Odds and sods of Wiki-ness[edit]

Hi there, nice to see you've been out and about on Wikipedia, and have done a great job on Guy de la Bédoyère. A few bits and pieces to make life easier for you.

Notable Wikipedians[edit]

From your contribs and the personal photos you've added, I'm making the reasonable assumption you are indeed Mr G de la B. You may know that Wikipedia suffers heavily from vandals; among other things they may sign up in the name of a notable person and cause distress to that person, as well as deceiving others. I've looked for guidelines about this (I'm not an admin, just another contributor), and the best I can find is this, which suggests you state who you are on your user page (click red "User page" tab above). In addition, you might like to add a note on your personal website - which presumably only you or your authorized people can edit - saying, eg, "I occasionally contribute to Wikipedia as User:Bedoyere". That should head off any misunderstandings or accusations of cyber-squatting by being verifiable.

You can also add {{Notable Wikipedian|User:Bedoyere|de la Bedoyere, Guy|editedhere=yes}} to Talk:Guy de la Bédoyère.

Pics[edit]

Nice additions, these. But I noticed you've put the attribution in the caption, which WP doesn't do. Text contributions are not signed but recorded in the page History, and similarly attribution and copyright info for pics lives on the pic's own page - just as you've done at Image:WTC2000.jpg. I saw on your website you've had grief with people using photos without permission, so I hope you're OK with the licence on that pic - you've donated it to the Public Domain, which means anyone can use it for any purpose, commercial or otherwise.

By far the best guidance on licencing is on Wikimedia Commons, at Commons:Licensing. Commons is the central library for all the Wikimedia projects and different language WPs. If you're sure you're happy to have pics become public property, it's best to upload them there so all the projects can access them. And it has the added bonus of rather clearer help for the user! (Eg Commons:First steps and Commons:Upload.)

As a quickie, Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License is a good one if you like to be credited.

Phew[edit]

Sorry this is so much. Dealing with Wikipedia often demands huge investments in understanding new bits of the system, and it can all be too much to bother with. I'm no expert, but will happily help if I can.

Good luck with the teaching, btw: I had to give up because it literally made me ill, so I'm hugely admiring of anyone who takes up the baton! Very best wishes, JackyR | Talk

Thanks for contributing and welcome to Wikipedia[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia Guy! I have edited your article a little bit in the past and it's nice to have you here editing it - interesting about the "RSR and INPCDA" coin initials! I enjoy your appearances in Time Team and if you get a minute to look over that and articles to do with your own specialism like Roman Britain, Roman currency, Roman conquest of Britain and starting points like Roman sites in the United Kingdom, I am sure your contributions would be widely welcomed!

Thanks again for taking part and we hope to hear more from you in the future - the contribution of experts makes Wikipedia more focused, useful and interesting for both the web population (for whom Wikipedia is now essentially the number one source of information after Google) and regular Wikipedia users and editors.

Messaging: a cunning trick![edit]

Actually it's in no way cunning. You go to someone's Discussion page, hit the "Edit this page" tab and start typing, just as in an article. The exciting, yellow "You have new messages" bar gets generated automatically. Next to "Edit" is the "+" tab, which is a quick way to start a new topic without wading through the page.

I've set up my signature so you can go direct to either my User Page or my User Talk Page (ie Discussion) with one click, but some signatures lead only to the User Page, and you then have to click "Discussion". Folk can get stroppy if some clueless newbie edits their precious User Page by mistake... :-) Have fun, now, and don't forget to sign your posts by typing "~~~~". Non-free use disputed for Image:KSHSlogo.jpg[edit]

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:KSHSlogo.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read carefully the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content and then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:27, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free use disputed for Image:KSHSlogo.jpg Solution[edit]

Thanks for pointing this out. As a simple solution I have deleted the thumbnail and caption since the logo is also visible on the public domain image of the school sign, and there is no point in repeating this. Bedoyere 08:46, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image copyright problem with Image:MichaeldelaBedoyere.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:MichaeldelaBedoyere.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 07:07, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image (Image:KSHSlogo.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:KSHSlogo.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 04:58, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your 'free' or PD images[edit]

Thank you for uploading images/media to Wikipedia! There is however another Wikimedia foundation project called Wikimedia Commons, a central media repository for all free media. In the future, please consider creating an account and uploading media there instead. That way, all the other language Wikipedias can use them too, as well as our many sister projects. This will also allow our visitors to search for, view and use our media in one central location. If you wish to move previous uploads to Commons, see Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons. Please note that non-free content, such as images claimed as fair use, cannot be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. Help us spread the word about Commons by informing other users, and please continue uploading!

  • Hi, Can I first say how much I enjoyed your appearances on Time Team over the years. Also, do you have a picture of Robin Bush that you can upload onto the article about him I have just started? Any help you can provide with the article would be much appreciated. Thanks. --Jack1956 (talk) 08:50, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello![edit]

Hello, It's James: the person in Mr. Quinton's class who collects coins, you gave me an Australian 50 cents and a 1696 Bristol Halfcrown in December 2007 at St. George's College. I didn't realise you were on Wikipedia until I found you in the History section of a page on coins. Well thank you for the coins, I didn't say much when you gave them to me because I lost my voice with the flu that morning. I did exactly what you said and found out what they are - they now sit comfortably in one of my display cases! 95jb14 (talk) 16:22, 4 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Notification of automated file description generation[edit]

Your upload of File:CarenzaLewis.jpg or contribution to its description is noted, and thanks (even if belatedly) for your contribution. In order to help make better use of the media, an attempt has been made by an automated process to identify and add certain information to the media's description page.

This notification is placed on your talk page because a bot has identified you either as the uploader of the file, or as a contributor to its metadata. It would be appreciated if you could carefully review the information the bot added. To opt out of these notifications, please follow the instructions here. Thanks! Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. File source problem with File:Guydelabed.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Guydelabed.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 09:36, 17 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for May 3[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited John Hartnell, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Gillingham (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
