Re: Copyright[edit]

Thank you for making me aware of this. I copy and pasted the plot summaries from The Blacklist (season 1) and wanted them to correspond with each article. Most of the copyright violation notices I got came from a website called megashare.info, which looked like a spam video streaming website. I figured since it came from a website like this, those messages could be disregarded. However, I now know that is not the case and will work to get plot summaries put together for each article that was affected by these copyright violations. Hi TheGreenGiant23! This is actually a very easy one to fix. Basically, anyone can copy and use text from articles here, as long as they say where they got it from. On those Pan Am ones, it looks like you used the intro text from another article (possibly another year of the same event), and that caused the CorenSearchBot to tag them, notify you, and then open a case for someone to investigate. So we just need to attribute that text: it doesn't even have to be in the article itself, so won't disrupt what you've written.
The fix is just to make an edit to the article (any edit will do), and have the edit summary say something like "Article created with content copied from [[Article name here]], see that page for attribution." You can see some articles where I've done that, here, here, and here. It really is that simple!

If you want, I'll be more than happy to apply the needed attributions if you can just tell me what the source pages were for the above. Or if you like, you can do it following my examples above. Well, here's the thing, because of all of the deception, the fake accounts (including the one above this section, pretending to be someone else), you're pretty much Ban-on-sight. Now, that having been said, if the article can be sourced to many sources such as these that are unrelated to you (no blogs, no youtube, no personal web pages, no weebly/blogspot/wix/yola/about/itunes/etc), then the answer is: Maybe. The Maybe depends on you losing the ban-on-sight status first. To do that, log into your original Dao2K account, and request unblocking. The considering admin will want to see proof of reform though, such as 6 months or more of valid contributions and constructive editing on a site like Simple Wiki, and definitely no socking. (And you need to stop trying to re-create articles that have been repeatedly deleted!) If that fails, you can appeal via WP:UTRS, especially if your talk page access is shut off. @Henry Newman: If you need to work on it, I suggest using Draft Space for that, i.e. Draft:Fashion DASH 3, where you can work on it with no deadline and no immediate requirements. If it goes in article space, it is expected to have a minimum level of completeness, which this one doesn't have. @Luzilla Knapp: Hello. You are correct about Wikipedia being strict on Copyright issues, it is a legal concern that is taken very seriously. The message above the edit box states this quite clearly: Content that violates any copyrights will be deleted.
If you are the copyright holder, we do need to do some extra verification before we can let that content remain. Because of the license Wikipedia publishes under, we need some more things done before before we can accept this text. As I've explained many many many times: Because of all you past behavior, which was all YT related of course, you've become "delete on sight" on enwiki. That means any edits you make can be deleted as they are seen, regardless of where they are or how helpful they may be. As this banner states very well, "the community has decided that the broader problems with a banned user's participation outweigh the benefits of their editing, and their edits may be reverted without any further reason." The only way to undo this is to be unbanned, which is not going to happen here any time soon. I suggest focusing your efforts on Simple Wiki, and develop articles there, and perhaps in a year or so you can apply to be unbanned here if you can show a long pattern of helpful edits there with no further sockpuppeting or even logged-out editing here. Baz Persaud etc.[edit]

I notice you helped with sorting out Baz Persaud. FWIW I did a search and noticed that Baz Persaud Inc was mentioned in another article, although it wasn't linked from it:

that the history of that article shows the same editing pattern as with Baz Persaud, there was creation in sandbox (in this case the User:Spawedspanner account did it), and then the article was created in an unusual way, it was created with a page move using an existing article (John William Goff); I wondered if they were trying to avoid new page patrols or something, or maybe they just didn't know how to create new articles properly; but it's clearly the same person and either way it's certain that it was created via a single purpose sockpuppet, and quite possibly a paid writer, although superficially good, the references don't meet Wikipedia's standards in any way- they're invalid.GliderMaven (talk) 02:14, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I did notice that creation pattern on the Baz articles - both were created the same way. That it was used to create a previous one now has me keeping my eyes open. I often see weird patterns and wonder if there is a "here's how to sneak a WP article in" type of forums somewhere. A SPI may be useful if this pattern repeats. Actually, there's another article William Lerner, which has survived an AFD with no consensus. The pattern of creation was slightly different to the William S. Lerner article. I had a quick google and checked the references, and from what I can tell, it might be a valid article, it has a different, overlapping set of references and claims. I think it's probably all right to leave that one. One way or another, two articles were created by mistake. @Fairplain: Actually, uploading copyrighted materials is not generally permitted to anyone. Wikipedia basically gives itself away for free, so all of the content must be similarly free. Copyrighted stuff is only allowed under very specific circumstances, which you can read about at WP:NFCC. Copyright is a tricky area, so at first it is probably best not to upload anything unless you made it yourself. Feel free to ask me any questions, either here or wherever. If not here, you can "ping" me, like I did to you, which sets off that red Message flag so I see that you're talking to me somewhere. You do that by typing {{ping|Crow}}. Even in that case, we usually only link/redirect song lyrics if the song is widely known by that string as its name (Teenage Wasteland) otherwise we would quickly fill up with everyone's pet lyric. But even granting this one, as others have said, making a RD for every conceivable spelling, mis-spelling, and mis-pronunciation of someone's name seems excessive. @UKComedyWikis: Hi, sorry for the delay in responding! The other 2 articles, as you by now know, are not in immediate danger of deletion now that they have at least one source. As it stands though, there's very little substance to them, so the best thing you can do now is to expand all 3 of them with as much source-able information as you can. The more you can show they are being discussed in other places (magazines, tv, radio, newspapers, and the like) and the more information you can add about them, the less likely someone will be to nominate them for deletion. Excuse me sir but I don't think it is copyright if you try to write the story as close to what really happened as possible. I can't write a text that doesn't look anything like my sources, cause the sources need to come together on the page your making. That's why you use them. If that's the logic, every page is copyrighted. "Oh no! One sentence looks to much like one of your sources, better delete your page for trying to tell the truth on your page you created about an event that someone would like to know about, but now he/she will never find it.". If thats the logic then you better delete wikipedia itself because that is one rule you take to far, I mean come on, there's always a sentence people take from their sources and reform it a little bit. If one of your sources would say: "JFK was a Democratic Politician, who became the 35th president of the United States in 1960.". <-- How can you say that in a different way. @Indylover2010: The problem with the article, and the difference between your JFK example, is that you are using the source's words and creative presentation. Yes there are few other ways to say "JFK was a Democratic politician..." but your text essentially copied the feldgrau.net text. Subsequent revising to change around a couple of words and delete others is a start, but it is still using the forum's "creative aspects of presentation", as well as being closely paraphrased which is another problem. I know it is frustrating and seemingly inconsistent, but it is a legal liability that we don't have much leeway with.
I would suggest re-writing (on the page I linked... the tag has to stay until fully evaluated) and just start with the raw facts on the battle. Once they're down, then flesh them out with the various supporting concepts in your own words. Taking that approach will convey the story without using someone else's creative presentation (far better than starting by pasting in their text and then tweaking it to be different). Thanks! @Hafspajen: It looks like a close paraphrase of the breed standard, as seen at this. I'm not sure to what extent the matched text is considered creative as opposed to basic and factual. (I know Justlettersandnumbers works a lot in horse pages, with similar descriptions, so he may have a better opinion than mine on that). As far as remove vs. rewrite, it is always better to re-write infringing text, of course, so we keep the information. But removing it completely is also ok, as it is better to have copyright violations removed than allowed to linger in the hopes someone will rewrite it. I don't think there's any doubt that the Best-known-for IP was right to remove that content, added in a lump with this edit on 9 December 2010. On removal/rewriting, my take is this: copyvio must be completely removed; if after that there's then the time and the will to rewrite some non-infringing text, then so much the better. What's not OK is copy-editing the bad text in the hope that it will magically turn good; it won't. Crow, what do you feel about revdeletion here? – my inclination is to go for it. @Biowritter07: Well for starters you don't do that by changing the text on an existing article. That said, do you have sources to demonstrate the notability of Phora? Things like news, magazines, tv or radio appearances, etc? Other things like youtube, instagram, itunes, facebook, twitter, and the like are not the kind of sources needed. If so, the next step would be to click on WP:WIZ and follow the steps there to start a draft article. Removing Speedy Deletion[edit]

Crow can you answer this question real quick? This morning, I tagged a new article called 1823 in Singapore for speedy deletion, under the WP:A1 deletion category. However, a little over one hour since it was tagged as speedy deletion, you later removed the speedy deletion template (at 17:20, UTC). @Redolta: Hi, glad to explain. A1 means "no context", which further means "I can't tell what this is supposed to be about at all". I saw it go by on NPP too and had a look. From just what was there, I could immediately tell that it was a very small article about events in Singapore in 1823. That right there means that A1 does not apply. That's the basic test for A1: do you know what the author is trying to write about, even if it is poorly written (or even totally made up or a complete hoax for that matter)? If you can tell what it is supposed to be about, then A1 is out. There could still be other deletion criteria that fit, of course. In this case, none did, and upon checking I found many similar articles about other years in Singapore, so I expanded this one to be similar to them.

As far as what to do in the future for very short articles like this, the best advice I can give is: don't look for reasons to delete it, but look for ways to keep it and expand it. If it unquestionably meets a CSD criteria, then it should be tagged of course, but if there's even the hint of doubt, then better to break out Google and see how you can help expand it. In this case, I know very little of Singapore's history, but I could help out by adding headers and categories to make it similar to the other articles covered by List of years in Singapore. @Joswp: Hi and thanks for the note. The edits I made were to remove entries from the list that do not have a WP article. As Wikipedia is not a directory, lists of this particular type tend to only contain entries that have articles. This is to keep the list from becoming a vehicle for promotion of any product that might fit the list. I must point out that your addition is one of the type that I removed, as no article exists for it. It seems that other editors on that page agree that your entry is not appropriate for that list.
Also, please do not call those editors' actions "vandalism" - any edit made in good faith is not vandalism. You may disagree with them, but neither your addition nor their removal is "vandalism". The best thing for both sides is to discuss this on the talk page of the article. Continuously reverting each other is only going to get the page locked (at best) or one/both of you blocked (at worst).
Lastly, if you have a connection to the subject (and I'm not asking you to confirm this), then our Conflict of Interest guidelines suggest very strongly that you should not be editing pages related to your product. Conversely, our policy on paid editing states that if you receive money as a result of editing here, be it a paycheck from the company or a contractor/consultant fee, you are required to disclose your affiliation (see that link for the specifics).

Hi, the issue is that this user and a couple of his friends are actually removing content from all over wikipedia. He holds a grudge against OPNsense. The OPNsense page got removed, and perhaps at the time the project was just not mature enough, however now there is no way to get a page online as a small group of people (mainly that one user) is actively battling anyone interrested... for lack of a better word.

As you can see on my talk page I am a contributor to OPNsense but I can't imagine that my love for the project does not allow me to create pages or undo his vandalism.. if so how would wikipedia work? I mean aren't we all interrested in one or another subject, worth writing about?

I have formally warned the user on his talk page several times, and as you can see he did remove the project again. I am sure OPNsense is a FreeBSD based opens source firewall project, it should be on the list...and there should be apage about the subject. Perhaps you would be so kind to investigate his actions and help out to solve this... otherwise users of wikipedia won't be able to see the full list.

I am willing to write a new acrticle for review if that would help. The original author of the latest OPNsense page backed out because of the negative attitude.

Anyway, I know I am asking a lot... but would you be so kind to help out so we can get a ligitimate page back up? Cause if anyone involved with OPNsense can't do it, nobody can as its a community project just as wikipedia so everyone is involved.

@Joswp: I will be glad to assist, but I need you to agree to do a couple of things first:

You have to stop labeling Mr Hmmm's edits "vandalism". Like many things on Wikipedia, terms like that have very specific uses, and here "Vandalism" means intentionally trying to damage or disrupt the integrity of the encyclopedia. While you disagree with his removals, you must assume that (right or wrong) he believes he is improving the encyclopedia by removing what he sees (rightly or wrongly) as promotional material. I've looked over his edits, and while he is very fastidious about removing OPNsense references, I've not seen him promoting other products.
You also need to stop re-inserting and/or undoing edits to keep OPNsense mentions (for now). I will explain why below, but for now your actions could be seen as disruptive which will only hurt your case for inclusion.

That all said, as I mentioned yesterday, the reason your additions are being removed is mainly due to your article on OPNsense having been deleted as non-notable. (More on "notable" in a moment). Because of that, your additions are seen as re-inserting "non notable" material, which is against our policy on notability, so would always be removed, if not by him, then by potentially any other random patroller. The reason we do this is because, hypothetically, any amateur coder could whip up a product that does X, which would not merit an article of course, so we have to draw the line somewhere.

That somewhere is "Notability", another term that has a very specific definition here. On Wikipedia, "notable" has nothing to do with quality, usefulness, importance, fanbase, or userbase. Here, it simply means "are multiple, reliable, third-party sources that are unrelated to the subject, talking in detail about the topic?" If yes, then we consider it "notable" and an article in one form or another may be appropriate. Now about those qualifiers:

Multiple: Notability usually needs coverage by multiple sources. Things like a syndicated news story, which appears in many newspapers, would still only be one source in this context.
Reliable: The sources used need to be reliable, meaning they have a reputation for fact checking, peer review, editorial oversight, and the like. This exludes many/most blogs, things with user-generated content like IMDB or forums (and even Wikipedia itself!), and most all social media.
Third-party: The sources need to be unrelated and independent from the topic. This excludes press-releases, company web sites, product manuals, and the like. Now, these sources can be used to support claims in the article, but by themselves do not contribute to determining notability.
Talking in detail: The coverage has to be of some depth. Passing mentions, a statement like "Company X uses this product", directory-style listings, event sponsorship mentions, and the like would not qualify. Ideally we want news/magazines/journals devoting significant page space to the subject, but it doesn't have to necessarily be that deep. The less deep the coverage, though, the more independent sources will be needed.

So, the above is what is required to keep an article about OPNsense. If an article can be written that satisfies the notability criteria and is published, then it becomes more reasonable to mention it on those other pages. My question to you then is: without starting a new article just yet, can you show me 2-3 sources that fit those above criteria? If so, please link them here and then we can go into the next phase: how to re-create the article so it is not immediately deleted again. I look forward to your response, and thanks! @Joswp: Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately most of those references do little to establish Notability as Wikipedia requires. I'll break them down:

1. Trivial mention, no analysis or discussion, merely one of hundreds on the list. Would support a claim of "it exists", nothing more.
2. Slightly less trivial mention but still no depth. Would support a claim of "flexible and customizable", but little more.
3. Coverage here is nice and deep, but is not written by an "unrelated" source, so wouldn't count towards notability. It could be used to support some claims, but is essentially a primary source.
4. This is behind a paywall, so I can't evaluate it. What does it say about OPNsense? Any critical analysis of its features, or similar?
5. Weak mention, but may count towards notability if there were numerous others. Insufficient by itself.
6. Trivial mention. "OPNsense uses FreeBSD" is essentially all it says.
7. Weak source. Supports that a FLOSS session focused on it, but given that the guest is a Primary Source, it weakens the independence of the reference.
8. Podcast, generally not a reliable source, though if an entire episode were to feature OPNsense that might count for more.
9. Trivial mention, just a listing.

As for 4. that is an extensive article covering multiple distributions and covering 6 pages in total. The article covers Security, Features, Easy of deployement, Paid Services, Support & Documentation, Extenibility & Maintenance, Management Interface and a final conclusion. Each item is scored for the 5 products reviewed (Sophos, IPfire, OPNsense, pfSense & Untange in order of their choice/score).

If I understand it correctly then 3 and 4 should qualify.. I guess you think the author of 3. is the same as the contributor to OPNsense (me).. but you can see that is not the case.. totally different person and no relation to OPNsense whatsoever.

Or is there another reason why its not "unrelated" ? ( My appology if there is and kudo's for explaining it anyway :-) )

@Joswp: Hello and yes, I got my numbers mixed a bit. 3 Looks good as one source. 4 may be as well, depending on what claims it is supporting. Certainly being picked 3rd of 5 in that publication's "bake-off" would help. Those 2 are probably enough to start a small draft. Draft articles let you work on them without fear of summary deletion, as long as you keep working on them. (After 6 months without edits, they get deleted). Draft Space is not crawled by search engines, and generally nothing links in to there, so it truly is an incubator for articles.

So, I'd say start a small article at Draft:OPNsense. No more than 3 or 4 sentences. Just say what it is, what it does, and maybe a sentence or 2 about statements made in sources 3-4. Important: Since the original article was deleted, if the draft is "substantially identical" it can be re-deleted, even from draft space, so be sure to genuinely start from scratch. The more sources of the depth that 3 and 4 have would be helpful too. I don't know what it takes in the industry to get eyes on a product, but if you are affiliated with the product, making outreaches in that area can only help. Lastly, one concern: you don't have to disclose your identity, but if you are "paid by Deciso", you do need to declare that fact on the talk page of the draft. Thanks! If you keep collecting reliable references, that would be the next step. If you want to add more to the article, just make sure to keep it very factual and non-promotional. (No superlatives like "best", "world class", or the like. Keep the prose very "dry" for now). I would also not recommend adding a Features section yet. There will be a time for that but we're working on establishing notability at this point, and can go into all the features and how-to's once that is done. And lastly, let's now move the discussion to that draft's talk page now that it exists. That way other users who might have input can see all discussion in a central location. Thanks for the work! @The United States of America is the best: Sorry, user error (mine). It puts an "archive" link right next to the link where one would click to see the actual talk page archives. Click the right one and you get the archive page, click the wrong one and, well, you get what happened here. I've since disabled it. Hopefully I left everything where it was supposed to be.
