A couple of things

First, I am not sure if I thanked you for putting up a redirect from my IP addy to my current user name. So I will thank you now. (Even though that happened quite a while ago)

Second, you may want to archive this talk page, for it is getting huge.

"The Wiki Way" and similar proposals

I just wanted to compliment you on keeping an eye on this topic, while at the same time keeping your cool. My feeling is that Xiong is looking to engender heated responses, and it is a benefit to us all for him not simply to be rebuffed (when he's wrong and is seeking confrontation, rather than consensus), but for him to be rebuffed calmly, in the spirit of consensus, and without aggression. Thanks again. Nandesuka 12:09, 11 September 2005 (UTC)

The Wiki Way is not a proposal, and nothing is similar to it. — Xiongtalk* 06:25, 2005 September 12 (UTC)

Hi Cesar, I saw you'd deleted the above user page again, which I recently restored. Can you say what your reason was for deleting the page even though the user account is in use? I'm a little suspicious of the account because of previous allegations of sockpuppetry, as well as some strange editing, and if the user is requesting deletion of the user page, yet continues to edit, my suspicions increase. Page Protection Request

Posted here because it was DELETED from the Page Protection page. You won't even listen to my case, will you?

Would you PLEASE either protect or remove your entry on Ashida Kim so that internet trolls cannot keep going there to post the names of my friends so they can be attacked like abortion clinic doctors, several of whom were KILLED after their names were posted on the internet. I have asked nicely as many times as I can of as many administraptrs as I can contact, but no one ever does anything except ignore me and delete my posts because you love to use my fame to draw people to your silly site. How would you like it if I posted your address so punks could come take a poke at you? Isn't that why YOU hide behind all this proceure that makes it impossible to contact anyone and impossible to get any reply from so called administrators like yourself?

Ashida Kim

Ashida, the article as it stands now seems fair. I have looked through the history of your page and while there has been some vandalism, it's not been enough to warrant a page protection. Vandalism has been reverted five times in the past two months. You can deal with that level of vandalism yourself. It's unfortunate that someone would want to vandalize your page -- or any page for that matter -- but the amount of vandalism currently occurring is not enough to justify protecting the page, which is an extreme measure taken only to prevent very frequent and extensively disruptive vandalism or edit warring. · Katefan0(scribble) 21:51, 15 September 2005 (UTC) [edit] No Help At All Kate, what you are telling me is that I must now come here and monitor this entry every day to see if it is being vandalized. And if it is I must go through this same silly procedure to get it back to what it is now. A tremendous waste of time which serves the purpose of the trolls perfectly. You say I can deal with the vandalism myself? Not so. I am not an administrator. I had an account with you last time this happened, but you closed it down. To me you are just passing the buck and ducking the issue AGAIN! When you let these trolls publish the names of my friends, their lives are placed in danger. In my first post on this issue I quoted you a line where they bragged about videotaping some of my friends at their homes. That is STALKING! I don't know why you don't think that rises to the level of warranting you to click one icon and save a human life instead of clinging to some ridiculous procedure where a page must be vandalized a thousand times in a single week before you will do anything. Next, I can't for the life of me understand why you won't discuss this privately instead of making me repeat it all in public a hundred times. More silly procedure. Your rationale for not protecting this page, and the page itself with the names on it, have all been shown to the local authorities who assure me that if any of my friends have to set the dogs on any of the punks who creep up on them, that you can be held criminally liable for publishing the addresses. Seems to me any sane person would want to protect themselves from such an embarassment, and possible even prevent it with a single click of the mouse. Rather than continue to act like a lame lawyer who thinks the splitting hairs means anything to criminals. I deeply resent having to come here and embarrass you again and again. That alone should show you the wisdom of just doing the right thing. There can be only one reason why you refuse to make this simple accomodation- BECAUSE USING MY NAME BRINGS PEOPLE TO YOUR SITE, even if it puts me and my friends in jeopardy. That's is pretty sad, Kate. There is no reason that anyone else would keep up a webpage that the subject of has repeated asked be taken down. And, as I have shown with good reason. If one of my friends gets killed in his sleep by some pumped-up, steroid-raging UFC wannabee, worse yet, if one of my friends has to kill one of these punks, I hope you can live with yourself.

Ashida Kim

I'm sorry, but I cannot protect a page unless I'm following the Protection policy, and I cannot delete a page unless I'm following the Deletion policy. If I were to protect or delete the article without a valid reason based on these policies, it would quickly be reverted by other administrators, who can not only unprotect an article, but also undelete it. If, however, there is personal information on the article's history, the specific revisions with the offending information can sometimes be removed from the page history (you would need to tell an administrator which specific revisions need to be removed; you can do so by copying the links to the revisions from the page history). --cesarb 00:33, 16 September 2005 (UTC)
As an aside: I checked your account on the block log, where it would show if it had been blocked; it's never been blocked. You probably got hit by a block intended to someone else (it happens quite often to AOL users, for technical reasons). If you are able to post here, you probably can use your account. --cesarb 00:43, 16 September 2005 (UTC)

CesarB,

Thanks for supporting my RfA. I'll work hard to try to live up to the confidence you're showing in me. It's easy to treat Wikipedia as a game or a soapbox, but I don't treat it as either. One of the things I respect about you is that when I read your writing, it's clear that you don't think of it that way either. I'll continue down that path. Nandesuka 01:02, 17 September 2005 (UTC)

Bd777 block lifted, and personal attacks resume

Just thought you'd like to know that BD is responding to the lifting of his temp block with renewed personal attacks [2]:

"Well, I have no desire to brawl with anybody but Ryan's actions are so despicable I just don't want her anywhere near my talk page. She bully's people into accepting her twisted look at the world and when she runs into someone who's stronger (like me), she just tries to game the system to have them removed. I hope she doesn't think people are unaware of EXACTLY how she operates and that it's doomed for failuure.. Her ways are transparently obvious to intelligent people and spelled out in explicit fashion in my post below. In the end, people like that ultimately self-destruct because their motives are so fraught with hostility for others. And even for someone who's actions are as deplorable as Ryan's...it's kind of sad, isn't it?" Big Daddy 04:41, 5 October 2005 (UTC)
"But I forgive you man. You're an honest and decent person who, like me, only wants to remove the endemic POV from Wikipedia. But seriously equivocating someone who behaves as contemptably as Ryan with me??? That makes that vicious slime attack that guterrda spewed when he suggested the '777' in my name stood for white power, seem charitable by comparison." Big Daddy 13:15, 4 October 2005 (UTC)
"Ps On the bright side, Ryan's behavior makes Katefan and Hippocrite seem...er...not that bad. lol! :)" Big Daddy 04:41, 5 October 2005 (UTC)

Annoying block...

Hey, on User:Grutness's talk page you posted the following comment:

I made a (completely untested) patch to MediaWiki [1] which adds the flag I described above. If you manage to convince the developers to include this patch or something similar, and convince a bureaucrat to add the flag to your account, your problems with being blocked when your IP address is blocked should end. --cesarb 03:30, 14 October 2005 (UTC)

When I'm at home, I have the same IP address as Grutness, so could you do the same thing for me?

That might just do the trick. For me, for Supersaiyanplough - and also User:BL Lacertae, who seems to also be at the same IP address. There's discussion about this subject going on at Wikipedia:Blocking policy proposal - I'll mention it over there (feel free to add your comments!). Grutness...wha? 04:55, 14 October 2005 (UTC)

Page protection of Wikipedia:Copyrights

Hi. I notice that you were the last person to edit Wikipedia:Copyrights before it was protected. Any idea who protected it or why? How to get it unprotected? I ask because I am the second person to ask (on the Talk page) for a link from Wikipedia:Copyrights to Wikipedia:Fair use. The first was back in mid-September, mine yesterday. There has been no response to either. Where does one take a question like this? Why doesn't the Talk page cover the decision to protect the page? Why doesn't the edit history even show the protection going on (and who did it)?

Sorry to lay all this in your lap. I'd be happy to take it elsewhere if I could figure out where to go with it.

TIA, -- Mwanner | Talk 02:17, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

You are mistaken. I was not the last person to edit Wikipedia:Copyrights before it was protected.
I was the last person to edit Wikipedia:Copyrights after it was protected.
That page has been protected for so long it doesn't even show in the current protection log (which AFAIK was introduced around 2004). Of course, if you want the rationale for the protection, it is, as expected, at Wikipedia:Protected page (listed as permanently protected for legal reasons).
If you need to change a permanently protected page like that one, the best course of action would be to contact an administrator (or post to the noticeboard). Which is exactly what you did without noticing . I added the link to the "See also" section; I'm wary of touching the text itself.
--cesarb 03:10, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Actually, I did know you were an admin, I just wasn't sure if editing protected pages was among an admin's superpowers. And I was completely unaware of the existance of the Wikipedia:Protected page page. BTW, the edit history on the Protected page page goes back to 2003, and WP:Copyrights is there from before that.
Anyway, thank you for adding the link, and for the answer, above. I think, though, that the link belongs at the end of the first sentence in the Fair use materials and special requirements section, in parens "(See Wikipedia:Fair use)". Any advice on how to go about getting it there, other than the obvious Wikipedia talk:Copyrights page? I'd put a request there, but I'm not too optimistic. Is there a cabal ;-, at least for legal issues, that one can turn to?
One other question along these lines-- I can't be the only editor to hit a protected page and wonder what's going on, and what to do about it. Perhaps a template is needed for the top of protected pages, pointing to the list?
Many thanks, Mwanner | Talk 13:59, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

The sandbox, which you recently protected, is a place for new users to test their editing skills, something that is rather hard to do when they are prevented from editing the page. Not being an administrater myself, I cannot remove the block, but it is imperitive that you or another administrator do so soon. Thank you for your contrabutions as an administrator.--Akako| 01:43, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

Factual accuracy indeed!

Hmm, isn't wikipedia policy is supposed to be descriptive. So if a policy page were to say that all wikipedians dance the hula every night at 10:35pm hawaiian time, it might certainly merit a "disputed" tag. :-P

In this case the policy says that IAR may only be applied to structure of articles, and I'm pretty positive that that's not the case.

cfd technique

I have been just doing a {{db}} for speedies on categories that are a typo or where is it obviously a naming variation on an existing cat. I may have done some cfd's a month or two ago w/o updating the log, but I got a friendly reminder to do that. Most of my category templating has been driven by Special:Uncategorizedcategories. (This list was almost 1000, but now it is holding steady at about 150 with weekly maintenance). If the cat is not empty, I usually try to find them a parent category, even if they overlap with existing ones, or determine them to be orphans and mark them with db. My recollection is that the only true cfd's I have recently done are about controverial/banned mass media. I am still learning, so maybe I did mess up again. -- Fplay 00:21, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

I am having trouble telling who it was who did the rewrite of the RFC on Kelly Martin on Deleting stuff without consensus. Whoever did it, and it may have been a team effort, they deserve a Superhero Editor Barnstar for translating the anger and frustration into the different cogent view points. It is common to delete talk pages when articles are deleted. This makes sense, since the purpose of a talk page is to discuss improvements to an article. If there is no article, there is nothing to discuss. To keep the talk page active is only to circumvent the deletion. Slrubenstein | Talk 18:47, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

There are problems at MediaWiki:Monobook.js

The user User:Brian0918 has removed big chunks of the file, including the section for the Main Page Redesign / Usability Project.

He even remarked in one of his summaries that he doesn't know javascript.

That change you made for the Main Page Redesign Draft page has disappeared. Would you please take a look at MediaWiki:Monobook.js and restore our project's code? I'd really appreciate it.

I contacted Brian, and he put the code back (though I didn't actually look, but the draft page is working like it did). Still, you may want to talk to him to see if you can help him accomplish what he was trying to do (make monobook.js more download efficient by having pieces of it execute from other files). --Go for it! 20:25, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

Once again, I do not think that the website www.rio-online is spam. So please keep your hands off from this link! Everybody has the same rights!!! I therefore decided to place the link again on the site "Brazil" at the end. I will not place any other link. If you delete the link again, I will delete all other links containing affiliate marketing tools (including Google adwards) and we will discuss the topic in another forum. Please consider also, how many offices, restaurants, clubs etc. Are recommended in the city and will be affected in a negative way.

Hello, Cesar. Can you please discuss your objection to Template:Test1 using options here Template talk:Test1 or here Template talk:Test#New_Text_combining_test_and_test-n. Thank you. -- Avi 17:01, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for the reply. The multitude of test templates need to be pruned down. What do you suggest then? Also, I would like to poll for more of a consensus on using {{qif}} on talk pages. Personally, I got that from the {{Template:welcome3}} template; which I use regulalry with subst: I presume you fell strongly against that as well? -- Avi 17:08, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

No, but this was an anon user who may have downgradded the article by including a lie (that she had one daughter not two). That was the main problem. And i thought it was good faith to revert that for the sake of the major refit of the article.

{{deletedpage}} and templates

Howdy. Wouldn't it be best to simply leave protected-against-recreation templates blank, so that the {{deletedpage}} notice doesn't get transcluded whereever the template is used? I thought this was the general practice, but I'm probably wrong. android79 17:55, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

You didn't introduce any new errors (but there are still some unsourced statements there, which I do not know if are errors or not, and I didn't check the numbers). However, that section could use a rewrite (like the original it spawned from). --cesarb 02:07, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

brain picking

Hi Cesar,

What's up? I'm hoping to pick that remarkably tech-savvy brain of yours over a couple of issues. :-) I would like to remove all the special characters that precede the ndash and mdash in the javascript insert box. I never use those alphabets. Then, if possible, I'd like to add the tags <ref name=> and </ref> to the box; they're two of the three tags in use in the new cite.php referencing system.

  1. Is this possible?
  2. Will it slow down my load times of the edit view? How does that work, BTW—will the whole thing be loaded, and then some things hidden?
  3. On a related issue, I recently edited my .css file to remove the display of the Wikipedia logo in the top left, in the belief that this will speed up page loading for me —but now I'm wondering if I haven't made matters worse. Have I?

Warm wishes ENCEPHALON 16:15, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

Ok, Thanks CesarB. I think I'm going to pass on this idea: I don't want WP slowing down anymore than it already has for me (lately). And the flicker issue doesn't sound appealing. Besides, I've just figured out a brilliant way (for a dim low tech chap like myself ;-)) of producing a one click method of placing <ref name=>example reference</ref>, into the box when editing. The latest version of the WP Firefox toolbar allows you to specify a format feature. So if you type <ref name=>SELECTION</ref> under format property you can get your own refname "button". It's especially neat because if you highlight the text of the ref, for example CesarB. Editing Wikipedia. Journal of Wikiness, with a single click you can produce <ref name=>CesarB. Editing Wikipedia. Journal of Wikiness</ref>. I'm so pleased with me. ;-) And God bless Bananaweizen & Tom Koch. ENCEPHALON 17:21, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

Anon vandal 66.99.49.194

I disagree with your decision not to block this vandal IP, or even warn the user(s) about their vandalism. "Silly vandalism", as you described it, is still harmful to the project, and that IP is a longtime offender with almost no history of constructive edits. I wonder if I might ask you some questions about this.

  • First, could you confirm that you did delete my user page. There dosn't seem to be any way for me to distinguish between an administrator doing it and a vandal doing it.
  • Second, is it normal to delete user pages without leaving any explanation. It seems a bit of an odd practice. Did I miss something ?
  • Third, I can't work out why you might have deleted it. As far as I am aware it did not breach any guidline. Please advise.

I have some questions about you deleting my user page. Not sure whether to do it here or on my discussion page. Have put them on my discussion page for the moment, so, please see User talk:J1838. Many thanks J1838 20:00, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

I have just done a massive refactoring of Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Tony Sidaway/Workshop, in order to

  • remove personal attacks, irrelevant comments, and bickering
  • make the page readable and usable for the arbcom, as at its previous size of 183KB, it was not.

As your words appear on that page, I'm letting you know so that you may review the changes. I have tried not to let any bias or POV I may have color my summaries; however, it's a wiki, so if you think I've misrepresented your words, please fix them. re: User:J1838

Good evening. This user has requested the undeletion of his/her user page on WP:DRV. I would be interested in your understanding of this question. I would also like to know why you felt it necessary to protect the page as a deleted page. That's a step generally reserved for cases of egregious and repeated re-creation. The edit history doesn't seem to show that abusive a pattern of recreation. Thanks. Rossami (talk) 05:45, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

Character encoding

Cesar, Many thanks for your response on the problems of Czech (and other characters). It's the first reply that makes sense! I will try what you've suggested, though the problem must be huge. I have discovered a work round that helps me (but nobody else), which is to paste the appropriate words into a Microsoft Word document, where they show up correctly. Skinsmoke 01:41, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

Another workaround would be to use Firefox. Just like with Microsoft Word, they should show up correctly; the problem is with MSIE only (and perhaps with Netscape 4, but nobody uses Netscape 4 anymore). In fact, most modern browsers should work fine. I hope future versions of MSIE are better. --cesarb 03:31, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

No luck with your suggested workround. However, I'm puzzled why the problem should be confined to Wikipedia. Practically all other websites display correctly. Is the problem not a lot simpler than everyone is assuming? Wikipedia uses Sans Seriff, which in MSIE is not Unicode enabled (unlike, for instance, Arial, which is). How to delete email confirmation notice on my watchlist?

At the Village pump discussion of this, you said we should insert the line #confirmemail { display: none } and someone else said to put it on our Monobook.css. I went to User:Mbeychok/monobook.css and then to the edit screen for that page and inserted the line that you recommended. Absolutely nothing happened! When I saved the edit, the line showed up as:

1. #confirmemail { display: none }

and it did not delete the email confirmation notice on my watch list. What have I done wrong? Or not done? I will wait for your answer here on your Talk page. - mbeychok 01:04, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

If you are using other skin, the page name is different (for instance, Classic uses /standard.css instead of /monobook.css; I have a full list at Wikipedia:Catalogue of CSS classes). Also, it will only take effect after the browser reloads your stylesheet; a forced reload (Shift-Reload on Firefox) might be needed (see Wikipedia:Clear your cache for instructions on other browsers). Last but not least, looking at the history of your monobook.css, none of the revisions are correct; it's exactly #confirmemail { display: none }, all lowercase (CSS is case-sensitive). --cesarb 16:49, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

Office Actions

Who was desysoped? Kaldari 19:02, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

See the rights log on meta if you are really interested. Since the desysopping lasted only three minutes, I prefer to not point fingers (which is also why I'm not adding the reference directly to the page). --cesarb 19:06, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
So this is a "secret" desysoping? Kaldari 19:18, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
No, a number of people have commented on the sysop's user talk page, anyone who was following the events at the time saw it, and I believe it was also discussed on the mailing list and/or IRC. I just do not want to have a permanent policy page with a big "look at this sysop! He went against Jimbo!" banner (which is the effect you would have by giving the details about it). --cesarb 19:25, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
No one's asking you to write it on the policy page. Saying that people will be desysoped for reverting an office action is a pretty bold claim, especially compared with Jimbo's rather timid proclamation that someone "might" get blocked for reverting Office Actions. Desysoping is a pretty huge jump from blocking. This needs some kind of explanation. What were the circumstances surrounding this? Was it a repeated or aggrevated offense? Who performed the desysoping? Jimbo? Do other people have the authority to desysop people for violating this policy? Who decided that desysoping was the proper course of action? Was this decided through some sort of process or declared by Jimbo? Kaldari 20:38, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
Nevermind, I see you have posted an explanation to the Office Actions talk page. Thanks! Kaldari 20:44, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Having taken a look at the idea, I wouldn't actually recommend any changes for the other skins. This placement really suits Monobook, but the others all have much more classic layouts that don't lend themselves well to these kinds of placement tricks. If someone had a good idea and needed some CSS expertise, I could work something up. As it is, I think it doesn't need special treatment in other skins. — Saxifrage 22:43, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

I need your advice

Hi, it's been awhile since we've talked. I'm in need of the advice of a veteran user on something I've been working on for quite some time. I undertook a complete overhaul of the Community Portal, only to have someone revert it to a version of the page that existed months ago. Then along comes an admin and protects the page. Not knowing what all my options were, I called for a vote to get the page changed back. My question is: is there anything I've overlooked in my efforts to get the page restored? --Go for it! 19:21, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

When I created {{softredirect}}, my intention (explicited since the beginning on Category:Wikipedia:Soft redirects) was that articles should never receive it ("Do not add articles to this category."); the category is also a non-article category (which should not be used on articles but can be used on non-article pages). All the redirects from the article namespace using that template are historical artefacts (they were nonworking interwiki redirects, which I turned into soft redirects), which I'm working on eliminating.

Wikipedia:Soft redirect says explicitly that soft redirects to the Wiktionary should use {{wi}}; if it does not merit a {{wi}}, it should not have a soft redirect at all (MediaWiki:Noarticletext and MediaWiki:Noarticletextanon, which show when an article does not exist, already link to the definition on Wiktionary, so it can be found even without a redirect). There is nothing on Wikipedia:Soft redirect which says {{wi}} is only for articles "that could potentially be expanded to a Wikipedia article". Finally, I see nothing on the AfD and RfD that says the consensus is to use {{softredirect}}; the AfD result is a delete, and the RfD result was never announced (instead it was closed as "already turned into a soft redirect"); notice that both people who asked for a soft redirect never specified {{softredirect}}, and {{wi}} is also known as a soft redirect.

Because of all that, I'm reverting to the {{wi}} version, and undoing the changes to the intro of the category.

--cesarb 23:46, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the explanation and my apologies for the misunderstanding. My objection to using the {{wi}} template was that it invites the user to start an article, when AFD has established that there should be no article in this case. Regards. --Muchness 05:54, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

MediaWiki:Prefs-help-email

You recently changed MediaWiki:Prefs-help-email to read (added text in bold):

* E-mail (optional): Enables others to e-mail you from your user or user talk page, without revealing your e-mail address. It will be revealed when you use the "E-mail this user" feature. Please note that if you change your e-mail address, you will need to reconfirm your address.

When I read this recently, I thought it was a mistake because it seemed self-contradictory ("will the address be revealed or won't it?"). A better wording might be something like:

* E-mail (optional): Allows us to e-mail your password to you if you forget it. If you also "Enable e-mail from other users", then others can e-mail you from your User or User talk page by using the "E-mail this user" feature. Note that the sender's e-mail address will be visible to the recipient. If you change your e-mail address, you will need to reconfirm your address.

It's more wordy, but less susceptible to misinterpretation, I think. - dcljr (talk) 04:46, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

Permission to use IRC logs.

Hey there, I was wondering if I had your permission to publish some of your IRC chat on Wikipedia, specifically:

«20:43:33» {+cesarb} Avillia: your attempts at a range blacklist are highly incorrect
«20:44:08» {+cesarb} Avillia: it's 69.210.0.0/16
«20:44:16» {+cesarb} Avillia: read CIDR for why
«20:44:38» {+cesarb} Avillia: the 0-255 way uses -, not / ;-)

I previously had these up in accordance to m:IRC Channels, as the channel you said it in #vandalism-en-wp did not have a rule against logging visible on a related website or on WP:IRC and related pages. However, despite the fact that the logs were related to a ongoing discussion, and they were trimmed to size, a administrator with personal involvement to the issue deleted the content. As such, I am seeking permission of use from every user I am quoted. Your cooperation would be appreciated.

Thanks, Avillia 19:53, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

Please note that I've removed the quoted lines per the IRC channel's privacy policy, which can be read at countervandalism.org/wiki/IRC_policies_and_guidelines. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 20:28, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

Edit buttons

Hi CesarB. You have been recommended to me as the person who could answer this question: Where in MediaWiki can I add the buttons that normally appear above the edit box, such as the one that adds the signature? I am an admin on some Simple English projects which do not have those buttons, so I want to add them. Or do I need to get developer intervention? --Cromwellt|Talk 15:44, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the explanation, CesarB. I checked what you mentioned, and found that I do have the edit bar selected in my preferences, but it still doesn't show up. I looked at the code you mentioned also, and while I can somewhat understand the code (I've had some minor programming experience a long time ago), and I can even find where the redirect button is added, I can't tell how to fix my problem. There are several things at the end of the initial long list in Monobook.js here that are not present on the projects I'm working on, but I don't think I need all of them. If you have a bit of free time, can you look at Simple English Wikibooks and Simple English Wikiquote? The other simple English projects have the buttons. --Cromwellt|Talk 22:10, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
You were right, CesarB. The buttons are back for me now. It was related to JavaScript permissions which I was blocking using NoScript, a Firefox extension. Unfortunately, my extension manager had a serious bug, so it took a reinstall to fix the problem. Thanks for your help. You put me on the right track. Happy editing! --Cromwellt|Talk 23:47, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

CSS question

Hi - I'm no CSS expert, but I've recently updated template:Infobox U.S. state so that the "grouped" rows are actual rows but without row borders (but with vertical cell separators). Doing this in a specific template seems a little ugly (and, sigh, border-top doesn't seem to work with IE in a TR). Do you think toprow and mergedrow styles might be generally useful additions to common.css (like borderless)? If you could easily do this (or can think of other alternatives), I'd appreciate it. I also asked user:Ed g2s who apparently added the boderless infobox style (no response yet). Thanks. -- Rick Block (talk) 04:15, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Any idea why no one has commented at MediaWiki talk:Common.css about this? Isn't "virtual rows" (with embedded <br>s) a really bad idea? I'm not overly concerned about this, just slightly curious. -- Rick Block (talk) 03:34, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Casey Jones

Thanks for catching that, i knew he was a baseball player but just assumed there was a different article for him, i should have checked the history logs.--Gephart 02:19, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Just to let you know that what you just deleted was the creation-protected template that I had just inserted and protected, and not the actual nonsense article itself. Now it looks like I'm wheel-warring with you because I just reinserted and reprotected it... -- Francs2000 17:13, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
