August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential! What's New? Off-wiki communication

In terms of the off-wiki communication with my mediator, while I can certainly appreciate Cerejota's reaction to finding out that something existed that he wasn't aware of, communication with the principals is an important part of mediation, and moreover, that communication should remain confidential. I don't understand what problem may exist, but let me know if you think there is one. Cheers, Tewfik^Talk 08:51, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

I don't consider it inacceptable, and in one case I held some conversation in email, don't keeping the fact confidential. However, that was because a participant asked for this channel. It can sometimes be used, if, for instance, one has suspicions he is unsure about, and doesn't want to share yet, or if there's a suggestion author doesn't want to be associated with him. However, I think it should be done very carefully and only with compelling reasons. The problem is uniformity. It's fine if all parties communicate privately, but, when some write in the open, and some via email, it creates a certain degree of mistrust. In some cases a high degree, so the mediator, IMO, must be either sure that other parties don't feel uncomfortable about private communication, or have really compelling reasons. I certainly appreciate your points, but I do believe that the communication does fall into the instances that you describe, and shouldn't be grounds for the mediator's recusal, especially being that (admittedly, I'm biased) we've made some real progress, and show signs of resolving the issue. Possibly it does. I just don't understand all of this. Well, one is free to refuse the mediation, and probably almost anyone from MedCab would leave if asked with reasoning, and if there were just two parties. But I don't get why would he ask for that - after all, it isn't that big deal. But, anyway, I start to think that something about private communication should be stated in our guidelines. Just a comment - Impressive speed. I didn't even see the blanked page - the bot reverted it so quickly it got replaced between page saving and loading.

P.S. There was an old not-even-started wikiproject with only a template which I cleaned to make space for a new one. The bot wasn't mistaken, I really deleted most of the page; of course it couldn't distinguish an article from an unfilled and useless template.

Into speedy deletion, as CSD A7, or Unremarkable people or groups. With all my inclusionism, writing an article about each victim of a war isn't appropriate. Just being a victim implies an order of magnitude less notability than being in any garage band. CP/M

I was one of the last users of CP/M on the internet, using Lynx on an Amstrad PCW. How are you using CP/M? Fred Bauder 22:40, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

Actually, most of the time I just use my workstation or laptop with Linux or Windows to edit pages, but I still sometimes work in Internet using the PC at work or an old Toughbook, with CP/M-86 (and Lynx as well). The actual reason I use CP/M is using equipment with old controllers, with required utils only written for CP/M, and sometimes ISA cards needed as well, so that no upgrade is feasible. But I still list myself as CP/M user because it doesn't mean I use nothing else (I'm not -that- old-fashioned). And CP/M is today rare enough to be noteworthy, though not as exotic as it may seem - it was very popular in its times... though, well, I really don't need to tell that to you, I guess  ;-). It's just like I don't decide what to write on your user page (not talk page) - despite it isn't private property, it's just commonly accepted way for someone to tell about himself. User groups have pages which serve a similar purpose. Also, mixing up first and third person is somewhat inconsistent. While it might be changed, the talk page is better for the discussion of major changes rather than edit summaries, and it isn't usually necessaty to implement changes for people to notice a suggestion. Hey, you seem to know what you're doing, so do you think you could take a look at Camonna Tong and Kwama and give me some advice for them? As my "pet articles" I'd like to develop them some more but I've got a case of editor's block. For Kwama, I'd suggest to put a screenshot for each section, and possibly expand the economic part, merge Mines section inside it. Also it would need a comprehensive lead, mentioning the hierarchy and importance of kwama mines as one of the main food sources.

Morrowind

I changed it because I felt that Morrowind wasn't of medium importance (ie notability), but rather was of "high low" importance. Additionally, it didn't get all that great of reviews. Well, being quite a popular game even today, I don't think it is to be set to low. The Low rating is mostly either for in-game details (all other 100 articles about MW setting), or for games mostly not played and not remembered. I'm not exactly familiar with browser javascript work, but it might be helpful to ask Tra. He knows javascript enough to write some tools, so I guess it won't be hard for him. Also you might ask Cerejota, he is a java programmer.

November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!) Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach. Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. I notice your comments on User talk:HQCentral. We have just discovered that that user was a sock puppet of notorious plagiarist Primetime, who was banned by Jimbo. Wikipedia:Long term abuse/Primetime, Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/Primetime As a banned user all of his edits may be removed, and as a serial plagiarist all of his edits should be scrutinized. Not sure about him being a sockpuppet, though lack of attention to some things may suggest that; however, the user was editing quite actively, and at times constructively. Seems to have at least some real good intents (edited his analysis of House Made of Dawn), but often fails to listen to others. Primetime has a love/hate relationship with Wikipedia. He adores the Encyclopedia Britannica and other printed encyclopedias. He thinks WP is horrible, yet has decided to improve it by copying in large chunks of text from other reference books while claiming they're his own work. Edits like this [3], [4], [5] are classic cases or plagiarism. Furthermore, it's been proven by the Checkuser tool. His combativeness, such as HQC showed the House Made of Dawn analysis, is also typical of Primetime. Yes, that's it. It is generally very uncommon for a vandal or troll to participate in mediation and even agree with compromises, but still I had a suspicion that he isn't the one who wrote the material (as he couldn't summarize it). Probably that's just so. I don't think he's a vandal, just completely locked on what he wants with little regard to others or to rules. However, some major edits would better be checked, as they might be copies, but not violations. I appreciate your extending good faith to Primetime. That's an excellent habit. However there are some occasions when it's misplaced. I and others have spent a considerable amount of time reviewing his contributions and finding the sources. Based on that experience I can say that he hasn't made a single substantive contribution of text that wasn't copied. When confronted he lies and counterattacks. Due to his infecting the encyclopedia with plagiarized material and bullying other editors this person has proven a lack of good faith and is no longer allowed to participate. Project news A set of five criteria for B-Class status has been introduced; new parameters are available in {{WPMILHIST}} to keep track of articles' progress with regard to these criteria. The implementation of the new naming convention for military units is continuing. The Nordic military history task force has been created. All task forces now have their own sets of assessment statistics, logs, and worklists available. {{Infobox War Faction}} has been created for use with factions participating in a war. A gallery of military related featured pictures has been compiled as part of the project's showcase. Several new category naming conventions have been introduced: All categories classifying military conflicts and operations by country (such as Category:Battles by country) have been changed to use "X involving Y" in place of "X of Y". For example, Category:Battles of France is now Category:Battles involving France. All categories classifying warfare by era (such as Category:Battles by era) have been changed to use "X of the Y era" in place of "Y X". For example, Category:Industrial battles is now Category:Battles of the Industrial era.

An effort is being made to have task forces maintain annotated bibliographies for their topic areas; several task forces have already begun to construct them. The project reached two important milestones this month: 500 active members and 30,000 articles in the assessment system. A military version of Wikipe-tan has been created; a new userbox featuring one of the images is available for interested project members. CP/M

I got a kick out of your user page... "This user contributes using CP/M." Is that even possible? I still pull out my old Kaypro 2X from time to time to play games. Man, trying to hook up that old 300 baud modem to the internet would be a hoot. --Lendorien 22:51, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

Well, it's not practical, of course... But CP/M-86, with drivers et cetera, isn't all that obsolete. I've got a laptop running it, which I have to use to work with some quite modern industrial equipment. It doesn't age in 10 years like computers, and sometimes you only have the programs for old good CP/M. It's superior to DOS in some aspects, and Lynx isn't too unfamiliar to people used to *nix. Of course, actually I mostly use a modern system to edit, but it's not like CP/M should be lost in ages. CP/M ^comm |Wikipedia Neutrality Project| 09:16, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

One of CP/M's main strengths, and a great attraction, is that it lies near the level of complexity where both the hardware and software can be fully mastered by a single human. If necessary, one might build a CP/M-like OS and hardware to run it in one's garage from scratch within a reasonable timeframe -- similar to World War I era aircraft or some other great projects of invention. Some of these are already tagged and assessed as military history; some are military history but not yet tagged and assessed; some are not military history articles at all. This huge project — working thorough 165,000 articles — is called Tag & Assess 2007. To make it manageable, the list has been broken down into 330 ranges each of 500 articles. This is where you can help. Just... adopt-a-range from the available worklists then keep track of your tally on participants' list. The tagging is easy, just follow the simple instructions. Afterwards, as our way of thanking you, you'll be presented with service awards and barnstars based on the number of articles you process. Remember... the ranges are broken down into sub-sections of ten articles, so you work through them at twenty or thirty articles a day if you wish. Project news Editors needed for Tag & Assess 2008. To coincide with the summer holidays, it will be gearing up from 15 June. As usual, barnstars galore! Partner peer reviews: for a thirty-day trial period, we'll be running joint peer reviews with Wikiproject Video Games. The idea is simple: we help with their reviews; they help with ours. This way both wikiprojects benefit from new reviewers and new ideas! We're notable: A new book, Simon Fowler's 2007 Guide to Military History on the Internet (UK:Pen & Sword, ISBN 9781844156061) rates Wikipedia as "the best general resource" for military research (p. 7). Of the military pages, he says: "The results are largely accurate and generally free of bias" (he also suggests people join the wikiproject). When rating WP as the No. 1 military site (p. 201) he says "Wikipedia is often criticised for its inaccuracy and bias, but in my experience the military history articles are spot on." A-Class reviews: the usual four-day review period may now be extended by up to three days (ie seven days in total) in the following circumstances: the article has no opposes but has insufficient support for promotion or the article's nominator requests more time to resolve matters arising during the review. Project news The criteria for Military history A-Class reviews have been overhauled. The new standard is deliberately set higher than before, and is much closer to featured article quality. The new criteria are: A1. The article is consistently referenced with an appropriate citation style, and all claims are verifiable against reputable sources, accurately represent the relevant body of published knowledge, and are supported with specific evidence and external citations as appropriate. A2. The article is comprehensive, factually accurate, neutral and focused on the main topic; it neglects no major facts or details, presents views fairly and without bias, and does not go into unnecessary detail. A3. The article has an appropriate structure of hierarchical headings, including a concise lead section that summarizes the topic and prepares the reader for the detail in the subsequent sections, and a substantial but not overwhelming table of contents. A4. The article is written in concise and articulate English; its prose is clear, is in line with style guidelines, and does not require substantial copy-editing to be fully MoS-compliant. A5. The article contains supporting visual materials, such as images or diagrams with succinct captions, and other media, where appropriate. The timescale for A-Class articles has also been changed to give more editors an opportunity to participate. The six-monthly Coordinators' election has been moved back a month to avoid clashes with the holiday period. The sign-up period will run from 1–15 September and the elections themselves from 16–30 September. The military land vehicles task force has been created. The new Milhist A-Class medal also goes to Bellhalla for his three ship-related articles: USS Mercy (AH-4), SS Pennsylvanian and SS Dakotan. The Contest department has completed its seventeenth month of competition, which saw an unprecedented 54 entries. The top scorer this month is Bellhalla with a record 120 points, followed by JonCatalan with 56 points. Current proposals and discussions The W1.0 Editorial Team have selected 1133 Military history articles for inclusion in the W0.7 test release. For convenience, these are broken by task force and you'll find a list on each task force headed "Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for [task force name]" on the task force talk page. You may nominate extra articles for inclusion or existing ones for removal. If you can improve any of the articles on the list, by adding references, or copy-editing, or cleaning up generally, please do so. A new discussion has started about naming articles on Soviet WWII operations. All contributions are welcome as we hope to resolve this longstanding issue once and for all. The debate over whether Milhist should adopt C-Class is continuing. All comments and suggestions are welcome.

Project news Following a lengthy discussion, three new coordinators – EyeSerene, Maralia and the_ed17 - have been coopted. The purpose of the appointments is partly to fill the place left by the retirement of TomStar81 and partly to provide increased/improved coordinator capacity to cover existing coordinator absences and to help with upcoming major projects. As a reminder, coordinators are merely editors who have committed to go the extra mile for the project and that there are very few processes that require coordinator input. Specifically these are closing A-Class reviews, and endorsing two project award nominations. Any editors who wish to help with the nitty-gritty of this busy project (cross-posting A-Class review, peer review and featured article candidate alerts; responding to member questions and queries, helping with drives) are positively encouraged to do so. A workshop has been set up to redesign and improve the newsletter. In our recent competition, a new name was chosen – The Bugle. All editors are welcome to participate, especially those with graphic and design skills! Administrator and Milhist coordinator, Nick Dowling, has changed his user name to Nick-D. As a result of the 2008 Arbitration Committee elections, Lead Coordinator Roger Davies is the fourth coordinator of the project to be appointed to the Arbitration Committee. The others are Kirill Lokshin (2007-2009), FayssalF (2008-2010) and YellowMonkey (2007-2008).
