Vandal warning/block messages

Man, you're really going to town reverting and blocking vandals! Thanks. But you're not leaving (m)any warning messages! That doesn't help admins reverting subsequent damage by the same users who need a history of warnings to justify a block. You could try the vandal warning toolbox to make it almost as easy as using the revert button, but it would be good if you would leave messages regardless of the means. --Kbh3^rdtalk 19:11, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Well, I'm not sure how it is happening that so much content is being erased, but if you use the preview button first just to double check, then you will see what effect you are making on the article before it goes into effect. If you want to verify your previous contributions, just click on "my contributions" (Special:Contributions/Gbinal) in the upper right hand corner. Changing the duration of a block

Hi, Can't sleep, regarding this, if an admin blocks a user while a previous block is in effect, the shorter block is the one that actually "takes". So if you block someone for a week, and then think you've been a bit harsh and decide to change it to two days, then all you need to do is reblock for two days. However, if you block for two days and then think it's not enough, you need to unblock temporarily in order to extend the block. It's also a good idea, if you think a particular block is the right length, perhaps because you're familiar with the history of a particular vandal, to check the block log (at the top of the vandal's special contributions) a few minutes after you've blocked, just in case another admin saw one or two bits of vandalism without the personal abuse, and gave a short block without checking, just after your long block.

By the way, you're doing great work. I was doing a bit of RC patrol, and every time I was about to rollback, I saw you had done it before me! AnnH ♫ 12:23, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

Range block

I noticed you blocked the 137.146.175.0/24 range after the user changed IP addresses so often (probably you blocked the computer lab of Colby College). Does this mean the individual blocks that you and I set before will expire earlier now? (which wouldn't be such a bad thing because the vandal has stopped using these addresses anyway). I'm just curious - I'm new to being an admin (and not an experienced vandal-fighter) and this is the first range block I see. Kusma (討論) 02:11, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Since the IP address that the vandal was using resolve to dhip-0xx.public.miller.colby.edu (where xx are digits), and since Colby has a Miller Library, it seems to me that he/she was moving from one public terminal in the library to another. Since such terminals sometimes require log-ins, a complaint to Colby might get our vandal into trouble. Bucketsofg 02:29, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Well, you're right about the verify problem there. I was looking at the new article The Differences are Fun Collection, by the same editor, and couldn't verify any of the book titles. (Tried Google, Amazon, and the Library of Congress catalog). Put on a "hoax" tag. Now the article says that the books are "self distributed". It looks like all the contributions of Starchaser65 (talk · contribs) may be questionable. There are about fifteen of them, linked to each other, and they include promotion of a band that has no verifiable notability, or indeed, verifiable existence. I've put a reasonably nice, but somewhat stronger, note on Starchaser65's talk page. If you wish to take stronger measures, that's up to you. IP blocks

Is it possible to remove the repeat vandal tag from the talk page until WP:BPP is decided on and implemented, given that your evidence on my page was all self-reverted within 1-2 minutes? I don't mind the block on the IP, as long as the collateral damage doesn't occur, and the tag will likely have the IP blocked once again very quickly without warning as it says, causing me a great deal of nuisance when I am at university wondering what to do between morning and evening classes... It appears to be a compromised web-proxy, based upon how it is interpreting the backslash characters,, in which case it should be permanently blocked. Grizzly/polar bear hybrid image

I would not risk keeping Image:Hybridpolargrizzlybear.jpg for the moment - this is indeed a case where our use of an image that appears to be privately owned could diminish its commercial value. In a few weeks, we will see if it is still widely circulating on the internet, which indicates that the owner is not bothering to enforce his right to exclusive use. Our fair use claim will be stronger if the image owner's laxity has already allowed the commercial value of the work to diminish. VandalProof 1.2 Now Available

After a lenghty, but much-needed Wikibreak, I'm happy to announce that version 1.2 of VandalProof is now available for download! Beyond fixing some of the most obnoxious bugs, like the persistent crash on start-up that many have experienced, version 1.2 also offers a wide variety of new features, including a stub-sorter, a global user whitelist and blacklist, navigational controls, and greater customization. You can find a full list of the new features here. While I believe this release to be a significant improvement over the last, it's nonetheless nowhere near the end of the line for VandalProof. Thanks to Rob Church, I now have an account on test.wikipedia.org with SysOp rights and have already been hard at work incorporating administrative tools into VandalProof, which I plan to make available in the near future. An example of one such SysOp tool that I'm working on incorporating is my simple history merge tool, which simplifies the process of performing history merges from one article into another. Tots TV vandal

I just noticed that you tried semi-protecting the Tots TV article for a few days. I tried that myself a month or two back and, while it keeps the Tots TV vandal off that one page, he just hits other pages. And the edits he makes to the Tots TV page are so distinctive, they are one of the easier ways to see that he's active.

In general he's a low volume vandal. He uses one IP address a day, occasionally two, and once blocked that's it until the next day. And he tends to be spotted and blocked fairly quickly because of his distinctive edits, usually by Curps. Given all this, especially the fact that he just moves on to other vandalism when Tots TV is S-protected, I came to the conclusion after my test of S-protection that it was best just to leave it open, keep the page watched, and revert/block him each time he returns. - TexasAndroid 16:08, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Block of school address

You blocked this IP on 23rd of may for 99 hours. This is the IP (61.69.12.19) of my school's computer labs, is there any way to block anon editing whilst allowing legit users (such as myself) to contribute? Also, 99 hours is more han 4 days!, this IP will probably always cause trouble, but can you keep future blocks to <2 hours or so (the time in the computer room is divided into 1 and a half hour blocks). There does not appear to be any consensus regarding this. Your school (or school district) has been constantly vandalizing Wikipedia for several months now, and something should be really done about it. Hi there! (I think) your last edit summary on this article said you were going to semi-protect it, which greatly needs to be done and I have been trying to get it to happen for a long time. Edit war on Bob Orton Jr.

Can you please try and sort this out i have tried to tell User talk:DaffyDuck619 to add a citation that isn't from imdb because there has been many untrue things on that website on the ortons pages and to cite and interview or article which he will not do. I have a very strong knowledge of the ortons and contact with one of them so i know the information this user keeps adding isn't true. Also this user has a history of adding untrue things to the ortons pages as he keep adding that barry o's son wanted to be a wrestler (just like his now adding bob's other son wants to be) when that was untrue as barry doesnt have a son but the user still kept adding it for a little abit a while back. Please could you try to talk to him as his also insulted me in an edit summary which is not the first time he has done that to someone his also made false threats in edit summaries before saying he will block someone if they remove his information which he does not have the ability to do. Green energy deletion review

I see how it was called narrowly, Idea I Think it was 14 delete 12 keep. with only a 2 person difference. It is Just that the 56 people who are using the Template (inclusion) were never alerted that it was going to be deleted so the Template never had a notice and so one day the template just disappeared from the page so few would notice. I happened to use it on a sub page so my less directly Wikipedia related userboxes are out of the way. As soon as i realized the template was deleted it took me a while to find this page because there was not deletion review. After i finally found this page I made an offer to Subset the Template. I received no response (But somebody fixed my comment a little bit). I Think in this situation it would be appropriate to reopen the

Susan Fennell

I've added two external links that include the information in the article and removed the unreferenced tag. I know that it would be better to actually footnote reference the claims in the article, which I will eventually do, but I feel the links are enough for now to be able to remove the tag. When I have time I'd like to not only reference the claims (none of which are controversial), but also add a lot more to the article. I'm planning on waiting until after the municipal election at the end of the year, though, to be sure she's re-elected.

Report on Secure sign-in for AOL users

Per your request, an update on the use of the secure signin. I got permission from the technical people at work to use the link, and they streamlined my access down to one extra screen and two keystrokes. I have used the secure signin a number of times, and it has been helpful with the apparent increasing rates of autoblocks. But, I assume you are aware that the secure signin is also regularly blocked by autoblocks and must be released by an admin. So, three times in the last ten days, I have had both "signin" systems blocked at the same time, as the IP numbers rotate. So, overall, I don't think it is a real fix of the problem. Generally speaking, no, we do not block IP addresses for an indefinite period of time unless it is shown to be an open proxy, due to collateral damage concerns. If this address is dynamically assigned, the odds are that someone else (an innocent party) will be utilizing it in the next few days or weeks after the vandal releases the IP. Hi, Wetman!

The long addition to the Michelangelo re The Artist - Appraisal.

It should probably be elsewhere.

I did'nt realise when I wrote it that there was already a page for the Sistine Chapel and another one for the ceiling- not exactly the same topic.

Problem is- what I've written (Hey, that the title of John Scott's book and an Art movie) relates to all three. I can-

• Chop it into bits and insert it
• move it to its own page.

Problem with chopping it up is that the Ceiling and the Last Judgement form an artistic and theological unit, regardless of the fact that they were done years apart, and ought not be separated. Also that section of the article links the characteristics and philosophy/theology of all three works. The only way to separate them would involve a lot more writing to put the comments on each in perspective.

I'm inclined to start another page. But In another way, I'm loathe to have yet another Michelangelo page.

Maybe I should just do it!

Canberra Grammar School vandals

I noticed this morning that my school IP has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia, and took a look at the previous edits students here had been making. In the course of checking it out, I came across Wikipedia:Abuse_reports/203.129.33.225, and noticed that the last comment on the page was that you were still attempting to make contact with the school administration.

Is the investigation still ongoing, and have you been able to contact them? I ask because, if you never received a reply, I would be happy to contact either the Headmaster or Ms Agnew in person, since both of their offices are a stone's throw from my locker. CampusNet

Hi. I left a message yesterday requesting that this IP be unblocked. It was, thank you. However today I found again that it is banned. I did some research and discovered that my friend (the monk) is on an ISP called "Watchdog" that blocks unsafe internet materials. It turns out that "CampusNet" uses this ISP, meaning schools everywhere in New Zealand, which would explain why there were various vandalism's happening from the IP he is on today. I imagine the ISP have routered many connections through a single IP. Is there anyway that the IP can be blocked, but he is able to use his login and overcome this? His login is "Vidyapati dasa". He rang the ISP, "alright, so they said that they have a cache IP, which is the one that got blocked, but also they have individual IP assigned to their users, but for some reason Wikipedia has only blocked the cache one...or something like that..."

Apparently they are using a non-transparent cache, which means that all HTTP traffic will appear to come from the same IP, while each individual user has his own IP for non-HTTP data.

Possible vandalism?

I noted an RC to List of Communists by Anon IP 200.178.22.27 and briefly reviewed the Talkpage and edit history. While the article is largely inactive it looked to me like the Anon was systematically deleting valid entries and the Talkpage comment would seem to confirm this. OTOH, I may be misinterpreting what I saw; perhaps the entries are being moved to a different article? If you get a chance to look into it I would like to know what you think. If this is vandalism, the Anon is being fairly subtle about it (note the time lapse between edits). PS - I did follow your earlier link to Wikipedia:Counter-Vandalism Unit, but as you can probably tell I'm not skilled enough to help out yet...so I'll just make more work for you instead :) Thanks in advance! Am I being obtuse to the point of obfuscation again? I need a warning light or something. What I meant was had I been following the Template:Major_programming_languages discussion, only to return and find it done, I'd have to do a bit of hunting to find it. Sure, I could look at the timestamp on "recently concluded" and work it out from the history. But that's only if I notice it go. If instead you linked the name in the edit sumary "closed [[:Template:Major_programming_languages]] - kept deleted" then I get the information I want from my recent changes. Anon vandalism at Pikmin

A long time ago, (March 11) you posted a vandal warning notice on the talk page on an anon user, 207.6.59.235, for vandalizing the page Pikmin. I warned the user myself after another incident of vandalism at the same article again on May 28, and here we are on June 19 with edits such as [11] this. Can I request you block User:4.43.46.13 for yet another vandalism to the article Love song? He has continually vandalised articles & I noticed your name on his talk page. If you are not an admin, would you be able to point me in the direction of one or tell them yourself? Recently had an edit to article Stevie Nicks reverted. I added a notable incident about one of Stevie's late '80s tours during the height of her cocaine addiction. A search of Google reveals quite a few mentions of this incident with the first hit containing an interview in which the interviewee confirms the cocaine rumor. Impossible, sadly, as it's not a school thing - the IP is used by the Worcestershire County Council and thus most schools and libraries go through it. violet/riga (t) 14:29, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

If it is brought to their attention, they should be able to deal with this rather swiftly, as they can determine which school or library is responsible, and trace it down to the originating terminal. I keep track of any that do it at my school, and it is dealt with there. However, we are talking about dozens and dozens of schools and libraries and I know that it isn't just one that is causing the problems. Your network administrator should be able to locate the source(s) of every edit by comparing outgoing proxy traffic with the time stamps of the Wikipedia diffs. It would be nice if WP:BPP or a similar solution were in effect, but at the same time these other schools and libraries have a right to know how their network is being used in the event they are ever held accountable. They really aren't that good at monitoring traffic, and are generally unwilling to do so. There are lots of schools & libraries that know that this is happening but are unwilling/unable to do anything about it other than blocking Wikipedia entirely. The counterpoint is that this network is being used repeatedly to post harassing remarks, and in many cases it resumes immediately after block expiration or block removal, and that perhaps we need to be a bit more proactive since there is a good likelihood that this problem can be curbed if brought to the attention of the right group of people.
