For information, there are currently 258 base IDs, each with 30 alternatives (giving 7740 possible images to display - one reason using #ifexists cannot be used!). Some of these would be duplicates but there are also some other sets (green for waterways, for example) which are not currently displayed on this table.

It's even worse than that. A station can either be:
  • major (BHF), minor (HST), or depot (DST)
  • on a vertical line or horizontal line
  • elevated, at ground level, in a tunnel, or on a bridge
  • current or former
  • heavy rail or metro
  • handicapped accessible or non-accessible
  • with or without a cross-platform transfer on either side, above, or below
  • with current or former track connections on either side of it
  • potentially having another line crossing above it, below it, or on a flat crossing; and the crossing line can have any of the foregoing attributes
  • on a single line or parallel line; and if the latter, the parallel line can have any of the foregoing attributes

Once you combine all of the above, I think there would be even more than 7,740 possibilities. Marc Shepherd (talk) 18:31, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ahuh, you noticed ;-P I've managed to remove two columns (prefixes) which were duplicated by other prefixes, and I've set to creating some of the missing icons. It is something around 260x32 at the moment iirc, but I'm trying not to actually count! It is the case though that many icons won't exist (tunnels over bridges, disabled access depots or tracks, elevated tunnels, for example) but even then there could be rather a lot. --AlisonW (talk) 19:32, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Alison sorry I forgot this is your userpage, hope you don't mind me adding the INTa and INTe rows? --Mfarrow6483 (talk) 19:44, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

np, but it was lucky this time as I was editing a section and thankfully your edit didn't crash it. Responded your talkpage already, btw. The way things are going I usually have an edit 'active' on the page for testing which new icons I've created have fed through properly (and creating them is getting too compulsive!) --AlisonW (talk) 20:02, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

i hope you won't mind, alison, but i am making a slow and steady progress using your new icons to revise & update harry's Spoorstrip ™ program. it's not easy. many of yours i am omitting out of simplicity and i am dropping some of his motorway, footpath & navigation panels. Special:Contributions/dk pintar (talk) 19:01, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem and, dare I say, that is what my collecting them all together in one place has been about. Whilst I have made quite a few pictograms myself (around 160 at my last count) I've found loads and loads of others created by different people which hadn't got consolidated into one location which could be easily referred to. Because some pictograms come from non-rail uses they won't all be required on Spoorstrip anyway ;-P --AlisonW (talk) 21:12, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

the work slowly continues on wiki-to-spoortsrip transfer. it's a bit more than i had thought [!!!] most transfers are based on what i think most people would use and definitely what i want. others can add or subtract as needed. i'll give instructions etc with the program when it is ready. New icon for your consideration[edit]

I created this: File:BSicon ENDEl2.svg to illustrate this: 52°34′03″N 0°14′45″W / 52.56749°N 0.24580°W / 52.56749; -0.24580, the eastern termination of the Nene Valley Railway in the ECML template at Peterborough. It seemed to work better than . As it turned out, the NVL does have a junction with the ECML, and so that is being used in preference for my icon, which is an orphan. You may or may not wish to adopt this icon by listing it. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 21:16, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Icon not showing up[edit]

Hey Alison, I created and uploaded mueABZdg.svg yesterday, and it's not showing up in your table under 3-way branches. I don't know if this has something to do with how I uploaded it, or if it's a problem with your table. Jack1254 (talk) 18:33, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Usually this is a cache issue; because of the way that icons are 'called' from commons to the en:WP page it can take a while before it shows up on this list in place of the CSS-suppressed blank. If commons has it though it will appear here automatically (if eventually!) --AlisonW (talk) 16:23, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

suggestions[edit]

Just a suggestion to add INT legende to the table at the bottom, and also to add a "tv" column :) - oahiyeel talk 14:10, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The legend table at the bottom is a direct lift from the manual table version; I think it would be a good idea to amend the manual one first and I'll dupe it over. If the prefix 'tv' has come into frequent use then I can add it; there was an issue over the 'v' parallel lines as they only seemed to be used on German route maps rather than frequently anywhere else (they could easily double the number of icons!) I'll take a closer look over the weekend and work out the best way of adding them without making the table too unweildly. --AlisonW (talk) 16:26, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Are you talking about the one on Wikipedia:Route diagram template/Catalog of pictograms? Someone has already added the INT legende icon awhile ago :)  - oahiyeel talk 07:10, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

uexBUE[edit]

I have created a modified version of the uBUE svg file to represent a closed crossing on a closed light-rail, but when I tried to upload this, I was presented with an error message to say the image page is protected, and linked to your comprehensive list of images for route templates. How do I get this image uploaded under the correct name? I have loaded it to uexBUEtemp for the time being. There are a number of other versions of this that I can produce, (closed crossing on an open line, for example) once the permissions issue is resolved.

Many thanks, Lynbarn (talk) 13:00, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Try uploading the images in Wikimedia Commons instead. - oahiyeel talk 15:58, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll also add that my 'consolidation' page links to all codes whether they should or shouldn't exist (why CSS is used to suppress those which don't) so it isn't always meaningful that there is link there. BSicon_uexBUE.svg would be the right filename. --AlisonW (talk) 16:30, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay thanks for the explanation - I've loaded the image directly into commons, and will add any new route icons to there. Regards, Lynbarn (talk) 21:38, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've also added a closed crossing on an open light-rail, the same for a main line, and an open crossing on a closed light-rail line. There is probably not much need for that last one, but it is there for completeness, and I'll do the main line equivalent too, to complete the set! Lynbarn (talk) 22:57, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

ABZvlr[edit]

I created this File:BSicon ABZvlr.svg to use on User_talk:Wlindley/Rail/FloridaService, my wrapup of potential Florida services... but am not 100% sure the name is correct... I used "v" for "vier" as there are four directions... advice? Wlindley (talk) 15:47, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Metro Symbol[edit]

Hi,

Can you create uKRZt from KRZt?

I need a heavy rail line crossing over a metro line. The metro is in the tunnel at that point.

Icon Naming help[edit]

I need this icon to draw a map of the Utah FrontRunner system...

Would that be correct for "operating commuter rail under, future light rail over, and station planned for both" ...? If so, what should it be called? Wlindley (talk) 19:01, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Although there is a station icon of red and blue in a ring to show both, generally most usage seems to be that you only show one. An alternative could be to show two lines vertically with a CPIC connector? --AlisonW (talk) 12:23, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The station will be an east-west light-rail platform (line to be built) on a bridge above a north-south commuter rail platform (existing in-service line, platform to be built)... so the icon needs to show the lines crossing at this point. The "dot" could be either light-blue or light-red. Please advise and I'll create. Wlindley (talk) 13:12, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unnavigable waterway icons[edit]

I have moved the icons BSIcon_ueSTRlf / rf / lg / rg to Commons, but now cannot mark them as "moved to Commons" on en:Wikipedia because it says they are transcluded by this page. I do not understand how I can now delete them from en:Wikipedia. Bob1960evens (talk) 08:49, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The way my index page is set up shouldn't preclude anything like that, though that group of icons you list are in very heavy use on rail route diagrams. I'm now checking that they are the same as the Commons versions and deleting the en:WP ones. --AlisonW (talk) 10:48, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The process of copying stuff to Commons is nearly impossible because all of the icons report This page is currently protected from editing because it is transcluded in the following page, which is protected with the "cascading" option: User:AlisonW/Rail Icons. Is there any way to stop this? Bob1960evens (talk) 09:13, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Will you please un-protect your page for a bit. We are trying to move all remaining canal icons to Commons, but I cannot even properly move ones that I have created, because they are protected by your page. Bob1960evens (talk) 10:22, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not seeing that error myself and not sure how we've got into a situation where the commons icons are in widespread use and an en:Wp version exists alongside. Anyway, protection removed temporarily in case it does actually make a difference. --AlisonW (talk) 11:03, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for removing the protection. With the exception of 3 icons, where there were problems, all of the waterways icons that were not on Commons (47 of them) have now been moved to Commons, and marked as "now on commons". It is a bit worrying that protecting your page then prevents any one else from making adjustments to the icons if they are on en:Wikipedia, but hopefully that does not apply if they are on Commons :-). Bob1960evens (talk) 15:43, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That is what was puzzling me most actually; that there could be icons in use on multiple projects that weren't as such on commons. Anyway, glad to hear the en:WP issue is sorted (and yes, commons activity doesn't affect this page at all and vice-cersa (I'm surprised it affected en:Wp in fact!) --AlisonW (talk) 15:59, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Elevated Depot icon request[edit]

This is a great system, I love it, but I found an icon I need for the Las Vegas Monorail, an elevated depot. Could you or someone else create one? Thanks! Admrb♉ltz (tclog)

I've made one and included it in your template. I've also tried to clean up some of the transitions to different sections. j.reed (talk) 05:37, 25 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Two icons needed[edit]

Could you help me. I need these icons to correct maps of two lines in The Netherlands and Belgium.

At the cross-overs were small stations (HST) at both levels. They are now closed. The present icons don't have closed stops. --Bijltjespad (talk) 14:43, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I coded and uploaded a whole set of 190 new "tower stations/stops" (have a look at commons:user:axpde/BSicons), should provide something suitable for you ;-) Axpde (talk) 15:57, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How should (or Should) lines later than the featured company be shown?[edit]

The line diagram in "Hull and Barnsley Railway" shows the Spring Bank West chord and the now closed Boothferry Park station which were built when the H&BR was no more. Should they be there? If so, how should they be shown? I presume to ask you as my tortuous search for something like "railway icons" ended up on your pages.--SilasW (talk) 17:43, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Canal, FootPath and MotorWay[edit]

Is there a similar CSS page for BSIcon Canal (water), FootPath (FP), and MotorWay symbols? or can such sections be added to generalize your page from "Rail" specific to "Route" maps? Specifically, the following icons:

  • Canal/Water icons:
  • FootPath icons:

Many images should be renamed to better fit within a standard framework, I am trying to put a consolidated guide together for all the BSicon images... LeheckaG (talk) 09:48, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was looking at some of the work you'd been doing a few days ago - useful! So far as renaming goes I thoguht about it once but got jumped on very quickly ... en is not the only project using these BSicons and though new ones have tried to keep to (semi-)logical naming schemes it hasn't always worked but, more to the point, the de.WP who started out making the route maps are very, um, 'possessive' of that history and don't want to change any, indeed some of them would like to delete all but the core set where the rest of us (en, fr, jp) have extended the ability of route maps to other situations. This is also why blank is called "leer" (de) though a few which are named after particular locations (durham jct custom, goku-koya, hamilton jct custom) might be recodable it probably isn't worth the hassle. You have also discovered my original reason for building this table - trying to find out what is already out there! --AlisonW (talk) 10:13, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Online program[edit]

Is there any online program that I can use to make rail lines using these icons? Mattokunhayashi (talk) 08:35, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Online programs response[edit]

Depends on what you mean by "online"?

  • Spoorstrip.Exe is apparently one (such) program which can be requested (downloaded) by sending an e-mail to its author: Spoorstrip at GMail dot Com.

Spoorstip only knows about certain (German) "standard" icons and templates, so does not have those which have since been added on the various Wikipedias.

  • Wikipedia:Route diagram template‎ documents some of the templates on Wikipedia which can be used to manually generate route maps for either: railway lines, motorways, footpaths, or canals/waterways.

Most of these tools (above) were originally created in Germany for the Deutsch (German) Wikipedia: De.Wikipedia.Org railway maps and have since been copied to other Wikipedia.Org language domains/sites, somewhat translated (although not completely), and extended by other *.Wikipedia.Org contributors.

I have been in the process of trying to better document the current BSicon image files and related templates. They basically work by generating a Wiki or HTML/XML table and either positioning or overlaying image icons within that table (via nested tables); the templates hide much of their "inner workings" so that from a Wiki contributor's view - there is one "Infobox"-like table containing templates which generate rows by furnishing them with the "root" portion of "Commons:BSicon *.svg" icon image filenames as parameters. I work on route maps for the (2) current and a few historic railways in Alaska as well as a some of the current railways in Northern Ohio.

If you can post which routes you are documenting or mapping, and what you have to start or work with, we can probably post links (to examples or specifics) to get you started.LeheckaG (talk) 09:52, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

From your user and talk pages, presuming that you are interested in documenting Japanese rail lines?

My guess is that one of the (foreign language) Wikipedias probably already have several Japan railway route maps.

The most common BSicon *.svg icon image file is the "blank" one: Commons:Image:BSicon leer.svg and Commons:Image:BSicon eleer.svg are redirects to Commons:Image:BSicon .svg

Searching for "BSicon .svg":

The Wikipedias with many (100+) routemaps are:

although some (like Japan) Wikipedias may have or probably translated both BSicon *.svg filenames and BS* template names locally?

BSicon leer.svg

BSicon eleer.svg:

You can walk through the usage trees to figure out what some call an "Image:", "Template:", and what some may have renamed the "BS*" templates names to locally. LeheckaG (talk) 11:03, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As a JAWP user, I can answer two of your questions.
  • I add ja: to the list above that have more than 100 routemaps. BSicon_.svg or leer are not used to fill blanks in localised ja:Template:BS3, instead, fixed width blanks are given (currently 20px). The modificatoin was done in order to answer requests of browsing on mobile phones. Seeing the source could be better than my explanation to know what we have done.
  • I have been working on making and transplanting routemaps of Japanese railways both in ENWP and JAWP. If you are interested in Japanese railway, tell me more on your interest here or my talk page. Maxima m (talk) 08:26, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I looked at ja:Template:BS3 briefly, it transcludes ja:Template:BS-overlay (for the 3 positional parameters). ja:Template:BS-overlay sets the "width" and transcludes ja:Template:Superimpose if a 2nd positional parameter is defined using Image:BSicon leer.svg if the 1st positional parameter is undefined; else (2nd. positional parameter is undefined) it only emits an icon when the 1st. positional parameter is defined. So omitting the blank images saves some download bandwidth for maps (to cellular mobile telephones and other low-bandwidth connections). "Smarter" ja:Template:BS-overlay code would skip transcluding ja:Template:Superimpose if the 1st positional parameter was blank.
On Commons: Image:BSicon leer.svg and Image:BSicon eleer.svg are redirects to Image:BSicon .svg).
On ja: is there a Category: or way to locate the various route map templates? Besides the ja: "What Links Here" equivalent for the ja:Template:BS3 ?

LeheckaG (talk) 02:08, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"What links here" of ja:Template:BSpx must be the way to locate ALL routemaps. See here. No category is made to locate/store/include routemaps using BS icons. And ja:Category:経路図テンプレート is the category for BS templates. Maxima m (talk) 09:32, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Split[edit]

This page broke mediawiki (sorry!) by having so many includes so I've now split it into two pages and each of those incorporates multiple sub-pages so it should be a lot easier to maintain in future as well as a little easier / faster to use. I'm currently checking for new icons that have been created over the last couple of months; let me know if you can't fine it on here. --AlisonW (talk) 11:41, 5 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New rail icons needed[edit]

I could use a little help making a new rail icon. I tried doing it myself, but I couldn't figure out a way to make it look nice. The icon I would most like is something like the opposite of uHSTCC which I guess means utHSTCC. I would be using it for the Skinker station of the St. Louis MetroLink Blue Line which is an at-grade alignment that dives underground for the station. If that can be done, I also would like to have utHSTCCa and utHSTCCe icons for Forsyth and University City-Big Bend stations, respectively, or they might be easy enough then to make myself. Thanks. --Millbrooky (talk) 22:21, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A seperate icon just for a station that's underground but surface tracks on both sides? The C'n'C-icons are hard enough to perceive when displayed 20x20px, so I don't see any reason for such an icon. Just add a comment on the right column! Axpde (talk) 16:46, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Missing?[edit]

Berlin Suburban commuter train service[edit]

Hi Alison, I recoded the -Bahn logo and set up a set of new SBHF, SHST, TSBHF and TSHST icons (KSBHF and KSHST will follow soon), using the "original" green #006e34 (plus the light green version in #5abf89), you might wanne change your entry. Cheers Axpde (talk) 16:41, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Because of the way these tables 'pick up' codes rather than icons if an existing graphic is redesigned then it will still be in the table; it won't need re-adding. If they are entirely new codes, of course, it would. Looking at User:AlisonW/Rail grp14 currently it appears that the first two of those are reusing codes. the T and K codes have been added. --AlisonW (talk) 23:29, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Btw. when setting up the new of of icons I used "S+BHF" instead of "SBHF1" to point up the fact that this is a station for "normal" railway and suburban commuter train service. Same for "TS+BHF", and there is another icon I called "TxS+BHF" that has the light green for erstwhile/planned suburban service. The full set of KBFs will follow as soon as my time schedule allows it. Axpde (talk) 16:00, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Here's some I made earlier[edit]

Here's some icons I created earlier today for your consideration. Descriptions are as-seen(your left=left), NOT as traversed (your bottom=ahead, your right=left)...

I thought these water ones, particularly when on the edge of their cell, would be handy to show where railway lines run alongside rivers (etc) --Peeky44 (talk) 18:32, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've added the groups that are new. Basically, where icons are 'filling in' existing code structures (eg ÜST with an additional prefix) then the way the css is coded they are automatically added to the tables and don't need notification. It is only where there are completely new codes (the CAPITALS usually) or new postfixes that I need to hear of them. And thanks for the river work! --AlisonW (talk) 21:15, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Also, did you know that DAMM, DAMMq, CUT and CUTq (as seen at Wikipedia:Route diagram template/Catalog of pictograms/straight tracks) haven't made it on? Appreciate busyness may have made this a low priority. --Peeky44 (talk) 10:50, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
And a new category - the left version exists but not the right:
Having just made and uploaded them, I realised they could already be made using a disused junction and overlaying a right-hand "in use" line. Oh well. I guess these will be a low-priority include for you (on those grounds alone). --Peeky44 (talk) 19:55, 2 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Icon Naming Help[edit]

I made these two icons and I am not sure if I should have made the station blue or red or if it can be named under the current convention.

The situation is a new station being built. This logo is for the light rail system's page, to indicate it's low level station, which will be passed over by a high level station on the heavy line. So there are two stations here from two systems, but the point is to illustrate the system on the light rail line. I am going to make the page using the hub overlays also.

Naming is always taken from the vertical line (where it exists( and yes, colour of the station too, however in this case it is a disabled access so the station colour gets 'lost'. If in doubt it is always fine to use multiple icons or create it as overlays. --AlisonW (talk) 22:32, 5 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Its now called File:BSicon uTurmBHFAo.svg j.reed (talk) 23:49, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Naming ideas?[edit]

I just recently requested a new icon File:BSicon vDST-xDST.svg for half abandoned cargo terminal. It used to have cargo transfer between two lines in the past, but now only the left side has traffic w/ cargo operation, but the right side's been abandoned. I'm positive that's the icon I need, but is it correct to call this icon a vDST-xDST? How about when the icon needs to be mirrored sooner or later, is it then xDST-vDST? I just want you guys to depate on this, before I'm using the icon in n+1 places.

ps: Thanks for Wiebevl for fullfilling the request so fast!

Dual-line icons, as this is, seem to usually be named as hyphenated-separate lines, so vDST-xDST would be right (and yes, x-v for the reverse). --AlisonW (talk) 22:34, 5 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

New icon lining issues[edit]

I recently requested a new icon, which was made in a record time (thanks Wiebevl), but there are some lining issues. It's a File:BSicon evSTRvr.svg and if you use it on top of the File:BSicon vBHF-KBFa.svg, the lines on the left side does not match right. I asked the user who made the new file, but he said it has something to do with double standard icon widths or such. He also said he'll push with the issue, unsure in witch forum, but I thought a added thought by someone here could help him fix it...? See his Talk page for more. Thanks!
