Feedback on foundation page

Thanks for reviewing my submission of the Gosder Cherilus Foundation and for your feedback. To show the foundation's noteworthiness, I will include referenced press coverage of the foundation's ongoing projects both in Haiti and domestically. The sources are reputable and include articles, radio, and/or television coverage from USA Today, NBC News, ESPN, CNN, as well as other organizations continuing to operate in Haiti. Vertex Standard

I've been looking into a deletion that happened here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Vertex_Standard and prior to submitting it to the dispute board, just wanted to check why you had restored the redirect for Vertex Standard to Yaesu. These are two separate independently existing brands owned by different entities. Yaesu continues to exist and manufacture radio equipment. Vertex Standard is an independent company, owned by Motorola. A redirect from "Vertex Standard" to Yaesu would not be as informative as an encyclopedic article on Vertex Standard, with an historical reference to the Yaesu page.

In the interests of transparency, I am a developer who has done work for VS in the past, but am not being paid for this consideration currently and am no longer doing web dev work for them.

This is the content which has been suggested (similar to that which was deleted in September):


Vertex Standard LMR, Inc.

Vertex Standard LMR, Inc. is a global manufacturer of two-way radio land mobile communications equipment and is represented in 150 countries with over 1000 distributors and resellers.


History

The company was founded by Sako Hasegawa in Ota-ku, Tokyo, Japan in 1956 and debuted under the name of General Television Service Co. Ltd developing wireless communication equipment. In 1962 it began exporting its products and one of the early successes was the introduction of the HF SSB transceiver which went on to become an international best-seller.

In 1964, the company changed its name to Yaesu Musen Co. Ltd and after nearly a decade of solid growth, established itself stateside with the formation of Yaesu Musen USA, Inc. in Los Angeles, California during 1973. The next couple of years saw the organisation move its main production facility to a factory in Fukushima, north of Tokyo, establish companies in both the Netherlands and the UK and list on the Japanese security exchange, Jasdaq.

Expansion continued throughout the 1990s with operations opening in both Germany and Hong Kong. The purchase of Standard Communications from Japanese organisation Marantz, resulted in the formation of Standard Co. Ltd, a domestic sales company in Japan. With the further acquisition of Standard Horizon, a key player in the international overseas marine radio market, the company once again changed name, this time to Vertex Standard Co. Ltd in 2000.

Subsequent developments included the establishment of Vertex Standard operations in Suzhou, China (2003) and Melbourne, Australia (2006) while securing ISO 9001, 9002 and 14000 approvals at its production facilities.

In 2008 Motorola Inc. acquired an 80 per cent controlling interest in the company through a joint venture with Vertex Standard and Tokogiken, a privately-held Japanese company headed by Jun Hasegawa. The move gave Vertex Standard access to Motorola’s global distribution channels and resources which present considerable opportunities for the company to drive growth and position itself more favourably to deliver new and innovative two-way radio solutions for professionals around the world.

The joint venture was dissolved in January 1, 2012 and the company changed its name to Vertex Standard LMR, Inc. and operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of Motorola Solutions with headquarters in Tokyo, Japan lead by Craig Chenicek, Vice President and General Manager.

From memory, I looked at this because I saw the user name 'Vertex Standard' which is a violation of the user name policy in that users are supposed to be individuals not organizations. I then looked at what that login have been editing and saw it was scheduled for speedy deletion..... I restored the redirect to stopthe speedy deletion.

Thanks so much for your really helpful links to the tutorials and other resources. They really cemented the work I've already done, and made it a bit easier to put it all together!

It's a pity the tute isn't run by default when a new user creates an account. I realise we don't want to overwhelm people, but it really would have been helpful for me, and I suspect it would be for others too. Unless, of course, it already is offered, and I just ignored it. Stranger things have happened.

Feedback Help

My issue wasn't finding the filename of a functional image, it was finding the filename of an image whose link was somehow corrupted. What I was wondering is: where are the images associated with an article stored, and how can one see their filenames listed?

Assuming the file name was correct at one time; you can go back in the history to find the correct filename. Ariconte, I really appreciate your edits and help. I didn't think anyone would be reviewing what I was drafting in my own space so I was worried when I got your comment that something else I've posted was problematic. I rushed to see your comment to fix my error and (being new to the site) I lost the past 2 hours of work on the article, which really sucks. Also it was really disappointing to just have negative comments on what I was working on, about two things I was doing wrong. I know I'm doing a lot of things wrong, like any new person, but I've been working on this all day about some guy I've never heard of before. I thought I was generally doing a good job with it (not perfect, but better then a lot of pages I've seen) and really helping out build our historic knowledge, but after hearing just about the things I was doing wrong, I didn't feel too enthused anymore. The extended ellipse made me think you were hiding the phrase "which sucks really badly" the first time I read it, instead of just the cultural difference it probably really is. Both of your comments were very true and will absolutely help strengthen the piece in the long term and me as an editor, which I really appreciate. But I did want to reach back to you in hopes of encouraging a better way of wrapping the message. Everyone feels bad when they're criticized, I'm sure you know exactly what I'm feeling, and I don't want your great efforts in helping new users to accidentally be pushing them away. I'm sure an experienced user would have just accepted the comments and thought nothing of it, but the hurdles to being a good writer here are really high for someone starting out. I hope us having a discussion can help both of us in the future (even if it doesn't feel really happy right now). I certainly did not mean to offend! When you answer a feedback that person's user page get added to your watchlist.... so you often notice edits to the page. I saw it had changed and thought I could help by the two edits I made.... minor contributions. The note I left on your talk page was possibly too blunt; but lots of biographies get deleted because of lack of sources to show notability. It is a shame when a editor spends a lot of effort and the article does not get accepted.
I would suggest deleting the IMDB reference. The NY Parks reference is a good one. I have found others:

Ariconte, I really do appreciate the suggestions and see that it came from a good place, just being a new user and all I'm not used to culture and my heart sorta dropped to only hear the negatives. I know it's not a great article, but I thought it was at least a good start and showed that this was a notable person where citatable material does exist (even if I don't have access to a lot of the type Wikipedia feels are trustworthy).
Thanks for the research and other leads, but unfortunately library's aren't open when I have time I can devote to the site. I'll put them in the talk page and hopefully someone else who has access to a library can track them down and build on the data. In this day and age it's so crazy that the law is generally that you have to physically walk into a building to have access to history that has already been digitized. It seems like we've got our work cut out for us, since Wikipedia wants establishment information and the greedy establishment likes paywalls. Where do you normally go online to get around this conundrum for this type of information? I did not delete the article, but I moved it here so that I don't loose the work again when someone comments on my talk page

I asked the editor that I thought originally deleted the page about my copy, and he said it was alright. I also asked an editor in the theater community that has been around for a while, and I'm waiting to get his response before posting, since I know nothing about theater.
I honestly appreciate the help. I do suggest that when talking to new users, try to couch the corrections with a few positive things to keep them happy and it might help keep them involved for longer.

Good idea to do the page in a sub-page of your user page.

Syntax Help

I am sorry but I do not think any of the sources are reliable sources. You need to find articles in magazines, newspapers, or books that are independent of the Openbiz Cubi developers and users. Foulksrath Castle

I am not sure how this works so I will just go ahead and state my case.

I recently edited and updated the entry for Foulksrath Castle. I added relevant information regarding it's history and some other information reference the original founders.

Nothing of what I added is copyrighted. In addition I removed the part about the current owner claiming to have seen ghosts as it is inaccurate.

I intend to add a lot more information as I learn more.

Well as far as the comments about the current owner seeing ghosts etc goes the only source I can give is myself as I both own and live in Foulksrath Castle and have not seen any Ghosts. The other information iincluded in my edits I have uncovered in my research.
Most of the information is just general information about the building which is again from what I can see myself.
Some of the history comes from histories/pamphlets written over a hundred years ago which I have looked for on the internet but can't find any copyright information about it. As far as I know any copyright on these publications will have expired by now anyway.
I didn't start the page for Foulksrath Castle but as the Owner and occupier of the actual building and grounds I feel that I have access to certain information that is not available to others. I should have the ability to ensure that the information posted on this page is as accurate as possible. Additionally, I feel that if the information added or edited by others is inaccurate that I should be allowed to remove it.

Hi again, References you might provide do not have to be 'on the internet' but they do have to be published and accessible to others (in libraries, etc.). Information that is "not availble to others" is sure to violate the original research policy. If the castle is truly notable, I'm sure there are references to it in Irish history sources.
Please also read the conflict of interest guideline. I would encorage you to enter a paragraph in the talk page of the castle declaring your relation to the castle and your awareness of the COI guideline. Regards, Ariconte (talk) 22:51, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

I would be grateful if you could help fix the footnote errors for my contribution. They concern formatting/style for footnotes number 7, 19, and 20. I am not sure what the issue is. Thank you again for your diligence and help. My other question is what is there to be verified in this Wikipedia entry in terms of sourcing? There is a banner at the top that states sources have to be verified or additional sources should be provided. Also, there is a banner concerning proper style. Invitation

There is a backstage pass coming up to be followed by an editathon in the State Library of New South Wales on 23 November. This is the first time that an Australian cultural institution has opened its doors to us in this way and will be a special opportunity because the Library is providing: one of its best rooms; its expert curators (along with their expertise and their white gloves); a newly launched website (containing new resources); and of course, items from its collection (including rare and usually unavailable material) which we can look at, learn from, and use, to improve WP articles. For example, on the chosen topic (Australia and WWI), the Library holds many diaries and manuscripts from the period.

As you can see from the Library's project page, they have connected this editathon with their own work. They have already set out a wide range of resources to make things easier for us. Regarding your edit on Inner Mongolia

Regarding this edit, I'm not quite sure what you were intending to do. There wasn't anything wrong with that template. The Wikimedia Foundation is currently running a consultation on the value and planning process of Wikimania, and is open until 18 January 2016. What's new?

A decision has been made about how the Recent Changes filtering scheme will affect current ORES beta feature users. When this new filtering system rolls out as part of the beta, it will replace the current ORES display on the Recent Changes page. That means the automatic color coding, the red “r” symbol and the “hide probably good edits” filter will go away, to be replaced by the new, more nuanced set of filters and user-defined color coding. All other pages that have ORES features, like Watchlist and Related Changes, will remain as they are now for ORES beta users. We think those pages could also benefit from the new filtering system. But we'll wait to see how users react to the beta test—and make any necessary changes—before we start spreading the new UI around. That's the plan as it currently stands. As always, please let us know if you have any thoughts, in any language.

Review of initial updates on Wikimedia movement strategy process

The Wikimedia movement is beginning a movement-wide strategy discussion, a process which will run throughout 2017. For 15 years, Wikimedians have worked together to build the largest free knowledge resource in human history. During this time, we've grown from a small group of editors to a diverse network of editors, developers, affiliates, readers, donors, and partners. Today, we are more than a group of websites. We are a movement rooted in values and a powerful vision: all knowledge for all people. As a movement, we have an opportunity to decide where we go from here.

This movement strategy discussion will focus on the future of our movement: where we want to go together, and what we want to achieve. We hope to design an inclusive process that makes space for everyone: editors, community leaders, affiliates, developers, readers, donors, technology platforms, institutional partners, and people we have yet to reach. There will be multiple ways to participate including on-wiki, in private spaces, and in-person meetings. You are warmly invited to join and make your voice heard.

The immediate goal is to have a strategic direction by Wikimania 2017 to help frame a discussion on how we work together toward that strategic direction.

Overview #2 of updates on Wikimedia movement strategy process

As we mentioned last month, the Wikimedia movement is beginning a movement-wide strategy discussion, a process which will run throughout 2017. This movement strategy discussion will focus on the future of our movement: where we want to go together, and what we want to achieve.

Regular updates are being sent to the Wikimedia-l mailing list, and posted on Meta-Wiki. Each month, we are sending overviews of these updates to this page as well. Sign up to receive future announcements and monthly highlights of strategy updates on your user talk page.

We invite you to join the movement strategy conversation (now through April 15)

This message, "We invite you to join the movement strategy conversation (now through April 15)", was sent through multiple channels by Gregory Varnum on 15 and 16 of March 2017 to village pumps, affiliate talk pages, movement mailing lists, and MassMessage groups. A similar message was sent by Nicole Ebber to organized groups and their mailing lists on 15 of March 2017. This version of the message is available for translation and documentation purposes

Dear Wikimedians/Wikipedians:

Today we are starting a broad discussion to define Wikimedia's future role in the world and develop a collaborative strategy to fulfill that role. You are warmly invited to join the conversation.

There are many ways to participate, by joining an existing conversation or starting your own:

Track A (organized groups): Discussions with your affiliate, committee or other organized group (these are groups that support the Wikimedia movement).

Track B (individual contributors): On Meta or your local language or project wiki.

This is the first of three conversations, and it will run between now and April 15. The purpose of cycle 1 is to discuss the future of the movement and generate major themes around potential directions. What do we want to build or achieve together over the next 15 years?

We welcome you, as we create this conversation together, and look forward to broad and diverse participation from all parts of our movement.

  • We will release the ⧼eri-rcfilters-beta-label⧽ beta option on Portuguese and Polish Wikipedias March 28. This beta option adds powerful filtering and other tools as well as an improved filtering interface to the Recent Changes page (and Recent Changes Linked). To try out these new tools on these two wikis, go to the Beta tab of the Preferences page (after the 28th) and select ⧼eri-rcfilters-beta-label⧽.
  • In the weeks following the initial release to Polish and Portuguese Wikipedias, the New Filters for Edit Review beta will go out to the following list of Wikipedias in waves (schedule to be done):
    • Persian, Dutch, Russian, Turkish, Czech Wikipedias and Wikidata. [16]

Recent changes

  • <math> <hiero> <score> <syntax> <source> <ref> shortcuts are now working on Flow visual editing mode. Type a shortcut in the visual editing mode will open the control panel for the chosen option. [19]
    • Concerning <ref>, footnotes will be automatically included at the end of the message, unless if they are displayed elsewhere in the message by the appropriate template.
  • Flow has been removed from Metawiki. [20]

Future changes

  • The way you switch between wikitext and the visual editors in the desktop view has changed. It will be a drop-down menu. This is the same as in the mobile view. [21]

Hi Ariconte. Remember the 2014 USyd Wikibomb? It was so helpful having you and other experienced Wikipedians there. Sydney Uni Press has just organized another similar editathon [22], and if you're free, I'm sure they'd appreciate your involvement. Latest news from the Wikimedia Collaboration team, about Notifications, Flow and Edit Review Improvements. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you.

What's new?

The fourth fiscal quarter began the first of this month, and Collaboration Team has begun work on our new quarterly goals. In the coming months, we'll be working to release the New Filters for Edit Review beta on all wikis and then to improve the beta as much as possible based on user feedback. On that score, we're planning a round of user interviews on the new tools in May to get detailed information about usability and usefulness. If you've tried the new features and have thoughts, please share them with us in any language.

Our other focus right now is to look at what changes will be needed to spread the new filtering interface to other review pages, especially Watchlist. We're also exploring how to incorporate the tools we didn't include in the new interface in this round, like the Tag Filters, time-frame selector and Namespace filter.

Edit Review Improvements [More information • Help pages]

Recent changes

  • New Filters for Edit review are now available on Polish, Portuguese, Persian, Russian and Turkish Wikipedias as a Beta feature. French Wikipedia and Mediawikiwiki have the filters as a Beta feature too, but without the quality and intent filters. [23]
  • Special:RecentChangesLinked now displays a message when no results are found for a given combination of filters. [24]

Problems

  • Polish Wikipedia is experiencing an issue with predictions (quality and intent filters using ORES). The different predictions are in conflict. An edit can be considered as "good" and "bad" at the same time, and the filter levels are somewhat redundant. We have formulated a plan to address this and are working on a fix, which is deployed progressively on Polish Wikipedia. [25]
  • The issue on Polish Wikipedia is shared by a few other wikis: Dutch, Czech and Hebrew, and Wikidata. The deployment for those wikis has been postponed to Tuesday, May 9. Wikis without this predictions problem have been deployed or will be deployed with no change on the schedule. [26]
  • Interestingly, the "problem" with those wikis is that they perform better than we anticipated. Once the fix is in place, the tools will work with particular simplicity on these wikis.

Future changes

  • English Wikipedia and all wikis without ORES prediction services will get the New Filters for Edit review on Monday, April 24. [27]
  • All remaining wikis will get the New Filters for Edit review on Tuesday, May 9. [28]
  • Wikidata edits will be added as a type of change on New Filters for Edit review. [29]

Notifications [More information • Help pages]

  • Notifications badges were overlapping other tabs on Internet Explorer 11 and Firefox 3.6, using MonoBook skin. This is now fixed. [30]

Flow [More information • Help pages]

  • Flow is now available as a Beta feature on French Wikiversity. [31]
  • All Flow documentation is now available on one page gathering all information, to help users to search for an information.
  • Flow's AbuseFilter integration now allows blocking a particular user from participating on a talk page, or any topic within it. [32]
