Greenwood Laboratory School

I have no idea which revisions need revdel at Greenwood Laboratory School, especially as the copvio detector seems to be down. Have you any idea what might be the last clean(ish) version? It might just be simplest to revdel everything subsequent to that or nuke it and start again if we can't find a clean version. Thanks. Nthep (talk) 15:34, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

@Nthep: Yeah, sorry - I didn't quite realise how the tag would work when I added commentary! I have no idea when the copy-vio appeared - It seemed to me that pretty much all of the content on the page was a direct copy-and-paste from various pages on the school website. I'm pretty comfortable that my version doesn't have copyvio, so the latter option of nuking it and treating my edits as the first version of a new page might be quicker and cleaner? Best, Darren-M talk 15:38, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
No problem. All done. Sometimes it's the only option when it's been ongoing for years and difficult to untangle. Nthep (talk) 15:45, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

Not vandalism

Hi Darren-M, I just saw that you reverted an edit here: [1], that added "pizza" to the "see also" section of the article about manakish. I don't see how it's "nonconstructive". Pizza is historically related to manakish; see for example the pita article. According to WP:SEEALSO, "see also" sections "enable readers to explore tangentially related topics". In fact, pizza is even linked in the lead paragraph of the article - though because of that it should actually not be in "see also", per WP:NOTSEEALSO. So the main reason I'm leaving this message is becase I also saw that you gave the user a level-1 "vandalism" warning: [2]. Their edit is not in any way vandalism, which is the malicious defacing or damaging of Wikipedia. It was clearly a good-faith and reasonable effort to improve Wikipedia. I've taken the liberty of removing the warning template; if you disagree you can reinstate it and/or we can discuss it further. I'm asking you to try to be careful about leaving "vandalism" warnings unless an edit really is blatant vandalsim; otherwise it may go against our policies. Thanks... --IamNotU (talk) 02:26, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

@@IamNotU: Thanks for the heads-up, good spot. Cheers, Darren-M talk 12:39, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

Santiago STEAM Magnet School name Change

Hello,

I recently added STEAM Magnet to the name of the school I teach at. We have officialy changed the name of our school from Santiago Elementary School to Santiago STEAM Magnet Elementary School. https://www.svusd.org/schools/elementary-m-z/santiago

@Broski499: Thank you. Apologies, the edit looked like vandalism. Please go ahead and re-do it. It might be useful to include that link in your edit summary to help document why you have made the the change. PS, if you comment on a talk page, please end your comment with four ~ (~~~~) which will automatically add your name and a timestamp. Best, Darren-M talk 18:51, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

Weldon Kennedy

I'm Weldon's Grandson and currently writing his obituary

@67.1.119.71: Hi. I'm sorry for your loss, and thank you for striving to maintain the accuracy of Wikipedia. Because deaths are particularly sensitive and because we need to be careful not to fall foul of hoaxes, we shouldn't update somebody as deceased until it can be verified using a reliable source. This helps us to avoid misinformation.. I would suggest waiting to update the article until it has been reported (e.g. in an obituaries section of a newspaper) and then proceeding to edit the article. Depending on whether you intend to edit anything else connected to Weldon Kennedy, you may also want to read about our conflict of interest guidelines which talk through how to go about editing for a subject that you have a relationship or vested interest with. Best wishes, Darren-M talk 19:44, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

The name of Karur is change to Karoor

Hi Darren,

The name of the district Karur is officially changed to Karoor by chief minister of Tamilnadu, India in June 2020. A total of 1000+ names of places in Tamilnadu were changed.

@Dineshkathiresan: I'll have a look into it, thanks. We do need to tackle the page name being amended too if that is the case. Best, Darren-M talk 12:50, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
@Dineshkathiresan: Hi there. I've come across this discussion at the Project India discussion board which seems to be looking at the logistics of this. I would suggest contributing to the discussion there - there is naturally a concern about the logistics of handling over a thousand page moves. Best, Darren-M talk 20:00, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

Pending changes

Yesterday you accepted a edit at Boxing,[3] which was performed by an edit-warring IP (thought by at least one editor to be a block evader) and that was the subject of a request for page protection. The added material is not supported by the source given. I have therefore undone the edit. DrKay (talk) 07:27, 19 June 2020 (UTC)

@DrKay: Thanks for the heads up and for resolving. Best, Darren-M talk 09:27, 19 June 2020 (UTC)

what is wrong with the orginial lede sources of Miscegenation

why did you change the lede sourcing, and can you please explain why your new sources are better than the original? Gooduserdude (talk) 08:38, 19 June 2020 (UTC)

@Gooduserdude: The definition provided by Dictionary.com conflicts with other assertions on the page, for example In the present day, the word miscegenation is avoided by many scholars, because the term suggests that race is a concrete biological phenomenon, rather than a categorization imposed on certain relationships. The term's historical use in contexts that typically implied disapproval is also a reason why more unambiguously neutral terms such as interracial, interethnic or cross-cultural are more common in contemporary usage.. The inclusion of 'considered to be' better reflects the lack of public consensus, meaning an alternative definition was more suitable. I have no overall view on the broad reliability of the existing source vs my replacement, but in this situation I think the replacement better reflects the article as drafted. Hope this helps. Please read this notice carefully.

You are receiving this notice because you recently edited one or more pages relating to blockchain or cryptocurrencies topics. You have not done anything wrong. We just want to alert you that "general" sanctions are authorized for certain types of edits to those pages.

A community decision has authorized the use of general sanctions for pages related to blockchain and cryptocurrencies. The details of these sanctions are described here. All pages that are broadly related to these topics are subject to a one revert per twenty-four hours restriction, as described here.

General sanctions is a system of conduct regulation designed to minimise disruption in controversial topic areas. This means uninvolved administrators can impose sanctions for edits relating to these topics that do not adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, our standards of behaviour, or relevant policies. Administrators may impose sanctions such as editing restrictions, bans, or blocks. An editor can only be sanctioned after the editor has been made aware that general sanctions are in effect. It is only effective if it is logged here. Before continuing to edit pages in these topic areas, please familiarise yourself with the general sanctions system. Don't hesitate to contact me or another editor if you have any questions.

Privacy Question / Concern

Hello Darren,

I saw your response and was curious, what if the Public Official doesn't consent to their place of residence being published on Wikipedia?

Thanks - Ike54321 (talk) 00:26, 20 June 2020 (UTC)

Ike54321 I believe the following would then apply, from Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons#Legal_issues:

Legal issues

Subjects who have legal or other serious concerns about material they find about themselves on a Wikipedia page, whether in a BLP or elsewhere, may contact the Wikimedia Foundation's volunteer response team (known as OTRS). Please e-mail info-en-q@wikimedia.org with a link to the article and details of the problem; for more information on how to get an error corrected, see here. It is usually better to ask for help rather than trying to change the material yourself.

As noted above, individuals involved in a significant legal or other off-wiki dispute with the subject of a biographical article are strongly discouraged from editing that article.

Thanks for weighing in on the B/O Templates

Glad that you noticed the templates on Institutional racism. I don't usually answer but you made me aware of how my POV may have affected my answer to having tags placed that make the article seem contested, when we did contest it 5 years ago quite extensively, as I recall some of the fights resulted in time-outs. I wanted to call the editor out for what I see as a white-wash, but that term has been shelved as it is seen as combative. Using verbosity and non-neutral POV as leverage to make an article on what are valid complaints of people of color against the 'system' is a tired trope from intellectuals who want to provide 'cover'- but not violate WP rules against such actions. If an editor adds to an article or raises valid questions about grammar, I'm stepping back and lurking in the shadows. This was a whistle that I had to call out, I was just waiting for someone else to do so first so I couldn't be accused of claiming ownership. In the end, If I ignore the larger attempts to de-legitimize the argument I originally made, and no one else does, the argument can then be made to delete the article. Thanks for seeing the greater picture... CaptJayRuffins (talk) 19:11, 24 June 2020 (UTC)

Scripts++ Newsletter – Issue 16

Subway article

Okay, I don't really care at this point, but how is it I was only notified yesterday about an article I created being proposed for deletion and then it already redirects to the main Subway article? Just kind of curious, was there a discussion? Thanks! Jgera5 (talk) 12:23, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

Jgera5, Hiya. I initially added a PROD template before deciding that a redirect would make more sense. Happy to open a dialogue, but as my edit summary says - I don't see that the Subway $5 footlong promotion article was adding anything noteworthy that wasn't already covered in the Subway (restaurant) article. Best, Darren-M talk 14:12, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
OK, I'm not concerned at this point. I think in hindsight you did the right thing. Jgera5 (talk) 17:39, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics

Hi Darren, Regarding "Thought Leaders" Wikipedia has an entry on "thought leader," which says : "A thought leader is an individual or firm that is recognized as an authority in a specialized field and whose expertise is sought and often rewarded," citing a Forbes story. In the context of the Knight Commission, the phrase "whose expertise is sought" applies, but not the end of that phrase, "rewarded."

Also I wanted to point out that Knight Commission is not a lobby group.

Do you also review the other edits as well? Thank you. 71.163.180.15 (talk) 18:58, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi 71.163.180.15. 'Thought leader' is not a neutral term, the description you have linked is indicative of that. We need to make sure that our articles have a neutral point of view so we should not be referring to a body in a way which suggests an opinion unless we are saying who that opinion belongs to.
I'm not sure what other edits you're referring to? Best, Darren-M talk 19:40, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

Editing news 2020 #3

On 16 March 2020, the 50 millionth edit was made using the visual editor on desktop.

Seven years ago this week, the Editing team made the visual editor available by default to all logged-in editors using the desktop site at the English Wikipedia. Here's what happened since its introduction:

  • The 50 millionth edit using the visual editor on desktop was made this year. More than 10 million edits have been made here at the English Wikipedia.
  • More than 2 million new articles have been created in the visual editor. More than 600,000 of these new articles were created during 2019.
  • Almost 5 million edits on the mobile site have been made with the visual editor. Most of these edits have been made since the Editing team started improving the mobile visual editor in 2018.
  • The proportion of all edits made using the visual editor has been increasing every year.
  • Editors have made more than 7 million edits in the 2017 wikitext editor, including starting 600,000 new articles in it. The 2017 wikitext editor is VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode. You can enable it in your preferences.
  • On 17 November 2019, the first edit from outer space was made in the mobile visual editor.
  • In 2019, 35% of the edits by newcomers, and half of their first edits, were made using the visual editor. This percentage has been increasing every year since the tool became available.
