Thanks for your contributions! Good expansion. This one was marginal as a nom though, (it was almost not a stub before) mostly I took it for the neat pic. ++Lar: t/c 14:16, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I thought the same thing, but it still had the stub tag, so I figured what the hey, might as well submit it. Davepape 02:54, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Buffalo primary[edit]

Thanks for clarifying the bit about Helfer; you were right about the way it sounded. But I was confused when I originally edited the section and still am somewhat. Is the primary the precursor to a run-off, the way senators from Louisiana are elected? Municipal elections here are all nonpartisan because of the California "don't trust the politicians" mentality. :) Moulder 01:26, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder if you know where the line "Ah loves dat man!" actually comes from. I know it's a line from "St. Louis Blues", but I am fairly certain it was connected with a black female entertainer of around the time of the cartoon, one of the Warner writers endless radio-and-movie references. Trouble is, I can't find out whose catchphrase that was. Any ideas? Wahkeenah 04:19, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Brady Handy photos[edit]

Please avoid adding duplicate Brady-Handy photos when a higher res version can simply be uploaded over the older version. This can create confusion and is a bit of a waste of server space. Thanks. --tomf688 (talk - email) 01:38, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry - much of it's handled by a semi-automated process to generate a consistent naming scheme and descriptions for the hundreds of files. The vast majority of the existing lower res photos that are duplicated are ones that are on en.wikipedia rather than commons (or have different source info and may not be exactly the same); Reverdy Johnson slipped past. Also, as the wikimedia software retains all past versions of an image, uploading a new one over the old one does not save significant space. --Davepape 04:37, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

An internal link to the Simulated reality page has been added and then dropped from David Deutsch . It is actually quite relevant, since Deutsch discusses the subject in Fabric Of Reality. (The current page is rather WP:POV, but that is a separate issue).1Z 16:03, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: PD-Layout[edit]

Yes, I noticed that is ends up as "junk"... but it's a by-produce of the "move to commons" tool I use. I'm not specifically adding it, it's the tool that does it. Yes, I could remove that text, but it would slow me down, and for something as minor as a little bit of yucky code showing (that doesn't really affect anything on the page at least) I think it's a trivial problem. Unless you tell me otherwise, I will continue not to bother with this. I shall notify the tool owner to see if they can do anything to fix this bug though. Thank you for notifying me. --MECUtalk 15:43, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Charlotte Casiraghi photo source[edit]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Charlotte_Casiraghi.jpg

At the time I found the photo the source link provided worked and was accurate. The photo was released into the public domain by Rita Janssen, however, it seems either the photo was moved or taken down and now the link directs to a different photo. If this now means that the photo must be removed, then I regret that but at the time I found the photo the information given was accurate. I'm sorry for any trouble this causes, please let me know if there's something I may do so that the image is permissible. It seems that the "VIP birth and deathdays" is Rita's account, and I've sent a flickrmail to ask about the photo and check its status again to be sure its labeling is accurate. --Jonjames1986 (talk) 21:51, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Dutch 5 cent.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Dutch 5 cent.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 21:34, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bovet images[edit]

I didn't properly label some of the images for the Bovet Fleurier article, specifically Image:Ed bovet.jpg and Image:Bovet August 1944.jpg. I have attempted to fix. Please notify me if the attempt was insufficient so that I have time to remedy before removal, because the Image:Bovet August 1944.jpg image is essential to the content of the article in the section in which it is used. Thank you for your assistance with legally using these pictures. Zoticogrillo (talk) 19:33, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, there's not much more information that I can give. I came across the Image:Ed bovet.jpg when I was in Europe, which initiated my interest. The postcard-like photo has no more information other than the name of the individual. The same image can be found at http://www.bovetfleurier.com . The newspaper article was sent to me by a watchmaker/historian from the U.K. He didn't know the information of the newspaper, other that someone had labeled it as 1944. Based on the history of the styles of watches found in watch collecting books, and the style of the watch in the ad, that date is accurate. Bovet watches were not made between 1950 and the late 1990's, therefore we can be sure based on other verifiable information that the newspaper was published before 1968 and before 1975. This is all the information I have, and seems too narrative and unuseful for the image description. Yes, wiki articles need to have verifiable info, which means we do the best that we can, but just because the citations are not perfect does not mean that the information is untrue or needs to be removed. There is a presumption of good will and accuracy, and in this case there is already enough info to establish that the images are not totally bogus. Zoticogrillo (talk) 15:48, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I provided all the information possible about the images. They were removed. What minimal information needs to exist for an image to not be removed? Zoticogrillo (talk) 07:22, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Courchesne LandscapeOne.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Courchesne LandscapeOne.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Re-Notability of Rich Kegler and Carima El-Behairy[edit]

Hi,

I meant to send this to you earlier. Here's the assignment from Wednesday:

1. Kevin Bacon 2. John Edwards 3. Barack Obama 4. Ronald Regan 5. Gerald Ford 6. Chevy Chase

Here's the article from the WNYBAC I created, which has been subsequently deleted:

The Western New York Book Arts Collaborative(WNYBAC)is a non-profit organization located at the corner of E. Mohawk and Washington Street, occupying an abandoned department store in Buffalo's downtown district. The WNYBAC was founded by husband and wife team, Richard Kegler and Carima El-Behairy, who also run P22 Fonts Online. The WNYBAC offers year-round classes and art shows, showcasing the printed form, and teaching students the art of letterpress printing.

As of the 2008, the building the WNYBAC inhabits is still under renovation. When completed, it will house a museum, cafe, and classrooms, where students at every level can learn and practice the art of typography.

I also wanted to create an article about the Richardson Olmstead Complex, since it is a historic building and there is talk of renovating it and using it for new purposes. I think the article would appeal to architecture buffs, but then again I can't predict what will be tagged for speedy deletion! by some of the admins.

Image copyright problem with Image:Sandin DeathsDoorGardenPeninsula.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Sandin DeathsDoorGardenPeninsula.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Rawey Kased: Images & Licenses[edit]

Hello Dave, I just want talk more about using other peoples images. Now this photographer that I know of, allowed me to use all the images that I want to use. The thing is, I don't want to keep requesting one by one. He also asked me do I need a website to use as a source in order to use the image. Is there an easier way of asking for the images. Like for instance, he would reply back to 'permissions-commonswikimedia.org' saying I can use all the images or he allows me to put a license on it saying it's my image (giving me the copyright). How do I explain to him about this situation? How can I go about this? wikiraw31 (talk) 15:51, 20 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

License[edit]

Hi, I looked at that page, and there are many examples of requests, but not a simple one sentence grant example. I think those people will grant it provided we give them a sample sentence, to avoid many emails. Is this good enough: "We grant permission for use within Wikipedia as a free license, to be used also by Wikipedia users". The key to get these permissions I think is not to overload those people with 17 pages of legal text, but give them a simple sentence that they cna understand. Please provide a simple enough sentence to avoid many messages. Thanks. History2007 (talk) 05:14, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

hi - not sure how to improve the sourcing for this image. three years ago, i made that low-res scan of an old photo which had been reprinted in a (library) book. picture was snapshot originally owned by nelson. details in book said photographer unknown, which i noted on the image page. i reduced/cropped the image from the original. age of photo and lack of specified credits indicated public domain. Do I understand that to apply to all images on the entire WGA [1] site? If so, can we use those images in Wikipedia after download? Thank you. History2007 (talk) 23:48, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the detailed response you provided on my talk page. History2007 (talk) 00:23, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

On Photographs[edit]

Dear Davepape, the task that you have confronted me with is just unsurmountable! I shall do whatever I can, but there are many things that are simply undoable. Take for instance the photographs of Tangeh Bolaghi. The website at issue, from where I have the pertinent photographs, has simply disappeared: its owners have not renewed their subscription with as consequence that even the domain name of the website is no longer in existence (I know this because when the last time I attempted to visit this website, it turned out that the web host had made the domain name available to new buyers). And, I can assure you that there was no legal restriction regarding use of these photographs (even despite this fact, at the time I wrote to the owners of the website and informed them that I had used some of their photographs, and in doing so acknowledged their website - this fact is reflected in my statements on the pertinent image pages). Now, you could delete these photographs, but that would serve no purpose.

I feel compelled to be somewhat impertinent and ask you one question regarding an issue that has mystified me: why, as an Assistant Professor, have you taken on yourself to carry out this menial task of tagging photographs uploaded by me? I am simply dumbfounded by your zealotry in distroying the work that I have done, at great cost to my precious time (I am an academic and can tell you that, e.g., Dame Mary Cartwright was a personal friend of mine - rather than tagging the photograph of this deceased woman, you, as an Assistant Professor, could have taken the trouble and through Google-Image traced the origin of the photograph --- with due respect, I am mystified by this destructive attitude of the people like you; the urge to deface a woman long since dead is just beyond my comprehension). Perhaps you wish to reconsider your recent taggings and possibly proceed with making some real intellectual contribution to Wikipedia. Please forgive me for disparaging your work, but given the fact that university professors are being paid partly by my tax money, I feel somewhat justified in being critical of academics who spend their precious times on issues for which one actually needs no education (I am being frank with you because I see you as a junior colleague of mine, one who has annoyed me, beyond what I am capable of tolerating, by his anti-intellectual zealotry - I had not have been as frank, and uncourteous, had you not introduced yourself as an Assistant Professor on your Wikipedia page). Perhaps you wish to amend your ways by thinking of ways for saving the photographs that you have so passionately, and heartlessly, tagged for deletion in the course of the past hours (please note that I will not gain a penny, nor will I lose a penny, by the maintenance or deletion of these tagged photographs - I have been solely attempting to save something valuable for the posterity). Please do not come back to me with what the Wikipedia rules prescribe (I already know these rules too well) and that you have been merely enforcing these rules; be constructive and save the photographs for a global readership for many years to come.

With kind regards, --BF 22:28, 15 December 2008 (UTC).[reply]

Dan Wentworth: Grades[edit]

Hey Dave,

Sorry to bother you, but I had one issue concerning my UB learns grade sheet for Wikimedia that I would like to address. It is recorded that I got a 0/10 on assignment 7 (add info and cite a reliable reference). I did add a reference and some information to the Iberville Parish article on October 3rd at 17:55 under my anonymous IP address, and again at 17:57 after I realized my mistake and logged in. I wasn’t logged in when I added the bulk of the information and the reference so that’s probably where the confusion arose. I was wondering if you could revisit my contributions page and take a look. I would greatly appreciate it. Again, thanks for your time and have a happy holiday.

Sincerely,
