I just wanted to compliment you on keeping an eye on this topic, while at the same time keeping your cool. My feeling is that Xiong is looking to engender heated responses, and it is a benefit to us all for him not simply to be rebuffed (when he's wrong and is seeking confrontation, rather than consensus), but for him to be rebuffed calmly, in the spirit of consensus, and without aggression. Hi Cesar, I saw you'd deleted the above user page again, which I recently restored. Can you say what your reason was for deleting the page even though the user account is in use? I'm a little suspicious of the account because of previous allegations of sockpuppetry, as well as some strange editing, and if the user is requesting deletion of the user page, yet continues to edit, my suspicions increase. Page Protection Request

Posted here because it was DELETED from the Page Protection page. You won't even listen to my case, will you?

Would you PLEASE either protect or remove your entry on Ashida Kim so that internet trolls cannot keep going there to post the names of my friends so they can be attacked like abortion clinic doctors, several of whom were KILLED after their names were posted on the internet. I have asked nicely as many times as I can of as many administraptrs as I can contact, but no one ever does anything except ignore me and delete my posts because you love to use my fame to draw people to your silly site. How would you like it if I posted your address so punks could come take a poke at you? Isn't that why YOU hide behind all this proceure that makes it impossible to contact anyone and impossible to get any reply from so called administrators like yourself?

Ashida, the article as it stands now seems fair. I have looked through the history of your page and while there has been some vandalism, it's not been enough to warrant a page protection. Vandalism has been reverted five times in the past two months. You can deal with that level of vandalism yourself. Seems to me any sane person would want to protect themselves from such an embarassment, and possible even prevent it with a single click of the mouse. Rather than continue to act like a lame lawyer who thinks the splitting hairs means anything to criminals. I deeply resent having to come here and embarrass you again and again. That alone should show you the wisdom of just doing the right thing. There can be only one reason why you refuse to make this simple accomodation- BECAUSE USING MY NAME BRINGS PEOPLE TO YOUR SITE, even if it puts me and my friends in jeopardy. That's is pretty sad, Kate. There is no reason that anyone else would keep up a webpage that the subject of has repeated asked be taken down. And, as I have shown with good reason. If one of my friends gets killed in his sleep by some pumped-up, steroid-raging UFC wannabee, worse yet, if one of my friends has to kill one of these punks, I hope you can live with yourself.

I'm sorry, but I cannot protect a page unless I'm following the Protection policy, and I cannot delete a page unless I'm following the Deletion policy. If I were to protect or delete the article without a valid reason based on these policies, it would quickly be reverted by other administrators, who can not only unprotect an article, but also undelete it. If, however, there is personal information on the article's history, the specific revisions with the offending information can sometimes be removed from the page history (you would need to tell an administrator which specific revisions need to be removed; you can do so by copying the links to the revisions from the page history). --cesarb 00:33, 16 September 2005 (UTC)
As an aside: I checked your account on the block log, where it would show if it had been blocked; it's never been blocked. You probably got hit by a block intended to someone else (it happens quite often to AOL users, for technical reasons). McDonald's article

Hi, Would you mind taking a look at McDonald's? For some reason, I can't revert the vandalism on that page. It works fine on preview, but after saving, it's back to what it was (a text saying: YO GUYS BRING BACK THE MCRIB PLZ!!!). Urgent vandal help needed

Diacrit (talk • contribs • page moves • block user • block log) (blocked) - persistent user who creates numerous user names to remove Template:Foreignchar from various articles. Created user names include: User:Jeaijij, User:Agraman, User:Oagafauou, User:Qesecaue, User:Uefot, User:Huaelo, User:Bifo, User:Timoa, User:Feoouubiao, User:Eooaqinol, User:Xeuuces, and that's only ones I have caught on recent changes page. Page protection of Wikipedia:Copyrights

Hi. I notice that you were the last person to edit Wikipedia:Copyrights before it was protected. Any idea who protected it or why? How to get it unprotected? I ask because I am the second person to ask (on the Talk page) for a link from Wikipedia:Copyrights to Wikipedia:Fair use. The first was back in mid-September, mine yesterday. There has been no response to either. Where does one take a question like this? Why doesn't the Talk page cover the decision to protect the page? Why doesn't the edit history even show the protection going on (and who did it)?

Sorry to lay all this in your lap. I'd be happy to take it elsewhere if I could figure out where to go with it.

You are mistaken. I was not the last person to edit Wikipedia:Copyrights before it was protected.
I was the last person to edit Wikipedia:Copyrights after it was protected.
That page has been protected for so long it doesn't even show in the current protection log (which AFAIK was introduced around 2004). Of course, if you want the rationale for the protection, it is, as expected, at Wikipedia:Protected page (listed as permanently protected for legal reasons).
If you need to change a permanently protected page like that one, the best course of action would be to contact an administrator (or post to the noticeboard). Which is exactly what you did without noticing ☺. I added the link to the "See also" section; I'm wary of touching the text itself.

Actually, I did know you were an admin, I just wasn't sure if editing protected pages was among an admin's superpowers. And I was completely unaware of the existance of the Wikipedia:Protected page page. BTW, the edit history on the Protected page page goes back to 2003, and WP:Copyrights is there from before that.
Anyway, thank you for adding the link, and for the answer, above. I think, though, that the link belongs at the end of the first sentence in the Fair use materials and special requirements section, in parens "(See Wikipedia:Fair use)". Any advice on how to go about getting it there, other than the obvious Wikipedia talk:Copyrights page? I'd put a request there, but I'm not too optimistic. Is there a cabal ;-, at least for legal issues, that one can turn to?
One other question along these lines-- I can't be the only editor to hit a protected page and wonder what's going on, and what to do about it. Perhaps a template is needed for the top of protected pages, pointing to the list?

Factual accuracy indeed!

Hmm, isn't wikipedia policy is supposed to be descriptive. So if a policy page were to say that all wikipedians dance the hula every night at 10:35pm hawaiian time, it might certainly merit a "disputed" tag. :-P

In this case the policy says that IAR may only be applied to structure of articles, and I'm pretty positive that that's not the case.

cfd technique

I have been just doing a {{db}} for speedies on categories that are a typo or where is it obviously a naming variation on an existing cat. I may have done some cfd's a month or two ago w/o updating the log, but I got a friendly reminder to do that. Most of my category templating has been driven by Special:Uncategorizedcategories. (This list was almost 1000, but now it is holding steady at about 150 with weekly maintenance). If the cat is not empty, I usually try to find them a parent category, even if they overlap with existing ones, or determine them to be orphans and mark them with db. My recollection is that the only true cfd's I have recently done are about controverial/banned mass media. I am still learning, so maybe I did mess up again. -- Fplay 00:21, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

It is common to delete talk pages when articles are deleted. This makes sense, since the purpose of a talk page is to discuss improvements to an article. There are problems at MediaWiki:Monobook.js

The user User:Brian0918 has removed big chunks of the file, including the section for the Main Page Redesign / Usability Project.

He even remarked in one of his summaries that he doesn't know javascript.

That change you made for the Main Page Redesign Draft page has disappeared. Would you please take a look at MediaWiki:Monobook.js and restore our project's code? I'd really appreciate it.

Once again, I do not think that the website www.rio-online is spam. If rio online is spam www.rioforpartiers, vivabrasil, hy brazil and all pages conataining travel related content and furthermore - sites in Portuguese only are spam and/or not in the right menu. brain picking

I'm hoping to pick that remarkably tech-savvy brain of yours over a couple of issues. :-) I would like to remove all the special characters that precede the ndash and mdash in the javascript insert box. I never use those alphabets. Then, if possible, I'd like to add the tags <ref name=> and </ref> to the box; they're two of the three tags in use in the new cite.php referencing system.

  1. Is this possible?
  2. Will it slow down my load times of the edit view? How does that work, BTW—will the whole thing be loaded, and then some things hidden?
  3. On a related issue, I recently edited my .css file to remove the display of the Wikipedia logo in the top left, in the belief that this will speed up page loading for me —but now I'm wondering if I haven't made matters worse. Have I?

Besides, I've just figured out a brilliant way (for a dim low tech chap like myself ;-)) of producing a one click method of placing <ref name=>example reference</ref>, into the box when editing. The latest version of the WP Firefox toolbar allows you to specify a format feature. So if you type <ref name=>SELECTION</ref> under format property you can get your own refname "button". It's especially neat because if you highlight the text of the ref, for example CesarB. Editing Wikipedia. Journal of Wikiness, with a single click you can produce <ref name=>CesarB.   • Third, I can't work out why you might have deleted it. As far as I am aware it did not breach any guidline. Please advise.

Character encoding

Cesar, Many thanks for your response on the problems of Czech (and other characters). It's the first reply that makes sense! I will try what you've suggested, though the problem must be huge. I have discovered a work round that helps me (but nobody else), which is to paste the appropriate words into a Microsoft Word document, where they show up correctly. Another workaround would be to use Firefox. Just like with Microsoft Word, they should show up correctly; the problem is with MSIE only (and perhaps with Netscape 4, but nobody uses Netscape 4 anymore). No luck with your suggested workround. However, I'm puzzled why the problem should be confined to Wikipedia. Practically all other websites display correctly. Is the problem not a lot simpler than everyone is assuming? Wikipedia uses Sans Seriff, which in MSIE is not Unicode enabled (unlike, for instance, Arial, which is). How to delete email confirmation notice on my watchlist?

At the Village pump discussion of this, you said we should insert the line #confirmemail { display: none } and someone else said to put it on our Monobook.css. I went to User:Mbeychok/monobook.css and then to the edit screen for that page and inserted the line that you recommended. Absolutely nothing happened! When I saved the edit, the line showed up as:

If you are using other skin, the page name is different (for instance, Classic uses /standard.css instead of /monobook.css; I have a full list at Wikipedia:Catalogue of CSS classes). Also, it will only take effect after the browser reloads your stylesheet; a forced reload (Shift-Reload on Firefox) might be needed (see Wikipedia:Clear your cache for instructions on other browsers). Last but not least, looking at the history of your monobook.css, none of the revisions are correct; it's exactly #confirmemail { display: none }, all lowercase (CSS is case-sensitive). --cesarb 16:49, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

Re: Unicode damage.

I was using Mozilla 1.7.8 (20050511) on my desktop to do that edit. I suspect it has to do with not having all Unicode fonts -- the fancy character pallete at the end of the editing field shows up very distorted on this workstation.

No, a number of people have commented on the sysop's user talk page, anyone who was following the events at the time saw it, and I believe it was also discussed on the mailing list and/or IRC. No one's asking you to write it on the policy page. Saying that people will be desysoped for reverting an office action is a pretty bold claim, especially compared with Jimbo's rather timid proclamation that someone "might" get blocked for reverting Office Actions. Desysoping is a pretty huge jump from blocking. This needs some kind of explanation. What were the circumstances surrounding this? Was it a repeated or aggrevated offense? Who performed the desysoping? Jimbo? Do other people have the authority to desysop people for violating this policy? Who decided that desysoping was the proper course of action? Having taken a look at the idea, I wouldn't actually recommend any changes for the other skins. This placement really suits Monobook, but the others all have much more classic layouts that don't lend themselves well to these kinds of placement tricks. I need your advice

Hi, it's been awhile since we've talked. I'm in need of the advice of a veteran user on something I've been working on for quite some time. I undertook a complete overhaul of the Community Portal, only to have someone revert it to a version of the page that existed months ago. Then along comes an admin and protects the page. Not knowing what all my options were, I called for a vote to get the page changed back. Protologism

When I created {{softredirect}}, my intention (explicited since the beginning on Category:Wikipedia:Soft redirects) was that articles should never receive it ("Do not add articles to this category."); the category is also a non-article category (which should not be used on articles but can be used on non-article pages). All the redirects from the article namespace using that template are historical artefacts (they were nonworking interwiki redirects, which I turned into soft redirects), which I'm working on eliminating.

Wikipedia:Soft redirect says explicitly that soft redirects to the Wiktionary should use {{wi}}; if it does not merit a {{wi}}, it should not have a soft redirect at all (MediaWiki:Noarticletext and MediaWiki:Noarticletextanon, which show when an article does not exist, already link to the definition on Wiktionary, so it can be found even without a redirect). There is nothing on Wikipedia:Soft redirect which says {{wi}} is only for articles "that could potentially be expanded to a Wikipedia article". Finally, I see nothing on the AfD and RfD that says the consensus is to use {{softredirect}}; the AfD result is a delete, and the RfD result was never announced (instead it was closed as "already turned into a soft redirect"); notice that both people who asked for a soft redirect never specified {{softredirect}}, and {{wi}} is also known as a soft redirect.

Because of all that, I'm reverting to the {{wi}} version, and undoing the changes to the intro of the category.

When I read this recently, I thought it was a mistake because it seemed self-contradictory ("will the address be revealed or won't it?"). A better wording might be something like:

* E-mail (optional): Allows us to e-mail your password to you if you forget it. If you also "Enable e-mail from other users", then others can e-mail you from your User or User talk page by using the "E-mail this user" feature. Note that the sender's e-mail address will be visible to the recipient. If you change your e-mail address, you will need to reconfirm your address.

I see no problem in quoting these particular lines; but I also fail to see any use on quoting them (and also, they only make sense with the example of incorrect usage some lines before it on the log). Hi, except for you (not so critical) example at Voiced velar plosive, these templates are unused, so I think there is little reason to keep them up to date. Edit buttons

Hi CesarB. You have been recommended to me as the person who could answer this question: Where in MediaWiki can I add the buttons that normally appear above the edit box, such as the one that adds the signature? Thanks for the explanation, CesarB. I checked what you mentioned, and found that I do have the edit bar selected in my preferences, but it still doesn't show up. I looked at the code you mentioned also, and while I can somewhat understand the code (I've had some minor programming experience a long time ago), and I can even find where the redirect button is added, I can't tell how to fix my problem. There are several things at the end of the initial long list in Monobook.js here that are not present on the projects I'm working on, but I don't think I need all of them. If you have a bit of free time, can you look at Simple English Wikibooks and Simple English Wikiquote? The other simple English projects have the buttons. --Cromwellt|Talk 22:10, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
You were right, CesarB. The buttons are back for me now. It was related to JavaScript permissions which I was blocking using NoScript, a Firefox extension. Unfortunately, my extension manager had a serious bug, so it took a reinstall to fix the problem. Thanks for your help. You put me on the right track. CSS question

Hi - I'm no CSS expert, but I've recently updated template:Infobox U.S. state so that the "grouped" rows are actual rows but without row borders (but with vertical cell separators). Doing this in a specific template seems a little ugly (and, sigh, border-top doesn't seem to work with IE in a TR). Do you think toprow and mergedrow styles might be generally useful additions to common.css (like borderless)? If you could easily do this (or can think of other alternatives), I'd appreciate it.
