Welcome[edit]

Hi, Cerberusrunning. This is NOT some automated message...it's from a real person. You can talk to me right now. Welcome to Wikipedia! I noticed you've just joined, and wanted to give you a few tips to get you started. If you have any questions, please talk to us. The tips below should help you to get started. Best of luck!  Chzz  ►  19:02, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ようこそ
  • You don't need to read anything - anybody can edit; just go to an article and edit it. Be Bold, but please don't put silly stuff in - it will be removed very quickly, and will annoy people.
  • Ask for help. Talk to us live, or edit this page, put {{helpme}} and describe what help you need. Someone will reply very quickly - usually within a few minutes.
  • Edit existing articles, before you make your own. Look at some subjects that you know about, and see if you can make them a bit better. For example, Wikipedia:Cleanup#2009.
  • When you're ready, read about Your first article. It should be about something well-known, and it will need references.

Good luck with editing; please drop me a line some time on my own talk page.

There's lots of information below. Once again, welcome to the fantastic world of Wikipedia!

Thank you for experimenting with Wikipedia. Your test worked, and the page that you created has been or soon will be deleted. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you want to do. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. New pages[edit]

Hello. I moved the page you created to User:Cerberusrunning/Kim Eveleth so that you can work on it to get it up to Wikipedia standards. It's a good idea to create pages in your user space to work on them so that they do not get deleted. Once you think the article is ready, put the {{helpme}} tag here on your talk page with a note and someone will come by and let you know if it is ready. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 02:43, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Charles Dennis[edit]

Sorry for the short delay in responding.

In future, when you leave messages on talk pages, please could you make a new section at the end of the page (for new discussions) by putting a heading such as == Charles Dennis ==.

Replying to existing messages within the same section is fine; you should indent those replies with a colon (:) at the start of each line - and then :: and ::: etc.

This results in a conversation thread, like this...

First message here chzz (talk) 00:01, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I will look at your question ASAP - probably in the next few hours - and I'll let you know when I have replied. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  11:57, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have now replied to your questions; please see user talk:chzz#Charles Dennis.  Chzz  ►  12:56, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Referencing[edit]

Simple references[edit]

These require two parts;

a)
Chzz is 98 years old.<ref> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref>

He likes tea. <ref> [http://www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.com Tea website] </ref>
b) A section called "References" with the special code "{{reflist}}";
== References ==
{{reflist}}

(an existing article is likely to already have one of these sections)

To see the result of that, please look at user:chzz/demo/simpleref. Edit it, and check the code; perhaps make a test page of your own, such as user:Cerberusrunning/reftest and try it out.

Named references[edit]

Chzz was born in 1837, <ref name="MyBook">
"The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009.
</ref> in Footown.<ref name="MyBook"/>

Note that the second usage has a / (and no closing ref tag). This needs a reference section as above; please see user:chzz/demo/namedref to see the result.

Citation templates[edit]

You can put anything you like between <ref> and </ref>, but using citation templates makes for a neat, consistent look;

Chzz has 37 Olympic medals. <ref> {{Citation
 | last = Smith
 | first = John
 | title = Olympic medal winners of the 20th century
 | publication-date = 2001
 | publisher = [[Cambridge University Press]]
 | page = 125
 | isbn = 0-521-37169-4
}}
</ref>

Please see user:chzz/demo/citeref to see the result.

For more help and tips on that subject, see user:chzz/help/refs.

How To Do References[edit]

Chzz, thanks for the information on how to set up references. Do I need to make all the references in the Charles Dennis article I'm working on look like the examples you gave me?

By the way, do you know what Wikipedia user can remove the "bad" notes at the top of the Charles Dennis page?

I'm afraid Chzz is away for a while, but I shall endeavour to answer your query. Anyone can remove the "bad" notes at the top of the article, including you, but only if they are now obsolete. I fear you still need more citations on the Charles Dennis article: every fact that could be challenged (claims to fame, etc) needs to have a citation. Hope that helps, - Jarry1250 [ humourousdiscuss ] 10:09, 28 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re. Charles Dennis

Good work adding the refs; I've just removed the tag. Sorry for the delayed response.  Chzz  ►  12:21, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Spotlight[edit]

Hi there. Hopefully you'll remember me, from my trying to help you; well, now it's my turn to ask for help.

I'm trying to help re-launch an idea called "Spotlight". The notion is to select an article and work on it collectively, via live discussion, for one week. If lots of people get involved, it can work really well; in the past, the project died off through lack of participants. Anyone can help out, because that's the whole point - we have many and varied skills, but between us, we can do amazing things. So - please join the channel, and add yourself to the participants in WP:SPOTLIGHT. Thanks for your time!  Chzz  ►  22:27, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Going On (play) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Hello, Cerberusrunning. You have new messages at MichaelQSchmidt's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

The problem is that you're creating the article without any content. If you create the article at User:Cerberusrunning/Kim Eveleth, fill it in, then move it to the mainspace, you should be fine. (Make sure you're pretty explicit about it meeting the inclusion criteria, see WP:N and make sure to cite sources. Cheers, WilyD 18:46, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
