Some guidance needed on categorizing caves[edit]

I need some guidance.

You recently undid a revision I made to the Carlsbad Caverns National Park page where I added it to Category:Caves and the comment was "Typically general categories are not used when more specific ones are present".

Fine; but, I need a little help here.

Under Category:Caves, the tree looks like:

Caves 

   Caves by country
       Caves of ...
   Karst caves
       Gypsum caves
       Limestone caves
   Show caves

My problem is that a cave can be both a Show cave and a Limestone cave as witnessed by Carlsbad Caverns itself. And, many caves do not fit into any of these subcategories. And, some caves are a bit ambiguous. For example, Carlsbad caverns has extensive deposits of gypsum within it because it was formed by SO4 dissolution.

I don't want to move most caves into a subcategory and leave the strange and obscure ones in the general category.

What do I do with the caves that are not gypsum nor limestone such as a sea cave or something like that?

I think I would like to see all caves listed under Caves by country somewhere. Similarly all caves should be under Gypsum caves; Limestone caves; and other yet to be created subcategories. And all caves where the general public is somehow encouraged to attend without special gear should be listed under Show caves. And I would like to see other categories such as Erosion caves and Dissolution caves with subcategories of dissolution including Carbonic acid and Sulfuric acid.

I guess I am asking for some guidance in trying to categorize these caves and cave geology related topics.

Environmentalism External links[edit]

Your message to me:

Hi. Recently you added external links to sites such as Greenpeace, Sierra Club, EarthFirst, etc. These organizations already have articles in Wikipedia and it is prefereable use internal links to link to their articles instead of to their websites. Wikipedia really doesn't need more external links; content in the form of prose is much prefered. It would be appreciated if you would go back through your recent edits and remove the external links you added and, if appropriate, place internal links in the "See also" section of those articles. My response:

I see that my links have already been removed, now the environmental pages on wikipedia once again have no reference to the major environmental organizations and networks working to save the planet. In my opinion, Earthfirst! Greenpeace, The Sierra Club and the other websites I referenced deserved to have external links to their websites and removing these links was yet another step against saving this planet. Some of them do not have internal links, or the most direct way to get people involved with these organizations is to send them to the consistently updated external websites. I saw absolutely no harm in having the external links, and I get pissed when someone decides to erase the work Ive done that I considered a positive addition to networking the online environmental community. Breast cancer FYI[edit]

A link to NSABP on the breast cancer page, which it looks like you removed, is not really linkspam, IMHO. If you look, you'll find that NSABP has been one of the most important organizations sponsoring clinical breast research for at least twenty or thirty years. A lot of clinical oncology practice is based on findings from NSABP trials. Also, their website is informative about their past results and current projects, so that people with breast cancer, families of breast cancer patients, and the general public interested in breast cancer research would do well to be directed to that website for more information.

Environmental blog[edit]

Hi Burlywood. I understand wikipedia is not a directory of links and my aim was not to promote any website of any kind, nor alter the traffic ranking of the links. I know that it does not affect traffic ranking anyway. I was merely attempting to provide some useful points of reference to users - especially for the websites, which do not have a page of their own on wikipedia. These may be more difficult to find for wikipedians.

I have tried repeatedly to create a wiki called environmental blog. However, this has been removed each time. I have read the wikipedia guidlines on submission and I do not understand why. KVSSNRao - Edits to Industrial Engineering page[edit]

Dear Mr. Burlywood

I am totally new to wikipedia editing. I did see some pages earlier but did not notice the edit page. I saw on the Industrial Engineering page a notice to add references and that attracted my attention to the edit feature.

I added the official definition of IIE along with a reference to their web site page and also added the definition that I proposed recently in the Journal of National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai, India along with the reference.

Subsequently, I saw the list of industrial engineers and added my name there with reference to my blog. Then I noticed the provision for external links and added the Handbook that I am compiling in this area which is for free access for all.

In all three I am not doing any special commercial promotion. We create a concept for dissemination among scholars as well as interested public. A new definition suggested by me needs to be disseminated to the community for wide awareness and evaluation for use. The existence of the handbook needs to be informed to people for them to use it.

While I respect your judgment, I thought I should write to you to make my thinking clear. I am yet to understand the concept of talk pages fully. I shall once again try to make sense of it. With this beginning I shall keep contributing to wikipedia as I work on varius areas in my teaching activity: Industrial Engineering, Security Analysis, Mergers and Acquisitions, Management of Security Market Intermediaries, Research Methodology, and Financial Market Development.

I am saddened to see that you have removed our organization's links from many of the youth related pages in Wikipedia. We had only put our links under the 'external links' along with everyone elses.

We are just a group of high school students working to get the youth involved in philanthropy. (www.YouthTakingAction.org) If you feel that this does not match the critera of certain pages, then I guess you have done the right thing by removing our organization - as Wikipedia is a community encyclopedia.

The goal of Wikipedia is to create an encyclopedia. There is a consensus among editors that certain links are not helpful in that process and they are especially problematic when someone involved in the organization is adding their own links. my name is Ryan, a 1st year medical student at Purdue University, and I am writing in response to a notice I received when checking out the Wikipedia article "zygopophysis." It said that the previous user of this IP address was guilty of malicious editing of an article on manatees (?) and that the date of this notice was August 6, 2007. I am writing to inform you that the previous tenant, a Mr. E.C. Lik, has not lived on these premises for no fewer than two months; that I had some trouble establishing my own cable Internet connection owing to his failure to pay his cable bill for the last two months; and that his account was terminated on July 27th while mine was only recently instated this week.

The only reason I am telling you any of this is that (apparently) your message was sent to Mr. Lik's IP address, which is now *my* IP address; and so I would (a) appreciate not receiving any further notes about his bad behavior and (b) like you to recognize that any future instances of this particular IP logging on are me and not Mr. Lik (or any other people with whom you have had wikivandalism troubles).

I know this is little comfort, but I would remind you that you are not the only victim of Mr. Lik's; his abuse on Wikipedia has tarnished what is now unfortunately *MY* IP address; and the local cable company is also sorely displeased about the ~$90 he skipped out on paying.

elsevier spam[edit]

Thanks., I am working with this company, that I been in frequently adversarial contact with for years. We've cleaned up a good deal from them, and we will clean up a good deal more. Just let me know what you find. I know the senior executives by now, and I am working with them on this--they do not want bad publicity. Remember that not all additions of links to their journals will be inappropriate. As for the spam refs, i am simply patiently removing them one at a time. I've done it many times. External Links on Wisdom Teeth Page[edit]

I found your message a little hostile. I am totally aware of the "nofollow" tag added on wikipedia's external links, and that they do not affect pagerank at all. I was only adding a link to a page that I have written myself, and to which I have added a link to wikipedia. The content of my pages are not based on information I got from Wikepedia, like you have assumed.

Two years ago, when I discovered Wikipedia, I thought the site was so great that I have written myself new articles from scratch in other languages to contribute.

I thought adding external links was a give and take, even with a "nofollow" tag. But I find it very saddening that you see it so negatively that you threaten to block my membership.

I will not add external links anymore if you or others might perceive it as "spam".

It is considered an conflict of interest to add links to your own adsense site. Several editors have recognized this as inappropriate and removed them. Two have have warned you not to do it again.
