About Scientology and Anonymous

I realize that you view the current phenonenom as an 'online click" but Anonymous's attacks on Scientology have warrented public media attention, I do think that for the sake of wisdom and preserving a bit of history as the way-back machine half of Wikipedia tries to do should warrent this.

Also, to those such as myself of whom are curious as to who and what these videos are about and stand for, it would be nice to have a non-objective base to refer to and see the truth, without a bias to one side or the other as is the legacy of Wikipedia

On the point of Notoriety, I do believe that warrenting the attention of several respected news organizations is something to take note of. ABC, MSNBC and FOX have all given good attention to this topic and it is, indeed, something to take note of.

I am going to repost this and try to tweak it so you may agree with me.

A topic for which this criterion is deemed to have been met by consensus, is usually worthy of notice, and satisfies one of the criteria for a stand-alone article in the encyclopedia. Verifiable facts and content not supported by multiple independent sources may be appropriate for inclusion within another article.

This topic has sources, has reliability, has verifiability and has received signifigant media coverage in the form of both the news paper, online paper, and video specials. I would argue that the presumability of if this topic is notable is less one of fact and more one of opinion, a valid opinion that wikipedia can not cover every little TRIVIAL thing in the world. However, a group that has openly stated to an offical attack on an established religion is something of Signifigants. (Sorry, forgot to sign)Kenji000 (talk) 22:14, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Images/Logos

Please stop removing the logos and images from the site. Most of the images were ok, and the ones that wern't were getting fix. When you remove them, it makes more work for us to do. The console pictures are free pictures, while the games are able to go on the page. And don't delete my logo again please. DJS--DJS24 (talk) 16:44, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

WikiProject Xbox

Hey, I understand why you deleted those images, but I would like to request that in the future when deleting images that you do so in a way that is less damaging to the page. I noticed that with several images that were not deleted (like the game covers) you put a ":" instead of commenting it out. That caused a good portion of the page to "come unglued" and left any image parameters such as size and alignment on the page as stranded code. I would recommend commenting out all non-free/deleted images instead of just the deleted ones. Maybe you could do like "<!--commented out non-free image-->" or something. Just a friendly request from a fellow user.
Also, questions about two images. Do Image:Xbox 360 portal logo.png or Image:Wikiproject Xbox logo.png violate copyright laws? I don't think they do, but if they do, don't bother removing them. Just let me know on my talk page and I'll remove them and put db-author on the images. Thanks for the help. Thingg 16:59, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

I understand you think you are the chief of the image police and that you don't worry about messing up pages that are under construction and that by the way is vandalism. Re: xbox live logo free.png

You can copyright different fonts and color schemes? All I did was find a font that looked remotely similar and used close coloration. I'm not seeing how that's copyright infringement, but again, I'm not too good with copyright laws. I was under the impression that you can't copyright color schemes, though I am aware that you can copyright fonts (I didn't use the font they used; I used Copperplate Gothic Bold.) Does that still count as copyright infringment? I'm not sure, so your help is appreciated. Thingg 18:08, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
P.S. I'm not trying to be defensive here, I'm just honestly confused as to how that image was copyright infringement.

Well, I guess I misunderstood the laws. Thanks for explaining it to me. Is the present version of User:Scepia/Xbox Live ok? Thingg 19:06, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

Image:Aston mertin lake.jpg

Hello Anetode. Let me start off by saying that Image:Aston mertin lake.jpg is not an unfree image. It was completely my own creation. The image is made up of 3 actual images, (all taken by me). The Aston Martin car itself, comes from a photograph I took in Providence, RI. The other desert looking image comes from a pond, which is near my house (again taken by me). And finally the mountain in the back is actually an image taken during my travels in Kentucky, Harrodsburg, KY to be exact. So, please remove the unfree image tag. I appreciate you cooperation. - Milk's Favorite Cookie 21:50, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Malaysiatic

Hi Anetode, I hastily created a page under the name 'Malaysiatic' & it has subsequently been deleted. What were your initial thoughts on this word? Were they 'of or pertaining to Malaysia'? If they were then we both agree on the meaning for this word. About my userpage

Hi, I saw you recently made edits to a portion of my userpage. For future reference, I would appreciate being contacted directly before having changes made to my personal space. Thanks for your understanding. Somnabot (talk) 16:14, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

On my page..you wrote.....

"Your contributions history shows that you have been aggressively cross-posting. Although the Arbitration Committee has ruled that "The occasional light use of cross-posting to talk pages is part of Wikipedia's common practice."1, such cross-posting should adhere to specific guidelines. In the past, aggressively worded cross-posting has contributed towards an Arbitration Committee ruling of disruptive behavior that has resulted in blocks being issued. It is best not to game the system, and instead respect Wikipedia's principle of consensus-building, by ceasing to further crosspost, and instead allowing the process to reflect the opinions of editors that were already actively involved in the matter at hand."

Reflect the opinions of editors already actively involved??? That's almost laughable. We're talking about people who horde sites like dictators. They won't allow facts to be added because they don't like them. This is hardly honest involvement. I have WANTED to contribute FOREVER but corrupt admins keep deleting out FACTUAL REASONABLE INFO because they don't like it. What you're failing to address is the real problem...that Wikipedia pisses off thousands if not millions around the world everyday because corrupt admins get to CONTROL ENTIRE WIKIPEDIA SITES. Following the process gets you NOWHERE when NOBODY is listening to you. Please come to some realization and resonate some understanding here. 70.114.38.167 (talk) 18:55, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

I noticed that you have requested that the picture I made be deleted over at Commons. I don't really know what to think about the image policy that is in place here, but I have to say the contact I have had with it has been, discouraging, at the very least. I feel that whenever I try to make a picture conform to the policy, there is one more hurdle to overcome and I can never fully realize the images as I would like them to be. Maybe I'm just suffering from wikiburnout, but I am getting really annoyed with the image policy here. (I thought I had finally made a version of the image that did conform to the image policy because it was not challenged for almost two weeks. I guess I was wrong.) I just don't know what to do because I feel that the policy goes way overboard in it's extent, but at the same time I realize there must be a good reason for having it. (I just don't understand why its the way it is) Ah well, go ahead and delete it. I'm not going to try to defend it. You may want to let Blackwatch21 know about it a little beforehand. I'm not trying to sound like all those wikidetractors out there, but I have to say that I will probably not contribute much more to Wikipedia as far as images go. I don't want to leave all together, but I'm getting really discouraged about Wikipedia right now. Thingg 01:35, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Yeah I understand about Wikiprojects and what they usually accomplish, but..... I don't know. I guess a lot of the reason I felt (notice the past tense) that way about that pic is the fact that it took me quite a while to make that because all I have is default image editing programs like Microsoft Paint and Microsoft Photo Editor. Yeah, you're right of course, it's just tough to see 1-2 hours of work be deleted. Oh well, maybe a few minutes of taking out vandals will lift my spirits. ;-) Thingg 01:57, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Well hello there!

Hello Anetode! I have not talked to you since I was a newbie. I see we have both warned the same editor about vandalism and now you have blocked them. Great to see we are working towards a common goal! You were the first editor to come to my aide! Great to see you again. Canyouhearmenow 01:44, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Well thank you for your kind words! I am actually going through admin coaching right now. I guess someone see's something in me! LOL I appreciate you looking at the David L Cook article. I worked my butt off to prove I could do it! Once I got over my conflict with that one editor, I really just put my mind on knowing the guidelines and applying them. If and when I do get to admin level, the one thing I want to be careful of is to not treat newbies like I was treated! I want to be a very nice person! Mendaxi_Press_Advert_1972.jpg

Accepting this image which I may have confused the correct licence requirement (now amended for review) what I don't get is how can this fall under copyright? The fair use rationale was to example the advertising campaign. I can't see how in that instance it infringes copyright when the Company itself has ceased to exist after failing. I understand copyright exists for the products and recipes that were purchased by another company which continues (hence no product names were used in the article or images). But how can something be copyrighted (like the company name (in this instance) or advertising campaign) when the company involved went bust over 20 years ago? To me that is public domain! Stepfather III is a film

Was that all that was in that article? If so, then yes, it wouldn't have survived AFD. However, AFD would have been an alert that the article needed work. Was there at least an infobox? - LA @ 10:36, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
Since it was that bad, so bad that even a stub template wouldn't have saved it, then I will let either the Films or Horror Wikiprojects deal with recreating it when they see fit. Thanks for taking time to explain this. Have a very nice day! - LA @ 10:52, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Under construction

If you put an under construction template on an article, will that let people know that a specific article is not ready for use and that the creator needs help finding info? I just created Takkō Ishimori just now, and I can't tell if I made it notable enough, so I put an under construction template under it just in case. I know you're not the best person to review such articles, but I am just asking about the under construction templates. Kitty53 (talk) 01:19, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the information on WNFU 3a. I would appreciate if you could provide an opinion on the licence listing and fair use rationale again. I believe the new fair use rationale is solid and the images are used sparingly within the context of the article visually demonstrating how Mendaxi's campaign developed, which essentially is the encyclopaedic interest as Copper (an article I’m working on) later worked with Toscani on the more famous / infamous Benetton campaign using the same photographic techniques. I respect the copyright issue and had been careful to avoid anything with specific product name as L’Oreal probably still retain copyright, although my research into the company’s bankruptcy discovered that management had disposed of certain specific products and recipes like sunstrip prior to their collapse, but not the Mendaxi name causing L’Oreal to discontinue said product brand in favour of their own names. I can only assume such product purchases were motivated to remove a competitor from market than retaining the brands in any meaningful way. I have also email L'Oreal asking about Mendaxi being a retained TMMitchbradley (talk) 05:13, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Confused

I'm kind of confused regarding the whole IfD over at commons. I mean, on the one hand, you are correct in saying that it is a derivative work in that it was inspired by a copyrighted logo, but on the other hand, is a geometric version of an "x" and an assortment of circles copyrightable? and where do you draw the line between these two? On another note, which portions of the image (or all if it) are you concerned about? Do you think there is any way I could change it to satisfy your concerns? I really do respect you and your knowledge of copyright laws, so that's why I'm asking. If your concerns are unrectifiable, I will tell the others that fact and I will end the debate by db-authoring the image. You are 100% correct when you said that there is more to a Wikiproject than a cool logo, and I am not going to let a dumb logo get in the way of improving Wikipedia. Thingg 16:29, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

TOR pages

No, no policy either way - just admin preferences. Some deal with them (like me) by deleting them if there's little or no page history when the TOR node closes, as the next person assigned that IP probably isn't the same one that opened the TOR node - and probably shouldn't be penalized with that tag on the page. If there's a history, they usually aren't deleted, just blanked or edited to get rid of the TOR references. Either way, any admin has the ability to see the deleted pages (just in case it's a joker that's turning off and on a TOR node) to permanently block them akin to an open ISP (and/or vandalism, which is more likely the case). SkierRMH (talk) 17:50, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Dvd bismarck.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Dvd bismarck.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

Fair use rationale for Image:MKArcGP.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:MKArcGP.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box.
