Images

I haven't got confirmation from the mailing list people, but for the moment I'll assume that User:Himalayan Academy Publications is indeed who they say they are and that you have permission to upload these images. Wikipedia isn't a image storage space and uploaded images should be inserted into relevant articles. Since the images are under a free license, I recommend you upload to Wikimedia Commons instead so all Wikimedia Foundation sites can use them. (This would also mean they don't neccesarily have to be used in articles if uploaded there). - Mgm|^(talk) 10:42, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Hello. I'm new at this and have been adding images to Wikipedia articles mostly for practice. Just trying to learn so I appreciate all your comments. While some of the images may be decorative, it appears to me that pictures in general do provide a service to the readers. I'm a visual reader myself. Perhaps a more careful selection of pictures would be appropriate. Discussing the idea of using images on the article's talk page before adding them, suggested by Buddhipriya below, is also the way to go. - Anantashakti 17:17, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

Namaste. Thank you for participating in Wikipedia. I have noticed some of your image contributions showing up on some of the pages I keep on my watch list. One of the pictures you uploaded is now in use on Ganesha, a page I follow, and I think the picture looks very nice there, a good illustration for a specific idea in the article.

Since you are adding quite a few images, it is possible that some concern may be raised about promotional efforts related to the organization from which the pictures are coming. Some editors are very sensitive to the problem of spam on Wikipedia. For general information on the problem of spam on Wikipedia, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Spam.

I am not accusing you of spamming, so please do not take it that way. I mention it only to let you know that in some cases others may interpret use of images that are tied to a particular source as a form of spamming.

One way to reduce the chance your images will be seen in a negative way would be to discuss the idea of using them in an article on the talk page before adding them, to test the waters. That is something that I sometimes do when I am approaching an article for the first time.

I would be happy to discuss any of these ideas with you further. Thanks again for participating!

Namaste. Thank you for the kind words and advice. Can definitely use both since I'm so new at this. It appears that I may have uploaded too many images a few days ago. Never occurred to me that this could be interpreted as spamming. Was only hoping to enhance the impact of the already existing, beautifully written articles. Uploading many pictures at once was mostly for practice, when I had some free time (I'm an academic and a scientist).

Since it appears that images uploaded to Wikipedia are to be used right away, I'll move all the unlinked images over to Wikimedia Commons. This should take care of the urgency of linking pictures to articles. I will also follow your advice about mentioning the idea of using new images in an article on its talk page. Just to clarify: uploading the pictures per se was not spamming. The spamming had to with the effective linking to the Himalayan Academy site, i.e. exploiting Wikipedia for free advertising and publicity. Your action does not scale: if you do it, why can't anyone else with another site/organization/entity to promote do it too? Hence also the issue of the pictures having encyclopedic value: merely decorating articles doesn't scale either. Thank you. So the links in the copyright statement raise a red flag about spamming. If the pictures were only copyrighted to the Himalayan Academy without links, the issue would not exist. The links can easily be removed. The only goal here is to enhance the value of already existing articles with pictures and appropriate text. It is wonderful to have access to good illustrations for the articles, and I am sure that the generosity of the Himalayan Academy will benefit many articles. I am unsure myself about the details of the rules about the various types of copyright and am benefitting from following the discussions about these examples. There is a potential problem in the use of a role account by the Himilayan Academy that also should be sorted out before too much dependency is placed on links to that account. Since Wikipedia prohibits role accounts it is possible that the account will be deleted, in which case the copyright issues perhaps will be affected. Buddhipriya 22:01, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give a page a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Saiva Siddhanta Temple. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases for registered users, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge.
