Social and Political Impacts[edit]

Hey Alex. I think what I may have been thinking of when I put titled this section this way was things like how once the fishways were built damning the river for power was pretty well precluded... I remember an article talking about a couple reasons that this might be, and it would be interesting to write something about this I think (and so does Tina, based on her comments on my outline :)) --Eye101 (talk) 19:26, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Set up a sandbox please[edit]

Hi there, You need to set up your sandbox and then do the drafts of your section of the article in your sandbox rather than your talk page. If you don't know how to do this, let me know and I will help, but other people on your team have set one up correctly and can probably help. --Greentina (talk) 03:53, 16 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the kitten - and for the note about your sandbox! --Greentina (talk) 19:51, 21 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Section Suggestions[edit]

Good work Alex! :) Some suggestions:

First paragraph: The first quote is unnecessary I think (Wikipedia isn’t a fan of quotes) – I would paraphrase. I would remove the first time you say they publicized their issue, and just say that they wrote to the Department (the department is the important information, but nothing more is said about the publicising, except when you say later that they went to the press). “pointing out the injustice” isn’t very neutral I don’t think. It sounds like we are saying it was an injustice rather than the Aboriginals, which we’re not supposed to do. I would just say “pointing out/arguing that...”. I’m unsure about the second quote... When the deparment ‘stated that nothing more would be done...” who were they saying that to? Could be clearer. I would condense the last two sentences to: “The native fishers applied more pressure by leaking the story to the press, but this did not save the Nlaka'pamux people from a four-day-per-week fishing restriction, imposed by...”

Second paragraph: “confronted” is a bit of a strange word there – makes me think physical, in your face, etc. But I imagine it just means they contacted them, yeah? The long Evenden quote would be clearer (in simpler language) if you paraphrased I think. “continued to run downstream” – I would change “run” to ‘operate.’ Run downstream sounds like they are travelling downstream.

Third paragraph: I don’t think one puts endeavours in place. You endeavour to do something. “supported the action taken by the government to remove the physical obstructions...” maybe. What's a "pioneer canner"?

I’m also wondering if maybe some of the stuff other Alex is writing will be better in this section. Like the stuff that he’s hopefully found on any other long term policy that has come out of the slide. I guess we’ll see when he posts it.

I think maybe throughout the page we should be using the term Aboriginal or Indigenous instead of Native, but I’m not sure. I realize Evenden might use Indian, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the respectful term to use. Not sure how we can find out definitively. Something we'll all talk about in person tomorrow. --Eye101 (talk) 20:38, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

Thank you Stefan2 for letting me know. The picture is in the public domain at an archival library and was taken in approximately 1913. Not sure how to make sure it doesn't get deleted as i am kind of new to the wiki scene! Alexwarren89 (talk) 19:00, 1 April 2012 (UTC)Alexwarren89(talk)[reply]
