UChicago Vandalism

Sleeping Dogz

Sorry, I'm not quite sure what the best action is here. I don't think I would block someone for removing unreferenced tags unless it was a 3 revert rule violation and I don't like the idea of making idle threats. Just a small thing

I noticed you have been patrolling the recent changes, and I'd just like to remind you that when warning those who might be vandalizing, removing text, etc, it is advisable to substitute the templates. Cynrin, I have seen you around during my RC patrolling... and I have a few things to say. 1. You are doing an excellent job! 2. Go apply for VandalProof! again. I am not a VPadmin at all but a quick look at your contribs and count makes me think you'll be approved this time (if you still want to use it) 3. Oh yeah, and finally, this:

You're welcome - you do a great job, and I think it would be easier for you with one of the many rollback tools (it is a bit easier for me now, at least). Here is a list of counter-vandalism tools [2]. VandalProof is great and pretty much a perfect tool for RC patrol and reverts/warnings because that is exactly what it was designed to do. The current version 1.31 is good but has some issues with errors that cause it to crash at times. However, my favourite wikitool of all time is Lupin's popups tool. It has a lot of features not the least of which is a revert option. Popups works as an addition to your monobook.js page while VP is a stand alone exe that you download and run alongside your browser. VandalProof looks complicated when you start it up and see it for the first time, however, you can take as long as you want to click on stuff and see how it works (just don't click the Rollback buttons until you are sure!!). There is a manual online for VandalProof and, of course, lots of friendly people who use it who are happy to help you. Katalaveno^T_C 21:14, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

So, as an editor, I can warn a vandal, but what I not clear on is who can actually place a block or more precisely, who to reach out to when vandalism is in process or it is a repeat offender. Having tripped on it almost every time I am on-line, I usually look to see who the last person was that placed a block on the repeat offender. I found one vandal who has been blocked for better part of a year and then was left alone and the vandalism was escalating unchecked for 2 months even though it was reverted continually. I surmise that Wiki-land is so big that the vandals are like viruses on the loose; some get discovered and yet others flourish. Vexing problem to say the least. HJ 01:29, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, while I have spent a lot of time revising and editing or otherwise contributing. Now that I have 300+ articles on my watch list, I seem to spend more time undoing vandalism and posting warnings. I moderate several forums and am used to daily housekeeping (mostly to do with spammers). This vandalism of a fine aqnd unique collaborative repository of info is marred but the crude language that most pranksters seem to delight in placing in the midest of an article.
