I'm back in Wild, Wonderful WV. Have you ever looked at List of Pennsylvania State Parks? Based on that article, we may have more work to do on the WV list. What do you think of the "Template:State parks of Pennsylvania map"?

One thing in the Manual of Style (main page) is the statement: "Using color alone to convey information (color coding) should not be done". I wonder if that means the color coding for the should have some sort of backup code for folks that can't see the color? An ideas?

I will keep trying to finish the red links in the protected area template. But I'm pretty sure it will take me a while.

One final point, Brian, then I'm finished. Have you noticed someone adding a bunch of acronyms to the state parks? Do you have an opinion? WVhybrid (talk) 04:03, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

I like the PA map with the wikilinks to each park. Their map has the points manually set for each park using relative X/Y positions. When I have a chance I might poke around to see if there is a cleaner way of doing this by specifying lat/long coordinates.

I'm not too concerned about the color-coding for the region. We're already listing the counties for each park, which is more granular information than just the general region. The color-coding provides general at-a-glance type info.

Which parks are you seeing with the acronyms? Blackwater Falls had this previously, I know. LightBot is going through and changing the km part of the convert templates, but that is just a general cleanup. Brian Powell (talk) 13:03, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

I've found the acronyms at Canaan and Blackwater SPs, and at the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge. The histories show the changes were made by an IP that I think is associated with User:Valerius Tygart‎. I left a note on one of the article talk pages, but didn't get a response.

I could go either way on the background colors. Making the list sortable doesn't really make much sense, though. At some point I' like to do a wikilinked-map like Pennsylvania has, but it might be a little while before I have a chance to figure out a decent way of accomplishing this.

At some point, we should probably also add some stuff on the former Mont Cheateau State Park on Cheat Lake (lodge now houses WVU BBER) and split out the former Grandview State Park rather than just redirecting to New River Gorge NR. 04:44, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Regarding the map, could we write an algorithm that turned the long/lat into x/y coordinates? Then just plug the equations into Excel, then port the x/y's into the map per the PA list? It's going to rain this week-end, maybe I can make that my week-end goal.

I recall going to the state science fair about 1970 at Mont Cheateau, but I don't remember it being a state park. Can you dig up some references on its SP period?

Just to get something up there, the Excel spreadsheet for coords might be the best way to go. Eventually it'd be nice to have something that auto-figured the x/y based on lat/long. I'll poke around and see how Geobox is doing this.

I've tried looking at various points and haven't been able to find out much about Mont Chateau. I have seen articles saying it was a state park, but I guess it never quite took off or something. Some quick Google searches last night weren't really coming up with much. I may need to go to the WVU Libraries WV history collection sometime and do some digging. One suggestion from the peer review was to add the establishment date to each park.... Maybe you can find a "History of WV State Parks" in the WVU library system. I don't think its in the Kanawha County Library WVhybrid (talk) 02:25, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

Well, this is a night for eating my words. I found a book title "Where people and nature meet: A history of the West Virginia state parks" on Amazon for $10, so I ordered it. We will see if that helps with the lead and some dates.

The thumbnails look OK either way. I personally don't necessarily see what the big deal is with the size.

The book you mentioned sounds vaguely familiar. There is one circulating copy of it at WVU Libraries. I'll try to get it tomorrow. I don't know if you have it, but I wonder if the WV Encyclopedia that was released about 2 years ago might have some data. I'll see if I can find a copy of that as well.

I'll head out to Cheat Lake some evening here and grab photos of the old Mont Chateau lodge. While I don't think they're worth trying to get, I do remember from a hike a couple years ago that there are some older trail signs at Coopers Rock referencing Mont Chateau. I tested increasing the dot size from 5 pixels to 7 pixels. I found that I needed to subtract two pixels from the dot X/Y location to correctly reposition the dot on the map.

Brian, I don't have a good understanding of the CSS "language", so I can't tell which style= section needs to be increase to 7 x 7 to increase the click area. Can you look at the coding and figure that out (and explain it to me?). Thanks.WVhybrid (talk) 13:32, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Here is my latest question... The command "include.../noinclue" doesn't seem to be working on the last line of the template code. The code seems to me to be exactly like the Pennsy. code, but works differently... The result is the articles the template is inserted into end up in the template category... Found it! The problem wasn't in the template, but the code I copied into the file... arrghhhhhh.
Another question. I know the changing the size of the thumbnails doesn't seem interest you, but I think going from 100 pixels to 125 pixels will improve the table. Would you mind replacing the Droop Mountain and the Moncove Lake -squares photo files with 125 pixel images (or, I'll do it if you want.)

I just happened to notice the change on a mailing I got from WV State Parks yesterday. I tried looking but couldn't find any press releases from either WVDNR or Forestry, anything in the Charleston or Bluefield newspapers, or anything from the state legislature.

Taking a wild guess, I wonder if this might have something to do with the lease non-renewal last year that caused Berwind Lake WMA to drop from like 18,000 acres to about 100 acres. Maybe this is to make up for that somehow? Brian Powell (talk) 03:48, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

I've been trying to check my watchlist periodically as I've been working through other stuff. It looks like a couple people must have the articles on their watchlists as the problems seem to be getting reverted pretty quickly, but this is still frustrating. WELK-FM

Thanks for the updates to the WELK page. You wouldn't know if WELK has a website? The logo that is on the page is from a "preview" website that InterTech Media was making for WELK. There isn't a website for WELK as far as I know. I listen to its sister WV Radio Corporation "Classic Top 40" station WFGM and they've been periodically mentioning that a website is "coming soon" for about the last year. Still no website. Honest question

Because I've been puzzled over this for a while, and you converted a decimal coord to DMS. Why do you prefer one over the other? - Denimadept (talk) 23:35, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

A couple reasons, but mostly because the USGS topo maps use DMS formatting. I guess that's about as close to an official standard that I've seen. On more of a personal preference level, I think the DMS formatting is a bit cleaner to read and easier to remember - I can remember the 3 parts of a DMS coord in my head while I'm looking up something but I have trouble kicking track of all the decimal digits. No problem. I agree there's still some stuff where the jct template is less than ideal, but for most cases it helps to improve consistency in formatting. I modified the template for VA secondary routes so that they don't create a link unless a county has been specified. I'm guessing that in most cases, there isn't a need for the link as the routes are fairly minor and not worthy of an article. Brian Powell (talk) 06:35, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I don't know. I suppose we could add more about the history of the rail line and the park, but it'd be nice if the person who posted the message would help contribute on their own. FWIW, there is a nice book called The Durbin Route that is a history of the rail line. I own the book, but I don't really have the time to do anything with it right now. About 15 years ago I wrote co-authored a booklet on WV rail trails. It sold out 3 printings, but I don't think I have a copy any more. I may have a friend who has a copy. I may borrow some text from from that if I can find it. Also, I think I have a photo of the memorial sign for Mark Harkins, who created the trail. Maybe I can post that to the photo gallery. According to a WhoIs search, wfgmfm.com is registered to "AJG Broadcasting" on Earl L. Core Road in Morgantown (the main studios of WVRC in Morgantown). Date function or template

Brian: Has the date function in the citation templates changed? I seem to remember that the notation 2008-12-1 would resolve to December 1, 2008, but now it resolves to 2008-12-1, which doesn't match the Manual of Style.

There has been a lot of discussion going around since the fall when MoS was changed to deprecate auto-linked (and auto-formatted) dates. I noticed the autoformatting stopped on the citation templates, too. It appears that change was made around November 9.

There are several different discussions going around about how to handle dates going forward, so I think it would probably be best to wait and see how things shake out before changing things manually. It appears the auto-formatting will be returning in some form, just without the wikilinking for the date and year.

Angie (song)

Brian, I edited the Angie page with the facts about the song. I would never write something that is untrue, and it was not my intent to vandalize the page. I was in a restaurant with my family, and the song came on in the piped in music. I am not a kid, I am a 55 year old woman. You need to contact Mr. Bruskin in Florida at National Deli (who I have not spoken to since 1981 and I googled to see where he was) and get the facts. Jagger/Richards took the song as their own because it was never copyrighted. I don't know if they would ever admit it or not. But it is true. What Keith Richards said was that the name Angie just fits. He did not say that he wrote it. Also search for Dolph Trayman, or any of his associates before you say this is not the truth. I would be glad to meet with you in New York or speak to you on the phone if you wish. Just send me another message on the Angie page. I have told my friends about this but I have never wnet public with it because I figured the reaction would be the one that yours was. I'm not entirely sure if the WP:BLP#Non-article_space statement applied since the article isn't directly a biography, but frankly I agree with you Sssoul that it seems unlikely the assertion is true and can be sufficiently document. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. Non-profit use of Laurel Fork Wilderness Photo

Hi Brian,

I work for a non-profit called Friends of the Cheat. We are putting together an educational poster about the Cheat River to sell at our annual festival in order to provide free posters for local youth in West Virginia. We will be highlighting the many tributaries of the Cheat River, including Laurel Fork. We would like to use your photo in our poster an are seeking permissions. We will provide photo credit on the poster and can provide a copy of the finished product to you!

2019 US Banknote Contest

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.
