your comment of "civility" on my page

Lol he started it. So yes it was necessary. I do treat others with respect on Wikipedia.

Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador

I don't know if I would call this conflict of interest. It is always good to be careful about mentioning one's self in an article, because articles are supposed to be written from a neutral point of view. You may wish to look at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest for a bit of background. Note that normally one does not place one's signature in the article. I think that someone has already mentioned this on User talk:JAKoulouris.

Although your issue in this case seems to be with one specific user, it is a good idea to think in terms of what is best for the content of the article. I agree with you that the external links, although from different sources, all appear to have the same content. Having multiple redundant links to the same information does not add any value to the article. The Wikipedia guideline on external links Wikipedia:External links suggests that external links should normally not be used in the body of an article and should be kept to a minimum. In this case, it may be more appropriate to include a single reference to support the added content instead of links to every article on the subject.

Edit wars are not a good way to go. There are some suggestions at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution for dealing with differences of opinion. You may consider adding a note to the talk page for this article at this point. You may also consider adding a note to the talk page for the user explaining what you are doing and why; it is better to present your concerns in terms of Wikipedia policies and guidelines so that it doesn't come across as just your own opinion.

I hope this helps. --Big_iron (talk) 10:16, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Actually, the Infobox has changed with respect to hockey players. We no longer list nationality and only list national teams as per the discussion here [1]. All hockey players with international experience are now receiving this line on their infobox, as per the consensus. Shootmaster 44 (talk) 05:06, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

No worries, I hadn't noticed many of the others I had changed have this happen, other than Joe Sakic. The rest I had edited are the LA Kings roster and a few of their property. It will take some time to edit these to bring them all up to standards. If there are pages you are watching, like Wendel Clark, feel free to add this in. The only condition of the "ntl_team = " field is that the player must have appeared in an IIHF sanctioned tournament (essentially the Men's U-18, World Juniors, Olympics, Canada/World Cup or the World Championship and Women's Olympics, World Championships and U-22). It would be a big help to slowly fix this. The biggest task will be to add these to players not currently in the NHL (retired, Europe, etc.). Shootmaster 44 (talk) 05:19, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

New Brunswick postal links

Good day
I put several of these external links (only in some Restigouche County communities) before realizing that it was unnecessary.
If you find any others before I get back to them, feel free to edit them out. Thanks. Gordalmighty (talk) 23:28, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

Official social networking sites in external links

Yeah, it seems like many people misunderstand the WP:EL policy on links to official sites that are social networking sites. Bascially, someone's official Twitter account is like their official blog hosted at Blogspot. The point is that it is that person's words posted to a location controled by them. --Pmsyyz (talk) 22:02, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

Glad someone's paying attention...

Thanks. --Ckatzchatspy 02:44, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

References

There are a variety of Category:Citation templates that can be used to format a reference if you wish, but they're not mandatory. When it comes to punctuation, there aren't any hard and fast rules for that either, except for the fact that there should be a period at the end; I tend to use the format

but that's not a requirement as such. The individual journalist's name can be added before the title, where appropriate and available, but that's really only critical when you're citing an opinion piece rather than a news article (and some news organizations don't usually provide the name of the individual journalist anyway.)

The main reason I changed the publisher's name from "CBC New Brunswick" to "CBC News" is that we have an article at the latter title that can be linked to, whereas we don't have anything at the title CBC New Brunswick (and if we did, it would most likely be a disambiguation page listing CBAT-TV, CBAM-FM, CBD-FM and the Radio 2 rebroadcasters.) Even wikilinking the news organization isn't strictly mandatory, though, but it is a good idea if we have an article on them — I have, believe it or not, occasionally seen people challenge whether the CBC was a reliable source on the basis that they weren't personally familiar with it, so wikilinking CBC News is a relatively simple way to demonstrate that we have an article on it and thus it is a notable and reliable source.

I do like to use the CBC as my first go-to source, whenever possible, for the same reason as you: most of their links stay up permanently, and stay free permanently. I have come across a few dead CBC links from time to time, though — I believe usually they're older articles sitting on the wrong side of a change in the CBC's URL-formatting structure, but with a bit of hunting we can usually find them again if we have the title. (Conversely, I especially hate using the former Osprey Media newspapers, because their current web format has an especially frustrating habit of using "Posted X days ago" instead of listing the actual publication date of the article. But I digress.)

Although we obviously like to provide a weblink whenever possible, it's not mandatory that the source be available on the web — so you're quite right that a bare URL becomes a useless reference if the link itself dies, whereas if the other information is present we can do a web search to see if the URL just changed, or we can strip the link and leave the rest of the information intact if the web version isn't retrievable. So you're absolutely right that if you come across an article that's using bare URLs, you should reformat it to include the article title, publication name and date if possible. But you can also tag the article with {{bare links}} if, for whatever reason, you can't or don't want to deal with it yourself.

Hope that all helps a bit. Feel free to let me know if you have any more questions, obviously. Bearcat (talk) 03:19, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

Aside: if you have a bare URL reference, you can always check the Wayback Machine to see if an archival copy has been made (try it here). Note that the site is heavily trafficked and quite slow at times. Unfortunately, the link to this story at The Chronicle Herald found at Neil LeBlanc has no matches in the archive. Darrell Dexter

I've removed your vandalism from this article. Please grow up and stop making unconstructive edits to this and other article. Continue and I will revert all your vandalism. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Notgonahappendude (talkcontribs) 01:03, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Cmr08, I'm not sure what you did to upset this guy, but this account, and at least one other sock, has been POINTedly reverting changes made by you. Does it all stem from the Darrell Dexter article? —C.Fred (talk) 01:42, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
  • In reply to your comment at Talk:Darrell Dexter: I apologize for implying that you were involved in any edit warring. I revisited the edit history and, although you made multiple edits, they were contiguous (i.e., no reverts). The tone (and, frankly, the username) of Notgonahappendude (talk · contribs) implied that there was a longer-term conflict going on. So when an IP came back to re-add the content, my point then was that it should be taken to the talk page—and I wanted to invite both sides to the table. Your comment on my talk page was exactly what I think needed to be said on the article's talk page (if you could be so kind as to copy it there, I would appreciate it).
In retrospect, I should have invoked WP:BRD: a bold change was made, and it was reverted, so the next step is to discuss the matter.
Again, I'm sorry if my talk page message was misconstrued, and thank you for your willingness to discuss the situation so civilly. —C.Fred (talk) 08:11, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
It was very clear that the edits he was reverting of yours were constructive edits. Hence my comment about him reverting to make a point. Anyway, the upshot is that I've got the Darrell Dexter article on my watchlist, to see if any other shenanigans erupt there. Let me know if anybody else starts mass-reverting you, and I'll be glad to look into that also. —C.Fred (talk) 05:44, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Succession boxes

There isn't actually an explicit policy forbidding the presence of both an infobox and a succession box, but there's a guideline at WP:TCREEP that strongly recommends not overloading an article with templates that simply repeat the same information as each other. Generally, succession boxes are an older way of providing the information and the succession section of the infobox was meant to replace it. So yeah, if you come across an article that has both, it's acceptable to remove the footer template — but it's not actually mandatory so much as just preferred. Bearcat (talk) 17:37, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, you're right. I thought that McNeil said something connecting the two. Apparently I should read the article twice before writing and referencing next time. Sethpt (talk) 02:51, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

Margaret Bridgman

You acted exactly right. That read like the kind of thing that someone might publish in a magazine or newspaper tribute (like, say, The Globe and Mail's "Lives Lived" column, not an encyclopedia article. A whole lot of personal information and anecdotes that we can't include here without sources; my guess would be that the user is most likely a family member or close family friend of hers. It does get really frustrating and discouraging sometimes how many politicians (or their supporters or campaign staff) seem so determined to turn their Wikipedia articles into campaign brochures — but thanks for keeping an eye on this. Bearcat (talk) 16:47, 15 March 2010 (UTC)

If you're inclined to take the time to clean the article up by taking the time to hunt down legitimate sources, you can do so, but if you're more inclined to just revert back to a more basic version of the article, you can do that, too. There's no hard and fast rule about that; you're allowed to do whatever you want as long as the copyright violation disappears. Bearcat (talk) 05:04, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Re: Woogee

Howdy! PLEASE don't misinterpret this as an insult or sarcasm, but are you sure we're looking at the same edits? The edits I saw from the IP involved forcibly inserting "Mr." into the article, against the manual of style so far as I know. It's bad form, but that isn't vandalism, in of itself - it's just poor editing. Correcting poor editing doesn't excuse edit warring. After all, almost any edit is poor in at least one person's eyes, and if we were allowed to all just spin the wheel back and forth over it indefinitely, nothing would ever get done. The IP was blocked (for a good 24 hours longer than Woogee) for edit warring. I'm not saying the edits this IP user made were right, I'm not excusing their past behavior, and I'm not saying Woogee has done anything majorly wrong. The overall principle is just that, unless the behavior being undone is obvious and authentic vandalism, defined as behavior that is deliberately destructive/disruptive to the project, edit warring just sparks an endless, pointless, and very spammy cycle. Anyhow, there's nothing wrong with sticking up for somebody in a polite way like you're doing, and I respect that. However, whether or not he was in the right, Woogee was, by the three revert rule, edit warring. The block will remain in place in the interest of keeping the peace. However, this isn't at all a "ban". It's a twelve hour automatic block that will instantly lift when the time involved has elapsed. Anyway, repeated totally unexplained removal of content, like you described happening to you (and I'm sorry to hear that), IS vandalism, and undoing that is something I wouldn't block anyone for, but the four reversions, which I linked on Woogee's talk page, are not of that. Rather than edit warring, if someone is repeatedly vandalizing a page, it's best to just let it be, report it at WP:AIV, and clean it up after blocking goes down (assuming it does). Or if the edits are bad and they can't be negotiated with, try the WP:Dispute resolution process (which I can understand is incredibly frustrating, believe me, so I understand the temptation to just revert). Anyway, Woogee will be able to edit again by earlyish tomorrow, and hopefully things can proceed smoothly from here. If you have any other concerns, any questions, or if I've done a cruddy job of explaining my position, please feel free to ask drop me a line again. Oh, just by the way, "blocking" and "banning" aren't the same. A "block" prohibits a specific IP or user from editing for a set period of time or indefinitely. A ban bars a specific user from EVER participating in the wiki again via any account unless the ban is lifted. Woogee is blocked, but definitely not banned. - Vianello (Talk) 03:30, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

All righty. Well, I get where you're coming from, and I know you wanna speak out for somebody who was helping out. I certainly have no problem with what Woogee was doing, but he wasn't doing it in the most productive way. The four linked edits were a content dispute over whether the word "Mr." should be included. That isn't worth edit warring over. Few things are, really. - Vianello (Talk) 04:57, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
Excuse me butting in here, but according to policy, blocking is to prevent - not to punish. There is, ASFAIK, no rule that stipulates that sysops must block for infringements to a 3r rule. IHMO, there often are better ways of intervening when normal, consciensous editors are involved.--Kudpung (talk) 05:59, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

External links

You're right, every one of those links is inappropriate in an individual location's article; some are WP:SPAM, others are just not town-specific enough to be useful. In the vast majority of cases, an EL section should only include the one or two (or three, if absolutely necessary) most immediately relevant primary links for the topic — a town or city's article will rarely warrant anything more than the town's or city's own official website, because EL isn't meant to become a comprehensive web directory. You can also read WP:ELNO if you need further clarification. Bearcat (talk) 22:48, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Just so you know, there are also going to sometimes be cases where a link that's been added to EL is inappropriate there, but can be validly moved up into the article body as a reference citation — for example, a link to a specific newspaper article about something that happened in the town might be appropriate as a reference if the article contains content about that event. That doesn't apply to any of these links, however — but keep in mind that you may sometimes come across other links which are legitimate references. Bearcat (talk) 23:27, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
You're right, webcam and weather links also generally shouldn't be listed as external links. Bearcat (talk) 03:21, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Initials in names

Well it's quite easy to point out where you are wrong. The correct Wikipedia rule that governs this rule of style is WP:INITIAL. That's why his post-nominal stays and should not be excluded. As for your second edit, you will find in most FA articles, which is the test of a well written article on Wikipedia, that it is quite common to see, at some point, the use of the person's first and last name together in other parts of the article, not just in the intro paragraph. The operative word in the WP:SURNAME rule is should, not must, therefore it does not fully rule-out the use of first and last name in the article, after the initial usage.--Abebenjoe (talk) 23:23, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Actually, proper encyclopedic writing style is last-name only after initial usage except where that might be confusing. For example, if a particular paragraph is or might be ambiguous as to whether the surname "Obama" on its own means Barack or Michelle, then it may be necessary to use the first names to keep them straight — but in proper encyclopedic writing, it's always surname-only except where ambiguity might be an issue. Bearcat (talk) 17:03, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

There's been a lot of back and forth over postnominal initials, but the general consensus — which, for the record, I disagree with as I think they're mostly pointless, but consensus rules in the end — is that they're okay in the introduction and the infobox, but not in the title. Generally my compromise is that I won't remove them if they're present, but I won't add them to an article that they're not already in, either. Don't worry about having "made a mistake", though — it really isn't a big deal. If somebody really wants them there in an article that you've removed them from, then that editor can just put them back themselves. Bearcat (talk) 17:03, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks

for catching that! I had removed it from a bizarre location within a section, and didn't even check to see that it was already in the external links. The real question is what was someone thinking to have placed it atop the section in the first place? Again, thanks for the sharp eye. HuskyHuskie (talk) 03:08, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Re: Ted Brill Award

Good catch! The text of Ted Brill Award does appear to be a copyright infringement. Because it's been there since April, I didn't delete it outright; instead, I put the {{copyvio}} tag at the top of the article. Wikipedia does take copyrights seriously, so this was hardly a minor thing, nor was leaving me a message a bother.

Any other such articles you find in the future, feel free to tag them with {{copyvio}} or, if the pages are newly created and clear copyright infringements, {{db-copyvio}}.

Again, thanks for spotting this, and happy editing! —C.Fred (talk) 22:44, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Georgetown, Texas

Thanks for the edits. I'm not very good at this yet but have more or less adopted Georgetown TX and Round Rock TX as pages to fill out. Both lack references, are missing entire sections, and in general need a lot of work. All help is most welcome and appreciated. AustexTalk 03:13, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the info on WP:EL. I look forward to reading it. These were not my external link adds but I have removed some of them just now anyway. 99% of my edits are in-line refences, and I probably overdo that from time to time. When you have a moment would you glance over both Georgetown, Texas and Round Rock, Texas and pass on any thoughts? I've been working on both quite a bit (see edit history of each page) since no one else is. Lots of filling-in sections, adding needed new sections, edits, adding references, re-organization and adding images to both articles. Thanks. AustexTalk 23:31, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Round Rock

Saw your last two edits on Round Rock and you are entirely correct. Thanks for keeping things straight. On Dell I had edited it a couple of times and apparently so had another editor (Iluvrr) so it got a bit out of hand, a lot of overlappping, and needed a re-write. FYI this weekend I am tring to go through the entire article if possible and pick up the remaining typos, grammar, and rewrites to tighten things up a bit. I also asked the Dir of the Round Rock Library to review the article for me on Friday and she had a number of small yet important suggested edits and facts and sources for me to consider. Thanks for your cleanup on this article from time to time. Yes Dell is kind of a big deal (16,000 empployees) but it just needs only one concise subsection. AustexTalk 02:05, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the continuing help. I forget to check for your comments in the View History log. I honestly don't recall seeing any previous message from you re 1990s versus 1990's. But either way I see this one now. So many rules....but I'm trying hard. I'll also look up the school opening date. I'm sure I can find it. --Don AustexTalk 17:22, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
Oops just found where you had indeed pointed out the 1990s versus 1990's. Sorry. AustexTalk 01:53, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
Whew! Took a lot of searching. ACC opens August 23rd this year. A&M center opened December 9, 2009. Added new citations. Thanks for pushing for correctness and more specificity. AustexTalk 17:57, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Near completion of Round Rock article?

I think I am about "wore out" on the Round Rock page. And it feels to me like it is essentially completed...through all the trials and tribulations and patience you have had with it and with me. As Austin Powers would say "I'm spent."

By my count I have made approximately 264 article edits starting July 3rd and up to today, by coincidence, August 3rd. (I also made about a million or more typos too, but hopefully have corrected them all) One other editor made more than one or two edits, and that was User:Iluvrr who made 17 total edits - all at one sitting apparently. That is, not counting your helpful corrections and help with rules.

The article is more than three to four times as long as it was when I started, and many, many new sections have been added. I added and wrote 99% (if not 100%) of the following newly added sections:

  • Prehistoric Round Rock
  • Cotton
  • Cisholm Trail statues
  • Old Settlers Association
  • Economic Impact of Interstate 35
  • Life as a bedroom communty
  • City government
  • County government
  • State and national representation
  • Dell Corporate Headquarters (maybe only 75%) as some was copied from the Dell page.
  • Commercial and retail
  • Health care (a long section)
  • Toll Roads
  • Public education
  • Higher education
  • and all but one of the Notables (Jihad Jane) which I would personally remove
  • and 3/4th of Movies

I also uploaded 14 of the 16 images (several of them my personal images).

Whew! So where do we go next? I've had the director of the RR Library do a quick fact check and made a few edits from that. I feel very comnfortable that the facts are all correct. And that we have citations for the vast majority of items. Could use a few more no doubt, but isn't that always the case.

I'd like your close reivew and suggestions for changes, new sections, needed citations, or whatever .. .. .. AND then to see if we are ready to submit for a quality scale rating. I am not even sure how to do that, but I am sure it should not be me making the request. Is there, for example, a peer review process for submitting so that it is not submitted prematurely?

As for me, I need to get back to my job and my family for while. I've kind of gotten addicted and and need to pause awhile. AustexTalk 01:53, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

PS - Next will be Georgetown, Texas. . . after a vacation away from Wikipedia. AustexTalk 01:54, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Battle of the Brians

The usage of the term in 2010 shows that the original 1988 competition is still well remembered in Canadian culture. However, this would not warrant a separate article on its own. The article is pretty short, however this is exactly something it needs. GoldDragon (talk) 16:51, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

Darrell Dexter

Hi. Yes, I noticed the recent activity in the Darrell Dexter article right away and thought it suspicious, as did you. At the very least there may be some NPOV or conflict of interest issues in these edits, possibly even sockpuppetry. I get the impression that someone close to the party may be behind the edits. Hopefully having the last one reverted will end it. Freshfighter9talk 21:27, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

I left User talk:A.Harpell a friendly reminder of a few policies and he promptly deleted them. Not a good sign. Freshfighter9talk 15:19, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

I suspect sockpuppetry. Several brand new accounts popping up at the same time and editing the exact same articles is very rarely a coincidence. I suppose simply keeping an eye on the activity is all that can be done at this point. Freshfighter9talk 20:46, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi Cmr08. I was on Facebook searching for Darrell Dexter to see if he had a page there and all that came up was this wikipedia page on him, which I found had very little info. So far, I have fixed his wife's name which the previous editors had wrong, and added a paragraph on the environmental award he received, which was deemed to be biased. Sockpuppetry is not an issue here - although I posted what I was doing on my own Facebook page, so others may have seen that and been inspired. If any of my posts are offensive to you as a contributor to Wikipedia, please do let me know. I am new to Wikipedia, but will strive to learn the rules and build on various articles about Nova Scotia people, places and history. A.Harpell (talk) 22:48, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

All those new accounts seem to have stopped just as quickly as they began. Perhaps another indication of sockpuppetry.Freshfighter9talk 02:01, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi. I would like to properly write Dexter's wiki entry and see there's some discussion about the proper format. Any issue with me taking this on and using the format discussed on that entry? CameraCameron (talk) 20:16, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

Nackawic, New Brunswick

I haven't read the guidelines in a while, but after reading that section on the pulp mill I'd say that probably 90% of the section could be removed. It definitely looks like completely unsourced original research and there are obvious pov concerns with the editor's writing style. If it was me I'd simply remove a lot of that section, as the mill is not the subject of the article. Freshfighter9talk 21:16, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

Misunderstanding

No, I didn't think that. I re-read your post afterward, and realised that he has not changed his ways. I left my post there as a way of encouraging better behaviour on his part. If he doesn't change his ways, I will start reverting his edits wholesale. That sort of behaviour is disruptive. Ground Zero | t 12:23, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

Andersen’s Split-Pea Soup is actually rather famous (or it was in past decades); the link was not to serve as advertising, but because it deserves a place in the article text itself, if someone would write it up... AnonMoos (talk) 00:13, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Probably not for its own article, but definitely enough to be mentioned in the Buellton article text (see Talk:Buellton, California). I'm not reverting your edit, just saying why the link was there... AnonMoos (talk) 00:37, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Sorry for not being able to clearly articulate my views earlier. However that is what I despise about that anon user 69.159.18.176 , he/she always follows me around and reverts for any perceived wrongdoing, erasing my editing efforts. That anon never actually adds anything constructive or makes any attempts to modify/correct, rather he/she is there just to give me a hard time. MaxForce (talk) 14:47, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

Year and comma

Hi

Can you point me to where MoS says that the year should be followed by a comma

For clarity using this example.

"The events of 1971 led to the introduction..."

thanks Chaosdruid (talk) 17:11, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Please dont think it is a criticism...I have come across this problem lots of times and the MoS' do not explain it. There are discussions in the archives that do not seem to come to a conclusion either lol
I think it is a carry over from the American styles. It seems to me that if MoS says we can write 14 December 2010 without commas then we should not be using the comma with just the year.
When I have more time, probably at the weekend, I will try and search the archives some more for further discussions which may clarify MoS policy :¬)
Often the year is in the middle of a sentence where the second half is supplementary to the first half. For example "He moved to XXX in 1970, which was also where he studied mathematics." - here the second half is incidental to the first half and the comma is to break up the two halves. It often tends to be used in the opening sentences of biogs also "He was born in New York, in 1970, to Italian parents." Here the sentence should really be re-arranged to say "He was born in 1970 in New York, to Italian parents." Often the commas used for place names are also not necessary although MoS says to use them. For me "He was born in 1970 in New York to Italian parents." is fine. It is down to the Chicago writing style that these hang-ons exist.

Hi, I've found that you need to warn them about disruptive edits on the talk page. If after successively more urgent warnings (I put one on his talk page) you can then ask an admin to suspend their editing rights. That usually stops them. If they switch to another user or edit anonymously you can always try to protect the article. You need to go through these preliminary steps in order to show evidence to the admins that you have taken these steps. Time consuming, but they work. Best of luck. You were right, however, to express concern with my wording in the SPI. In the future, I will be more careful. I should have just kept it simple and said, "Cmr08 alerted me" or something similar. Sorry about that. Viriditas (talk) 11:50, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

I did read your response and have deleted some of the information. When I first read it a while ago the information was newly added and it seemed very much like it was possibly her staff that had wrote it. I deleted the information pertaining to the "bashing" of Danny Williams with regards to the rural health care, seeing it was I guess over exaggerated and left out important information. Most of the article is unsourced but I didn't really feel like delting everything that wasn't sourced. Newfoundlander&Labradorian (talk) 04:29, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

Communication

Dear Dear Cmr, I went to ask my dear friend a question and did not mention you by name on purpose because I did not want to hurt your feelings. Apparently I have failed miserably in that quest. I truly value your contributions and count on you to catch my inevitable typos! "What we have here is a failure to communicate!" You are so right about my needing nice people behind me after the abuse of my early wiki-ness. It is a good feeling to know you are are "behind" me in more ways than one  ;-) Again , you have no need to apologize, it is I that am sincerely sorry. It is my own problem that I take critiques personally, even when I know they are not about my work! Since my sister died last year, I am not in a good place.

We are very different people but that is not your problem, it is mine. I hide my pain under wry humor that sometime people don't get and are offended. You are the Last person I wanted to offend! I think that you are probably a serious person in a different way that I am, and that our senses of humor are just different. Please do not leave California articles alone, whatever would I do without you ;-) ?? I never meant for you to see that note to Crohnie but I should know better on Wiki! She is helping me to be more PC in the way I respond to people. I think that if you and I were working in an office together that we would become great friends. We would know each other and what real life (RL) is dealing us, but that is not the way wiki works. Our personal communication is so very limited and all I know about you is what is on your user page. You have chosen to not reveal anything except the award that says you are kind and patient. Well, I already know that! LOL Some of us choose to email and develop real relationships. I am not asking that, I just am asking for you to be patient with me, God isn't finished with me yet! I hold you in high regard, so let's go forward please. I don't know if you saw the note I left somewhere that said we are a really good team. I believe that! I am going to archive your note because this is just our business and nobody elses. So please lets us begins again" Hi , I am Joy, how be you? :-) Namaste..DocOfSocTalk 22:16, 23 March 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the welcome

But seeing I've been a member and contributor for a while longer than you, it gave me a nice little giggle :p I thank you for correcting my overuse of capitals in headers, capitalizing headers is hard habit to break. If you have further suggestions for the page regarding content, be sure to place them in the talk page. I used as model for these additions the very few Canadian cities which have a higher classification on the classification scale, such as Edmonton (which is too large to compare but it's also a capital which is useful) and Coquitlam (which in size is a better comparison, but is not a capital). I have created a section on the talk page regarding global suggestions to improve the article's classification, feel free to add to it. You say I'm making it less readable? would you please clarify this? Cheers--Tallard (talk) 19:44, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

ah I see, it was the template's wording not yours, I should have realised. That makes more sense :) I confess there are aspects of Wikipedia MoS that I know well, but others I seem to forget. I'm not on 12 months a year, so the in-betweens tend to create selective memory! :)
Out of curiosity, did you visit the article following my request on Canada's assessment page or was it just coincidence? I posted there a few days ago but have received no feedback. It's my first time looking into trying to improve the scale of an article, so I don't know what timelines to expect? Thanks for the cudos on the job done, I look forward to helping this article get as far up as I can, given my limited talent at prose. So any suggestions/opinions are welcome. Cheers--Tallard (talk) 04:46, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
Well thanks again. Vandalism is a pretty impacting on this page as we only have a very few real content contributors, and there has been a fair bit of vandalism, relative to our size, which has gone unnoticed for a while as the article gets only a little traffic. Not only here but on several other locally relevant articles. I saw a 'flagullence' survive online for months, ridiculous really! I wish I could put 1-2 articles on 'severe watch' where IP only edits would get sent directly to my regular mail! Til next time :)--Tallard (talk) 07:17, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

This is your only warning; if you remove or blank page contents or templates from Wikipedia again, as you did at CJMO-FM, you may be blocked from editing without further notice. Please stop removing references and content to this and other New Brunswick articles, such as CFQM-FM. Other editors take the time to add sources, to remove them for no reason is a slap-in-the-faceBrunswicker4Life (talk) 20:27, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Your edits to Timmins, Ontario

Not sure I agree with removing things with broad strokes on the Timmins, Ontario page. I know that wikipedia tells us to be bold, but to delete notable people from Timmins simply because they have no wikipedia page seems a bit harsh.

I'm not an expert and have no clue how to reference these things, but here are a few that I at least took some time to look up to find references.

  • Laurie Kreiner, olympic athlete, XIIth Olympic Winter Games, Innsbruck, Austriahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpine_skiing_at_the_1972_Winter_Olympics

I didn't go through all those that were removed, but these are a few that could be referenced.

Trouble citing reference

Schaynu (talk) 10:34, 10 June 2012 (UTC)Hello Cmr08: you recently deleted my expansion of Gerry Ouellette, a Canadian ice hockey player from Grand Falls, N.B. The reason was for not including proper citations. I understand and agree with proper citations. However, I am a new user of Wikipedia and am having trouble fulfilling the requirements to contribute. I tried again today to expand Gerry Ouellette. I tried to include two citations this time, but was unsuccessful. I waded through the Wiki help info to no avail. Can you help me? The two citations I included were: "http://bruinslegends.blogspot.ca/2011/02/gerry-red-ouellette.html" and "http://www.legendsofhockey.net/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=13905." I paraphrased the info contained in these two sites to summarize Gerry Ouellette's hockey career. He is a local hero in Grand Falls, N.B., and deserves to be recognized. Earlier, I also amended the Wiki page on "Grand Falls, N.B." to include two notable persons: Ron Turcotte, a jockey who won the Triple Crown on "Secretariat" in 1973 and Gerry "Red" Ouellette. I included citations for those entries. When I checked this AM, I noted that someone (perhaps yourself - if so thank you) had amended my amendment to hotlink the names to the relevant Wiki pages. So, now Wiki users may know of two more notable persons from Grand Falls, N.B., and also be able to link to more info on them. Unfortunately, the info contained in the link for "Gerry Ouellette" is pretty sparse. That's what I was trying to correct. Again, please be patient with a newbie (albeit a "senior citizen" newbie). If you wish to contact me please do so via e-mail at "schaynu@rogers.com" as I don't think I could navigate a talk page associated to my account. Thank you! Schaynu (talk) 10:34, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

Gerry "Red" Ouellette

Hi Cmr08: Thank you very much for brushing up my expansion of Gerry Ouellette's Wiki page. You certainly know your stuff! The page looks great now and is much easier to navigate with all the hotlinks you provided. Your editing is also appreciated. Just so you know, I understand your comments re: blogs and "local heros." I'm actually fairly new to the Grand Falls area and when I asked around about Annick Gagnon (who was already listed on Wiki) very few people seemed to know who she was. However, "Red" Ouellette and especially Ron Turcotte are extremely well known here. All is well now and if another editor changes things - so be it. Again, many thanks for your able assistance! Re: Henson Trust

Hi Cmr08, I uderstand your concern that the references and links to the Henson Trust page were appeared to be advertisements, and I want to assure you that was not my intention. I'm learning about Henson Trusts and other estate planning tools in school and wanted to improve these pages by adding references. Personally, my family has benefited from Henson Trusts. The reference I added is a good source for people who have children with disabilities as it provides helpful information on estate planning tools such as Henson Trusts. Without those links, the article has no references. I looked at the Welcome Wiki page you suggested and it indicates that edits should be referenced since it adds validity to the page. Would you kindly reconsider your edits? Cheers [[3]] — Preceding unsigned comment added by ShannonAndrea (talkcontribs) 19:39, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Cmr08, Thanks for your response. I understand what the term references mean and I referenced the website because it is where I got the information on Henson Trusts to update the Henson Trust wiki page. I also tried putting the same linke under External links and it was still removed. I understand now that commercial links are not allowed regardless of their usefulness. Also, with regards to making links to other wiki pages, I understood that I was entering them as external links within the document. I tried to follow the instructions for internal wiki links using the, but I was getting errors. For example, to create a wiki link on the ODSP page to the Henson Trust wiki page, I entered the following: Henson Trust , but it didn't show up as a link. I also tried [Trust] and that did not work either. I'd appreciate some asssistance since I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Thanks!

Politics

Just so you know for future reference, we do need to wait until the ballots are finished being counted before we actually add numbers to the electoral results templates — but we're allowed to list the winner's name in the relevant places as soon as a reliable media outlet can be sourced as having made that call. (Although it's true that they do occasionally make the wrong call and have to retract later on, that's easy enough for us to fix and they usually don't anyway.) Hope that helps :-) Bearcat (talk) 07:20, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

Correct name

Like myself, I see you do lots of edits to the notable people sections of Town and city articles. FYI, the correct name per WP:WikiProject_Cities/US_Guideline is Notable people. Not notable persons, notable residents etc. If you change any incorrectly titled sections you come across, some of which might have been done by me before I knew better, it would be a big help. Pipes & redirects

Meh. It's not a big enough deal to lose sleep over. There are a couple of places in the guidelines where it's mentioned as unnecessary, I think once when reading about pipes and once when you're reading about redirects; the only quicklink I can remember is WP:NOTBROKEN, but if you've changed a bunch I don't see any reason to waste your time going back to them. When I revert a few, it's mostly just meant as a gentle hint saying "Hey, you don't really need to run around doing this", but compared to a lot of other edits around here, it's pretty much harmless. John White

Thanks, Cmr08. I completely missed the article. I'm used to seeing any disambiguation done by referring to them as (Ontario politician)'s, and there wasn't a link from the listing of all MPP's elected that election to the John White (Canadian politician) article.

I'll consolidate the information and then have one refer to the other (consolidated) article, unless there is a way to delete superfluous or duplicate articles, in which case, I'd suggest that option.

Thanks, again! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Oafp (talkcontribs) 21:03, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

Politician infoboxes

Your reading was correct, we haven't generally listed the predecessors' and successors' party affiliations in the main infobox in the past. Before infoboxes became the norm, when the only way to list predecessors and successors was a succession footer table at the end of the article, the P/S party affiliations were sometimes noted in that format, depending on the individual preferences of the person who was adding it, but as things became more standardized the consensus became to not do so and then that carried over as the presentation evolved toward the infobox.

Certainly if somebody wanted to initiate a discussion to propose that we start listing that information, they'd be allowed to do so — though I can't imagine any compelling reason why we'd need it, since people can get that information by clicking through to the predecessor's or successor's own separate articles — but in the meantime you are correct in removing it if and when you see it. I think that Hammerthrow should have explained their edits, and I suppose I could block them for edit-warring already. But it's always good to do things that won't have to be redone later :) Absintheparadox (talk) 02:00, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Arthur Danto may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:

Thanks for removing, but

At FreedomPop, thanks for removing the personal observation from the article. I'd like to suggest in future actually moving such text to the Talk page, for discussion which could improve the article. Less bitey. --Lexein (talk) 04:04, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for spotting and reverting the change to Unionville, Ontario!

When the block came off, the semi-protection had to be reinstated. Of course that leaves him free to keep changing the article - Wikipedia seems unable to do anything about him, so it's good to know someone else is watching it also! Thanks again! Jpaulm (talk) 22:27, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

As CambridgeBayWeather says, it seems to be some kind of obsession! BTW Thanks for looking out for the other ones - I haven't even looked at the other ones he has changed (didn't dare, frankly!). Jpaulm (talk) 19:08, 17 November 2013 (UTC)

Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai

Oh my god.... Where did you guys rise from?.... I didn't get angry. And also getting angry is a basic characteristic of a human being. There is no use of talking to a blind person. You are not the first person to edit. But , that doesn't mean that you are always right. The page mentions user. But can't you see the contents of it. Ok. I will copy paste the entire thing to the show's page itself. Then do something that makes me revert back to you... Object, object

Thanks for cleaning up this. Just so you know, it's caused by a bug in VisualEditor, which doesn't yet know what to do with non-breaking spaces in ref names (which is kind of a silly place for them, but they seem to have been added to a few articles through a script that can't tell the difference between article text and named references). Thanks again for cleaning that up. WhatamIdoing (talk) 07:36, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

Concerning the Athiyur article and talk page

In response to your post on the Athiyur talk page:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Athiyur I concur with your opinion Cmr08. I am currently copy-editing the article to include adding references. I currently have the GOCE inuse tag in place to prevent edit conflicts. I hope we can all work together and keep the article in the best condition possible. I have left a note on the talk page of one user who has continuously been adding copyrighted and watermarked inappropriate images to the article to please stop that. I have not seen any communication from that user. Hopefully that user as well as other editors will continue to try to improve or expand the article rather than disrupt other editing of the article, and or vandalize the article. What are your thoughts on this Cmr08? Carriearchdale (talk) 22:20, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

Hi Cmr08,

Could you be more specific in your edit when you say, "clean excess spacing"? I've looked at the old revision and the new revision, but I couldn't see a difference. Thank you again for your contributions on the articles that I've created. Robert4565 (talk) 04:37, 20 April 2014 (UTC)

Cmr08,

Good catch about that last edit you made. Even though it is common knowledge that the Summer Olympics are every four years and the specific years of the Olympics, it does sound better to say second straight Olympics. Robert4565 (talk) 20:15, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

HRM

"Halifax Regional Municipality" should not have been become "Halifax, Nova Scotia is like "Cape Breton Regional Municipality" being renamed Just "Cape Breton" . Someone though they changed "Halifax Regional Municipality" to "Halifax" - they - HRM Regional Council did not do that .They only accepted the LOGO . If you the press release they actually state that .Not the legal name of the Municipality .If anyone even look on their website -nothing changed not even the Logo yet but the legal name remains . So "Halifax Regional Municipality" is the legal name of the municipality that governs the area that the councils of the former cities of Halifax and Dartmouth along with the town of Bedford and the County of Halifax .There no city status its a Regional Municipality that is run under the "Halifax Regional Municipality Charter ". The popular name is Halifax but its unofficial . However the HRM only recognizes "Halifax, Nova Scotia" as the community (of the former city) just like Dartmouth ,Bedford or where I live Fall River . This is where your mail ,fire truck , or etc. goes as a part physical address . There are up to 10 streets that can have the same name but each will be a different community but only one can in one community . This happen everywhere else in NS so the civic address does not mean that the name of the municipality is in it ,it is the General Service Area name or Community . So as for the placename "Halifax, Nova Scotia" is only the area where the former city of Halifax was . So this is where the makeup of an address cannot end with "Halifax Regional Municipality" because it could be anywhere outside where the old city of Halifax was and be confusing and could a place 100 km away . That why when an article has a civic address that is within the Former city of Halifax its wrong to refer it to being as "Halifax Regional Municipality" because it does not match the article of area that is suppose be . According to the rules set out by Wikipedia the article should reflect what is the real world . In reality "Halifax, Nova Scotia" does not reflect "Halifax Regional Municipality" is .The area "Halifax, Nova Scotia" truly represents is where is present day community of Halifax is but in Wikipedia land its the article Halifax (former city) represents . Switching "Halifax Regional Municipality " to " Halifax, Nova Scotia only caused confusion between the two . If the municipality had a completely different name to avoid the confusion in the first place ,both in the real world and Wikipedia . The two articles should be based on what is in the real instead of majority vote.--19960401 (talk) 01:13, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

Notable Haligonians

Jesse Dangerously does not appear to be notable enough to be included on the list. Alex Killorn was born in Halifax, but moved to Beaconsfield as an infant and never played hockey while living in Halifax. While he is a native of Halifax, it's misleading to list him as a notable Haligonian athlete.

Future Hall of Famers

Cmr08,

Thank you for your response. I'm sorry about my comment because they are already in the hall of fame. The info boxes for NBA championships and Super Bowls both include hall of famers from their respective championships, but because the title said "future" I read that as being they weren't inducted yet. NBA Finals articles don't list hall of famers as future hall of famers. Robert4565 (talk) 05:28, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

NFL Draft list

Hi Cmr08,

It wasn't by mistake. Those names are listed twice in the reference. The names that were listed twice were drafted by the AFL and the NFL. The AFL used to be major league just like the NFL, several players even denied the NFL for the AFL. Robert4565 (talk) 12:56, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi again Cmr08,

You are right, it is odd that the player was the drafted by the NFL and AFL, but he was only listed once. I know the source is reliable though, in that has been used by many other users and is verifiable and copyrighted. I'll try to figure out why the name was listed only once. Robert4565 (talk) 03:45, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

The reference itself didn't list all the players drafted into both the AFL and NFL twice. I'm guessing it was the reference that made a mistake. However, I think it would be good to list everybody on the draft articles once because the title refers to the NFL Draft only. Comment on my talk page to tell me what you think. Robert4565 (talk) 01:32, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

I will look back at all the ones made and have their names listed once. Robert4565 (talk) 15:56, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Cmr08,

I checked over the articles and got rid of all the AFL drafts, but there were some people drafted in two different NFL drafts, so I didn't delete one of the names. Thank you very much for spotting this. Robert4565 (talk) 21:20, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Cmr08,

Thank you for correcting that! Those things do happen and I have seen it before, but I should have been more careful. You are a fantastic reviewer! Robert4565 (talk) 02:32, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

Your opinion of Public Domain on an Admiralty Chart

Hi Cmr08,

I'm looking for a little help or direction on Public Domain on a British Admiralty Chart. I'd like to post a British Admiralty chart, first published in 1860 with revisions up to 1927, in the WikiCommons to use on a wikipedia article. In your understanding of Wikipedia and Public Domain, is this now free for use?

I'm reading this section of the wikipedia Help: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Public_domain#Crown_copyrights

It seems to me this would apply, "Crown copyright for published works generally lasts for 50 years since the first publication (this is true not only for the UK but also e.g. for Canada or Australia)." 1927 + 50 years = 1977 so it seems OK.

The chart in question can be downloaded form this page: http://collectionscanada.gc.ca/pam_archives/index.php?fuseaction=genitem.displayItem&lang=eng&rec_nbr=3671521

NFL Draft articles I create

Hi Cmr08,

I just wanted to let you know that I do in fact click on every player to make sure that they are the correct person. The last article I created, List of South Carolina Gamecocks in the NFL Draft, took me several hours after creation because my internet had bad connect while fixing the names, so I had to wait a while. Thank you again for all of your help though! Robert4565 (talk) 23:19, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi again Cmr08,

I'm sorry for overriding your edit; it was not intentional. At the time, when I edited the dab links on my own, the edit history was not refreshed. Also, I told you that I checked all of the links just to make sure you knew and for you to possibly do less work. Robert4565 (talk) 02:27, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi Cmr08,

Thank you for your response. I'm not sure how many more list of draftees I'm going to create. It depends on how many a school has. I only create those articles if there have been a large enough number of draftees to make the subject significant to be worth including in an encyclopedia. I do feel the need to create these because Wikipedia has a shortage of these and many of NFL draftee articles by college have been made into good and featured articles. Robert4565 (talk) 04:30, 5 September 2014 (UTC) Also, you are right about at least two people reviewing the article for links. Robert4565 (talk) 04:32, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi Cmr08,

Thank you a lot for finding that! An red link of Stephanie White was found on 2000 WNBA Draft, indicating to readers that that person doesn't have an article. However, whoever put that as a red link wasn't aware that she already had an article, just with a different form of her name. They are the same person, so I will nominate the one I made for speedy deletion. Sometimes these do do happen and I have seen it before. Robert4565 (talk) 23:03, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi Cmr08,

I just wanted to let you know that I created the redirect. Robert4565 (talk) 04:39, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

dealing with copyright issues

I reverted back to the version you linked on my page, particularly because that version had more sourcing.

The template at Template:Copyvio (using the subst: process as described on the template page) will create a page that looks like [4] which has some of the additional steps of what to do to get some admins familiar with the copyright correction process involved and how to carry on editing in the meantime. if you can identify that there is a source from which copyright content was taken, we should probably have the versions of the article deleted from the history. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 03:46, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
