Markup problems[edit]

Some of the signatures listed have problems with the markup.

  • November 26, 2012 to November 28, 2012 - here, <span style="color:#FF8C00"> is opened but not closed
  • November 28, 2012 to January 18, 2013 - the same problem as November 26, 2012 to November 28, 2012 but in addition, boldface is opened but not closed inside the <span style="color:Blue">'''Automatic</span>; similarly, boldface is closed but not opened inside <span style="color:Orange">''Strikeout'''''</span>. The order should have been
'''<span style="color:Blue">Automatic</span><span style="color:Orange">''Strikeout''</span>'''
  • March 11, 2013 to March 20, 2013 - here, the red text occurs because "dark blue" is not a defined color (see here), although most clients recognise "darkblue" (see here); another problem (which doesn't cause the red text) is that <span style="text:#808080 0.2em 0.2em 0.2em">...</span> is not valid because text: is not a valid CSS property (see Cascading Style Sheets Level 2 Revision 1 (CSS 2.1) Specification Appendix F. Full property table).
  • March 20, 2013 to April 3, 2013 - same as March 11, 2013 to March 20, 2013 but the invalid color "dark Blue" has also been used in a <span style="color:dark Blue">...</span>
  • Christmas season 2012 (December 12th–29th) - same problems as November 28, 2012 to January 18, 2013 although the colors differ

All others resolve to valid HTML5 with CSS 2.1 --Redrose64 (talk) 14:11, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well, thank you. I'm not going to change any of them, since it is a signature history and those were the signatures that I used. However, this does demonstrate how little I know about code. Most of the time, I just copy from someone else and make changes were it seems necessary. I guess I'll have to remember to be more careful in the future. • You may want to submit a request to WP:AWB/Tasks and ask them to replace all of the older versions of your signature with the new one because failing to close tags can be a major display problem on pages. I would do it myself for you, but am waiting to reapply for the AWB checklist because my previous request was denied because of the blocking thing and my lack of article space edits. Technical 13 (talk) 15:08, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Which ones would I need to have replaced? Also, I don't want the most current signature to be used to replace everything. I just want the dark blue to show up where the red was. AutomaticStrikeout (TCSign AAPT) 15:13, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I would post the request to review the discussion here and whomever answers, figure out what they are capable of (some of it may take some complex ReGex searching to accommodate what you want while making sure that all of the tags are properly closed, which is the more important part in my opinion. Technical 13 (talk) 15:41, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think anything needs fixing. (1) On the signature history page, the text following each signature is plain body text, despite the unclosed span/bold/colour tags - the signatures do not cause any damage to the following text; (2) Viewing the HTML source of the signature history page in my browser, it seems that the MediaWiki software is clever enough to add the missing tags at sensible places. -- John of Reading (talk) 16:16, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. If it isn't causing any harm, I guess there's no need to change anything. AutomaticStrikeout (TCSign AAPT) 16:25, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again AS... I am finally approved to use AWB on en.wikipedia. I've requested permission to go through and fix both your signatures and mine in a fell swoop in the WP:AWB/Tasks#Problems with signatures that have open tags section that you started if you are still interested. I just need to see that list with all of the revisions of your signature and I'll create the ReGex fixes for it and run it through real quick. Thanks. Technical 13 (talk) 21:38, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I didn't see this until just now. I'm not sure what list you are talking about, but if you wanted to fix my signature problem, that is fine with me. AutomaticStrikeout  !  C  Sign AAPT  21:10, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A small matter of style[edit]

Hi, re the latest edition of your signature - I notice that it has two instances of <font style="color:#FFFFFF;background:#0000fa;">...</font> You might not be aware, but the <font> element is obsolete. For maximum browser compatibility, you should use the <span> element instead. Luckily, the attributes that you've used this time - style="color:#FFFFFF;background:#0000fa;" - are common to both elements, and so it's a simple matter to change the four instances of the word font to span which gives <span style="color:#FFFFFF;background:#0000fa;">...</span> --Redrose64 (talk) 21:02, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. Did my edit fix the problem? AutomaticStrikeout  !  C  Sign AAPT  21:10, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
<small><span class="nowrap" style="border:1px solid #000;padding:1px;">'''[[User:AutomaticStrikeout|AutomaticStrikeout]]''' [[User_talk:AutomaticStrikeout|<span style="color:#FFF;background:#0000fa;">&nbsp;!&nbsp;</span>]] [[Special:Contributions/AutomaticStrikeout|C]] [[WP:AAPT|<span style="color:#FFF;background:#0000fa;">&nbsp;Sign AAPT&nbsp;</span>]]</span></small> would give you AutomaticStrikeout  !  C  Sign AAPT  and is a few bits shorter. Happy editing! Technical 13 (talk) 21:22, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I checked it in preview mode and the spacing was gone. AutomaticStrikeout  !  C  Sign AAPT  21:29, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I can tell, your sig as used here now has valid markup. Regarding Technical 13's suggestion: make sure you copy the markup from inside the edit box, otherwise the &nbsp; get converted to normal spaces. --Redrose64 (talk) 22:14, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

--- (edit conflict) I "always" forget that the parser still parses html entities even inside of <nowiki>...</nowiki> tags... Sigh... Anyways, I've updated the copy and paste so that it shows right without having to copy from edit. Technical 13 (talk) 22:32, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I think it has been fixed. Thanks to both of you. AutomaticStrikeout  !  C  Sign AAPT  22:22, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
