CVUA

Hi Bgpaulus. Just to let you know, I've finally got round to looking at your last CVUA tasks and setting you a new one. Sorry it took so long - I've been busy and distracted by the Olympics. This is your last task now; once you complete this, you'll have a five-day monitoring period, during which I'll watch your progress and let you know of any issues I notice; your final test will follow that. ItsZippy (talkcontributions) 15:06, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

No worries, Zippy. I saw the Olympics notice on your user page and figured there was WP:NORUSH, then I got distracted by some non-vandalism template-related maintenance (oh, shiny!); next thing I knew, almost a fortnight had slipped by. Anyway, I've replied to the latest CVUA task and am now back to recent change patrolling. Cheers! Bgpaulus <small-caps>(WORDS & DEEDS)</small-caps> 20:35, 15 August 2012 (UTC)
Don't worry, that's fine (it gave me a bit of time to look at some other things too). It's good to be doing other things as well as anti-vandalism anyway, so getting distracted by more interesting things is probably a good thing. Anyway, I'll take a look at what you've done. That was the last section of your course, congratulations! After this, you will have a five-day monitoring period, during which I will monitor your anti-vandalism efforts and let you know of any problems I find. If I am happy with that, you will then sit your final exam! ItsZippy (talkcontributions) 20:46, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

are you mentally retarded user:ugugugugugugug is my own account you absolute jibbering fool — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ugugugugugugug (talkcontribs) 15:56, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for your comment; it has eliminated any doubts I might have had about reporting you. Bgpaulus <small-caps>(WORDS & DEEDS)</small-caps> 17:27, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

changing username

The directions and instructions for changing a username are very confusing and not very direct or very helpful at all. Who writes these articles? Can you help? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bot88 (talkcontribs) 21:54, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

If I can help you, I promise that I will. To answer your question about who writes these articles, the short answer is "everyone". For a longer answer, please see this. I know that some parts of Wikipedia can be confusing, and not just for newcomers like yourself; I'm still learning the ropes, too. I can also tell that you're eager to get editing articles, but let me suggest that you start slow and work your way up to that: try reading this first and then reading this. Please try that, and then let me know if you have any questions. Cheers! Bgpaulus <small-caps>(WORDS & DEEDS)</small-caps> 22:08, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
I figured it out. Very confusing though. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bot88 (talkcontribs) 22:17, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
I'm pleased to hear that you figured it out and I see that you've already requested your new username. If I can be of any assistance in the future, please contact me here. Alternatively, check out Wikipedia:Questions, or ask your question on your own talk page and then place {{help me}} before the question (that will notify a helper who will contact you shortly). Welcome to Wikipedia and happy editing! Bgpaulus <small-caps>(WORDS & DEEDS)</small-caps> 23:09, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Promotional editing for Alternative Future Radio

How come when i add my shows interview with Carol Rosin to the list, mine is advertising, but someone else already did it and thats not? Please help me understand the difference? We are a legitimate show and we interviewed her. I have her on skype, do you want her to edit it herself, i'm sure she will. Seriously, i'm having enough problems trying to get us listed without this. Is this what wikipedia is going to be like? I've donated twice before to WP, but I did not know it was run by nazis. I will never EVER donate again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AlternativeFutureRadio (talkcontribs) 16:03, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

Heavens, AlternativeFutureRadio! You managed to pack so much into just one post, I'm not sure where to begin. I was initially inclined to simply ignore you, but here in Wikipedia-land we're also supposed to assume good faith, so I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and try to answer your questions as best I can:
  • Regarding your specific edits to the Carol Rosin article, here and here, the issue Cst17 and I had with them was that a user named AlternativeFutureRadio was adding external links to a website of the same name. A Wikipedia conflict of interest (COI) is an incompatibility between the aim of Wikipedia, which is to produce a neutral, reliably sourced encyclopedia, and the aims of an individual editor. COI editing involves contributing to Wikipedia in order to promote your own interests or those of other individuals, companies, or groups. When advancing outside interests is more important to an editor than advancing the aims of Wikipedia, that editor stands in a conflict of interest. Please see WP:COI for more details.
By the way, I'm not sure about what "someone else" did, but if you could provide some specifics, I'll be happy to take a look at their edit(s), too.
  • To your suggestion that Ms. Rosin edit the Wikipedia article about her: she's welcome to do so, provided she adheres to the same policies and guidelines that apply to everyone else who edits Wikipedia, including you and me, although I strongly suggest she first read through WP:AUTOBIO.
Incidentally, I notice that you've requested a username change to markmurphy1975, so you might want to read WP:AUTOBIO, too, especially if you're planning on (re)creating or editing the Mark Murphy (broadcaster) article.
Also, I noticed that you've used the pronoun "we" more than once, and I'm assuming that you're not using the majestic plural. Part of Wikipedia's username policy is that usernames should not be shared between more than one individual, so usernames that imply the likelihood of shared use are not permitted. Likewise, usernames that unambiguously consist of a name of a company, group, institution or product are not permitted because they are considered promotional (it was that plus your edits to the Alternative Future Radio article that got you blocked, by the way). Please see WP:GROUPNAME for more details.
  • So, let's recap what's brought us to this point:
  1. New user account Sirgrimsby is created and proceeds to create a half dozen new inter-related articles of questionable notability (see WP:NOTE).
  2. Less than an hour later, your account is created and proceeds to edit those same new articles, plus a couple of others, including the Carol Rosin article.
  3. As each of the new articles is tagged by various editors for speedy deletion, you contest the deletion by saying, in part, that "this is my first attempt at submitting an article".
Wikipedia is a community and, like other communities, it has a set of rules that help everyone get along and work toward a common goal. Aside from the possibility that you and Sirgrimsby might be the same person (again, we're assuming good faith here, so I won't dwell on that), I commend your boldness, but I'm also baffled why someone would attempt such an effort without first learning the basics, and then resort to name-calling when things didn't turn out the way they'd expected. Honestly, it's a shame that you appear to be giving up so easily, but if you ever decide to try again, I encourage you to first read this.
Speaking of the aforementioned name-calling, you seem a little quick to invoke the "n" word. This is just my personal opinion, but attempting to equate Wikipedia with a fascist ideology that promotes racism and antisemitism makes me wonder if you understand the meaning of the word. If, however, you do understand and you were using it hyperbolically, then it just seems to me disrespectful to the memories of the millions of people who have died at the hands of its followers, not to mention those who survived.
And, finally, I say this with complete sincerity: if you ever decide to try editing Wikipedia again, I would be pleased to help you in any way I can; just drop a note here on my talk page and we'll take it from there. Cheers! Bgpaulus <small-caps>(WORDS & DEEDS)</small-caps> 20:26, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

CVUA - final exam

Your five-day monitoring period has been completed without any issues at all; I am very impressed. The last thing to do before you graduate is your final test, then we're done! I shall write the test soon and let you know when it is ready. ItsZippy (talkcontributions) 16:16, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

Aw, shucks, Zippy. I wasn't sure my efforts over the past few days had given you enough to work with, but I'm glad to hear it was. Looking forward to the next bit! Bgpaulus <small-caps>(WORDS & DEEDS)</small-caps> 21:13, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
There wasn't much, but you've more than shown your capability over the whole of the course, so I was happy. Your final exam is ready now; good luck! ItsZippy (talkcontributions) 12:53, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
Your final exam is still waiting to be started - are there any problems I can help with? ItsZippy (talkcontributions) 18:35, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
I do apologize for my absence, Zippy; something unexpectedly came up IRL which required a brief wikibreak. I should be back on track in another day or two. Bgpaulus <small-caps>(WORDS & DEEDS)</small-caps> 21:42, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
That's alright. Whenever you are ready is fine. ItsZippy (talkcontributions) 12:35, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Hello Bgpaulus -- re: Alcohol Justice

I added 9 citations, 2 external links and 3 wiki references to people like Gavin Newsom.

Obviously I am no Wiki expert at all, but learning how. I hope this gives the Charge for Harm section some credibility.

Thank you, Quistorian, and welcome back to Wikipedia. Bgpaulus <small-caps>(WORDS & DEEDS)</small-caps> 21:45, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
