Mediation Wikipedia NLP Article Edit War[edit]

To Voice of all I am concerned about the current edit wars with the NLP article. This will no doubt reflect badly on Wikipedia considering many websites are scrapping off Wikipedia for articles. I have in the past tagged NPOV as I believed that the NPOV was disputed. I am not convinced that any form consensus has emerged at the moment. Recently someone has removed all NPOV tags. There is no point in contributing to the article because of the current edit conflict. I wonder whether you are still the mediator or you have appointed anyone to the position? If conventional mediation doesn't work, what about restoring NPOV tag and freezing the article for a few months. This will allow people to calm down and dissociate Wikipedia from the edit conflict. --Dejakitty 18:58, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've gotten flack for deleting biased and unsourced claims on the NLP article, with accusations of deleting "facts", even though those "facts" have no sources to verify them. I've been accused of being "lazy" because I haven't fixed someone elses NPOV violations and instead delete them. When I provide a dozen diffs that prove I have in fact tried to fix someone else's NPOV violations repeatedly only to be reverted immediately, I'm told people grow tired of reading citations, and then I get the added bonus of some original research that "the name in parens isn't the only name that supports that view". Well, interestingly enough, I have absolutely no way to verify that, now do I? I think you need to do some basic education to some of these editors who keep talking about "facts" to bring them up to speed on some of the basic wikipedia concepts of "verifiable sources" and basic NPOV policy, because they continue to ignore it. After that, explain to them what "original research" is and how a biased statement with no source is not a fact, but "original research" deserving to be deleted from an article. These folks have learned nothing, have conceded nothing, and rather than admit any violations of policy, turn around and accuse me of all manner of make believe policy violations. I don't "delete facts", I delete biased claims that have no sources. I have tried to fix NPOV problems only to be reverted. The request for arbitration has failed to catch their attention. Perhaps you can. As it is, I see no reason to unlock the page because the editors causing the trouble have not shown any change at all in their attitude towards teh topic. Admins can get confused to and I don't have a tab. I use the one true skin i.e clasic. The result is that due to where classic puts the interlang links I have to scan down quite a bit to see the on article link.Geni

Classic was the standard skin pre monobook. The result is that it doesn't cope too well with things that have arrived since mediawiki 1.3 such as catigories and large numbers of interlang links. Hello from MTGS[edit]

Hello VoA. Just thought I would say howdy as you asked me to. You can do the same on my talk page if you like, it is rather empty at the moment. :(

I've deleted this, as it's a fork. As it is, forks aren't allowed, for many reasons. One reason why we don't allow forks is that it does violate GFDL (you were the only contributor to the above page, even though hundreds upon hundreds have edited it). As it is, it's really tough to merge page histories coherently. One possible suggestion, if you're discussing a way to make it work, is to utilize the "Permanent link" function on the sidebar. I wouldn't suggest doing this now, but it might be a way to make this work. I'm about to note this on the administrator's noticeboard so that other admins can discuss this; I'll leave a link when I'm done posting it. Ral315 (talk) 01:10, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Done, see WP:AN/I#Supervised/George W. Bush. Ral315 (talk) 01:17, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth, I like the idea. But it would have to be done at software-level in order to work. For example, have it so admins can put a flag on highly vandalized articles, that puts a notice at the top of the screen, and links to a vetted, vandalism-free version. This way, the link would always be at the top of the screen. I don't know if others want to do it, but if you poke the devs repeatedly about it, they might implement it :) Ral315 (talk) 17:39, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protect[edit]

Here is what I put on Jimbo's page: "I really like the idea of multiple layers of protection. We could have:

Open(no protection)
  1. No Moves
  2. Logged in Only
  3. Logged in with edit count 25+
  4. Logged in with edit count 500+(pretty much like protection, but non-admins can edit)
  5. Protected

Numbers 2-4 are "semiprotection". This would VASTLY cut down on vandalism and would be no where NEAR as restrictive and anti-wiki as page protection. Can you get this implemented somehow? What developers could do this? Thank you."

I believe that 25 and 500 are good numbers for what they do. The 500 mark gets us past most maturity issues. If a person with 754 edit wars, we can block him. Sockpuppets are useless, as their edit count is too low. This is wonderful! I hope this gets through! This would greatly increase my confidence in Wiki.Voice of AllT|@|ESP 05:53, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, it's a great idea in practice. But what do we say to users with under 25 or 500 edits? Where do we direct them to? I don't think 25 is too bad, but I think instead of 500, it should be more like 200 or 100, as that shows a good deal of maturity. Can you think of an example where you would want each of these semis implimented? -Mysekurity 12:18, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with your number of 100 edits. We can propose that instead of 500 :). Pages of high viewers and fairly high vandal rates(such as senator and representaive articles can get semiprotect 0 when needed. Things like George Bush need at least 25 on. In a few cases, 100 would be used, if 25 fails. But, yes, generally only semiprotect and semiprotect 25 would be used. I already made the semprotect/semiprotect25/semiprotect100 tags.Voice of AllT|@|ESP 13:00, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I REALLY hope can get this through, I have been trying to push semi-protect for months now. I just want to see it implemented.Voice of AllT|@|ESP 13:19, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I'm in complete agrement over that. Do you think 25 is the most appropriate, or maybe 15/10? Also, I don't think the template should be shown at the top of the page in article reading mode, only in editing mode, eliminating any extra ugly template boxes. Only full protects would be shown, just as we do not show a box to say it has been protected against moves, it just doesn't allow regular users to move it. I am with you in wanting to get this acomplished as quickly as possible. Any thoughts? Additions to the old page? A new proposal page on WP/Meta? I await your thoughts (I see great potential here). -Mysekurity 00:35, 22 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Voice of All, I've put this template on TfD, for the reasons given there. I noticed you added it to Muhammad. I think this was mistaken given the thumping the previous attempts (different template to the same effect) on the GWB took. It's not personal, I just think that screaming "this article is rubbish" right at the top is a very bad way to start an article. -Splashtalk 02:47, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You'll note that user:Bend over, having gotten a new username (Red Rover, has gone and stuck that damnable list in at List of sexual slang (complete with a new talk page in which he, best I can tell, continues to call us both vandals). You closed the prior two AFDs in this... conflict... I believe. Is it too soon to stick the "List of sexual slang" on AfD again? "Sexual slang" looks like it's finally been secured, but the list's still around, and I believe it absolutely needs to be purged from Wikipedia, permanently. I've finally written it! Feel free to edit it all you please, write comments, and spread the word!

personal conduct complaint[edit]

I would like to make a conduct complaint against user Camridge. He is refusing to seek comment (RfC) or neutral third person. A recent comment in the edit text contains a personal attack against me, which (from memory) is considered more serious offense under wikipedia policy. I have been subject to similar attacks by a group of editors for the last few months who seem to be trying to take ownership of the article and talk page. I posted private messages to that user's talk page with a link to the offense and a request to stop, or resolve personal matters by email or private message. I feel that this group wants to "own" the article and talk page. Any request to stop (so far) have been dismissed or replied to with similar remarks, see the user talk page. I suspect that Camridge is one of the users named in arbitration who has adopted a new account name. --Comaze 00:31, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey VoA, can you please comment of HeadleyDown's recent edits. These edits removed entire sections that have been previously agreed upon. I'm probably too close to it so I'll delegate the comment to you. --Comaze 16:17, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey dude, Camridge is now at it again. I've gathered alot of evidence for a personal conduct compaint and will be presenting it to arbitration. I think these guys are getting pretty stressed out. Can you come in and see if you can settle them down again. Can you protect the page for a few days as a cool off period? --Comaze 09:32, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

White panthers[edit]

I could not help but read your user page. I looked up White Panthers and saw that they advocated "sex in the streets". Was that just vandalism? Is that true? And you agree?

As an entirely unrelated question, are you are dude or woman?(just kidding)Voice of AllT|@|ESP 06:10, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Har har. No, I'm definitely a dude, and I don't really agree with the whole "sex in the streets" bit (and yes, it's verified, I checked the link), but I do agree that white people have been notoriously bad throughout the ages. Many of my black friends laugh when I say "I hate white people," but there is a shade of truth to that, in that I am truly ashamed of what my "race" has done to other cultures and civilizations, as I would be if I were another culture that had completely decimated its equal. I had always believed I might join the Black Panthers, but, not being black, I was afraid I might not be accepted. I do honestly believe in equality, and, failing that, black supremacy. If Jesus was black, why are blacks so degraded? -Mysekurity(have you seen this?) 06:17, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

"Hey Jesus wasn't black....just somewhat dark, Midle-eastern :-)."

Well.... Sure, he wasn't exactly black, but he was in no way white. The man was assuredly Middle-Eastern, and its funny, because I was just discussing this with someone today.... Hmm, great story, I know, but really... what's the deal with all this hatred? -Mysekurity(have you seen this?) 06:48, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, we had a similar campaign at my school...it was like "80% of the school is non-white," (or maybe more, I don't remember), "yet only 5% are in AP classes" and such, and it was nice to see the outpouring of support and ideas. Living in Cambridge has taught me a lot of things about diversity and getting along. I've tried to talk with him on the talk page, but I've gotten nowhere, and I just don't have the drive right now to start a fight over Wikipedia currently, so I've stopped contributing on that page, just watching it. Thanks for your closing of Planes of Existence (talker)[edit]

This was a bad faith nomination because of disagreement about the listing of controversies relating to Virus who runs Crystal Palace (chat site). The disagreements were not with regards to whether there were controversies, as there was agreement that they happened, and indeed proof that they happened. The disagreements was because Virus didn't want anyone to know about them. Thus Virus had ordered for people that used his site to change the 2 articles from neutral point of view articles to biased articles, and this included nominating Planes of Existence for deletion, so as to "prove" that their talker was better. Whilst there were several editors, none of them had used Wikipedia outside of this issue, only 1 of them has used it outside of the AFD (and he has contributed to talker, so good for him, I hope he has made it good), and hence effectively they are "meat puppets". The result should have been a speedy keep, with the "meat puppets" basically counting as one vote, that for the nominator. It is a similar deal for Crystal Palace (chat site) and I urge you to consider all "meat puppets" as having 1 vote combined, since they are all acting as one person.

However, prior to the bad faith nomination, there were discussions about merging them all to talker, something which has eventually been done. Whilst there is dispute about notability, there are only 3 talkers that have received regular press coverage, those being Surfers, Resort and Foothills. To include any others as separate articles raises dispute, since, as we have demonstrated with the CP vandals, it would be simple for a talker owner to just order his troops to abuse Wikipedia to push through the view that their talker is good. So we made an agreement to merge them.

The issue now is whether Crystal Palace (chat site) deserves to merge. Other than popularity and controversy, it has no claims to notoriety. It is the most controversial talker in the history of talkers, but the talker owner has gone to lengths to vandalise pages to pretend that the controversies don't exist, and doesn't want the talker listed when talking about the talker. Hence, if we disregard the controversies, its only claim to fame is popularity. It has had a peak of 50 users on at a time, with 2,000 active accounts, falling woefully short of the target of 5,000 that is accepted for web forums and hence applies. Planes of Existence, in comparison, had over 25,000 active users at its peak. And indeed the top talkers had many more than that. But, they state that right now they are up there with the top talkers. At a time when nobody users talkers, they are up towards the top, having been basically the only talker that actually benefitted from the huge controversies, basically because a small segment of the community believes that "poor old" Virus was somehow victimised.

I got sick of quite frankly. I contributed over 700 edits to the articles, and I have basically made it as good as it is ever going to get. If they are going to run around and push POV, then fine, but this is not why I came here. I didn't come here to have edit wars and to be subjected to constant personal attacks and threats and abuse. So I hope that they can contribute towards a worthwhile article.

And yes, I think that talker looks good, at least as at my last edit of it. I hope that it will eventually look great.

The thing is this: if Crystal Palace (chat site) is deleted, as looks likely (unless we include meat puppets), then does that mean that it has to be included in talker? There has already been agreement that we are not going to have separate articles. If it is included in talker, then we can add 100 other talkers to the list, and then it gets ridiculously large - hence my criticism. It can only be included in talker if we agree to admit that they are responsible for the largest and most controversies. If we pretend that they don't exist, then it has no right to exist. That is the bone of contention. I am happy to say that there is dispute about what really happened. But we have to accept that it made an enormous impact. Sexual Slang protection[edit]

Looking at the RfC regarding Slim Virgin, and my own comment to it, I've got to ask you: was it you who protected sexual slang and the associated pages, and if so, are you certain it wouldn't have been better to let someone else do the page protections given that you have been so heavily involved in a non-admin capacity? The template's ugly, and I (and several other non-admins) would love to be able to try and improve it... but we can't. Why can't this page be semi-protected? Re: Name change[edit]

Hi Voice!

Sorry that I didn't get back to you; I've bene busy (hah) recovering from having my wisdom teeth pulled. Go to Wikipedia:Changing_username and request a change. Linuxbeak (drop me a line) 18:11, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

WHAT!?!? No more MTG? For shame! I am considering a similar move, but I'm not sure what to. Good luck with yours, Mysekurity(have you seen this?) 18:44, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I see you have truncated the (MTG) afterall, but not from your sig, tsk tsk. I was/am considering a move to User:My or User:MY (both of which I registered, which I guess makes it an invalid move, stupid me for not RFTA'ing). If you can think of another name, I'm all for it. I was thinking perhaps a name I use in raps, or possibly something else? I honestly don't know... I was thinking of a few, but I really don't have any idea. If you have any suggestions, please drop me a line (here or on AIM/e-mail. Thanks, Mysekurity(have you seen this?) 05:46, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. I'll add the talk page link to my sig one of these times, but in the interest of keeping my sig (relatively) short, I got rid of it for a time.
P.P.S. My userpage is ugly and never updated. If you could give me some ideas or thoughts about a redesign, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thank you![edit]

Tasty Tunnock's tea cakes (a delicacy in the British northeast, I'm told) to say thank you very much for standing in the Esperanza elections, being a great candidate and helping to make Wikipedia better for everyone just by existing! ➨ REDVERS

Esperanza elections[edit]

Thank you! :)

Thanks for voting for me in the Esperanza elections. I've been appointed to the Advisory Committee, thanks to your show of confidence in me. I'll do my best to make you proud, but please feel free to ask me for help at any time or to give me tips as to what you would like to do. Thanks for being an active member of Esperanza! I'll see you around. Titoxd(?!? - help us) 00:49, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

Thanks for the tulip. To be honest, I can't remember what specifically raised my stress level - I think it was a combination of Benapgar calling me a "shit" and a liar, and a few RFCs and RFArs, people leaving (Essjay, etc.), a good friend dying in a car accident (non-Wiki stuff can affect your mood here as much as wiki stuff), the everpresent trolls... I should lower it - my Christmas break helped lower my stress, as did wishing people Merry Christmas (I apologise for not adding you to the list - I'd like to think I would have gotten to wishing you a Merry Christmas had I not been on my way out the door when I did that; so Happy New Year).
