Additions to the Jewel of Muscat article

Hi

As you must be aware now there are some problems with the text you are trying to add to the article.

I hope I can help you to understand what those problems are and how we might overcome them.

The first thing is that any material not relevant to the Jewel of Muscat should not be in there. At the moment I am trying to research exactly what the Tang ship should be called so that I can properly create a page for it. The other thing is that as soon as I do that there will be trouble ! lol.

Anyway, I will have created a page in the next hour or so and then we can move the material to the correct place.

I am going to move the non relevant bits to a new page User:Chaosdruid/sandbox for now.

First of all lets address some standard article issues:

• Internal links, like [[this]], only need to be linked once in an article this small.
• Names, such as Fred Bloggs, are given in full once and after that only the surname is used to refer to them. Even if Bloggs was mentioned a few times it will still be Bloggs.
• References must be included, there is a minimum recommended - one per paragraph but, in cases such as this, two or even three would be expected due to the amount of information.

Most of these points are covered in the above "welcome" that I gave you, particularly the 5 pillars and the how to write an article. If you have any further questions on those matters feel free to contact me or any other editors. If you need urgent help you can place a {{help me}} template on this page and someone will come to your rescue fairly quickly.

Also:

• Cleverly wording the article to slowly drag the reader into something which is off topic is not good. You have cunningly used the Arab dhow, the shipwreck and then the treasure inside to allow you to say "and it is on display at" to get the mention of the, I suspect more your, museum in.

Anyway the material has been assimilated, no I am not Borg!, onto the other page and only the relevant material to the Jewel has been left on the Jewel page.

I will let you know once I have posted the wreck article - it needs a little work though before I can do that. Chaosdruid (talk) 23:13, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

Copyright violations

I have deleted a lot of material from the three pages.

Wikipedia cannot tolerate what we call WP:COPYVIO. Plagiarism is similar to copyvios and means when text is almost entirely copied, changing a few words in a copied sentence etc.

I have taken no further action as I can see that you are a new editor.

Hopefully you understand my actions and reasoning. I hope that we can continue to get the articles completed and to a high standard.

Hi

I got your email and will try and explain more.

Unless the material is not copyrighted or is made free under a licence such as GNU or CC licence then we cannot use it on Wikipedia pages. Plagarism is when material is copied over and a few words are changed, such material is almost the same as copyright violations material and is treated as such.

As the material on the three pages was directly copied from the site and copyrighted by the website I had to remove it and start again.

1 you keep saying "the material" is (C) but you never state "which" material and from where you seem to think it came from?

2 please be more specific... did it ever occur to you that "I/we" might be the owner of the (C)???

4 I understand that you think you're doing "what's best" but you act without first communicating effectively... you should first investigate, then communicate your findings, discuss and THEN act..

5 in a friendly and cooperative, I ask you all of this...

1 The material was everything in the article which all came from a website which was copyrighted by the website

2 It does not matter whether you/you are the owner - it came from a copyright website and you know that or you would not be saying "I/we might be the owner"

If you want to use material that is registered as copyright you must send in emails to wikipedia saying so. Even then the material was a press release and not really about the articles titles. The material was about the Tang treasure and its world tour and should have been on a different page. The Xperiential and ArtScience museums pages should have been about the museums with a small entry about the displays. Importantly wikipedia does not really use material which has not happened yet. Forthcoming events may be cancelled etc.

3 Yes I did and it still makes no difference - it was from a copyrighted website.

4 I am not doing "what's best" I was removing copyright material which was a copyright violation.

Copyright violations are to be removed immediately, especially when it is plastered onto three different pages. I would have gone for a copyvio template but that is really for when further investigation is needed, which was not needed in this case as the entire content of the page was from another website.

5 Telling me to "think before I act" is not friendly or cooperative.

Please do not communicate by email on this matter there is no need, as discussing here or the article talk page is fine, and I do not check it regularly and it may go unread for days or even weeks.

Read the policies and then communicate what I did that is not covered by those policies. We can discuss that and then act upon it, there will be nothing to act upon though as the material was in direct violation of a websites copyright on their material.
