Irish Guards[edit]

Hi - Please don't add unsourced material to wikipedia. Please read WP:V, WP:CITE and WP:RS. If you repeatedly add unsourced material you may be blocked from editing. Dormskirk (talk) 16:17, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Irish Guards[edit]

Hi. I don't believe I have breached any policy. I am the Media Officer for the Irish Guards and would appreciate it if you could please allow me to update the page and correct various mistakes which I have spotted. Please can you advise me on how to change the capstar picture at the top for the correct one? What is your connection to the Irish Guards?

talk) 1748, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi - If you are a media officer for the regiment you have a conflict of interest and should not have edited the article in the first place. Please read our policy on conflicts of interest (COI). I am afraid you have also breached WP:V, WP:CITE and WP:RS all of which required edits to be properly cited by independent sources. I have no connection with the Irish Guards and edit a wide range of articles. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 17:58, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Irish Guards[edit]

Right, I see. In that case I won't do any further editing. As it stands the information on there is all purely factual, objective and impartial. Some of the information was incorrect and I couldn't allow that to remain the case. As a non-Irish Guard, and if I am to do no further editing, can I please ask you to change the picture of the capstar to the correct one (see Irish Guards on the Army website. The gold band running around the disk is not supposed to be frilled). Thanks

talk) 1806, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

OK. I will tidy up some of the editing. I have added an image of a much older capstar. I don't think we have anything else. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 18:14, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. Thank you for doing that. Are you able to use the capstar on the official Army website?

Done. Dormskirk (talk) 14:24, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have a couple of other things that need updating and would be grateful if you could please execute:

1) add sub heading about recruitment with info on where we recruit from. This has been removed. It doesnt need to be advertising or promotion; it is purely factual information about our recruiting. Being an Irish regiment, this is highly pertinent.

This would need to be independently sourced - not from the army website - and could not be prominent. If you are aware of an independent source that meets the requirements of WP:RS please advise. Dormskirk (talk) 14:24, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

2) Alliances and Affiliations - add ‘Royal Montserrat Defence Force’ - add the 13 DBLE and relevant info which is currently under ‘Traditions and affiliations’ - remove ‘4RAR’ - Add HMS Portland

I have removed '4RAR'. New material would need independent sources. Dormskirk (talk) 14:24, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

3) Current Role and Organisation. Please change back to the breakdown and description of each company as I did it. Furthermore, we use ‘Number 1/2/3/4 Company’ not ‘No.1/2/3/4 Company’

Again, new material would need independent sources. Dormskirk (talk) 14:24, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Please move all info on our links to the Parachute Regiment under a new subheading called ‘Ties with the Parachute Regiment’

I have moved under "alliances" rather than have another new heading. Dormskirk (talk) 14:24, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

4) Uniform. Please correct typos: ‘Prince, William, Duke of Cambridge, who is Colonel of the Irish Guards, wore the uniform of the Irish Guards for his marriage to the Duchess of Cambridge.[49]’

Sorted. Dormskirk (talk) 14:24, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

5) History of the Irish Guards page - please ensure naming conventions and nuances are correct like they now are on the main page - for example: ‘1st Battalion Irish Guards’, not ‘1st Irish Guards’ etc; ‘Irish Guards’ not ‘The Irish Guards’; ‘the Regiment’ not ‘the regiment’; ‘the Battalion’ not ‘the battalion’ when referring to a specific Battalion etc.

Wikipedia has its own conventions. It should be 'regiment' not 'Regiment' and 'battalion' not 'Battalion' (except when referring to the name of a regiment e.g. The Middlesex Regiment). Dormskirk (talk) 14:24, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

5) Notable Members. Im just waiting for our Regimental Adjutant to confirm all the Luxembourg names we’ve had and I will update you as soon as I can.

Again, the entries need to be notable and independently sourced. Dormskirk (talk) 14:24, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much and best wishes

Cosbyahdes (talk) 12:52, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

1) This wasn’t from the Army website in the first place.

2) I cant find an article or source but I am telling you as someone who knows that this is fact.

3) and (5). I understand wikipedia has its own conventions, but ‘regiment’ as opposed to ‘Regiment’ in the context I have explained is incorrect. If you want any credibility than you’ll make the changes. I am an Irish Guards and I am telling you what is factually correct and what is not. Please, give yourself and the Irish Guards credibility by correcting what is wrong.

Thank you Cosbyahdes (talk) 18:39, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

1) I have restored some material from the Irish Statute Book which might have been what you referring to.

2) You may believe it is a fact but per WP:BURDEN "the burden to demonstrate verifiability lies with the editor who adds or restores material".

3) and 5) Please can I refer you to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (capitalization). It states "Do not capitalize the second or subsequent words in an article title, unless the title is a proper name." In this case "regiment" is not being used as a proper name.

I am not sure what has gone wrong here - we are all volunteers here - and I have spent some time today trying to help you with improvements to the article. I am sorry that you do not feel that I have any credibility and would refer you to Wikipedia:No personal attacks. Thank you. Dormskirk (talk) 19:47, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I didn’t mean to offend you. I’m very grateful for the help you have given us where possible, particularly on a volunteer basis. I’m simply a proud Irish Guard wanting to see that our customs and facts are correct and accurate.

1) thank you

Appreciated. Dormskirk (talk) 16:07, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

2) I will continue looking for reference sources

Great. Dormskirk (talk) 16:07, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

3 and 5) I understand that this policy but as you’d agree the British Army is famously full of extraordinary and unexplainable nuances and nonsensical rules; all of which make the Army what it is and nowhere does this apply more than in the Household Division. If we are to do our jobs properly and inform our readers correctly then please can we think about how we ask wikipedia for special exemption in this part of their policy.

I have been giving this further thought and taking a look at MOS:MILTERMS. This may give further guidance: it is not the first time this issue has been raised! Dormskirk (talk) 16:07, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

6) Please could you update Notable members to include all our former royals: • HRH Prince Sébastien H M G of Luxembourg, Prince of Nassau, 2017-18 • HRH Prince Wenceslas of Nassau, 2012-13 • HI&RH Archduke Alexander of Austria, 2012-13 • HRH The Grand Duke of Luxembourg, 1942-47 • HSH Prince J E Liechtenstein, 2009-10

Sorry to be a pain, but in this section we would normally list people who already have wikipedia articles in their own right (this would evidence notability) and also have distinguished military service. The Grand Duke of Luxemberg clearly meets this criteria but do any of the others? Dormskirk (talk) 16:07, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Please correct another notable member: General Sir Mark Carleton-Smith KCB, CBE, ADC Gen, Chief of the General Staff (June 2018 - current)

Amended. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 16:07, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again
