Removing vandalism or inappropiate content

Hello Bugs! I was just checking Double Jeopardy (film) and I saw that you removed an obviously inappropiate link there. However, you missed a sentence of the same vandal (it made reference to Ashley Judd's breasts). I removed it, so no problem. I suggest that before removing vandalism or content that doesn't belong in an article, you do as I do: compare the last version with the next-to-last version, just in case you miss something. See you around! :) --Neuroghost 14:03, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

Two more tips:

  • When you remove vandalism (eg Trey Songz) check to see if anything has been deleted as well as deleting what's been added.
  • When leaving warnings on user pages, eg {{test3}}, it's best to use subst, eg {{subst:test3}}.

Best of luck, Ben Aveling 07:02, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

Your RfA

To withdraw your self-nom, you can add a short statement such as "I withdraw my nomination because I don't have enough experience yet," next to your statement of acceptance. Then remove the transclusion from the main RfA page. --TantalumTelluride 06:34, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

Yes, the page will be kept deep in the RfA archives, but no one will hold it against you. You are a relatively new user, and you don't have much experience with requests for adminship. If you hang around for a while and become a trusted member of the community, you will likely be nominated again. (If you are nominated again, the name of your RfA subpage will be Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Bugs5382(2) or something like that.) If you do aspire to become an admin in the future, you should probably make yourself familiar with as many of Wikipedia's policies as possible, participate in the deletion process, and become involved in a few community projects. Administrators should be good at fighting vandalism, but they should also be well-rounded contributors of encyclopedic content. If you are seriously dedicated to Wikipedia and want to help by becoming an admin, you can sign up for admin coaching after you rack up about 150 edits. Good luck! --TantalumTelluride 06:48, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
Don't worry. And please don't feel discouraged about your RfA. You seem to be a very enthusiastic Wikipedian, and you've already contributed a lot of useful information to Wikipedia in only about 130 edits. If you continue to contribute regularly, you will eventually make some "wiki-friends." Participating in projects is probably the best way to make friends. Some of my closest friends are from Esperanza and WikiProject Numismatics. Then again, I've come to recognize some user names just because they frequently show up on my watchlist and the recent changes page. Just continue to use common sense and always remain civil, and eventually you will probably become a prime candidate for adminship. Please let me know if I can help you. --TantalumTelluride 07:12, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

New Main Page Election talks - your input is needed

A discussion has begun on how to handle an official election for replacing the Main Page. To ensure it is set up sensibly and according to consensus, your input is needed there. --Go for it! 23:06, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

Hey there! On the talk page of Untitled Batman Sequel, you stated that the information in this article has already been deleted. Therefore, it classifies as CSD G4, and I nominated it for deletion. However, what is the name of the original article, as I have no proof that it was deleted before? Thanks! SYCTHOStalk 19:35, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

Hey there....

Hello Bugs, It would seem that D-Day and myself are your admin coaches! I'd like to start by determining an area where we can have extensive discussions between the three of us. Do you have an IRC client? That might be the best place to meet and discuss, as it would allow real time discussion. If not, a user sub page might be a good idea, where we can list areas where you want to improve or understand better. Something like User:Bugs5382/AC. I'd also like to let you know that our talk pages are always open! Also I'm ready to start as soon as you are. KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 00:43, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

I think the Esperanza channel will suffice for now. I'm KnowledgeOfSelf on IRC. Would you like to get started now? KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 03:40, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
I'm ready when you are Bugs. Let me know when you need some pointers! --D-Day 23:10, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:Prince_Kuhio_Federal_Building.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Prince_Kuhio_Federal_Building.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images on Wikipedia is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. You can get help on image copyright tagging from Wikipedia talk:Image copyright tags. -- Carnildo 01:39, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Reverting vandals

Hey nice work reverting vandalism, I have a suggestion that you might find useful. When typing your edit summary, you can use an abbreviation of revert vandalism, (rvv or in the case of blanking rv b) instead of "reverted back to this version". The phrase "reverted back to this version" doesn't clarify that it is vandalism or a page blanking that you are fixing instead it sounds like your pushing a specific version that you like. I'd also like you to introduce yourself to D-Day if you haven't already. You are doing a great job, keep it up. I'd also like to know if you want to get together on IRC later? Just leave me a message with the best time, hopefully we'll both be on along with D-Day. KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 21:52, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

That's good! I've still been checking your contribs they are looking good. Two things you should try to do more, participate in project name space. Vote on RfA's, AfD's get involved in programs like Esperanza. Secondly a request for adminship might get oppose votes based on your edit count. You don't need to have 8000 edits, but try and get your edit count up to the 1500+ area. Remember D-day and my talk pages are always open if you need help. I'm going to give you an admin related scenario on that user sub page I created for you. I'll let you know when I do! KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 16:41, 5 February 2006 (UTC)
OK it's all finished User:Bugs5382/AC Take a look! KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 18:48, 5 February 2006 (UTC)
Hey Bugs, I assume you've had a busy week or two :-P. I just want to check in to see how your doing. If you have any problems with the questions that D-Day and myself have set up, let me know and I'll help guide you through! Thats what I'm here for lol. Talk to you soon I hope! Wikipedia Toolbar

Hi.

I've just updated the polish DTD file [1] for new version and I have some questions about new entities:

  • wikipedia.settings.tab.templates.changeparent (? - what is parent category?)
  • wikipedia.wiki.installcode (? - Intall code - how?)
  • wikipedia.specialpage.sitesettings "Site settings" (? - unavailable on Polish Wikipedia?)
  • wikipedia.specialpage.userrights "User Rights" (? - unavailable on Polish Wikipedia?)

Are the last two sysop-only things?

Sorry for the delays. I just didn't seen your messages (I'm usually on Polish wiki). I'll answer on the mailing list - as suggested :). Nux talk | faster talk 23:46, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

I am sorry; I have moved a different version from BattlestarWiki to Battlestar Wiki (a more correct title), overwriting your version in the process. I didn't bother with merging the histories, because I thought your version to be redundant. I have fixed it now. - Mike Rosoft 18:55, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

Reminder...

When using template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:test}} instead of {{test}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template. — Ian Manka Talk to me‼ 21:29, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

License tagging for Image:FBI Badge.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:FBI Badge.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 17:07, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

GA

There's no such thing as "premature" failing of a Good Article candidate. Articles should be fully referenced before being listed, or they can be failed at any time without further discussion. If you look at my GA history, you'll see this is the first GA I've ever failed; the lack of references (and the lopsidedness of the sources - almost all of the references are from fbi.gov) was too much for me to fix myself. Listing it on the unsourced page wasn't intended as an insult - it was intended to get more editors involved in helping out. Kafziel 18:30, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

I never said insult. Most of this was already referenced through the already referencesd sites listed. Why didn't you just cite them yourself? --Shane (T - C - E) 18:31, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
I'm not required to do that. I didn't list it. I'm glad to help when I can, and I often do, but there were at least 5 or 6 spots that needed references, and that's too many. Besides - I tried to fix it in one place (the clearance section) and you weren't happy anyway. Kafziel 18:36, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
I have reposted a URL to the clearance section -- See FBI talk page. --Shane (T - C - E) 18:38, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

See also

Here's a sample template for when an article has too many "See also"s. Template:Topics related to Hugo Chávez You can go to Hugo Chávez to see how to employ it at the bottom of the series of articles, tying them all together. Good luck. Sandy 00:18, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Re: FBI

In my opinion, everything in an FA need to be sourced. Someone who has the books should source them. It doesn't have to be the pages or anything, just which information comes from what book. Hurricanehink (talk) 02:42, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Everything should still be sourced. If they aren't, try finding an existing source. Hurricanehink (talk) 02:56, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
It's still in major need of refs, and work on the references (you can try Amazon for the rest of the biblio info). And, the references need to be diversified. You can't write an NPOV article about the FBI by mostly citing FBI sources. I often notice that peer review and Good articles let stuff slide that will never make it by FA. I also left a sample on the article of a fix you need to make to all the refs: the ref goes after the punctuation, not before. Keep going, you can get there! Sandy 02:46, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
Moving the list of directors to a separate article is a good idea. If you can add some content and refs, consider sending it for WP:DYK. But as for main article FAC, the stub sections still need expantion.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 02:49, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
I am not a specialist in FBI. As for famous agents, well, I think X-Files deserves a mention with their portrayal of what likely is the two most famous (fictional) FBI agents.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 15:25, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
Fictional depictions are important. And in this case, considering tha fame of X-Files, I think this show needs to be mention there.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 15:54, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Regarding major divisions and centers: you provide what is essentially a prose list or two in "Organization," but no real discussion. When were they formed, what do they do, are there Wikipedia articles? I can't tell at all from that section. That fails the completeness criterion for FA. You need another editor to run through and catch things like "respoinable" and "personal" (instead of "personnel"). I'd like to see it at FAC, and I know this is a tough process (my pet article looks likely to fail on one point), but I don't think this article is ready--at all.--Monocrat 19:01, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Commas: do you also do comma editing? Many are missing after begining phrases, maybe elsewhere. Thanks Hmains 19:52, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

FilmsWikiProject Template talk

Can I ask why you blanked the Template:FilmsWikiProject talk page? Any form of editing to other peoples' comments on a talk page, especially deletion of other peoples' comments, is generally considered pretty bad form. I know this template is turning into a pretty contentious issue, but any discussion about it is valuable and should be kept for future reference.

And by the way, don't let all this discussion/bashing of your template get you down. As I think I mentionned during the discussion, the Project banner is like our ambassador to the world; it's the first introduction most people are going to have to the project, and so I think we all just want to make sure it's as good as it possibly can be. Please, enjoy this piece of pie during the negociations. --Gpollock 04:00, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

WP:AIV listing of 87.65.186.9

Hi Shane, your listing of 87.65.186.9 at WP:AIV wasn't really appropriate since this was clearly not a vandal and that IP had not been issued with the appropriate warning template. Please avoid listing non-vandalism incidents as WP:AIV. If you want an admin to investigate something that is not vandalism, WP:AN or WP:ANI are more appropriate forums. Boy Scouts of America membership controversies

Hi, saw that you strongly oppose the FAC for the BSA controversy page. From the criteria you listed, I get the feeling that you regard the article as generally too long? I take it you regard the table of contents as overwhelming rather than insubstantial? And does that mean you think the contents themselves are overwhelming, or that the actual table of contents itself is just too long and should be replaced with a custom.

Do you have any suggestions for how we could improve the article in order to meet you concerns? One tension within the article is that our topic is narrow enough as it, but at the same time, I assume you think it's running long? What parts of the article do you think we should do without / split off to other articles? Thanks for your feedback on all this-- with your help, we'll make this a great article yet! :)

Images in signatures

I've recently been given a good reason that images in signatures are discouraged: They make image maintenance very difficult. Have a read of the guideline, look at the straw pool to get a feel for what the man on the street thinks, and then have a look at the examples given in the later discussion to see what I mean. - brenneman {L} 10:46, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

RE: TribalWar

Shane, you know for a fact your proposed deletion is due to your bias and vendetta against the TribalWar community. Nothing in my comment was a personal attack but a simple mention of your opposition to the community, which should not be taken into consideration when discussing the TribalWar Wiki. You are clearly abusing what meager powers you have here at Wikipedia to "stick it to" TribalWar. Fboftwfame 04:40, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
