I see you retargeted this redirect to Stars (band). The problem with this is that there were a huge number of incoming links from topics talking about stars in the astronomical sense, and by changing the redirect, it became nonsensical. Redirects are used for a couple things: to aid in common searches, and to help people make links. For both of these a redirect should point to the more well-known term, and I think the astronomical term is a lot more well known than the band. In the future, if you change a redirect, please check "What links here" first to make sure you're not introducing problems. --Dgies 17:52, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
- I didn't realize that was true; next time I really should look there. The problem that I have is that although the word Star is definitely better known than the band Stars, Stars in reference to the heavenly bodies isn't so important of a term, as it's just another grammatical term. When I made the change, I thought that (without considering the implications of "What Links Here") people looking to read about the scientific meaning of Star would either not often type in Stars or not be very put out if they did type in Stars and get a band anyways. I'd like to try and find some way to make this more workable; however, the amount of articles that just link to stars are considerable. DamionOWA 08:17, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
- I'd have to disagree with your statement "Stars in reference to the heavenly bodies isn't so important of a term, as it's just another grammatical term". The sheer number of incoming links from pages talking about the celestial object show that the primary use of "stars" on Wikipedia is talking about the plural of star, the object. Redirects, such as Stars->Star are also used as an aid for search terms. In this case, they should redirect to the most commonly expected result, in this case, the object. For people searching for a less common meaning, we use disambiguation pages, such as Star (disambiguation), which lets people pick between the dozen or so things which are also called "Stars" (plural). - Before I start here, I'll first say that I'll reply here from now on, as I see you removed my entry from your talk page. Secondly, I agree that Stars should not be changed as a redirect, and I'm replying only for the sake of interesting debate. If you want to consider yourself done with the matter, that's okay.
- The argument I have is based on the function that the word "stars" serves as an astronomical term in the English language. That is, it's not a term; it's a grammatical variation of a term. Wikipedia provides a decent metaphor, in this case. The astronomical word "stars" contains no substance; it is a redirect to a term that refers to a heavenly body. My argument for making Stars point to Stars (band) is that while the astronomical term "stars" contains no meaning of its own, the band name Stars is concrete and empirical. Having read Wikipedia:Naming conventions, I can see that the best course of action is the most common use of the word. Still, I believe that had the article for Stars been established prior to the majority of the What Links Here entries for that redirect, the authors would have without thought have used the | operator to change the appearance of the wikilink while still pointing to star. Although I agree, under sober second thought, that this argument is not strong enough to justify changing the redirect, I believe that the argument is valid enough to justify defense, and I have too much spare time, so I might as well. It is understandable that a star and Stars are different things, but the problem is that when someone types in "stars" in the search box, it is more than likely that they are trying to find star. Similarly, if someone is writing an article, and they type the code
[[stars]]or[[star]]s, they are usually referring to the celestial-body star.
