Western Sahara articles

Thanks As you can see from the histories, I started a lot of the content, but as you can also see, I let it fall fallow a long time ago as well. It's always been in the back of my mind to increase the quality of these articles and I'm always glad for help on Western Sahara-related topics. Yeah, I noticed there is a lot to improve, but I still think the project is a very good start to work on. It seems like what is really needed is more editors, since it's a huge topic to be covered. Regarding the grant story covered in Bergens Tidende, it's an interesting story worth mentioning, but it should be put in context, not added as an "external link" as you did. Module:UnitTests/doc

Hello. You linked to Module:ScribuntoUnit from this page, but did not explain how those two modules are related to each other. Is one intended to replace another? Will one be more conservative and stable and the other bleeding-edge and feature-rich? I want to copy a "test framework" to an another Wikipedia and wonder which module to choose. Could you add a short explanation what's the difference between the two modules?

Btw, if you want to advertise ScribuntoUnit, please note how Wikipedia:Lua#Unit testing is written - it only mentions one module for unit testing. --Derbeth ^talk 21:45, 1 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Added a short note now. I was actually in the same situation as you – I started transfering Module:UnitTests to nowiki, but then came across Module:ScribuntoUnit and happened to prefer the coding style of the latter. Happy New Year, and welcome to a special double issue of Books & Bytes. We've included a retrospective on the changes and progress TWL has seen over the last year, the results of the survey TWL participants completed in December, some of our plans for the future, a second interview with a Wiki Love Libraries coordinator, and more. Here's to 2014 being a year of expansion and innovation for TWL!

The Wikipedia Library completed the first 6 months of its Individual Engagement grant last week. Here's where we are and what we've done:

Increased access to sources: 1500 editors signed up for 3700 free accounts, individually worth over $500,000, with usage increases of 400-600%

Deep networking: Built relationships with Credo, HighBeam, Questia, JSTOR, Cochrane, LexisNexis, EBSCO, New York Times, and OCLC

New pilot projects: Started the Wikipedia Visiting Scholar project to empower university-affiliated Wikipedia researchers

Developed community: Created portal connecting 250 newsletter recipients, 30 library members, 3 volunteer coordinators, and 2 part-time contractors

Tech scoped: Spec'd out a reference tool for linking to full-text sources and established a basis for OAuth integration

Broad outreach: Wrote a feature article for Library Journal's The Digital Shift; presenting at the American Library Association annual meeting

The Wikipedia Library: New Account Coordinators Needed

fetchLanguageName('no', ...)

Perhaps you can answer this question for me. At Help talk:Citation Style 1/Archive 6#An ISO 639-1 language name test I discovered that mw.language.fetchLanguageName('no', 'en') appears to return the wrong value when given ISO639-1 code no. I think that it should return 'Norwegian' but instead it returns 'Norwegian (bokmål)', a variant of the official language name assigned to ISO639-1 code nb – code nb should be 'Norwegian Bokmål'; title case without the parentheses. The magic word which appears to use the same Wikimedia resources also exhibits the problem:

{{#language:no|en}} → Norwegian

Interestingly:

{{#language:no|no}} → norsk

{{#language:nb|no}} → norsk bokmål

{{#language:nn|no}} → norsk nynorsk

My question to you is: What, from your perspective, is the correct return value in English for code 'no'?

To save you some confusion, there is a workaround in place in Module:Citation/CS1/sandbox that 'fixes' this issue so the CS1 examples now show 'Norewegian' when |language=no so all of the citation examples at Help talk:Citation Style 1/Archive 6#An ISO 639-1 language name test that purport to show the problem don't actually show the problem now.

@Trappist the monk: I guess there's actually no easy answer to that :) Historically 'no' has been used for 'Bokmål', which is the dominant of the two variants 'Bokmål' and 'Nynorsk', (which are btw. really similar). And it is still used as the site prefix for Norwegian Bokmål Wikipedia (no.wikipedia.org), while we have changed the content language code to 'nb'. Today, following ISO 639, 'no' is technically 'Norwegian' (meaning "unspecified variant of Norwegian; either Bokmål or Nynorsk"), but in practice 'Bokmål' since 'Nynorsk' has always used the code 'nn'. The situation is quite unfortunate, and causes a lot of confusion. Well, if I were to choose, I think I would stick with the default output from mw.language.fetchLanguageName() since 'Norwegian' is formally not a written language, only 'Norwegian Bokmål' and 'Norwegian Nynorsk' are. Another option would be to just deprecate the code. – Danmichaelo (talk) 20:01, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

That similarity between Bokmål and Nynorsk is, I think, undetectable by those of us who live in the great desert wastelands of North America. If we consult some source written in either variant, we won't go too far astray if we cite that source using |language=no and that renders as (in Norwegian); especially since we can't tell the difference. Of course, over here, I suspect that most of us haven't got a clue that there are variants; I didn't until I tweaked the code and got those unexpected results.

@Trappist the monk: Hehe, that's a valid point that didn't come to my mind :) If you're not sure if a text is Bokmål or Nynorsk, it can surely be practical to be able to label it as just 'Norwegian' (using the 'no' code), that should be totally ok. – Danmichaelo (talk) 22:26, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

I came to that realization when I looked at Category:Articles_with_non-English-language_external_links and noticed the huge discrepancy between Norwegian‎ (2 C, 4,935 P), Norwegian Bokmål‎ (46 P), and Norwegian Nynorsk‎ (17 P). We at enwiki hadn't a clue. Wouldn't be the first time we were / are clueless

You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Hello, Danmichaelo. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
