Cool FAQ about bubbles maps; one issue you don't mention is the location of bubbles - in every map i have seen, the bubbles in canada and the US are always located as close to their mutual border as possible - making it impossible to see properly without zooming in fully. Commons

I don't understand your reasoning as to why the maps shouldn't be uploaded to Commons. (1) They're not blank templates - so what? What has that got to do with anything? They show information that can be of interest to Wikipedias in any language. (2) They need to be updated every year - so update them on Commons! +Angr 23:44, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Problems!

The "bubble map" does not have an entry at WP. Better, surely, to use a recognised numeric-mapping technique. If you make a mapping method up then that's similar to WP:OR. This is an encyclopedia, not a place to invent new ways of representing information.

Also, if you're going to invent this new technique, then I think the area of the bubble should be in proportion to the number being represented. The "bubble map" for millet production seems to under-represent India's production.

The justification given for the method/rules of this technique of representing numeric info seems faulty to me. If people have colour vision problems why use different colours when one would do?

I agree that "bubble maps" are problematic. This FAQ neither explains well nor justifies the use of so-called "bubble maps." I have found a few "bubble maps" around WP, and they tend to be quite confusing and even misleading at first glance. So far, they appear to be created by only one user, User:Anwar_saadat, who has been blocked indefinitely. Rather than take the time to justify their removals, I'm going to follow WP:BOLD and immediately remove any inappropriate ones I come across in the future. If someone starts defending them, then let the discussion begin. I'll return here if I find a useful one. These bubble maps are a mess. In addition to the odd geographic implications mentioned above, the resolution is unacceptable. Looking at this map, can anyone tell me how much cassava is produced by Benin or Togo? Or Rwanda or Burundi? Density maps can easily fit these needs, with "100%" density corresponding to the output of the top producer. MrPMonday (talk) 18:45, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Within-country bubble location

I have often found these maps misleading and confusing. For example, why are the bubbles centered over national capitals rather than in the center of a respective country (or, better yet, over the principle region in question within a particular country [e.g., if the state of California produces more figs than any other state, place the bubble over California rather than Washington, DC]). Visually, these maps seem to imply some very strange things (e.g., Washington, DC is a center of fig production in the US?). I do not see any reason why the bubbles are placed over national capitals. Could someone shed some light on this, as it seems like a strange thing to do and looks strange in large countries with non-central capitals (US, India, China, etc.). — DIEGO ^talk 18:27, 30 October 2010 (UTC)
