Cash Conversion Cycle[edit]

Hello,

I'm not really an expert on the Cash Conversion Cycle, but I'm just wondering whether the changes you made reflect differences between American versus South African English? Both changes seem a bit jarring to my ear. Andrew Gradman ^talk/_WP:Hornbook 14:18, 25 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there,

The changes I made are not related to language usage but to subject classification and financial statement nomenclature. In line with IAS 1 the term 'Balance Sheet' is no longer used, though it may sound better than the somewhat clumsy 'Statement of Financial Position'. Also, Financial Accounting is defined (according to the wiki definition) as "the field of accountancy concerned with the preparation of financial statements for decision makers". The Cash Conversion Cycle does not appear in any financial statement: rather, it is a management accounting tool. AccZA (talk) 16:03, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lowe-Porter[edit]

Thanks for removing that nonsensical praise of L.-P.! I must have overlooked that. In fact I've read Mann himself strongly disliked Lowe-Porter's translations (although his English was not the best, he could tell she was a bad fit for his writing style) so much that he tried to get a guy to do the translations. Unfortunately, the guy died (forgot his name) before he could do any work on the translations. And so the English-speaking world was stuck with L.-P.'s flowery and prudish translations for decades. She was probably an important reason why Mann never quite caught on in the US or UK in the same way e.g. Proust did. --Morn (talk) 16:05, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I read about the weakness of her translations in my research prior to reading Mann (before I read anything in translation I like to know which the best translations are). To my horror I discovered that my University and town libraries stocked multiple copies of L-P and only one other (new) translation of Dr Faustus. AccZA (talk) 18:09, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Last year I simply snuck a newer, better translation into a University library and put it on the shelf there, right next to L.-P.'s failed attempt. If I had the money I would do that too. Unfortunately I wouldn't be sure my contribution would be appreciated, though...in ZA being picky about German translations gets you a quizzical look at best. AccZA (talk) 19:21, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
