Thanks. I'm tempted to have a go at an article on Sweden and the Holocaust too. Ideally it'd be great to have a series of similar articles dealing with Switzerland, Portugal, and Japan which I know have been covered at some length in the scholarly literature.   • I prefer if my proposed hooks are not edited. Although it wouldn't be wrong to link Armenian Genocide and antisemitism in Turkey in that one, such linking may draw clicks away from the featured article. (t · c) buidhe 09:14, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
  • I believe the featured article is bolded. Beyond that, I believe it is our goal to aid the reader. With normal wp inlining. That trumps trying to drive up the click number, to hit some magic number.
Your second link btw was better than mine, of course.

Minnesota History

Want to say: your welcome. I think I have very nearly completed the damage I going to inflict on Wikipedia. Along the way most all the comments I have run into have been either smart, snide, or both, so yours was a surprise. I happen to know a little Minnesota military history so it was easy. Fort Snelling, Fort Ridgely, Fort Ripley, and St. Paul were the other Minnesota efforts. I would guess that you are a member of the Minnesota project while I am not. I will give this to you to share as you see fit. In editing Fort Snelling I came across the word Bdote. It is being used in place of Mendota. I used the word M'dota and that did not go well. After a great deal of reading I can not find that word or spelling in the historical record until after 2005. I have gone to the Native American Dept. @ U of M, reached out to the Shakopee Mdewakanton, Mendota Mdewakanton, Lower Sioux @ Morton and the MHS about the use on Bdote in place of Mendota and none have replied. The online Dakota Dictionary lists Mendota as a "secondary" spelling of B'dote. John March the first school teacher at the Fort in 1820s made a Dakota Dictionary as did the Pond brothers in the 1830s. No one is citing their work for the word. The MHS started adding the word to their signage at the Fort Snelling Park in 2017 I believe and now do not use the word Mendota. I specifically asked the MHS when the word Bdote is first found in the historical record. No reply. The use of the word Bdote should have at least a qualifier explaining its use in the Fort Snelling article. MHS has now published several works with the word in the title. Without previous publication I think the MHS fits the description of a self publisher by Wikipedia standards. The MHS has a mandate to preserve history not be an revisionist or activist repository. Another editor informed me that Dakota is a "living" Language.   • Mcb133aco, I'm actually from Seattle and have only been to Minnesota once, and I'm not involved in the wikiproject. I noticed your work because I keep an eye on featured article reviews.
  • As for names, there are alternate dialects, spellings, and orthographies for many Native American languages, and it's quite possible that the same Dakota word could be spelled B'dote or M'dota depending on the dialect or orthography used. I checked MHS (I assume you mean Minnesota Historical Society?) and it's definitely a legitimate institution, not a self-published source like a personal blog. Why are you deleting images in commons???

Those images are from Yad Vashem for the public. Also they were taken in the 40s! (which means they are under free licence anyway, since more than 70 years have passed since the pictures were taken).--Watchlonly (talk) 00:12, 24 January 2021 (UTC)
Watchlonly, That's not how it works. In most European countries it is 70 years since the photographer died, or if the photographer is unknown 70 years since *publication* (rather than creation). The militant organization is referred to as a "terrorist organization" in some instances. United States Department of State classified ASALA militant group as a terrorist organization in their 1989 report archived by National Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism. ASALA militant group is described as a "Marxist-Leninist Armenian terrorist group formed in 1975."

European Union Parliament referred to ASALA militant organization as a secular terrorist group active in Belgium during 70s and 80s.

CIA referred to ASALA militant members as terrorists and ASALA militant organization as a continuing International Threat in January of 1984. Terrorism Analysis Branch of CIA wrote the following sentences in their report on January 1984: "ASALA poses a growing threat to a number of US policy interests.", "... several West European nations have apparently reached accommodations with ASALA, allowing the terrorists freedom to pursue Turkish targets in exchange for promises not to attack indigenous citizens.", "The Turks have responded angrily against what they see as European indifference to or connivance with ASALA terrorism" quoted from the unclassified CIA documents.

ASALA militants are also mentioned in CIA's Terrorism Review report. The following quote is mentioned in Armenian Terrorism section of 29 September 1983 dated Terrorism Review of CIA: "Armenian terrorists pose a growing international threat."

ASALA's last attack, on 19 December 1991, targeted the bullet-proof limousine carrying the Turkish Ambassador to Budapest. The ambassador was not injured in the attack, which was claimed by ASALA in Paris. Since this attack, the militant organization is considered not active thus USA or UK do not include ASALA in their list of foreign terrorist organizations anymore.

The majority of the investigations in the Western countries where the attacks took place were inconclusive and the cases remained unresolved. Australian government told the media that they reopened their investigation into the 1980 assassination of two Turkish diplomats made by ASALA. 1 million Australian Dollar reward is offered by the Australian government for the capture of the perpetrators of the assassination on the occasion of 39th anniversary of the 1980 assassinations.

Yukon198, None of these sources say that ASALA considered EU, US etc. an enemy, or was waging a campaign against them. It is WP:OR to conflate terrorist listing with being an enemy. The infobox for Provisional Irish Republican Army only includes the organizations that the IRA fought against, not all the various countries that declared it a terrorist group. In this case, supporters of the move made more compelling arguments with more basis in quantitative data. Threshold for killing all Tigrayans: above 4 yrs, 7 yrs or 14 yrs? males only or all genders?

I think that the clearest evidence for intent in the War crimes in the Tigray War may come from testimony regarding the age limit above which to kill all male or all any-gender Tigrayans, but this is just my personal guess. The age limit may be ambiguous, but it sounds very much like an order from above.

You may wish to keep an eye on the article. It seems to me impossible for these to be only classed as war crimes in the long run, but whether they are legally classified as crimes against humanity or genocide will clearly be a long-term question that will depend on how lawyers, evidence and judges in courts handle the issue. Right now there's the "final phase" of the "military" battles going on, per EEPA, and there don't seem to be reports about whether Eritrean extermination of Tigrayan civilians is continuing. Unbalanced div's in RM closure

Hi, Buidhe, this edit, which closed the RM discussion at Talk:Feminizing hormone therapy, added a <div> tag at the top, without a closing end-div tag somewhere. The edit summary mentions DiscussionCloser v.1.7.3, and I'm not sure if the problem lies with that script, or how you used it. Can you look into this, and if there's a problem script-side, can you either ping DannyS712 or call their attention to this problem on their Talk page? If it's in usage, can you provide the bottom-template, or whatever it is the script calls for, so there isn't a missing </div>?   • John Maynard Friedman Thanks for reviewing at GAN! I think your review does a good job at sticking to the criteria while providing helpful feedback for the nominator. For example, articles should not have collapsed tables according to MOS:DONTHIDE, but this is not part of the MOS standard required for GAN (although you could have challenged them based on relevance). Here are the issues that I noticed that ideally would be caught by a GA review:
    • I think you should have checked the notes for original research and verifiability; I found some potential issues there. For example, one of the notes states without a citation: "The source does not name the son, but it can be inferred that it was Callaghan, his second son, as his eldest, Cormac, was away in France and Justin was only about nine years old and probably with his mother in France." I realize you flagged this in the review and had it improved, but it is still WP:OR, as in inference not directly stated in the source. There are other issues such as "His first name is usually spelled Donough", which is not cited and does not seem to be verifiable to a direct statement in a reliable source.
    • The lead refers to "Charles I's authoritarian governor", but the word "authoritarian" is not used in the body and does not seem to be cited anywhere. (Words like "authoritarian" are often not suitable for wikivoice either).
    • Some info in the body lacks citations, such as "Despite this family background, Donough and his siblings grew up to be Catholics. It is not known how this came about." "who could, however, not seize them as its power was limited to Dublin and a few other towns and their immediately surroundings, whereas Muskerry's estates lay entirely within the territories held by the rebels." In an article like this it means that there is no obvious source where the reader can verify the info, which is an issue for GA criteria. (t · c) buidhe 17:03, 27 February 2021 (UTC)

Drive coordination

Hi buidhe and thanks for volunteering to serve as a coordinator. There's no formal guide as to how to co-ordinate, so I thought I'd drop some notes (that you may already know) about drive coordination:

  1. Before the drive: banners should be dropped at participants in the last drive and prolific reviewers talk pages--here's a link to the banner from last drive. I'd like to include a line asking people to add themselves to this list for future updates so we can send it as a mass message in the future rather than manually going through. If people are already signed up or unable to participate (retired/blocked/etc), use your best judgement and probably don't leave a message.
  2. During the drive: check in on the talk page to answer questions, keep an eye on WT:GAN as well, and (something I didn't do super well last month) if you see new users wanting to get involved maybe drop them a talk page message with advice on how to do a proper review— a drive done right has potential to help people get more involved!
  3. After the drive: check reviews to ensure they are decent reviews (if somebody has done 40+ and is an established user, its acceptable to check every few). here's a table we used to help keep track of it last year

collective guilt

hi buidhe,

firstly, thank you for improving wiki pages about sensitive topics like genocides, massacres, and racism. i do surf on wiki frequently and i'd like to say that reading your contents is always a good experience. nevertheless, i strongly disagree with this addition (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Seyfo&diff=1009744952&oldid=1009675918). it is problematic in many aspects: representing a certain ethnicity as "genocider" as a whole is insensitive and to be honest, it is disturbing. i have never seen such a thing in other pages about genocides. e.g. despite vast majority of the germans voted for the nazis, we do not and should not represent "germans" as the perpetrator of holocoust or genocider, but instead we say "nazis". same goes for nakba (do we call jewish people as the perpetrator?) or we do not represent ethnic turkish people as a whole as the perpetrator of the greek or armenian genocide, but instead we say "ottoman/young turk government". it's because an ethnicity as a whole cannot be "genocidal". collective guilt justifies collective punishment and that's exactly the same mentality causing genocides which is also a form of collective punishment. besides, it is incorrect in many ways because even if we accept that "whole" sunni muslim kurds are genociders (which is not true), there are millions of alevi kurds, yarsani kurds, kurds from kermanshah, sanandaj, kurds from khorasan who had nothing to do with those massacres against christians. on the top of it, most of the allied tribes were not even independent, they were usually (if not always), under the command of others. there's nothing wrong with pointing the massacres of mainly kurdish hamidiye (cavalry) and its role in the genocides during and just before the ww1 (some scholars associate the mostly kurdish and tribal hamidiye cavalry with mostly kurdish and tribal village guard system), but the current wording has serious problems. in my humble opinion, changing it from "kurds" to "allied local muslim tribes" (mainly kurdish but also circassian, yörük turkmen, and arab) will be good. it is just wrong to call an ethnic group "genocider" as a whole.176.54.241.197 (talk) 07:51, 2 March 2021 (UTC)
