Thanks man. My only real concern with the island was that I'm going for a fishing trip in the region next summer and don't want to get lost by using some foolish outdated name. Then I got really excited about the island and have now read most substantive English sources about Bozcaada. I can't wait to eat the fish I caught that day drinking the red wine of Bozcaada and enjoying the sun. My only concern is always "What the evidence says..." and in cases where it is clear like this I find the points against very problematic. Occupation of Izmir by Greeks: Question to Abstract

Have you noticed that Greek atrocities and mal treatment of Turks in their occupation has disappeared from the lead but we (or I, maybe I am the only one -among Turkish editors- interested to show the real character of an occupier) cannot remove other details from the lead? Is this "occupation" about how good the occupier was? Why do the people of Izmir celebrate every year the end of that occupation? (The photo in the link is Izmir, 2012, civil society celebrating the end of that occupation, 90 years later, still with great joy and massive participation...) Maybe because Mr Stergiadis was such a good fellow that the Turks could not enjoy his democratic administration and they celebrate the return of autocratic Turkish administrators? Any idea why Bishop Chrysostomos was lynched? Why did not the Turks in Izmir-or other cities- do that to other bishops? (Remember the Pontus Rep article you edited. Some men of religion -like Makarios in Cyprus- have been something different from men of religion, something not very compatible with conveying a message of love from God, to all men and women.) You are right on the unbalanced aspects of the lead. I added that although Stergiadis tried to stop discrimination, his efforts were not always effective (adding a little balance based on content and sources). You are also right that the "Aftermath" of the Occupation is over-emphasized in the lead (99% of the content in the "Aftermath" section is mentioned in the lead, whereas for the "Response to the Landing" only about 10% of the info is in the lead). I'm thinking about how to fix that, but don't have a great solution yet. I can't (nor will) judge Chryostomos' fidelity to God or religious principles (or anyone else's), not something I'm able to do. Best. AbstractIllusions (talk) 14:35, 9 October 2012 (UTC)

Getting Africa Peer Review working

Note to: User:Cliftonian, User:Katangais, User:4shizzal, Hey all, here's the basic proposal: get Wikipedia:Africa-related regional notice board/Peer review page working. Point 1: All of you are doing some great stuff in Africa-related pages. But I choose all of you for A) quality of edits and B) involvement in multiple areas and thus can bring lots of varied issues to Africa pages. Point 2: Africa-related pages are being largely ignored unless there is self-pushing (nominations and shepherding a page through FA, DYK, etc.) Point 3: The Peer review page for Africa is not working. Never really worked, and dead since 2008. Point 4: Part of this as well as other issues, has resulted in .005 pages in the Africa project ever being assessed at all (GA, A, FL, or FA) (for comparison it is .018 for Southeast Asia). Point 5: As Cliftonian recently did, he took the Lisbon Appointment article to the great folks at Military History for review, which is a great practice, but it seems an Africa peer review page could serve everyone with a more focused peer review process. I think we all might have an interest in this (although I may be wrong, of course). Hence, the proposal that with a little help from you all, we might be able to get an Africa-related peer review page going. I know some of you are busy or doing other stuff, so this doesn't need to be a quick response. Just figured I'd start the conversation, and see if there is any shared interest.   • My Idea for how to accomplish this: 1. Archive Wikipedia:Africa-related regional notice board/Peer review discussions to start with a clean slate, 2. Each of us thinks about putting an article up for Peer review (could be you've worked on or another article) and the others review and edit for improved content. 3. Do a similar process a month later and encourage other editors to join in the efforts. Hopefully after that the process' utility would feed itself for a while. I've wiped the peer review pages for a new start (the ones that were there, ranging from 2007 to 2009, are now archived here). Question for administrator

I caused a problem last night with multiple open tabs, exhaustion, and trying to fix technical things (not my forte, obviously). I immediately logged off and stopped any editing until I got rested, but would like an admin to check out the damage done and fix if possible.

  • What I did: I moved Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Africa-related regional notice board accidentally. It shouldn't have been moved. The diff is here
  • I tried to undo five times and it didn't work, but User:Til_Eulenspiegel thankfully reversed it. See: here
  • Unfortunately, Til Eulenspiegel also thinks an admin may have to look at it now. See here

Thanks, I think that nonsense is going to end up being non-notable. I'm looking to see if it justifies an article or not. As for the Turkey trip, it is pretty much set at this itinerary: Istanbul, sailing to Gelibolu, hiking around Gallipoli for 3 days, Bozcaada, Asos, Foça, Izmir, Çeşme, Gundogan, hiking around Bodrum for 5 days, long sailing until Fethiye, then Kabak beach, long sailing until Antalya and then a long flight home. (Want to include Rhodes and Mytilene but the Greek government is saying we need to get permits in Athens to sail into the ports...but we'll see). Not much in the south and most of it in the sea, but at least a bit.
For Rhodes there are ferries and/or catamarans all the year; I can give you their website and even e-mail adress for reservation. I am not up to date but I think there are ferries to the other island only during summer. (Leave your yacht at a marina and share an experience with the ordinary people like this scribe... :-) See your mail for details. Enjoy life. All the best. --E4024 (talk) 11:56, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

A couple years ago I read some of the (nonsense?) about a root language uniting all the world's languages at some primordial level. That was really fun, but I largely ignored it. But now that I'm preparing my Turkish for the trip, finding out how many words overlap with Spanish and French is making me very happy. More nonsense

I was just watching some programme about the Maya calendar (vamos, one on 21.12.12, not a documentary :-) and I learn that "quin" is "day". In Basque language, "egun" is "day". In Turkish, "day" is "gün" (it also is one of the names of the "sun"). What is my conclusion? Nonsense... --E4024 (talk) 20:42, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

The Basques add the word (or maybe suffix, no idea) "on" to "egun" to say "good-day". In Turkish "on" is not used any more as it is, as a noun; but we have developed two verbs from it: (vi) Onmak (To get well, to get better) and (vt) Onarmak (To make something better, to repair it). And these Basques also use "Agur" to say good-bye; reminds me of our "Uğur" in Turkish, which means "good luck". We also use it to say good-bye: "Uğurlar olsun". I have, of course, no problem with any article I've edited being evaluated or edited and think the Good Article process would only help me be a better editor. My only hesitance at this point is that I'll be starting a limited-wikipedia period for the next two months (living out of a briefcase for a while). So I won't be able to participate actively. It is of course your prerogative and I have no fundamental objections; just letting you know that it may take weeks for me to respond to help out with any necessary changes or to even read any comments. Quick proposal

Hello,

Thank you for the copyedit. Makes me a lot more comfortable with the article now. In regards to the confiscation in Turkey section, I was pretty confident with that since I have copyedited and paraphrased a lot. How bout just doing something like this, we remove close paraphrase tag as of now. Then, you can copyedit whenever you want and at your own leisure. If you run into problems of close paraphrasing we can put the tag back and paraphrase accordingly.   • So yeah, the tag should probably remain on for one more round of changes. The Turkish section is ok--no serious problems (it seems) but some changes to make sure that this is not a derivative work. Remember--a key part of close paraphrasing is also not 'over quoting'. Short quotations can be used to highlight points but using multiple quotations from a source and just changing the filler around the quotes would also be close paraphrasing. I'm swamped right now--but we should be able to get the close paraphrasing tag removed by the weekend (hopefully). AbstractIllusions (talk) 15:58, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

I'm quite confident that there is still plagiarism/close paraphrasing in the article. You can certainly tackle the remaining sections (remember: please put extra focus on non-English sources) until I can sit down and show close paraphrased sections that I can't fix and fix close paraphrased sections that I can. I made the same decision a while back. It make me sad that that article will never be any good any long as it's held captive by that troll, but I've got enough sources of aggravation in real life.
