Proposed revision of Lucia Fairchild Fuller article[edit]

Greetings. I see that you have made contributions to the Lucia Fairchild Fuller article. I have become interested in the topic and have drafted an expansion at my sandbox: User:CornishFourColumns/sandbox. You are welcome to make further edits before I transfer it into the article space. Additionally, I welcome comments that you may have at User:CornishFourColumns/sandbox. Sincerely, CornishFourColumns (talk) 16:16, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello CornishFourColumns, Great work on the article. And, I appreciate your reaching out about the article improvements that you have made. I like that you provided more information in the article and tightened up captions, etc.
In taking a look at the changes I am confused about whether original references stayed with the content. For instance, if a reference covers multiple sentences and new information is inserted, was the reference copied so that it provided a citation for the content before the insert?
Also, there was a change in the day of her birth, but I am not finding a reference for that information.
I am kind of foggy in the morning, though, so I can look at this a bit further later today.–CaroleHenson (talk) 16:38, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
CornishFourColumns Oh, wow! You did a great job expanding the article. I see that there were some missing citations, so I will look for sources where needed. I hadn't looked at the original in article space - so I was definitely foggy yesterday. Thanks for bearing with me.–CaroleHenson (talk) 05:12, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What to do with avocados[edit]

1 c toasted pine nuts, 2 bunches of basil, 1/2 c olive oil, 3-4 garlic cloves peeled, 2-3 avocados, lime juice to make it the right consistency, salt/pepper to taste. Throw it all in a processor and blend it. Really, simple and yummy over noodles, rice, quinoa, etc. SusunW (talk) 21:18, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, that sounds amazing!–CaroleHenson (talk) 21:21, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It's really yummy. Happy accident. I like cream pesto. Didn't have cream, but as I live in Mexico, I have tons of avocados. They are creamy. Brain said...add lime, it'll be good :) SusunW (talk) 21:28, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
What fun! I have thought from time to time about living in Mexico. I love Puerto Vallarta and the area south of Puerto Vallarta (Mismaloya, etc.)... and a small town called El Tuito. Over the years, PV has become my "go to" vacation spot.–CaroleHenson (talk) 21:34, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm way far south. Mérida, Yucatán. We love it here. SusunW (talk) 21:41, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like there is some amazing architecture. For some reason, some of it reminds me a bit of Oaxaca. I am glad you are happy there!–CaroleHenson (talk) 21:48, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have basil leaves so I just made a simple guacamole and limeade and will let you know how the pesto goes when I have all the stuff.–CaroleHenson (talk) 21:55, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Clare Grady[edit]

Thanks so much for helping improve the Clare Grady article. I agree that her philosophy needs to be clarified. An article that helps that is this one: [1]. Also, she worked for many years at Loaves & Fishes, an Ithaca, New York soup kitchen: [2]. I’m going to be away from the computer all day tomorrow and possibly all day Monday. Feel free to improve the article more. I should have fleshed it out to make a clearer article, but I had a limited amount of time to improve it for DYK. Thanks again, Thriley (talk) 07:19, 14 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thriley My pleasure! It looks as if today is the last day to nominate for DYK per WP:DYK.–CaroleHenson (talk) 21:24, 14 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Help with Ed Lopez[edit]

Hi Carole - you helped improve the article Ed Lopez during a discussion about deleting the article. I was wondering if you could help with an issue or two on that page now. I left this question at Wikipedia Treehouse but was wondering if you could help. This is what I left on Wikipedia Treehouse. "I work on a number of pages, mainly political and historical and often in the libertarian, New England, Republican spaces. There is an article that I have been doing edits on for some time, since 2016 or 2017. I'd have to look at the history. I recently reversed an edit: although the edit that had been made was a deletion of a fact on the article for Ed Lopez, it was removed because the source is now considered "deprecated". I restored the original edit because even if the source is not considered 'reputable' it wasn't being used as a source of objective information. The editor who had questioned that edit has re-deleted the item and has, in addition, added 'notability question' template message / box. This debate was already resolved in November of 2016 and it was decided that the article would remain on Wikipedia. Since then, the article has included additional national news and sources such as CSPAN and PBS on the subject of US presidential elections. I know we make a commitment to accept edits as being made in good faith - but I am having a really hard time not seeing the edits here as vindictive and potentially political in hue. I am already concerned about sources that are considered deprecated and sources that aren't. Political subjects have become highly toxic on Wikipedia and elsewhere and are one reason I don't do a lot of editing. I think that his editor's approach is unfair and my question is who can I ask for some help: I don't want to get into an argument with another editor but I honestly take the edits that took place as being vindictive: "You can't disagree with my edit, and if you do I will one-up you and escalate the debate beyond the edit we began discussing." It's very hard not to read the edits that followed my restore edit that way. Any feedback is appreciated. As I said, the delete debate on this article took place in 2016 and since 2016 the article has been reinforced with additional secondary sources of substance. This is one of those frustrating situations I have encountered on Wikipedia too often where an editor seems to delight in anything but improving an article that has a place on this service we all volunteer to help build." The edits on the page following a small, minor editor reversal I made (the one that cites a Newsmax article) seems disproportionate. Could you please help with this item or providing some feedback on how to improve the article again. There are additional, strong resources now, it doesn't make sense that a debate on a minor edits has resulted in this disproportionate response. Grant18650602 (talk) 19:48, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Grant18650602, I reverted the linkspam edits... and posted a message on the talk page about the amount of "filler" in the article. I think 30% of the content could be removed and make it a better article.–CaroleHenson (talk) 20:08, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Carole. I wish more editors would take your approach, always constructive from what I can see in your work across the platform.Grant18650602 (talk) 20:09, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Grant18650602 I hope that you were happy with the changes after all was said and done. I attempted to mediate - understand - move forward based on what makes sense based upon the guidelines.–CaroleHenson (talk) 06:13, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
CaroleHenson I think Wikipedia is fortunate to have you as an editor. I am still concerned about some things about the editing process but your help was immeasurable. My biggest concern with these processes is a number of things I would need to make time to check on (but which I just don't have time to these days), e.g., I still feel that the editing that took place after I reverted a small change was retaliatory: it escalated from my replacing a deleted detail to a series of aggressive edits that included a new 'notability' tag - all because I replaced a small thing that I felt had a place in the article; the notability tag was unilateral in tone (because the 'notability' edit had already been debated); the argument for a new notability tag may not be in line with guidelines on deprecated sources (I'm under the impression that deprecated status on sources can't be retroactively applied, i.e., if the source was legitimate at the time of its initial use, a decision to categorize that source as deprecated afterward should not result in retroactive changes like the ones the editor in question applied to the page in question); the article is sourced amply (which makes the response to the edit reversal I had made a disproportionate response); I see potential political bias in a lot of these responses (across Wikipedia) (and in the sources that are diminished to deprecated status sometimes - also a broader Wikipedia issue); I also see a fundamental misunderstanding of government and political activists (the argument that notability should be tied to 'national' work is a bit silly, there are many state assembly officials and state party officials accounted for on Wikipedia, even municipal ones - which, incidentally, I noticed the article subject is elected at that level); and, finally, I think the case that an article's status should hinge on a subject's career advancement is out of character with the website (what do we make of politicians that are recalled, then - like Gray Davis?), it's just a lot of subjective stuff. None of the decisions based on these things had anything to do with you; I'm just airing concerns, I suppose. I think I recall starting some work on Wikipedia around the time of the campaign on gay marriage and taking up some items in that threshold. I'd planned to work on Liz Mair's page and had saved resources for it (I noticed you did some great work on that page) and had planned on starting a page for Tyler Deaton, who managed a lot of the campaign work in that issue. But it's difficult to devote time to this: it underscores an article by a libertarian thinker, Virgina Postrel, published a few years ago, titled 'Who Killed Wikipedia'. I've noticed a large increase in articles that are tagged with issues and it seems some (maybe many but not all!) editors advance in recognition and authority based on littering articles with these tags. A lot of these tags sit there for years now and the incentive to tag articles is much stronger in the Wikipedia universe than it is to actually take the time to improve them (frankly, you're one of the very few editors I notice works hard to improve articles - I applaud you for that). When I looked for Ed Lopez earlier I actually ran into Edward Lopez' article (different article) and am reminded of the inconsistency in these practices - I'm not sure how that article isn't tagged while so many others that are better sourced are tagged. I edit small things here and there and tend to work in the same subject areas. I think the Tyler Deaton article would be the only one I would have started but am reluctant to make the effort. It's a bit 'Lord of the Flies' in this kingdom sometimes! But I am happy with your help - both this time and in the past and also with the Mair article, which I don't see a need for me to edit after the work you did on it. Maybe someday I will get more ambitious here! Thank you, Carole! Grant18650602 (talk) 09:59, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Grant18650602, I feel for your frustration. Wikipedia is hard to navigate some times, and it can be difficult to manage disagreements.
My take on the situation is that edits were made in good faith. Sometimes when some edits are made, it brings new focus on the article. I had a recent experience with Defense of Cincinnati where the article had long-standing issues that I had not realized until I reacted to a minor change without a source. There was a much bigger issue with a lot of uncited content in the article, so I tagged the article. The circumstances may have seemed like your circumstance - that they made a minor change - and I stepped in addressing more issues with the article.
There are some people here that tag articles as a means of expressing their frustration... and don't want to tease out the real issues. In this case, the editor was willing to talk about it and express their issues. What they said made sense to me based upon WP:GNG and WP:POLITICIAN. There is a higher expectation, I believe, for people who are living - because articles may be created for WP:Promotion - so questions about notability come up for a lot of professions, not just politicians.
I get emotionally attached to figures or subjects that I am writing about, and sometimes I need to step back and evaluate whether someone has made a good point like a recent conversation at Talk:U.S. Press Freedom Tracker. Based upon their comments, I made major changes and then rolled up the article into another article because what they said made sense to me. Fortunately, too, they started with a conversation on the talk page. At any point you are feeling frustration, I think it's time to start a conversation to understand where the person is coming from. See Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle.
I wish you the best of luck. I think that you have good intentions and want to make articles better. That's a good thing! Thanks for being here.–CaroleHenson (talk) 15:08, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If the deletion has already occured, instructions on how you may be able to retrieve it are available here.

Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia. FireflyBot (talk) 13:02, 8 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

FireflyBot It was a workspace where I improved an article and then posted it back to the main article, as mentioned at the top of the article: "This draft has been copied over to Misinformation related to the COVID-19 pandemic with this edit.."
I thought that it's helpful to keep the history of major changes to an article. I have two thoughts: 1) maybe it's not necessary to keep the record of the changes or 2) since drafts cannot be kept indefinitely, perhaps it could be renamed/moved out of draft space.–CaroleHenson (talk) 14:56, 8 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Antoinette Bringhurst - Here's something I never heard before[edit]

I've been researching Houston's youngest daughter, Antoinette Bringhurst. She's referring to Sam Houston here, “He was a very compassionate man who loved children,” she said. “All of his children thought that they were the favorite. That was an accomplishment -- all thought that they were loved best.”

Hi Carole, I'm curious: have you been editing this article under the usernames "Hoodoowoman" and "ConjureWoman"? Carlstak (talk) 18:53, 4 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No, that's no me. I just have one username. I just made one edit to add a link through an automated process. It sure looks like there's a lot of progress being made.–CaroleHenson (talk) 20:34, 4 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it does. The editor Hoodoowoman is doing a lot of good work, although Diannaa did have to remove an excess of quoted content from given sources. The article is up to 139,615 bytes of content and 221 sources (!), with a lot of fascinating material. Impressive for what some people (not me) might consider a relatively obscure subject. Carlstak (talk) 20:50, 4 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Asking for neutral review[edit]

Hello, you recently edited slave codes. The article's section on the English codes and their continuation in the USA had a huge gap in time that was filled with this version [3]. It appears to have been subject to a racist reversion, so your attention to it would be welcome. Obviously the omission of Canada entirely and the deletions of US archives, Smithsonian and CBC references are inappropriate, but it's hard to know what set the racist off. British or Canadian scholars, not US scholars, should probably take the lead on that article, since US POV on it has been rife since the creation of the first US history texts. 99.192.40.68 (talk) 13:50, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I just finished adding comments at Talk:Slave codes#Confused, a subsection of the section that you added. You may not be too happy with my responses, but I think you have great intentions and would be happy to work with you, if you like to add content that is not likely to get reverted.–CaroleHenson (talk) 18:03, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Doncram, thanks! I would love to have a better map. I tried to find a map where I could use pin points, but I could not find a great map that would cover the PA, MD, DE area. If you know if there's a Chesapeake Bay, Mid-Atlantic, etc. map... that would be great! Great article on Earl School! It would be nice to further explore the "rare rural black community". Missing cite in Alice Freeman Palmer[edit]

The article cites "UUAW" but no such source is listed in the bibliography. It originates from your edits in February 2017. Can you please add? Or is it a typo and should be "AAUW"? Also, suggest installing a script to highlight such errors in the future. All you need to do is copy and paste importScript('User:Svick/HarvErrors.js'); // Backlink: [[User:Svick/HarvErrors.js]] to your common.js page. Thanks, Renata (talk) 02:28, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Questions: 1. How can I add the PDF's to the web so that anyone can search them, they are both relevant to GAF Nomad and are sources of information regarding GAF Nomad corrections. 2. If and when they are added to the web, can I refer to them as sources? 3. Massachusetts Air and Space Museum[edit]

Carole

You have reverted the information once again on our Wikipedia page yet almost ALL of the information you have in inaccurate. I cannot "source" the information as I AM the source. Please contact me at kyoung@massairspace.org or (508) 4234-2023!

Keith Young Director of Public Relations Massachusetts Air and Space Museum massairspace.org — Preceding unsigned comment added by MASM-Director (talkcontribs) 14:06, 5 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

MASM-Director, Please see Talk:Massachusetts Air and Space Museum#Recent edit. There isn't anything that we can do over the phone or email to resolve: 1) requirement for sources, and 2) there being insufficient sources. But I will clarify a bit what can be done.–CaroleHenson (talk) 16:44, 5 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Carole - I am trying to make certain that the public has accurate information about the museum. I'm not trying to make waves and am very flustered working in this format. I'm not sure what you require for citations of sources. The Cape Cod chamber source (#1) is accurate. The next two sources you cite are inaccurate (Guidestar and Fennick McReadie) are based on very old information when we were looking to operate at a different location. Source #4 (from our website) is also accurate. Source #5 (Charity Navigator) is ostly accurate but their site needs more accurate information as well, which I will attempt to update.
If you want to use the two sources I stated (#1 & #4), I don't see that here would be any issues with you updating the article on the museum. If you would like addition sources from publications, I'm happy to supply you with those as well.
Please accept my apology if I came across rude, I was simply frustrated in that the museum is still closed due to renovations and I'm trying to make the public aware that we are hoping to open by the end of June. This is brand new information and will go out in our June newsletter publication.

BLM[edit]

Hi CaroleHenson. In your recent edit at Black Lives Matter, you restored poorly sourced content by reverting another editor. You marked the edit as minor and didn't provide an edit summary for the reversion, which I think we normally only do in cases of vandalism. Is it possible this was a mistake, or can you help me understand why you reverted in this way? Firefangledfeathers (talk | contribs) 18:25, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

So sorry, Firefangledfeathers! I was trying to view edits on another article and I remember seeing that I went into the diff of the BLM article, but I was trying to backout quickly and get to the diff that I really wanted to see. But I must have hit rollback. Thanks for fixing it and bringing it to my attention.–CaroleHenson (talk) 22:11, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rachel v. Walker[edit]

Hi. I've gone round the houses on this one. So many authoritative sources spell it "Rachael", it makes you think that is the spelling. (I was convinced, and I'm sure I've spelled it that way all over the place, although I tried to change it back where I could.)

But then when you look at the actual files from the court case...it turns out it's just plain "Rachel" (!). Cielquiparle (talk) 18:42, 22 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ahhh, thanks, Cielquiparle! It sounds like the titles need to be swapped for the article and the redirect. I'll submit a request.–CaroleHenson (talk) 18:45, 22 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
 Done here.–CaroleHenson (talk) 18:54, 22 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks and sorry for the spellings...I should have searched properly to fix them all. Hopefully now that the freedom suit is online, the historians and their editors can stop making the mistake, too. Cielquiparle (talk) 19:12, 22 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rp[edit]

Thank you for doing what I'd lazily failed to do: search for the artist's name, and act on your findings. But that aside ... of course you meant well with this edit, but I have to say that you messed things up. Previously, the draft cited various pages of this one book. (Of course, it shouldn't have cited the book at all, but that's a separate matter.) Now it says that everything is on page 3, which I don't suppose is true. The simplest solution is to have one reference, in which the "cite book" template does not specify any page number, and to reuse this one reference, each time together with the "Rp" template. (You can see the system in use in, for example, Gianni Berengo Gardin bibliography.) -- Hoary (talk) 23:07, 27 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Great point! I will fix it.–CaroleHenson (talk) 01:01, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Done and double-checked. I haven't used the {{rp}} template in awhile. Nice and easy compared to a bibliography and short citations for minimal usage. Thanks for catching that!–CaroleHenson (talk) 01:14, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sam Houston Jr. MD[edit]

Here's a puzzle for you:

TSHA bio Born May 25, 1843, died May 20, 1894. Not much else is out there. But there are two different Find A Grave pages on him, Birth date is the same on both.

  • Dr Sam Houston Jr. at Find a Grave says he died 20 May 1894 (aged 50), and has him buried in the Old Independence Cemetery, Washington County. The date of death seems to be a typo from whoever set up the page, as the tombstone on both clearly says he died 3 May 1894. Added: 24 Apr 2003

The typo is only correctable if someone is actually monitoring that page. Many Find A Grave entries were mass edits from one place or another, and nobody responds. — Maile (talk) 19:46, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Maile66 The U.S., Headstone Applications for Military Veterans, 1925-1970 states:

  • Name: Samuel Houston Jr
  • Rank: Pvt
  • Birth Date: 25 May 1843
  • Unit: Co. C, 2 Texas Infantry,C.S.A.
  • Enlistment Date: 13 Aug 1861
  • Discharge Date: 3 Oct 1862
  • Death Date: 3 May 1894
  • Cemetery: Old Independence Cemetery
  • Cemetery Location: Independence, Texas, USA

From his Pension record, he also went by Sam Williams and filed for a pension in 1893. Bummer - no address on the record (to see where he lived around the time of death.) Heading for newspapers.com to see if I can find an obit.–CaroleHenson (talk) 20:17, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Margaret Lea Houston - Final years might be as much of substance as we ever know. I think the name was too hard to live up to, and he never achieved like his siblings. He seems to have died in obscurity.— Maile (talk) 20:24, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Maile66, Oh, that is sad. It would be hard to live up to that name. I can just imagine the kinds of questions that he would get.
Obit says he died in Independence, Texas, which is in Washington County: here. This is the same town that his mother and grandmother were buried.
I can keep looking, but it is seeming to me that he died May 3, 1894 (as you said was also the date on the tombstone) and he died and is buried in Independence, Washington County. I have no idea what "Independence Cemetery, Shiro, Grimes County, Texas" is about.
I think the late date could be attributed to newspapers picking up the obituary late (like the one I gave you is from May 23) - and said he died "recently". Well.... perhaps. That was an interesting research!
I am working on Sam Houston's life with the Cherokees and it would be great to get your input in a few days. I think I'll be working on it at least another day.–CaroleHenson (talk) 20:36, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently, greatness skips a generation. Margaret Bell Houston was Sam Jr.'s daughter. I've bookmarked Sam Houston's life with the Cherokees. — Maile (talk) 20:45, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, thanks!–CaroleHenson (talk) 20:58, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It would be interesting to expand Margaret Bell Houston. I am guessing that there is more interesting information about her. What an amazing face. She looks like someone who is confident and decided in her approaches... has a spirited personality... but has a softness about her so that she made decisions and talked to people with insight and consideration. All that from a face? I think so, it would be interesting to find out if I am right.–CaroleHenson (talk) 20:58, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Houston, GAC and FAC?[edit]

My personal opinion, is that you have done an excellent job on the Sam Houston and Native American relations, and Sam Houston and slavery. I am here to encourage you to put both through either/or both Wikipedia:FAC and Wikipedia:GAN. Both processes are a little backlogged, but I think it's worth your efforts to list them. — Maile (talk) 16:42, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks really nice of you to say Maile66.
I have been mulling that around. I have to be in a GA frame of mind to review - or have articles reviewed. It could be very interesting. It always makes for better articles.–CaroleHenson (talk) 23:05, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well, keep thinking about it. I once got Margaret Lea Houston thru FAC and on the main page as TFA. Somewhere in that process, I remember someone saying (sincerely), "I don't see that she ever did anything." — Maile (talk) 23:50, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh my! I am guessing that they said that after reading the article. What a shame.–CaroleHenson (talk) 00:12, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, no ... that comment came from a reviewer within the process on its way to FA/TFA. — Maile (talk) 00:17, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the suggested corrections happening at Talk:Sam Houston and Native American relations, I think this is an early indication that you're onto something interesting in creating this article. I've never seen this happen so early after a new article is created, even if it's nominated at GAC. Even more so when someone on the talk page mentions it as a possible FAC. Maybe you should keep that in mind, that once it passes GA, move on to FAC. — Maile (talk) 13:34, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Maile66, Okay, moving on to FAC sounds good. It would be my first FAC. I am familiar with what to look for to pass GA, but that would be new territory - and of course good to be aware of what makes a FAC. Thanks for your support and encouragement!–CaroleHenson (talk) 15:07, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Moral lesson: John Vanderlyn was an American painter who studied in Paris, and his life-sized
Ariadne Asleep on the Island of Naxos was one of the first large nudes exhibited in the United States.
Peddling the poison as well as the cure, this overtly sensuous work was presented to the public as a
moral lesson on the consequences of lascivious behavior. Visible in the distance is the ship of
Princess Ariadne's secret lover, Theseus, for whom she has betrayed her people by helping him to
escape the Labyrinth and slay the Minotaur. Ariadne's bliss will come to an end when she awakens
from her post-coital reverie, only to discover that the faithless Theseus has sailed away without her.

Shubinator's DYK Check tool[edit]

User:Shubinator/DYKcheck See section "Using DYKcheck" Maybe you already have this?

This is not a comment on your sourcing, but an overall tool info and might be good when checking articles for any other purpose. A handy little script that Shubinator created for DYK but is also sometimes helpful if you just want to make sure you left no paragraph unsourced. On my user pages, I see it's link in the "Tools" side bar. Click on it, and gives all the text sections a yellow background. The inline citations show as blue. Personally, I use it to eyeball a lot of articles just to see where the sourcing is. — Maile (talk) 02:32, 4 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Maile66, I added this script and I still just have one DYK tool on the list of tools, so I am guessing it overrode my previous DYK checker. I might have already have had this DYK checker. So far, I am not seeing a difference. Maybe I need to reboot to double-check.
I love the tools with colors - I have the one that highlights things in brackets, citations, etc. and that makes things quite easy for me when editing to ensure that I closed brackets, etc. properly. Thanks for bringing it up!–CaroleHenson (talk) 16:28, 4 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting a 'Sub Category'[edit]

Greetings @ CaroleHenson,

Previously you seem to have created Category:People who wrote slave narratives which mostly caters works mostly associated with Africans or African Americans who escaped from slavery to freedom.

There are few 'People who wrote slave narratives about Ottoman time slavery'. Like following ones

Though above ones are categorized in two related categories like Slaves of the Ottoman Empire and People who wrote slave narratives. Personally I feel to put them in a sub category with suitable name to know 'People who wrote slave narratives about Ottoman time slavery'.

Personally I focus on content research and writing and I would prefer you to help out in such categorization if WP Categories Manual of Style allows for.

Thanks and warm regards

Bookku, 'Encyclopedias = expanding information & knowledge' (talk) 08:42, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Bookku. From what I can tell, if there were subcategories based upon locations / empire, some of the subcategories would not have very many articles and I think it would be likely that they would be rolled back up into one non-geographic category.
I added the three people to a new section in Template:Slave narrative for the Ottoman Empire here. Does that work?–CaroleHenson (talk) 09:16, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thoughts on DYK submission?[edit]

Well done on all your hard work on freedom suits, Lucy A. Delaney and the brand-new and very important page on Francis B. Murdoch! Murdoch seems very DYK worthy, maybe a multi-page submission including links to Lucy Delaney, Polly Berry, Harriet Robinson Scott, Dred Scott and anyone else with existing Wikipedia pages? I am happy to add some facts to the Murdoch page based on recent reading but am also conscious that we are coming up on the 7-day deadline for new article DYK submissions. Anyway let me know your thoughts...I'm happy to make the actual DYK submission tomorrow if you're OK with it, as I am still relatively new and have QPQ credits to spare. I know there is still a lot of work to do on some of those pages but hopefully we can work on them in parallel. Cielquiparle (talk) 19:05, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Cielquiparle, Yes, if you would nominate the article for a DYK, that would be very nice. I also look forward to seeing what you have to add to Murdoch's article.
I have been trying to think where might be the best place to tie the Alton, Illinois connection between Murdoch, the Berry Delaney / Berry Wash women, the Scotts, and Reverend John Richard Anderson (article coming soon), with Alton connections + was a minister for the Central Baptist Church (St. Louis, Missouri) - with community work likely tied back to the subjects of the freedom suits.–CaroleHenson (talk) 19:11, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Great, good to know. I think there are potentially multiple DYK candidates, and that the way to pull it off is to have different strands so that they can each have their day on the Main Page. Will have a think. Cielquiparle (talk) 19:24, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Cielquiparle, Great, thanks so much!–CaroleHenson (talk) 19:26, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Friday (Arapaho chief)[edit]

Hi - Just to let you know, I nominated Friday (Arapaho chief), which you created, for GA status and it has just been reviewed. It's at the worst possible time for me as I have work commitments all this week, but I will get to it on Saturday. If you are able to take a crack at any of their points between now and then, that would be fantastic. Vizjim (talk) 06:33, 8 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Vizjim, I will take a look at it. Best of luck on your work schedule.–CaroleHenson (talk) 15:37, 8 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Vizjim, I went ahead and addressed all the issues raised during the GA review. I just noticed that you had not made any edits to the article at all to get the article ready for a GA review. And, although you have been online, you spent your time on other issues in the past week. I am not sure why you nominated the article for GA.–CaroleHenson (talk) 06:36, 10 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Simple, really - I nominated it because I thought it was pretty much GA ready, and the previous GA nomination I made took a lot longer to get to the top. As I said in my original message, the plan was to get to this on Saturday (the stuff I did this week was the sort of simple mechanical task I could do on my phone). Vizjim (talk) 15:23, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha. Thanks.–CaroleHenson (talk) 18:20, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Image search for JRA[edit]

FYI – Have been searching for an image for you. Found one (a drawing) on Ancestry but there is no information about where it comes from, etc., and reverse image search turns up nothing. The Missouri Historical Society publishes an index of the Stevens book and offers photocopies for $7 a page (!). But it does include a biographical sketch, apparently. Cielquiparle (talk) 16:53, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much, Cielquiparle. I found an image here and have been trying to find the actual book because there's a lot of good info there, too.–CaroleHenson (talk) 17:09, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nice! (Similar to the one I was looking at which looks like it could be a re-drawing of that image...which is neither here nor there.) Anyway looking forward to seeing the stats for today's DYK. Seems like each of the pages have gotten some attention. Cielquiparle (talk) 17:41, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Riverboats along the Mississippi River at St. Louis

It just has to be super short! (Also, Missouri.) Simple copy / plain English does better. And often it helps to give the reader at least one element that is familiar (so in this case, Mississippi I guess)...? Cielquiparle (talk) 16:44, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Cielquiparle, The hook can be up to 200 characters, per WP:DYKHOOK. I just need to drop 10 characters. Removing "the state of" brings it down to 197 characters. How is that?–CaroleHenson (talk) 16:51, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How about something like this (you know DYK syntax, you never have ALL the information so there's a bit of mystery which keeps it short but also forces you to click):
...that John Berry Meachum bought a steamboat for the Floating Freedom School and anchored it in the Mississippi River under United States government protection? Cielquiparle (talk) 17:01, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If you have a moment, please take a look at David Nelson (abolitionist)! (Also, I already nominated for DYK...if you have any suggestions for alternate hooks for that one, etc., or want to review... No pressure though, just wanted to marvel in all the intersections, also with your past input to related pages.) Cielquiparle (talk) 18:56, 20 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Cielquiparle Nice job! It's interesting and very well written. I am curious about the red handkerchiefs.
Re: the DYK - I liked the use of the term "abolitionist factory" in reference to the Mission Institute.
I have been thinking about a separate article for Alton, Illinois' history (beyond the uncited content in Alton, Illinois#19th century. I stumble across Alton when researching people in the proslavery and antislavery movements often and think it may warrant it's own article.–CaroleHenson (talk) 20:00, 20 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh good idea, have proposed new hook with "abolitionist factory"! Thanks for your feedback. Cielquiparle (talk) 20:15, 20 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello[edit]

WP is about to try something new for beginners, a "homepage" tab, you can activate it and see how it looks at the bottom of Special:Preferences. Appears with user/talk tabs on top left. Everybody now gets a "mentor" to ask questions, a wise (well) Wikipedian who added their name here Wikipedia:Growth Team features/Mentor list. I just did, and thought you might like to join the experiment. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:56, 27 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know about this, Gråbergs Gråa Sång, That's a cool feature. I added my username, too.–CaroleHenson (talk) 16:10, 27 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Change requested[edit]

On Template:History of slavery in the United States, please delete the South Carolina link to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_South_Carolina#Politics_and_slavery . I don't know how. South Catolina snould be in red on this template, because there is no article on History of slavery in South Carolina (and there damn well should be). deisenbe (talk) 00:56, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Deisenbe,
I don't know how to change the link to the state either, but the good news is that the link in the template is History of slavery in South Carolina, which is currently a redirect to History of South Carolina#Politics and slavery.
As soon as someone makes History of slavery in South Carolina into an article, all will be copasetic.–CaroleHenson (talk) 22:54, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Priyankamohandas (16:25, 21 September 2022)[edit]

Hi Carole!

I'm happy to be a wiki contributor. I have a doubt regarding a recent and the first edit that I made. i had changed the spelling of a traditional South Indian meal to reflect the proper pronunciation. It was reverted twice. Can you give me some insight into why this might have happened? --Priyankamohandas (talk) 16:25, 21 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

So sorry for the late reply. I posted a response on your talk page to keep it with previous posts on the same issue. See here.–CaroleHenson (talk) 20:14, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

NEXT STOP - FAC[edit]

Hot diggity dog! Congratulations! You did good on Sam Houston. FAC is a lot like GA, except that more people weigh in with their items. You handled these two Houston GAs like a champ, and you can handle FAC. — Maile (talk) 16:25, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much, Maile66. That's kind of you to say. I will start working on expanding the Sam Houston and slavery article when I can. So glad to know that you'll be along for that!–CaroleHenson (talk) 22:05, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
