March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

Schoontje

I've run across an article written by my friend, SusunW, which uses the word "Schoontje" as a first name for one of the parents. The references both use the name but, to me, it doesn't seem like a name. Is it maybe a nickname? A word of endearment? Any help is appreciated. Buster Seven Talk 20:01, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

You've reverted my edit with the explanation: "As long as these are candidates and not proven we should not list them. (TW)"
But at least the sexual misconduct allegations are very likely alternative facts: None(*) of the links point to articles created after election day, but the wiki-article has been maintained till now. Why hasn't there emerged new information after election day? Is Mr. Trump irrelevant or sacrosanct now? I think, neither is the case. So why did the media bring up the story shortly before and then drop it abruptly at election day? --RosaLuxemburgOnFreedom (talk) 06:24, 1 April 2017 (UTC)
(*) Only one of the linked articles was published after Nov.8 (it was published on Nov. 9, so it was created before Nov. 9, too)

The alternative facts article explicitly discusses fake news by US ruling government, supported by leading federal government officials claiming truth if these "facts". Not all unfounded accusation are alternative facts, otherwise the list would be endless. Arnoutf (talk) 18:11, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

A cupcake for you!

Question is: is it art? ;) Thanks for an interesting debate. Despite our disagreements, the article is definitely more accurate and precise than when we started out yesterday. — Quasar G. 12:24, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

Doctor and schooling

Dear Arnoutf,

Thank you very much for your reply on the TALK page of Doctor (title). Ia gee that the comprehensive examination should be of such quality that it is decisive. My experience is that in (many) cases the title is granted as appreciation for "the amount of work". I am afraid that don't work and those doctors should refrain from publicizing and taking part in the public conversation. My point is that a longer schooling might be helpful because the candidate who is not apt to it leaves (if not the (very) ambitious teaching environment fleece him.

Regards,

Jan Clifford

Template

You ask why an empty sectionis needed; this question makes no sense or why would such templates then exist? The templates poitns out to content that needs to be provided - unless it is not done it can stay as a hint to that. --Joobo (talk) 19:17, 15 July 2017 (UTC)

You are speculating. I did actually read the documentation of the template. Also - there is no consensus the section needs to be there, so the least you can do to support its presence is to provide actual contents. Arnoutf (talk) 20:50, 15 July 2017 (UTC)

Hey Arnoutf,

It was totally a failure on my part to forget to add the two main terms (cultured & in vitro) to the Nomenclature section, thank you for doing this! :)

I also agree with you summary for this edit, as only mentioning the origins of 1 of 6 terms is putting undue attention to that specific name. A little context: Of all the lesser terms, clean meat used to be its own article, which was later merged. The Clean meat content was condensed and placed at the bottom of the page.

I think the information you removed is worth having in the article, but I'm not sure where best to place it. Should a clean meat section once again be added, to include only those two sentences? Or perhaps reinstated to the Nomenclature section, alongside the origins of the other terms? (A problem with that solution is that a couple of the terms are quite thinly sourced - vat-grown in particular.) Or perhaps something else, that I haven't thought of! What do you think? Greg (talk) 23:01, 8 October 2017 (UTC)

My main problem was that clean meat was the only one with so much information, but if about 3-4 of the other terms would also receive fair information, leaving vat-grown out would not be a major issue. The balance should be sufficiently there in my view. Cheers. Arnoutf (talk) 06:38, 9 October 2017 (UTC)

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. For the co-ordinators, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:35, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.
