Type 2 T1 Transporter vs Type 1 Beetle[edit]
I think you have confused 'T1' with 'Type 1'. The VW Beetle is indeed known as the Type 1. And the VW Transporter is indeed the Type 2. And for completeness there was also a Type 3 and Type 4. These are quite distinct vehicles, although with a common heritage.
But the codes T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5 are not shorthand for Type 1, Type 2, etc. Instead, they are shorthand for Transporter generations 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. So the first generation of the Transport is known (retrospectively) as the VW Type 2 T1. Which means there is no conflict with the Type 1 Beetle and the T1 Transporter. - Thanks for the link. I take it I was supposed to search for T1 and find that it referred to the Beetle. So I searched for T1 (http://www.volkswagen-commercial-vehicles.com/en/tools/navigation/meta/search.html?searchText=t1&scopeFilter=). It gave me only one response (http://www.volkswagen-commercial-vehicles.com/en/company/chronicle/1956-1966.html) where the only mention of 'T1' explicitly contrasts it (the first generation Transporter) to the Beetle: 'Over the years, the T1 grew so to say with its tasks. However, below the divided windscreen it retained its face, a “family face” that gave it close ties with the Beetle, until it was succeeded by the T2'.
- I agree that the T1 name started out as colloquial but it is so ingrained to VW enthusiasts (and VW itself according to VW's own website) that it really only has one meaning - the first generation of the Transporter. Those that want to refer to the Beetle by its factory code don't say T1, they say Type 1. Stepho talk 08:23, 21 December 2013 (UTC)
