I am again participating in Wikipedia somewhat reluctantly because I had a bad experience uploading what I considered valuable listings of *.pdf files with links to 2,000+ railroads and 14,900 ports worldwide (167,000+ URL hypertext links) in 2008. In spite of that bad experience, I have decided to jump back in by editing individual Wikipedia webpages on Japanese railroads at the moment. I also provide my Ports Internet listings to the Wikipdia associated Captain Wiki webpage. They are treating me right and I will continue supporting them. However, if you treat me the same way I was treated in 2008, I will sever my contacts with you. Please advise.

I'm afraid that such a note is the equivalent of telling a kid not to stuff beans in his nose. My intent was to communicate the point in a subtler mannerer through use of the courtesy blanking disclaimer to do away with the entirety of discussion on the topic. 1. Nowhere in your user page does it state that you're an admin, aside from the 'Admins open to recall' category at the bottom - you should consider adding a userbox like, well, every other admin I've seen on Wikipedia, 2. You should justify your actions, like, well, every other admin I've seen on Wikipedia (bar a few) - your reason that you 'courtesy blanked out of respect for monsieur gerbil' doesn't really say much, and, at face value, is not an acceptable reason (who is monsieur gerbil, what is it that you're trying to say?). 3. Even if an admin did the blanking, they could be wrong, made a mistake etc and as such unless you can explain why you're blanking and why it's necessary I have to stand by my reversion - if you really are an admin you should know about assuming good faith - how am I suppose to understand your actions if they aren't explained, and frankly don't make any sense - you seem to be partisan to Crotchety Old Man's stance on this, I take it you don't think the ^{heavily sourced} gerbil rumour should appear on Richard Gere's article, and that's fine, but by blanking a talkpage discussion you are, in, effect, edit warring. OK, 1. no thank you, this is my prerogative; 2. including the term "courtesy blanking" is sufficient to imply WP:Courtesy blanking; 3. yes, I could be wrong and yes, all my administrative actions are up for review. Spinosaurus reconstruction by Stromer

Hi, Could you confirmed me that this picture [1] you imported has really been made by Stromer himself? Because I have a scan of the article of Stromer (1915) and I have not seen it there. If yes, on what page of what article does it appear? I read somewhere that it could be the reconstruction of Spinosaurus by Lapparent and Lavocat (1955) based on the material that Stromer published earlier. However, I have got that picture (taken from the book of Piveteau) and no human skeleton is appearing...

It was consistent with other templates, and they correctly render the sig. I don't know enough about template syntax to decipher what might be the problem ˉˉ^anetode╦╩ 14:10, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

I got it... twinkle is passing our usernames in as parameter 1, which apparently the template author intended to be as a space for extra comments like {{W-short|Have a nice day}} but twinkle does {{W-short|Gigs}}. So actually my signature adjustment was OK, it just had no effect on what I was trying to fix. We can either take out that parameter substitution or we can get twinkle fixed. Probably best to do the latter in case anyone is using it the way it was originally intended. Gigs (talk) 14:15, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

Regarding the upload of the image, it was not taken for marketing reasons. It is the work of a member of the Philippine police, and has been released to the public. As it is a rare image, it is very difficult to replace. I ask you to remove the deletion tag.

I have no vendetta against that account, I only came across them at the AfD. After I blocked one of the shared accounts yesterday and then came across the thread again on ANI today the penny slowly dropped that these accounts may be sockpuppets. I wasn't sure to start with, but after careful examination came up with sufficient evidence to file. The case is certainly not flimsy, so "shit" and "paranoid" are far from accurate descriptors. Spinosaurus

Sorry for the very long delay Anetode, and thank you very much for your swift response. I am almost sure this is not an illustration made by Stromer in his monograph of Spinosaurus. I really believe it is the reconstruction made by Lapparent and Lavocat in 1955. Therefore, I am not sure whether this has still a free copyright in the U.S. Another thing. Is it impossible to use this picture, as well as the drawing of the vertebrae of Spinosaurus by Stromer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Spinosaurus_vertebrae.png), in the French Wikipedia??? I am a little disappointed those illustrations have got a U.S. copyright while they are made by European scientists (Stromer is German and Lapparent and Lavocat are French...). Concerns on deleting Nimi Visuals article

Greetings, I understand Your concerns however, I don't see a point of removing "Nimi Visuals" entry - especially as - bluntly - it could be seen by some people as some kind of black ops. In whole article we tried to keep objectivity necessary for encyclopedic titles, moreover I doubt that even if there were ones that one could eventually consider to match this G11 whatever criteria it didn't apply to whole entry - You have to admit it's plainly very little possible.

As ain't very skilled with Wiki system(frankly to say I find it difficult - even as software developer), I would like to humbly request Your help in order to retrieve this entry or propose how this entry could be written not to possibly violate any of Wikipedia regulations.

Knowledge should be highest goal of all beings - by so I believe You will understand my worries on wiping out encyclopedic existence of project which is only such application for Microsoft Windows, leaving users only information on some commercial applications.

Electric Retard

Hey mate, thanks for the message. I understand the article had been deleted for its non-notability in the past, but I thought I'd have an attempt at putting the article up in the category of "shock site" as well as "webcomic", the former it seems to be a lot more notable for. The comic's following seems to have increased over the last few years, especially here in Australia. Electric Retard seems to be a much more notable subject than a lot of other webcomic articles that have been left up on Wikipedia. Why haven't they been deleted if Electric Retard has to be? Though I believe that the article was correctly deleted, others believe that the addition of an unreliable blog and an unreliable student newspaper article constitute the significant changes needed to ignore CSD G4. If I were to undelete the article, I would have done so after the above request from its author. Thanks for having the backbone to not undelete the article. A look at the Google cache tells me that it best remains deleted for failing verifiability and thus compromising Wikipedia's integrity with such distasteful, valueless sources as realplatform.com. Just wanted to reply to your e-mail. A few points -

re " not-so-veiled accusation " - Look, the picture in question was really, really bad. I find it a little hard to believe that anyone could look at it and not think "this is a ridiculous picture". Notice that my sentiments were shared by a number of people on the talk page. As this character is someone who incurs a lot of hate, I thought it likely that someone who disliked him might have picked it on purpose. Was this such a wild connection to make? Notice, that when I made the "veiled accusation" I used the word "likely" (i.e. I didn't accuse anyone explicitly). If you did pick the image, and you picked it in good faith, then please understand that I ain't got no beef with you. I might, however, caution that images of historically important individuals should be given some assessment for aesthetic appeal. Images that are grossly unappealing should probably be avoided.

re " invalid " - I'm not trying to disparage handicap people. Frankly, I don't think using the term "invalid" in relation to handicap is as politically incorrect as the term "cripple" (but let's not debate semantics). That you bring up Roosevelt seems absurd as you appear to completely miss the historical significance of the efforts taken to conceal the mobility impaired appearance of a fully competent head of state out of fear of mass prejudice. Roosevelt came to terms with his disability and was lauded for the courage to make "uncensored" appearances before the public late in his administration. Reeve toured the country doing basically the same thing.

Guess what, most photos of people who use wheelchairs will show very clear indication that a wheelchair is in the frame. Photographs of blind people may catch them not making eye contact with the camera. This is reality: it's documented and we compile it in articles. Not sure you're really trying to see my point. Perhaps if I make an analogy that avoids the hot button "disability" issue. Imagine if Tom Cruise's info box image was him standing next to basket ball players, or in some context that emphasized how short he is. I might protest at that as well. Now, I have nothing against short people, but fact is, a lot of people see "shortness" as unflattering (though you'll probably say I'm "projecting" again). We shouldn't try to "hide" the fact Cruise is short, but at the same time, choosing a photo that places a lot of emphasizes on it seems unfair. Does that seem like a radical idea?

And FYI, I'm more than aware of how FDR treated his disability. Furthermore, having met Reeve on one of his "tours", I'm more than well aware of how he took up the role as an ambassador for those in his position.

Not a bigot per se, just very backwards in your views of disability and public perception. For one, your Cruise analogy is awful - the photograph of Yassin wasn't emphasizing his disability, that's simply what the man looked like. I'm not at all trying to argue with your views, you're entitled to them. So long as they don't spill over to some sort of bizarre censorship of wikipedia biographies like the kind you're promoting. Then I do have a problem, and I doubt I'm the only one.

Madonna images

Anetode, can you please tell me what are you exactly doing with all the overlapping uploads of the Madonna album images? — Legolas ^(talk2me) 05:07, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

I started off after noticing a number of high resolution covers uploaded by MindyHall. In most cases these were simple deletions, but I noticed that there was room for improvement in the image quality of the relevant articles. So, in order to provide a better reference 300x images I looked over all of the uploads and chose which files would indeed benefit from PNG vs. JPG compression, which image file title names were confusing, etc., hoping to also provide a sort of example for MindyHall as to how to properly contribute.

From a third party standpoint, however, I can see that the massive uploading/deleting activity could be seen as confusing or even worrying. I'd like to assure you that I've gone over all of the affected pages to make sure that the images are of the highest quality, that all files have standardized fair use templates and are of the standard resolution. The concerns over the two sources appear well founded since they are the only current reference sources. The keep proponents, however, pointed to the plethora of other reputable third-party sources available on the topic. Looking over these sources I found enough information to fill out the article beyond stub status. These include books which discuss the corporate culture of M&M and lots of articles that refer to M&M's NAI. It's not a particularly interesting topic, but it satisfies WP:V requirements. Also, improvements to the article were made throughout the course of the nomination and its current revision satisfies most of the nominator's original concerns.

I'm more concerned about the Sternsjohn SPA. The contributions reveal a rather ordinary corporate spam m.o., so I assume that the person behind them is a professional. My hope is that they choose to look over policy and interact with other editors instead of just intermittently posting M&M's latest accomplishments. I also hope that the latest plastic surgery research allows for grafting wings to even-toed ungulates. ˉˉ^anetode╦╩ 05:28, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

Deleted file

Since the file was deleted and it wasn't tagged for reduction recently, there's no longer any history for me to look back on. It was tagged because of size, but the tagging for reduction didn't have anything to do with its deletion. Am not aware of any files being deleted for size; they would be reduced.

Clicking the redlink shows this:

I wish there was some way of not only notifying the uploader but posting a message on the article's talk page when an image is orphaned as so many of us deal with articles we didn't upload all of the files for. Have had files I uploaded orphaned through either edits gone wrong or vandalism--getting the notice was the only way I knew that the file was orphaned. While it hasn't (as yet) happened to me, I can imagine how confusing and irritating it must be to find article images missing and then possibly have them deleted because they were orphaned. Many people would restore the file to the page if they only knew it had been removed like this. We hope (talk) 16:37, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Now, with external software possible to add into the list, it can be seen as bad behavior. And, their claim of "biggest" collection is untrue - PortableApps holds the biggest collection of portable software. If possible, restore the article - but with those warning (put them on "citation needed" for now). CodySafe is both paid and malicious.

You appear to be attempting to use Wikipedia for promotional purposes. The Kaseya article was protected from re-creation because repeated drafts were written by contributors with a conflict of interest, contributors who were quite likely in the employ of this company. While this apparent conflict does not by itself mean that there can't be an article on the company, all article content must be referenced (by reliable, non-primary sources) and written from a neutral point of view. MSU Interview

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Please advise if you can tell me if first line of the plaque in your picture indicated "Erected 1932 By" or "Erected 1952 By". It is not visually clear to me whether it is a "3" or a "5". It seems to look like a "5".

Yet, I know the viaduct, which is now known as the Pulaski Skyway was completed in 1932, yet it was not named the General Pulaski Skyway until 1933.

The monument on which the plaque is mounted indicates General Pulaski Skyway so that inscription was made in 1933 or later.

I wasn't sure whether the plaque was indicating when the monument was erected (1952??) or when the original viaduct was erected in 1932. All of the names on the plaque are from the time that the original viaduct was conceived, designed, and finally built in the 1920s thru 1932.

I you recall exactly or approximately where that monument is located on the north bound Pulaski Skyway, I would appreciate it. I would like to take a look at it some day.Wondering55 (talk) 19:42, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

In your edit summary on 18:00 21 May 2013, you said your upload of the "alternate version" has a higher fidelity ([4]) WP:NFCCP says to use lower fidelity; all of your uploads appear to be higher fidelity versions of the ones you replace. And regarding Songs in A Minor, what "digital copies distributed by the record label" are you referring to? There are no comertial informations, Fundacio Vila Casas has 5 museums in very special buildings, everything donated by Antonio Vila Casas, and I wanted to create articles explaining the purpose of the foundation, and what is the foundation doing for the society.

The information is written exactly equal than Fundacio Miro, so we have more or less the same kind of Foundation.

I am having some issues with the terms and conditions and I want to point out that I don't really get why Fundacio Miró can have such an article in Wikipedia and Fundacio Vila Casas cannot.

Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews

Hello Anetode. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.
