Nice job on the new photos, Brian. Great week-end for photography.

I took some photos at Blennerhassett Island this week-end. I will try to get them posted soon.
I think the list is ready for nomination, but I'll leave it up to you to decide for now. I won't be able to help defend a nomination for a few days (I'll be out of town 6 of the next 8 days.) WVhybrid (talk) 03:47, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
OK. Let's hold off on the nomination until you return. Brian Powell (talk) 13:44, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
I'm back in Wild, Wonderful WV. Have you ever looked at List of Pennsylvania State Parks? Based on that article, we may have more work to do on the WV list. What do you think of the "Template:State parks of Pennsylvania map"?
One thing in the Manual of Style (main page) is the statement: "Using color alone to convey information (color coding) should not be done". I wonder if that means the color coding for the should have some sort of backup code for folks that can't see the color? An ideas?
I will keep trying to finish the red links in the protected area template. But I'm pretty sure it will take me a while.
One final point, Brian, then I'm finished. Have you noticed someone adding a bunch of acronyms to the state parks? Do you have an opinion? WVhybrid (talk) 04:03, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
I like the PA map with the wikilinks to each park. Their map has the points manually set for each park using relative X/Y positions. When I have a chance I might poke around to see if there is a cleaner way of doing this by specifying lat/long coordinates.
I'm not too concerned about the color-coding for the region. We're already listing the counties for each park, which is more granular information than just the general region. The color-coding provides general at-a-glance type info.
Which parks are you seeing with the acronyms? Blackwater Falls had this previously, I know. LightBot is going through and changing the km part of the convert templates, but that is just a general cleanup. Brian Powell (talk) 13:03, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
I've found the acronyms at Canaan and Blackwater SPs, and at the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge. The histories show the changes were made by an IP that I think is associated with User:Valerius Tygart‎. I left a note on one of the article talk pages, but didn't get a response.
I think it is time to submit the SP list for peer review. I will submit it later tonight, with a note that your were a significant contributor to the list. After we work through the feedback, you are still welcome to submit the article for featured status. WVhybrid (talk) 01:56, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
Sounds good. Brian Powell (talk) 02:10, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
I posted the peer review request. So far there hasn't been a lot of action. (And I didn't keep my promise to mention your contribution.. Sorry. No excuse.)WVhybrid (talk) 04:38, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
Some good comments were posted on the peer review page: Wikipedia:Peer review/List of West Virginia state parks/archive1. You might want to check them out (as well as my replies).WVhybrid (talk) 04:32, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
I could go either way on the background colors. Making the list sortable doesn't really make much sense, though. At some point I' like to do a wikilinked-map like Pennsylvania has, but it might be a little while before I have a chance to figure out a decent way of accomplishing this.
At some point, we should probably also add some stuff on the former Mont Cheateau State Park on Cheat Lake (lodge now houses WVU BBER) and split out the former Grandview State Park rather than just redirecting to New River Gorge NR. 04:44, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
Regarding the map, could we write an algorithm that turned the long/lat into x/y coordinates? Then just plug the equations into Excel, then port the x/y's into the map per the PA list? It's going to rain this week-end, maybe I can make that my week-end goal.
I recall going to the state science fair about 1970 at Mont Cheateau, but I don't remember it being a state park. Can you dig up some references on its SP period?
The DNR map got robo deleted last night from wikipeidia a few minutes after I deleted it from the list..... WVhybrid (talk) 12:06, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
Just to get something up there, the Excel spreadsheet for coords might be the best way to go. Eventually it'd be nice to have something that auto-figured the x/y based on lat/long. I'll poke around and see how Geobox is doing this.
I've tried looking at various points and haven't been able to find out much about Mont Chateau. I have seen articles saying it was a state park, but I guess it never quite took off or something. Some quick Google searches last night weren't really coming up with much. I may need to go to the WVU Libraries WV history collection sometime and do some digging. Brian Powell (talk) 13:53, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
I tested expanding the thumbnails to 125 x 125. Let me know what you think. You can check it out at User:WVhybrid/My own sandbox.
One suggestion from the peer review was to add the establishment date to each park.... Maybe you can find a "History of WV State Parks" in the WVU library system. I don't think its in the Kanawha County Library WVhybrid (talk) 02:25, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
Well, this is a night for eating my words. I found a book title "Where people and nature meet: A history of the West Virginia state parks" on Amazon for $10, so I ordered it. We will see if that helps with the lead and some dates.
Good find on the Mont Chateau reference.WVhybrid (talk) 03:20, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
The thumbnails look OK either way. I personally don't necessarily see what the big deal is with the size.
The book you mentioned sounds vaguely familiar. There is one circulating copy of it at WVU Libraries. I'll try to get it tomorrow. I don't know if you have it, but I wonder if the WV Encyclopedia that was released about 2 years ago might have some data. I'll see if I can find a copy of that as well.
I'll head out to Cheat Lake some evening here and grab photos of the old Mont Chateau lodge. While I don't think they're worth trying to get, I do remember from a hike a couple years ago that there are some older trail signs at Coopers Rock referencing Mont Chateau. Brian Powell (talk) 03:34, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
I started the park locator map. Check out User:WVhybrid/Temporary sandbox M
WVhybrid (talk) 02:34, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
It looks good, but maybe we should make the dots a big larger? They're hard to see and click on currently. Brian Powell (talk) 03:05, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
Sure, bigger dots would be okay with me. Do you have any? I'll try testing the dot used on the infobox, but I suspect something in between those two sizes would work better.WVhybrid (talk) 12:52, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
I tested increasing the dot size from 5 pixels to 7 pixels. I found that I needed to subtract two pixels from the dot X/Y location to correctly reposition the dot on the map.
Brian, I don't have a good understanding of the CSS "language", so I can't tell which style= section needs to be increase to 7 x 7 to increase the click area. Can you look at the coding and figure that out (and explain it to me?). Thanks.WVhybrid (talk) 13:32, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
I tweaked the settings for Audra State Park in your map. Take a look and see if you like that one. Brian Powell (talk) 15:20, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
I see the tweak, and without it there are a couple pixels that click thru to "Image:red pog.svg". Can you explain what the changes are doing, and why you had to do it twice?WVhybrid (talk) 15:31, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
I finished the map and created the template. You can check it out at the same sandbox.WVhybrid (talk) 12:14, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
Looks good. Brian Powell (talk) 14:37, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
I tried installing the locator map near the top of the article, but with little luck. We are going to need a longer lead before the locator map can fit easily on the page.WVhybrid (talk) 23:55, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
The Where People and Nature Meet book has a lot of historical information on the development of the park system. We should be able to come up with data there to expand the introduction. Brian Powell (talk) 00:11, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
My copy is in the mail. I will be out of time until Saturday. If you want to try to locate the map in the article, here is a copy:
Map of State Parks of West Virginia

WVhybrid (talk) 01:35, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
Here is my latest question... The command "include.../noinclue" doesn't seem to be working on the last line of the template code. The code seems to me to be exactly like the Pennsy. code, but works differently... The result is the articles the template is inserted into end up in the template category... So, if you would like a challenge, please take a look.WVhybrid (talk) 00:14, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Found it! The problem wasn't in the template, but the code I copied into the file... arrghhhhhh.
Another question. I know the changing the size of the thumbnails doesn't seem interest you, but I think going from 100 pixels to 125 pixels will improve the table. Would you mind replacing the Droop Mountain and the Moncove Lake -squares photo files with 125 pixel images (or, I'll do it if you want.)
My copy of the SP book came. I'll try to rewrite the lead in the next couple of days. Please edit with boldness. B-) WVhybrid (talk) 00:40, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Brightened up your photo...

Hope you don't mind [1]. Revert if you don't like the new version... ATren (talk) 01:10, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

I finally took care of this. --NE2 21:08, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Cool. Brian Powell (talk) 13:15, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

Cropped Images

Brian, I've uploaded cropped full-size copies of the Droop Mountain and Moncove Lake images. I think they look better on the resized thumbnails on the list page. Hope you are having a nice Independence Day week-end.WVhybrid (talk) 17:30, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

Looks good. Sorry about not being able to get to this earlier. Brian Powell (talk) 13:15, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
Good to hear from you. I think the page is in pretty good shape, except for the lead. Any good ideas?
I've also archived a few of the references. I'm thinking of archiving some more in the next few days, so that all the web refs except the state park refs are archived.
WVhybrid (talk) 04:35, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Indian Creek WMA

I noticed that Indian Creek WMA is pretty close to Morgantown. Next time you have a spare hour, why don't you run out to Indian Creek and snap a pix for the article? WVhybrid (talk) 16:09, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I've been meaning to do that. I might try to dodge the raindrops later today and head over there. Brian Powell (talk) 16:23, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Nikon D60

Hi, I took the liberty to upload your image Image:Nikon D60.jpg to commons. here's a direct link. Thanks, Theo (talk) 17:40, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Image:Prickett's Fort.jpg is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:Image:Prickett's Fort.jpg. Commons is a repository of free media that can be used on all MediaWiki wiki's. The image(s) will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. You can embed an image uploaded to Commons like you would an image uploaded to Wikipedia, in this case: [[Image:Prickett's Fort.jpg]]. Panther

What was all that about? Wait, don't tell me. I'll only be disappointed (again)!

I'll revise the article. WVhybrid (talk) 01:58, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
I just happened to notice the change on a mailing I got from WV State Parks yesterday. I tried looking but couldn't find any press releases from either WVDNR or Forestry, anything in the Charleston or Bluefield newspapers, or anything from the state legislature.
Taking a wild guess, I wonder if this might have something to do with the lease non-renewal last year that caused Berwind Lake WMA to drop from like 18,000 acres to about 100 acres. Maybe this is to make up for that somehow? Brian Powell (talk) 03:48, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
It may have something to do with how the state forests are managed these days as if they were state parks. WVhybrid (talk) 00:42, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Photosynth

Interesting idea. I had never heard of the product. Too bad the photos were so poor for the monument.WVhybrid (talk) 03:47, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I know. I debated about stripping it out but I figured we might as well keep it in, albeit in the place where I've moved the link rather than in the main text body where the original author put it. Brian Powell (talk) 03:53, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Potomac bridges

Hi,

could you maybe point out to me why they should be considered notable - I mean, they are bridges and that's it, isn't it?

Regards,

Gunnar Hendrich (talk) 17:02, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Most of them aren't necessarily that notable at least on the Upper North Branch Potomac. Since there was already a series of articles, I just added one that was missing.

Brian Powell (talk) 17:59, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the answer. I am going to keep an eye on the articles. Gunnar Hendrich (talk) 07:40, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

Vandalism on WV state park articles

Brian, I've been buried at work this week, and not been following my watchlist closely. Someone has been vandalizing several WV state park articles, including the list. Looks like all the vandalism has been reversed, but you may follow the action. WVhybrid (talk) 04:21, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Er, ah, I just noticed that you are already ahead of me, and have reverted at least one of the vandalisms. Good job,as always. WVhybrid (talk) 04:26, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
I've been trying to check my watchlist periodically as I've been working through other stuff. It looks like a couple people must have the articles on their watchlists as the problems seem to be getting reverted pretty quickly, but this is still frustrating. The vandal keeps hopping between different IPs so it would be hard to have them blocked. Hopefully they'll just get bored and quit. Brian Powell (talk) 04:43, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

I just used your photo of Hawkeye Point

Dear Brian,

In my blog, Carbon-Based, I just used your lovely photo of Hawkeye Point, to accompany an article about climate change impacts on Iowa agriculture from the Des Moines Register.

WV State Routes

Hi. I noticed that there were a few edit conflicts when I added junctions to the infoboxes. If I am not doing this right or there is an easier way to add it, please let me know! I'm still fairly new and I'd rather someone show me the correct way! Thanks! Oh, and I'm sorry if I've messed with anything you had up previously!

WELK-FM

Thanks for the updates to the WELK page. You wouldn't know if WELK has a website? The logo that is on the page is from a "preview" website that InterTech Media was making for WELK. I haven't been able to find the website online (the finished product) yet. - NeutralHomerTalk • October 10, 2008 @ 01:54

There isn't a website for WELK as far as I know. I listen to its sister WV Radio Corporation "Classic Top 40" station WFGM and they've been periodically mentioning that a website is "coming soon" for about the last year. Still no website. I wouldn't hold my breath for WELK since it is a smaller market. Brian Powell (talk) 03:18, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
That's what I kinda thought, but wanted to make sure. If you do hear of a website for either WFGM or WELK, please let me know. Take Care...NeutralHomerTalk • October 10, 2008 @ 03:43

Honest question

Because I've been puzzled over this for a while, and you converted a decimal coord to DMS. Why do you prefer one over the other? - Denimadept (talk) 23:35, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

A couple reasons, but mostly because the USGS topo maps use DMS formatting. I guess that's about as close to an official standard that I've seen. On more of a personal preference level, I think the DMS formatting is a bit cleaner to read and easier to remember - I can remember the 3 parts of a DMS coord in my head while I'm looking up something but I have trouble kicking track of all the decimal digits. Brian Powell (talk) 23:49, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

I-81 nevermind

Well, nevermind. Apologies for revert, I was clearly uninformed. I still don't know all the intricacies of {{jct}}. It's not perfect and there are always some instances when it's better to not use it. But thank you for showing me today about the "county" parameter. Good to know! --MPD T / C 05:48, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

No problem. I agree there's still some stuff where the jct template is less than ideal, but for most cases it helps to improve consistency in formatting. I modified the template for VA secondary routes so that they don't create a link unless a county has been specified. I'm guessing that in most cases, there isn't a need for the link as the routes are fairly minor and not worthy of an article. Brian Powell (talk) 06:35, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

GRT

Did you see this [2]? How do you respond to it beside "Expand it yourself!"  ? I mean, I love the GRT. But it is long, skinny, and beautiful.... What else is there to say? WVhybrid (talk) 00:51, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I don't know. I suppose we could add more about the history of the rail line and the park, but it'd be nice if the person who posted the message would help contribute on their own. FWIW, there is a nice book called The Durbin Route that is a history of the rail line. I own the book, but I don't really have the time to do anything with it right now. Brian Powell (talk) 06:21, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
About 15 years ago I wrote co-authored a booklet on WV rail trails. It sold out 3 printings, but I don't think I have a copy any more. I may have a friend who has a copy. I may borrow some text from from that if I can find it. Also, I think I have a photo of the memorial sign for Mark Harkins, who created the trail. Maybe I can post that to the photo gallery. Thanks for the link. I saw they're created their own site for WBTQ to go along with the reimaging. I'm still not finding anything for WFGM, though. Must have been an Elkins market thing. Brian Powell (talk) 03:20, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
According to a WhoIs search, wfgmfm.com is registered to "AJG Broadcasting" on Earl L. Core Road in Morgantown (the main studios of WVRC in Morgantown). So, it looks like a site for them is on the way soon too. :) Glad I can help on the WELK front and when the WFGM site launches, I will let ya know. Proposed deletion of West Virginia Route 817

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article West Virginia Route 817, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. -- Jeandré, 2008-11-11t11:52z 11:52, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

AfD nomination of West Virginia Route 817

I have nominated West Virginia Route 817, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/West Virginia Route 817. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. -- Jeandré, 2008-11-12t18:58z 18:58, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Beury Mtn WMA

Brian:

Nice addition on the expansion. I also liked the adding the citations to the archive.

BTW, did you see this? Seems like everyone wants to give our project some advise. How about some help????

I got diverted from WMA's into some political bios. But I will get back to the WMA's soon.

Have a nice Thanksgiving.

Date function or template

Brian: Has the date function in the citation templates changed? I seem to remember that the notation 2008-12-1 would resolve to December 1, 2008, but now it resolves to 2008-12-1, which doesn't match the Manual of Style.

Oh, yeah, Merry Christmas.... WVhybrid (talk) 03:47, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

There has been a lot of discussion going around since the fall when MoS was changed to deprecate auto-linked (and auto-formatted) dates. I noticed the autoformatting stopped on the citation templates, too. It appears that change was made around November 9.
There are several different discussions going around about how to handle dates going forward, so I think it would probably be best to wait and see how things shake out before changing things manually. It appears the auto-formatting will be returning in some form, just without the wikilinking for the date and year.
Merry Christmas to you, too. Brian Powell (talk) 16:10, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. I just looked at some of that discussion. My first reaction is my grandfather's old saying: "Oh, brother!". And I agree with you that "wait and see" is a good policy. WVhybrid (talk) 18:15, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

Otter Creek

Nice revert on Otter Creek. For some reason I was a little hesitant on removing the "non-notable" edits. But I enthusiastically endorse what you did. WVhybrid (talk) 16:22, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

I debated about it, but when I looked up the author the only thing I saw was his blog. I figured this wouldn't really be any different than if you or I wrote some flowery prose - we're not experts and it really isn't appropriate for an encyclopedia article. Brian Powell (talk) 19:59, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Angie (song)

Brian, I edited the Angie page with the facts about the song. I would never write something that is untrue, and it was not my intent to vandalize the page. I was in a restaurant with my family, and the song came on in the piped in music. I am not a kid, I am a 55 year old woman. You need to contact Mr. Bruskin in Florida at National Deli (who I have not spoken to since 1981 and I googled to see where he was) and get the facts. Jagger/Richards took the song as their own because it was never copyrighted. I don't know if they would ever admit it or not. But it is true. What Keith Richards said was that the name Angie just fits. He did not say that he wrote it. Also search for Dolph Trayman, or any of his associates before you say this is not the truth. I would be glad to meet with you in New York or speak to you on the phone if you wish. Just send me another message on the Angie page. I have told my friends about this but I have never wnet public with it because I figured the reaction would be the one that yours was. Please do a little investigating before you accuse me of vandalism. I look forward to hearing from you. Best, AndreaAsrrn (talk) 18:42, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

hello Brian - just wanted to alert you to the note i left on the Talk:Angie (song) page: according to WP:BLP#Non-article_space libellous assertions shouldn't be left on talk pages either, and i reckon it would be fitting if you were the one to delete or archive it. thanks! Sssoul (talk) 09:34, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
I'm not entirely sure if the WP:BLP#Non-article_space statement applied since the article isn't directly a biography, but frankly I agree with you Sssoul that it seems unlikely the assertion is true and can be sufficiently document. If Asrrn can produce verifiable sources, she can add the material again at that time. Brian Powell (talk) 14:11, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
thanks Brian - my understanding is that BLP policies apply not just to biographical articles per se, but to assertions about living people anywhere on wikipedia. i guess i'd also direct Asrrn to WP:NOR and WP:RS if she takes exception to the deletion. swing on Sssoul (talk) 15:35, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Non-profit use of Laurel Fork Wilderness Photo

Hi Brian,

I work for a non-profit called Friends of the Cheat. We are putting together an educational poster about the Cheat River to sell at our annual festival in order to provide free posters for local youth in West Virginia. We will be highlighting the many tributaries of the Cheat River, including Laurel Fork. We would like to use your photo in our poster an are seeking permissions. We will provide photo credit on the poster and can provide a copy of the finished product to you!

Thank you, please contact me at madison@cheat.org about more details and if we may have permission.

I'm not sure there's enough there to merit its own Wikipedia article. Bitmapped (talk) 23:28, 17 February 2019 (UTC)

2019 US Banknote Contest

US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here

Hoye-Crest Marker

Hello,

My name is Brett Ortler, and I'm the editor at Adventure Publications. We're producing a book on Backyard Science in the Northeast, and we're including a section on geography, and it includes the highest points of the respective states. We're looking for an image of Hoye-Crest in MD, and we came across this image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Hoye-Crest#/media/File:Hoye-Crest_Historical_Marker.jpg

With your permission, we'd like to use it on our book; we'd be happy to credit you and send you a copy of the resulting work once it's released.

Please let me know what you think; you can reach me at brett@adventurewithkeen.com

Thanks, and take care,

Brett — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.72.59.55 (talk) 15:58, 11 February 2021 (UTC)
