Percy Lavon Julian / 168.93.97.125

Hello and welcome to my talk page (I'm glad you were able to find it)! I've created a special sandbox for the Percy Lavon Julian article here. If I understood what you wrote on the article's talk page, most of the improvements you'd like to make seem to be related to the article's "Oak Park and Julian Laboratories" section. The African American history in the villages of Maywood and Oak Park is complex and complicated and the Julians were a part of this complexity. During his time in Maywood Dr Julian lead open housing marches, was the first African American President of the Washington School PTA and the first black school board president of the district 89 (Maywood/Melrose Park/Broadview)school board. In addition he was the first black chemist at the American Can Company (for 6 months) and then was fired due to his race after which he went to work for Glidden in Franklin Park while continuing to live in Maywood(15 years total). African Americans came to the area in the late 1890's and settled in Oak Park and River Forest and continued to reside there in smaller and smaller numbers until 1963.Their church were burned and rebuilt and burned again at Harlem and West-gate in Oak Park in the 1920's. After such hostile treatment their first time of being there they ultimately migrated to Maywood and established a vibrant community. Not certain who wrote your copy about Dr Julian but their research was not very good. I am a member of the Maywood Historic Preservation Commission and would like for my comments to be incorporated into the account of his life. You stated that you felt this should be included in the Oak Park section and I disagree. There should be a Maywood section created to explain clearly his time in Maywood and (as stated in the PBS special "Forgotten Genius") the fact that many of the discoveries were done by Dr. Percy L. Julian of Maywood 9not Oak Park), IL

My uncle (who is still alive) was a friend of his in Maywood

Hello, 168.93.97.125/LG. First things first:

1. I could be mistaken, but from some of your comments, I'm inferring that you haven't yet read the introduction to Wikipedia. I urge you to do that first, before we begin, just to make sure you and I have a common frame of reference for discussing things like editing on Wikipedia.
2. You're not required to do so, but I nonetheless recommend that you create an account. In particular, it allows your contributions to be attributed to your personalized username; some IP addresses (for example, perhaps the one you've been using, 168.93.97.125) can change periodically, and may be shared by several users, which can be confusing to other editors. Before you choose your username, though, you should also read Wikipedia's policy on usernames.
3. The sandbox I created is here. For our reference, it contains a snapshot of the article's "Oak Park and Julian Laboratories" section, but we can easily create a "Maywood, Illinois" section before it (which I've already done). And, just to see what it looks like, I've also tried splitting the aforementioned section into two: "Oak Park, Illinois" and "Julian Laboratories".

Re your message: The IPs and new accounts are angry at SummerPhD because xe was reverting their attempts to vandalize the Casual game article. The worldwide IPs are due to the attack against the article and a few others being originated from 4chan. I saw that you are already a member of the CVU, but a trip through the academy would probably be useful. On the warning - I rarely go 1, 2, 3, 4; if what they do is clearly disruptive, especially offensive (etc - like the IP's edit), or especially if they do the same thing after a warning I usually jump levels (primarily jumping lvl 1 or lvl 2). I appreciated the advice. I've often been tempted to jump warning levels, but WP:AGF and the second criterion at WP:AIV ("The user must be given enough warnings to stop their disruption.") together usually give me pause (there have been a few exceptions, of course). It's my hope that I'll never do anything that would earn me a trout or, worse, one of the "uw-tempabuse" warnings, so I generally try to take the high road and err on the side of caution -- even then, however, I'm the first one to admit that my track record isn't (and likely never will be) perfect. Hi, 68.13.241.238, and thank you for your note. First, I think you might have me confused with someone else; as far as I can tell, I've never edited the Oklahoma article. I believe the only article you and I have both edited recently is the one on Jessica Feshbach.

To answer your specific questions, in the order in which you asked them:

1. No, I don't "own" Wikipedia. In fact, Wikipedia's conduct policy on Ownership of articles explicitly forbids "ownership". All Wikipedia content is edited collaboratively and no one, no matter how skilled, or of how high standing in the community, has the right to act as though they are the owner of a particular article, let alone the entire encyclopedia.
2. One of the great things about Wikipedia is that it can be edited constructively by anyone, including you and me. For my part, among other things, I'm a member of Wikipedia's Recent changes patrol, a voluntary communal patrol in which editors check recent edits made by other editors to ensure that they're in line with Wikipedia's three prinicipal core policies of neutral point of view, verifiability, and no original research.

Before you continue editing, I encourage you to please take a look at the wikilinks I've sprinkled throughout this reply, as well as this introduction to Wikipedia. I know there's a lot of information to absorb, so you may want to start with Wikipedia's fundamental operating principles, which have been nicely summarized in the form of these five "pillars", and go from there. Taking some time now to become familiar with the basics of Wikipedia might save you some frustration later.

I find it hard to believe that every one of the 1995/6 hurricanes really needed to be "corrected" like he did on 1 July, but if you can give me an example of one of the "good" edits, it may speed me up a bit. Honestly, I'm not sure if I'm making things better or worse. When I started digging into the Tropical Storm Faxai (2007) article, for example, I ended up making these changes. I'll keep chipping away at it, but half the battle is that I'm not very familiar with the subject matter (hurricanes, cyclones, typhoons, etc).

Generally we tend to follow the World Meteorological Organisation's official warning centre for the naming stuff which in this case is the JMA, however there are some exceptions to this rule and i eprsoanlly would not call it reason enough to change whats in the article already unless doing something else.Jason Rees (talk) 00:03, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

Their both reliable with the first one in particular being very reliable since it is the JTWC's own post season reviewed data (Best tracks in other words). Don't worry about being trying not to be sarcastic with me, as i find the naming stuff rather fascinating as well. For example between WW2 and 2000 what is essentially todays JTWC, named TC's in the WPAC, while the Indians only started assign names to TC's in 2004.Jason Rees (talk) 16:07, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

Kansas City Storm and number of WSFL Division Championships

The Storm did not earn a championship in 2011 as they were removed from the WSFL for unprofessional conduct by the ownership and can be verified by WSFL owner and management. The Missouri Phoenix was awarded the WSFL division championship which the team used storm players but the team played as the Phoenix.

Also on the Storm's website it states sevaral falsified statements regarding the 2011 division championship and statements made by the WSFL owner which he didnt make. The Storm have been told several times to remove the information regarding any reference to the 2011 season and false statements about league owner Randall Fields from her website and they continue to ignore requests. I've tried (apparently unsuccessfully) to explain this, so I'll try again: Verifiability, No original research and Neutral point of view are Wikipedia's core content policies. Wikipedia's deletion policy can be found here and the deletion process guidelines are here. Disputes over page content are usually not dealt with by deleting the page, except in severe cases. Improving a page through regular editing is generally preferred over deletion. You haven't been willing to try the editing approach, so I'm pessimistic about your chances of success in getting the article deleted, but I wish you luck, nonetheless. I work for the WSFL and the Kansas City Storm are claiming they won a division that I am the director of that alone is reliable and verified proof that the Kansas City Storm did not win the 2011 Division Championship. I have been involved in this league for 3 years and just that alone should be enough evidence that the information the Kansas City Storm has listed is false the Kansas Phoenix is the Division Champion on record for the 2011 season in the WSFL.
