Xenia Tchoumitcheva page

Dear Cactus.man, I was trying to edit this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenia_Tchoumitcheva and adding "Myriam Girard Lingerie" under the list of brands Xenia works for. But unfortunately it has been deleted. I am not sure I understand why. What is the difference with the other brands mentioned there? I am a small lingerie brand and Xenia modeled for my latest lingerie campaign: http://www.myriamgirard.com/video.htm. You can also see my pictures on her website. I would greatly appreciate your help. Best regards Myriam myriamgirard — Preceding unsigned comment added by Myriamgirard (talkcontribs) 19:54, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but apart from being unacceptable promotional material, it's also a copyright violation. The article content has been substantially copied from this source. I'm therefore unable to fulfil your request. --Cactus.man 09:10, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear Cactus.man,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 21:14, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Red Pocket Mobile page deleted

Hi I got a message from Wikipedia to contact an Administrator and I selected you from the list. I created the page Red Pocket Mobile because Wikipedia did not have information about this company which is listed in the category under : MVNOs in the US. CAn we repost this page? Thank you. Deanywong (talk) 06:10, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your message regarding the deletion of the Red Pocket Mobile article. It was deleted under the Speedy Deletion policy, specifically CSDA7 because, as written, the article does does not indicate why its subject is important or significant. I would agree with the assessment of the deleting administrator that this is the case.
You are free, of course, to challenge the validity of this deletion at Wikipedia:Deletion review, but my advice to you is that would be a fruitless exercise and a waste of your own time and that of the many other volunteers who take time to comment on these reviews.
If you can find further information that does assert the importance or significance of this company, supported by reliable sources, then this can be added to the article. Should you wish to work on the article to bring it up to standard for inclusion in Wikipedia, I would be happy to recreate it in your user space or email a copy to you for you to work on as required. Please let me know if you want me to do either of these for you.
To avoid the risk of deletion of further articles you may create in the future, please read the Wikipedia policies relevant to article creation, including:
Wikipedia:Notability
Wikipedia:Verifiability
Wikipedia:Reliable sources
I hope this helps you better understand our policies regarding suitability of articles. Let me know if you need any further information. --Cactus.man 18:41, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Cirex

Regards. Hope you can help. I submitted an article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Cirex two months ago, is very simple, I think it qualify but is not me to decide. Help?Carlalune (talk) 04:52, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

Regarding your query about the above, the article was missing the necessary template to place it in the correct category for review. I see that a template was added by an IP user (not sure if that was you) but it still wasn't quite correct, so I've now fixed it for you. I also see from your talk page above that this was declined for acceptance on 24 March, but there have been a significant number of edits since then including addition of some new references, so adding it back to the list seems reasonable in the circumstances. Approval of articles for creation is not an area in which I work, plus I'm not very active on WP right now so don't have the time to check the references and assess it properly myself, but on a cursory glance it doesn't appear to have addressed the concerns of the previous reviewer, so don't be surprised if it is declined again. Take time to read the comments of the reviewer and carefully read the links they provide to Wikipedia policies which will explain in detail why your submission may have been declined. I hope that helps. --Cactus.man 13:16, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

File source problem with File:Robert Stirling Newall.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Robert Stirling Newall.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 10:18, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

HighBeam

Hi Ocaasi

I got your details from the Highbeam Round 5 Applications Support page, so I'm hoping you can help. I posted a question to the Applications talkpage, but it's probably not on too many watchlists so I've copied it below:

The watchlist notification states that there are: "250 HighBeam Research 1-year accounts available."
The application page states: "Because they do not have a strict limit on the number of free accounts they are willing to give us (they've initially authorized 1000), there is unlikely to be a problem of too many editors trying to get too few accounts."
Can anybody confirm definitively whether 250 or 1000 accounts are on offer in this round of applications? I've not been too active over the past few years but aim to get back to some content creation again. However, I wouldn't want to deny an account to somebody more active if there are only 250 accounts available.

Any clarification you could give would be much appreciated. Thanks. --Cactus.man 09:15, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi Cactus.man! Thanks for your considerateness about applying. There are indeed 1000 HighBeam accounts available (I have the access code in hand); however, 750 of them have already been given out, leaving the stated 250 number. I have not spoken with HighBeam yet about moving beyond the 1000 number. The same company that owns HighBeam owns Questia and they have just expressed that we can give out 1000 accounts there as well. I will check in with HighBeam about the 1000 cap, but you might meanwhile consider whether WP:Questia would be a good fit for you. It's more focused on Humanities and Social Sciences, whereas HighBeam is really best in my opinion for news archives. Do what you think is best, and if you think that you can put HighBeam to good use, then I say go for it. Maybe it will spark your activity level. On the other hand, if the general direction we've been moving in continues, this won't be your last opportunity to sign up for a free research database. I hope that helps. Portal footer templates

Hi, I've commented on your multiple portal template renaming proposal here. In principle I support the proposed renaming, but I'm concerned at the potential damage that may ensue. How do you propose to deal with the collateral damage that would be caused by breaking the many thousands of template transclusions to the various portals affected by the renaming proposal. I would be delighted to hear that you have a working and approved bot in place to deal with this work. Please let me know that this is a fully worked idea that will not break all the affected portals. Cheers. --Cactus.man 20:09, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

File no longer orphaned. The infobox was unexpectedly broken by an edit made by BG19bot --Cactus.man 05:59, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
Hi, this edit by BG19bot to the Robert Colquhoun page caused the infobox to become broken. Could you please check your bot for errors that may have caused this. Thanks. --Cactus.man 05:57, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
I sent in a bug report on this four months ago link and they said it wasn't AWB. Will re-report it again. Thank you for your message. Bgwhite (talk) 06:06, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. There seem to be a few infoboxes being affected. I did a very quick review of some articles around the Robert Colquhoun series of edits the bot made and discovered some more fairly quickly. Some of the changes are quite subtle and hard to detect, but introduce clear errors nevertheless (Robert II Keith, Marischal of Scotland for example). It looks like this may be serious enough to consider shutting the bot until the problem can be solved, or not allowing it to edit infobox data. Some sample infobox problems below:
Robert TollastBefore After BG19bot
Robert II Keith, Marischal of ScotlandBefore After BG19bot
River AlexanderBefore After BG19bot
I see you've been working on fixing some already. Good luck, I hope it's not too big a task. Regards.--Cactus.man 07:07, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
Bot usually runs in talk space. This past time, it was fixing a problem in article space and it has finished. This hasn't happened before when running in article space, but I won't run it there again until the problem has been solved. Thank you for your help. Bgwhite (talk) 07:17, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

Hello

I'm removing that picture from George Rodger's page because: 1. It looks too silly and inappropriate for wikipedia. 2. People might mistake it for a picture of the photographer, rather than a picture that he took, because there is no portrait of him, and that picture is at the top of the page. That would be highly embarrassing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ElliotR1 (talkcontribs)

Scotland portal

Hi, I'm sorry if I acted inappropriately by changing the article on the Scotland portal. I don't know anything about the discussion you have mentioned but I did try to check to the best of my, admittedly very limited ability - and it appeared nothing had been amended for a considerable length of time by anyone.

I apologise without reservation. I am still trying to tread the learning curve of Wikipedia. SagaciousPhil - Chat 19:23, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

No problem. The previous history of all entries is available via the "archive" link for each of the Article, Picture and Quote categories, going back to 2007. I try to generate entries that do not repeat previous ones, wherever possible, Skye was week 31 in 2009. The "archive" for each category also shows pending items that have not yet achieved current date status. I don't want to claim ownership of the portal, but it would be good if you could add any other items to the end of the archive queue rather than replacing existing ones, or discuss with the author who added the existing one first. That way any effort in researching and adding existing items is not wasted.
Good luck with your Wikipedia "career". If I can help you with anything just drop me a note.
All the best. --Cactus.man ✍ 19:45, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

file: Colquhoun,_Scylla mirror image?

sorry not used to edit/ contributing to wikipedia, but noticed that this file: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Colquhoun,_Scylla.jpg&action=history looks like the mirror image of the original http://www.tate.org.uk/art/images/work/T/T02/T02140_9.jpg and don't know what to do about it.

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 149.241.235.86 (talk) 19:58, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

It looks like you are correct, the current Tate source does show it as a mirror image. This is not the first time I've come across an internationally renowned gallery displaying their online collections incorrectly. Consider this image by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham. This was originally on the Tate website in the wrong oriention (90 deg counterclockwise), as advised to me by the Barns-Graham Charitable Trust who managed to convince the Tate to correct their online representation. I then subsequently corrected the image here at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Barns-Graham,_Linear_Abstract.jpg&diff=398291523&oldid=255042738).
Thank you for alerting me to this problem. As it seems pretty clear to me that the current WP image is wrong, I'll upload a new image to correct the problem in the next couple of days or so. --Cactus.man 22:14, 14 July 2013 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Hockney, A Bigger Grand Canyon.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Hockney, A Bigger Grand Canyon.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Werieth (talk) 19:37, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

Updating a wiki page photo

Hi There, I wondered if you would be able to use your wiki admin to update the photo on Scottish singer Emily Smith's page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emily_Smith_%28singer%29 Currently it displays a live (and not too flattering) shot of Emily taken a while back. I was hoping to update it with one of her official photo's from her website: http://www.emilysmith.org/img/promo/promo3.jpg

I'm her husband and producer so hopefully that's ok :)

Many thanks, Jamie McClennan (talk) 08:20, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi there, thanks for your message regarding changing the photograph on the Emily Smith article. All content used on Wikipedia must not be subject to copyright restrictions and must be released under an acceptable free license. Please see Wikipedia:Image use policy and the list of acceptable free image licenses. Looking at Emily's official website, on the resources page, from which your preferred image is accessed, there is a request to "please credit Archie MacFarlane" in respect of the images. I'm assuming that he is the photographer and probably retains copyright on the images. In this case he would have to explicitly confirm his agreement to release the images for use on Wikipedia under one of the acceptable free image licenses. Or it may be that the terms of the photographer's commission transferred copyright to Emily or some other 3rd party (eg manager, record label, publisher etc) upon completion of the work, in which case the relevant copy right holder would have to do the same.
Ultimately, any such permission will have to be recorded in the Wikipedia OTRS System. Please also see here for the procedure specifically relating to media such as image files. Sorry to make this seem complicated, but if the copyright holder permissions are not crystal clear, any such image upload is likely to be challenged and deleted very quickly. If you wish to proceed, I would be happy to help with an exchange of suitable emails with the copyright holder and submit the necessary information to the OTRS system on your behalf. You can leave a message on my talk page or I can be contacted via email by clicking the "Email this user" link in the sidebar to the left on my talk page. I hope this helps. --Cactus.man 12:49, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi Cactus.man, do you remember the source of this file/photo? The painting should be in the public domain now, as the painter died in 1942. --Túrelio (talk) 09:47, 17 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi Túrelio, re: your enquiry, I can't remember exactly but I'm pretty sure it was from the Tate Gallery website:

Hope that helps. --Cactus.man 17:55, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on File:Bidlo-Not Pollock.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. This article or image appears to be a direct copy from copyright artwork fails FAIR use criteria. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 00:02, 17 October 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for your message, but you are mistaken to assert that the image is a copyright violation eligible for speedy deletion under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion. The image in question has been in place in the article, with a proper and valid fair use licence, since July 2007.
Your recent edits have removed the image from the article which means it is now a candidate for speedy deletion under section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. I know not all agree with the fair use doctrine, but I was active during 2006-2008 when the issue was discussed at length on WP and we settled on such use under strict criteria. I believe that the image is a good candidate for use in the article to enhance the subject matter and assist the reader's understanding of Bidlo as an "appropriationist" artist. Therefore, I am considering adding it, or others, back under a fair use licence before the image gets speedied.
Please take a little more time to consider all the factors involved and do not mistakenly place boilerplate template messages on my talk page which give the impression that I'm engaged in copyright violations. --Cactus.man 18:31, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
All of the fair use criteria must be met. They are not. That the copyright image has been inappropriately used for a number of years does not mean that we can keep improperly using it. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 19:19, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
You are mistaken. All the fair use criteria HAVE been met, even for all these years. It's unequivocally a fair use image, a 2D photographic copy of a work of visual art that US law recognises as valid "fair use", not copyright infringement, and Wikipedia has endorsed in policy since around 2008, subject to provision of a valid and policy compliant rationale for such use in aricles. --Cactus.man 18:54, 25 October 2015 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Friends (magazine)

The article Friends (magazine) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Impossible to understand what this is about. Only one ref which fails to establish notability, only that the magazine existed at some time.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.  Velella  Velella Talk   10:43, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi there, thanks for the notification. I have to agree with your assessment of the article as it is now, that it makes no sense or is lacking in notability. I will therefore not be contesting the PROD. It bears no relation to the article that I started many moons ago, when I was working on a number of artist and photographer articles such as Pennie Smith which threw up oblique references to topics like this. I thought it was worthy at the time, but I can't locate my sources and they seem to be very thin on the ground now. Maybe a NN deletion is in order. Best wishes --Cactus.man 21:00, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Hello, I am looking for help in locking my departed father's page: Michael Masser. I am almost certain that an obsessive ex who has been cyber-stalking me is the one who keeps signing in from different IP addresses in Portland, Oregon, and a couple user names that have only ever edited the page in question. He is incessantly posting a link to my recent wedding on a page devoted to my father's musical legacy which is spam as it is totally irrelevant and also he keeps changing my name. Please help me stop him. My father is deceased and therefore there need be no more edits to his page. My family is in agreement and requests assistance in locking his page. Thank you so much. This person has a history of stalking me and this is apparently his preferred method now and it has to stop. Thanks again for your help. Ananymity (talk) 09:00, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

Hello, thanks for your message regarding the malicious editing to the Michael Masser article. I've had a look and can see that it has been placed under a month-long Pending Changes protection this morning by User:Lectonar. This effectively means that new and unregistered users will require their edits to be reviewed and approved by experienced users before being accepted and incorporated into the article that will be publicly visible. The process is explained here. See also Wikipedia:Pending changes. I think this will help resolve the problems you described.
Best wishes. --Cactus.man 14:15, 26 February 2016 (UTC)
