Editing other user's talk page posts and user pages[edit]

Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, discussion pages are meant to be a record of a discussion; deleting or editing legitimate comments, as you did at User talk:Marchjuly, is considered bad practice, even if you meant well. Even making spelling and grammatical corrections in others' comments is generally frowned upon, as it tends to irritate the users whose comments you are correcting. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:58, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi DBhaiji. While you most likely meant well, you should really avoid editing the talk page posts and user pages made by others, unless there's a really really good policy or guideline based reason for doing so like some of the ones explained in WP:TPO or WP:UPNOT. Talk pages and user pages aren't held to the same standards as articles; so, there's no need to go around adding Wikilinks to them or making other types of minor corrections. Some people may not mind when you do this and may even thank you for it, but others might get quite upset when you edit their posts or user pages. If there's something about a post that you don't understand or you think an error was made that somehow affects the meaning of the post, then it's OK to ask for clarification; however, you shouldn't try to fix things yourself, particulary when the post is made by another user who is posting something on their own user talk page or there own user page. If you think a user page isn't in compliance with WP:UP, then it's probably a good idea to follow the advice given in WP:NOBAN and WP:UP#On others' user pages first unless it's a clear-cut and serious policy violation that requires immediate action. If you weren't aware of any of this and just made some mistakes, then that's OK; if, however, you keep doing this type of thing, your account has a good chance of being blocked by a Wikipedia administrator for disruption. Just to clarify, it's OK for you to continue to try and fix disambiguation and other link-related issues in articles (you should be familiar with MOS:LINK though if you're going to do that), but there's no need for you to do so on user pages, user talk pages, article talk pages, or more general noticeboards. -- Marchjuly (talk) 09:19, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
