Adding images to article[edit]

Hey, this is jcgoble3 from KIC. :) The images on Commons look good, although one was simply a scaled-down version of another, so I tagged that one for deletion as redundant (don't worry about it; you're entitled to make mistakes here and there as a newbie). As for trying to add it to articles, I see one attempt to do so in your contributions list, but that predates uploading the images, so I don't know what problems you've encountered since then. The best page to look at for image syntax is Wikipedia:Extended image syntax; that page details everything you can do with images. To add an image in the middle of an article, you would typically use something like [[File:Lew Brown 19 4-4-0.jpg|thumb|right|Caption goes here.]] which produces the image you see to the right of this paragraph.

However, to add an image to an infobox (the box in the upper right corner of many articles that gives a few quick facts about the subject), you will typically need to look at the template documentation for the infobox, as each one is different in how it accepts images. Many require that you pass only the filename to the template via a parameter, and then the template automatically plugs it into the standard syntax. To find the documentation, look for the name of the template in the code, which will between a {{ and either a | or the end of the line. In the case of the KI&MVRR, it's (currently) "Infobox rail". Then go to "Pages transcluded onto the current version of this page:" at the bottom of the edit page, find "Template:Name" where "Name" is the name you just found, and open that link in a new tab (not the edit or view source link, but the link on the template name itself). That page will contain the documentation; read it carefully to see how to insert an image into that particular infobox. In this case however, that page is rather unhelpful in that regard, but it does appear that it is the wrong infobox for this article, so I will correct that shortly (which means sit tight for a little bit). jcgoble3 (talk) 01:54, 12 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I've replaced the infobox on that article with a more appropriate one. You can view the template documentation here. For this one, if you click on "Parameters" in the table of contents, it will give you detailed instructions for each parameter, along with examples. The row of that table you're interested in is the third row. Read it carefully and try it out. If you can't get it to work, save your attempt to the article and then undo it so I can see what you did wrong. Then reply here explaining what you tried to do, and leave a brief note on my talk page alerting me to the reply (which will trigger an email alert, since I don't check in on Wikipedia much anymore). jcgoble3 (talk) 02:15, 12 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
