Help is available, if wanted[edit]

Mr. Dixon, a few months ago you asked me to go over one of your articles you were prepping for FA status. I haven't gotten any more requests from you, so I wondered if that's because my help wasn't as helpful as you'd hoped, or if you just haven't needed it. I'm asking because I'm homebound for at least the next two months due to a work injury, and my services are very available if wanted. Cheers. --Preston McConkie (talkcontribs) 20:26, 5 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Mr. D, I'm glad you have a couple of projects I can help with. Don't worry about checking to see if I've been editing lately, when asking for help. I'm sometimes not in the mood for editing just for the heck of it -- that is, unsolicited -- but I would always give a higher priority for working on your projects. If you want to contact me by email I can respond from wherever I am, and my address is prestonmcconkie@gmail.com. --Preston McConkie (talkcontribs) 20:14, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll be happy to run through the article next week. Send me another message when you're ready just so I don't forget. --Preston McConkie (talkcontribs) 19:03, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I reviewed James B. McCreary for GA and passed it. Congratulations! Regards, —Mattisse (Talk) 18:53, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Goebel article issues[edit]

"But the new county was not of the size required by the Kentucky Constitution ..." Too small or too large? --Preston McConkie (talkcontribs) 21:01, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • OK, just leave it the way it is, unless you want to do more research so you don't have to say "probably." --Preston McConkie (talkcontribs) 21:18, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You said four Democrats crossed party lines to vote for Goebel for senator. Did you mean Republicans? Otherwise it's wrong to say they crossed party lines. I already changed it to say "four of the dissenting Democrats relented and voted for Goebbel." Change it as appropriate if you meant to say Republicans. --Preston McConkie (talkcontribs) 21:26, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oops, craps. This is what comes of editing while taking morphine. Bradley won, not Goebel. --Preston McConkie (talkcontribs) 21:27, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • Speaking of morphine ... this article was about Beckham, not Goebel. Read carefully behind me, but I think most or all of my edits should stick. I'm finished with this one. Great piece. VERY clean copy. Wish more wrote like you do. --Preston McConkie (talkcontribs) 21:51, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much for the correction on Wikistyle regarding month abbreviations. I'm trained in AP, and I need to give the MOS another read so I don't mistake one for the other. I didn't think about the cites ending up in the middle of the sentence, so I'll look out for that from now on. And yes, I've got the time and need something to do, so I'll dive into the rest of the articles you've mentioned. It's a pleasure to edit behind you, you leave very few outright errors and your prose is very readable. --Preston McConkie (talkcontribs) 15:50, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

S.B. Buckner[edit]

"During the Mexican-American War, he served as the regimental quartermaster."

Which regiment?--Preston McConkie (talkcontribs) 22:37, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'd just like to let you know that I've completed the Esperanto translation of your excellent article about the Beauchamp-Sharp Tragedy. It was both a great read and a great text to work on. Let us continue to spread Kentuckian wisdom to the world ! ;=)

Best wishes, Thomas Guibal (talk) 20:36, 11 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Legal Cites[edit]

Cases are reported in a series of books, and a case cited in legal documents by the volume number in the series, and the page number withing that volume where the case report starts. Thus 1 J.J.Marsh. (Ky) 206 means volume one of the reports published by him, at page 206. Early reports used the name of rhe reporter; later they used an institutional name. Thus 1 Cranch 1 is the beginning of the first case reported by him of the United States Supreme Court. In later reprints and editions, it would probably be 1 US 1 where US is the standard abbreviation for the official volumes issued by the Court itself.--StanZegel (talk) 19:10, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, these are standard cites, which anyone familiar with legal research will instantly recognize. I don't know if wiki has a standard template for them. --StanZegel (talk) 01:58, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

For more on this, see [1], page 125 of which gives some Kentucky specifics. --StanZegel (talk) 02:25, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I started to add this on the coach cal talk page, but decided the talk page police might shoot. :)[edit]

Well, arguably, I started it with "But it started yacking at me about basketball...". But seriously (hah!), all in fun. All the best and Happy Editing.- sinneed (talk) 18:35, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I am reviewing William S. Taylor for GA. A very interesting article on a very interesting stituation. I have only on question, at Talk:William S. Taylor (Kentucky politician)/GA1. Regards, —Mattisse (Talk) 20:22, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Willson Portrait[edit]

I uploaded this for your article. Hope this works better for you than the other portrait. I was shooting for his color oil portrait but couldn't find an image of good enough quality. --Amadscientist (talk) 02:37, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The image is from the book "The World's Work VOLUME XVII, November 1908, to April 1909, A History of our Time" by Walter Hines Page and Author Wilson Page. Published by Doubleday, Page and Company, (1909). Direct link to image as seen from Googlebooks full view-[2]--Amadscientist (talk) 20:15, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I added the information to the desription so there would be no question. The Wikipedia upload did not give me a place to add the information with a public Domain upload.--Amadscientist (talk) 20:18, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sue Bennett College[edit]

Thanks for your recent edit on my recently-created Wikipedia page re SBC. I am not familiar with that institution's history, and I wrote the page based entirely on things I could find off the internet. I would appreciate your adding, correcting or amplifying any part of that page, based on your greater familiarity with the subject matter. Thank you in advance.Raymondwinn (talk) 18:17, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you have the time and interest, this article needs to be reworded. All the better to get something sensible in place promptly that covers the facts. [3] and [4]. Regards, FloNight♥♥♥ 13:16, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"The NCAA is currently investigating allegations that a player from the 2007-08 season committed “knowing fraudulence or misconduct in connection with his entrance examination" and had an unknown individual complete his SAT examination. These allegations could potentially result in ruling the player ineligible and forcing the University to forfeit all 38 wins and its NCAA Finals appearance.[18] The NCAA informed Calipari in a letter that he is not considered at risk in this investigation."
The above paragraph can be re-worded and that will mostly fix the problem, right? As for the wording about how this reflects on his career, in the lead or other sections, lets see what the media says. If it is widely reported with a particular emphasis then we will need to reflect that in the article. If not, then we should not come to conclusions about the significance of the forfeited games. FloNight♥♥♥ 13:54, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm reviewing Augustus E. Willson for GA (the review can be found here). I've reviewed all of the article, but only posted some of it because I'm quite tired at the moment. I have only a few easy-to-fix prose issues, the rest of which I'll post tomorrow. Cheers, and nice corresponding with you again. Mm40 (talk) 02:33, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've finished posting the review, which I've put on hold for seven days for you to address the issues. Mm40 (talk) 22:41, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Passed the article; congratulations, and I hope you consider reviewing someone else's GA nomination. Mm40 (talk) 14:36, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Test?[edit]

Re: [5]

I can't see why you would think it was a test, with over 17,000 edits I'm pretty well beyond the 'oooh can I do this?' testing stage.. unless you think I was testing your patience? :) But oh well, if you consider it an inappropriate link, so be it. But it wasn't a 'joke' or 'test' edit. I'm sure you can figure out why I considered "Knob Lick" to be related to "Big Bone Lick" though.. I thought that the majority of readers (including myself) who would actually look up that article is only doing so because of the humorous name involved, so why not, for the entertainment value of the encyclopedia, show them similar goofy names of places? (You're not from Big Bone, Kentucky I'm hoping...) :) -- œ 23:10, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thomas Z. Morrow[edit]

I saw your article in the DYK section and it was well research and written. The only suggestion for a change to the article is to substitute the Kentucky circuit courts article for the United States circuit court article as that Judge Morrow was a Kentucky state judge and not an United States circuit court judge which is federal.I notice that right away when I read the article. Federal judges are appointed for "good behavior" whereas in Kentucky they are elected. And Judge Murrow was elected to his position. I find the various state legislators to be more interesting then their Congress counterparts. Thank you-RFD (talk) 20:16, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for your comments-RFD (talk) 14:08, 10 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Steve Nunn has been in the news today...his former fiance was found murdered this morning in Lexington and there are reports that Nunn was found in Barren County with a gunshot wound but was later taken into custody. I have updated Nunn's BLP with refs and added a current tag because of the fluid situation. If you haven't already, add the article to your watchlist. Willking1979 (talk) 17:12, 11 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Could you take a look at the Kinman article again? You failed it for GA last year, and I thought I'd resubmit it to another reviewer if you feel that I've addressed almost all the issues you brought up. Thanks for any help. Smallbones (talk) 02:59, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Simon B. Buckner[edit]

Thanks for all your helpful suggestions regarding Simon B. Buckner. I think I have addressed them all now. If you have further suggestions, please leave them at the FAC page. If not, I hope you will consider adding your support for its promotion to FA. I notice it's near the bottom of the list of FA noms with 3 supports (counting the nominator) and no opposes. I'd really hate to have to restart this process for want of one "support". (At least four supports is still the rule, isn't it?) Acdixon (talk contribs count) 13:04, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Although I wish you good luck with your article, I generally do not participate directly in rating reviews. I occasionally contribute comments or suggestions, but never "vote" on other peoples' work. (I also never nominate articles for such reviews.) Furthermore, I have no expertise concerning the large part of the article on his postbellum activities, so have no overall opinions to offer. Hal Jespersen (talk) 15:45, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations on the promotion to FA. Well worthy. And thanks for helping me to locate the new bio! I would have bought it anyway (and I pledge to cover it quickly, and update the citations--keep your eyes peeled). Now I have something new to feature on the ACW portal! BusterD (talk) 20:43, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, ditto on the congrats. Very nice article, and good job putting up with the administrivia of the review. I did look into the other bio, and I'm not sure how scholarly it is. Buster will have to let us all know. Auntieruth55 (talk) 02:59, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Image restoration request[edit]

Hi Acdixon - just wanted to update you in regard to the image restoration request you made on my talk page at Commons. (File:Henry Cornelius Burnett - Brady-Handy.jpg). Unfortunately I've still not got around to it in the month or so since you made the request, but I just wanted to assure you I've not forgotten and do intend to start working on it in the near future. Your GA nomination of James D. Black[edit]

The article James D. Black you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:James D. Black/GA1 for eventual comments about the article. Well done! Richard75 (talk) 23:24, 25 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oops[edit]

Re: this - I'd somehow read those as single brackets, meaning a word was being implied, instead of as double brackets, meaning it was being linked. I'm dumb. I'll try to get to the rest of your points sometime this weekend. Steve Smith (talk) 16:05, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You forgot to add a license. No restrictions means public domain. Regards Hekerui (talk) 17:42, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

C'Ville[edit]

Thanks for the review..and very quick response! Don't suppose you could help with a revert to the last version showing the "Note" section?...I'm not sure how to do it properly and I don't want to futz the page.

I'm sure we could find something re: OR cruising to make it not OR, but it's not encyclopedic the way it is. Cruising and shopping at Wal Mart are the 2 main activities in C'ville - I suspect the drop in cruising is because the economy sucks and no one can afford the gas O_O VulpineLady (talk) 18:22, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

NowCommons: File:Greenville KY Courthouse.jpg[edit]

File:Greenville KY Courthouse.jpg is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:File:Greenville KY Courthouse.jpg. This is a repository of free media that can be used on all Wikimedia wikis. The image will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. Governors of Kentucky Signatures[edit]

I was wondering where you find these? I am currently looking to create a whole set of signatures for the Governors of Kentucky, and I'm find searching quite hard at times (in my current case, Gabriel Slaughter). Any help is appreciated. Connormah (talk) 00:10, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikicup[edit]

With your prolific contributions, I think you'd be a great contestant in the Wikipedia:WikiCup. You earn points for FAs, GA, DYKs, and so on. If you're interested, you can sign up at Wikipedia:WikiCup/2010 Signups. Reywas92Talk 21:18, 26 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

And this year Good and Featured topics are worth even more: 10 and 15 points per article. If you get it upgraded from GT to FT I think you'd only get the difference. Reywas92Talk 22:00, 30 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Edwin Morrow[edit]

Sorry not to get back for a second read-through in time...I am glad to see the article was promoted. Congrats! Christopher Parham (talk) 18:49, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Battle flags[edit]

I noticed you used the Confederate battle flag. Technically, you are supposed to use the actual flag of the country, not its battle flag. Ironically, I think the WikiCup would benefit if it allowed "flags of armies" of kings or sovereign rulers under battle, and their modern-day equivalent, the national battle flag. I don't favor making this change for the 2010 cup but would favor it in 2011. I would have one proviso: Any such flag must be notable and must have an article about it that is at least c-class or an equivalent-size-and-quality section of a larger article. If it doesn't, you have to write and get it up to c-class-quality before the cup starts or you will have to choose a different flag. Of course, the Confederate Battle Flag already meets these requirements, its section would meet at least c-class if in its own article. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 20:17, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The 2010 WikiCup begins tomorrow![edit]

Welcome to the biggest WikiCup Wikipedia has yet seen! Round one will take place over two months, and finish on February 26. There is only one pool, and the top 64 will progress. The competition will be tough, as more than half of the current competitors will not make it to round 2. Details about scoring have been finalized and are explained at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Please make sure you're familiar with the scoring rules, because any submissions made that violate these rules will be removed. Like always, the judges can be reached through the WikiCup talk pages, on their talk page, or over IRC with any issues concerning anything tied to the Cup. We will keep in contact with you via weekly newsletters; if you do not want to receive them, please remove yourself from the list here. Conversely, if a non-WikiCup participant wishes to receive the newsletters, they may add themselves to that list. Well, enough talk- get writing! Your submission's page is located here. Details on how to submit your content is located here, so be sure to check that out! Once content has been recognized, it can be added to your submissions page, from which our bot will update the main score table. Remember that only articles worked on and nominated during the competition are eligible for points. Have fun, and good luck!
