Wikipedians who, regardless of their political or personal believes, have selfishly dedicated themselves to writing about the unbiased truth of the history and the amazing people of our wonderful and beautiful island. I thank God everyday that there are people like Joelr31, Caribbean H.Q., Pr4ever, Jmundo, Cerejota, Boricuaeddie, Mtmelendez and Demf just to mention a few, whose contributions are helping to create an awareness that despite the size of our island, we are a people that have a lot to be proud of. I firmly believe "Un pueblo que no conoce la verdadera historia de su pasado, no esta capcitada para elijir su futuro" and you can quote me on that. Gracias y que Dios los bendiga. Tony the Marine (talk) 04:20, 29 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Are you still interested in getting it to FA Status, I have done a few small changes to the article and I would be willing to help to get it to FA status, especialy since the article will probably be getting more trafic with the upcoming 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games.

El Johnson (talk) 16:08, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can only try doing so during Xmas vacations. I'm truly swamped, and I do think the article is fughly in its current version; we can improve it a lot. Demf (talk) 19:20, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just to let you know that I merged Isidoro García Baseball Stadium (2009) with Isidoro García Baseball Stadium‎, still the article needs lots of help, if you have any references please let me know. El Johnson (talk) 18:13, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good call. I'm not the best researcher when it comes to the Indios and their history. I did maintain their official web page once, though, so I do know people who might help. Let's see what I can do. Demf (talk) 19:20, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Coincidentally, I am currently working on the improvement of some of the PRBL's articles. Among the books bought there is one named Crónicas de un Carga bates Indio that we might be able to use. - Caribbean~H.Q. 01:31, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ha, that one is a bit of a joke. Granted, the guy was the bat boy for the Indios, so he had quite a few original anecdotes to refer to, but most of the facts behind the book were actually researched by Israel Peña and myself. He quoted WP, and by having our article turned into a book, he gave us a working reference. However, he gave us no credit for it (nor any royalties...) Demf (talk) 20:42, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Nice, we get circular benefit. Even if the guy was seeking some personal glory, by failing to ackowledge us, we get to use the book as a independent source. Still, he was cojiendo pon badly, but for a bat boy those will most likely end up being his 15-minutes of fame. Wait until the PRBL draft is done, it will come out rather well for a book that basically tries to push how important the various ‘gringos’ were to the league, failing to give every native player, except Clemente, some decent coverage. In my draft I'm going to revert that pattern, only mentioning the import players that were actually relevant, instead of the varage that is included in this book. - Caribbean~H.Q. 08:11, 3 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Calle 13: Revisited[edit]

Some Grammys later, I still think that we should promote this article. What do you say? - Caribbean~H.Q. 04:01, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. It does need quite a lot of updating beforehand. I actually met René recently; I'm sure he wants to set the record straight about a few things. I also have a ton of info that is accurate but may risk the rather stupid "original research" tag. Can we try having me draft and you adding the references? (I can copy and paste links to you if needed) Demf (talk) 19:16, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. I dislike that particular policy, since some people want sources for everything. However, we can override it. For example, I did it once after Miguel Cotto's ex-mistress unexpectedly e-mailed me a copy of an official document. René's official Twitter account has been quoted several times by Primera Hora and other media outlets. If they get picky, we can override it if he simply certifies the content's veracity. - Caribbean~H.Q. 01:26, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:GilbertMamery.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:GilbertMamery.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 07:52, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sheesh. Gilbert was my boss once. He used to use that pic as part of his radio station's promotional pack. Only learned about this after the damage is done. Oh well, these are the little WP annoyances that keep me from editing any longer... Demf (talk) 14:05, 28 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please refrain from introducing inappropriate pages, such as Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Demf, to Wikipedia. Doing so is not in accordance with our policies. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference[edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 18:22, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article Julio Victor Ramirez, Jr. has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

WP:N, WP:V Can't find any references to this investigative journalist, although I did find an article from his father (who is also referenced).

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. joe deckertalk to me 15:54, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Demoting FAs[edit]

The short answer, if you didn't see it already, is that there is a process called Featured Article Review, or WP:FAR. The slightly longer answer is that you have to raise the issues with the article on its talk page first. Give that a few weeks, and then you can open a FAR, which reviews the article. The FAR page has all of the details on how to nominate it for review, and what will happen next, but it's basically a three-stage process (including the talk page discussion). The article will only be demoted if it gets through the last stage unsuccessfully. Imzadi 1979  16:32, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Titi Ruth[edit]

Thanks for the source. Though Wikipedia prefers secondary sources, we could not deny that the one talking is, in effect, Titi Ruth. I have made the adjustment but with the added citation which I hope will stand, otherwise we may have to place it at External Links. Regards. Mercy11 (talk) 02:25, 13 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

FAR notifications[edit]

Please read the instructions at WP:FAR and complete the notifications that should have been done two weeks ago for Wikipedia:Featured article review/Héctor Lavoe/archive1. Thanks, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 03:01, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Demf! Just to let you know, the notifications have been completed. However, in the future, when you nominate an article at WP:FAR, you need to notify the major contributors and the major projects. You can see the talk pages listed at the top of the Lavoe FAR for examples of how this is done.
Also, when you nominate an article for FAR, when basing your issues with the article on completeness, you need to provide examples of sources not used in the article that could be used to improve comprehensiveness. So, instead of just saying "Not sufficient details are developed within the article to elaborate on Lavoe's professional and personal life, particularly in the mid 1970s, when he was most successful.", you should say this and then add something like, "Sources covering this information can be found in example book title by example author and example journal article in example magazine. It would be great if you could add this information into your FAR nomination of the Lavoe article.

File permission problem with File:Picture of David Castro, who coined the phrase "Los Indios de Mi Pueblo".jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Picture of David Castro, who coined the phrase "Los Indios de Mi Pueblo".jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 16:28, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please also check any other files you may have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads.
