Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended for publicity and/or promotional purposes. If you intend to edit constructively in other topic areas, you may be granted the right to continue under a change of username. Please read the following carefully.
Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, website or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but such groups are generally discouraged from using Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not, although if you can demonstrate a pattern of future editing in strict accordance with our neutral point of view policy, you may be granted this right. See Wikipedia's FAQ for Organizations for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, organization, or clients. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit Wikipedia again.

What can I do now?

If you have no interest in writing about some other topic than your organization, group, company, or product, you may consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

If you do intend to make useful contributions here about some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} on your user talk page.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
    • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
    • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.

Request reason:

I now understand why the user Southwest Monarch Study has been blocked. It is clear that the username violates the rules for user names and it is clear that I did not understand the policy. For that I apologize as a new user. I also understand how the post could have been seen as promotion or spamming. There was never any intent to promote the Southwest Monarch Study or to spam. I was unaware of Wikipedia’s guidelines and should have learned more first. How did the mistake happen? The Southwest Monarch Study tags monarch butterflies and gathers information about where the monarchs are later seen. We published some of the data on our web page, southwestmonarchs.org. Someone copied our data, added a copyright notice and began circulating their publication as if it was their own work. We didn't want to lose the right to use our own data. We informed the infringers that the data was used without permission, and that they were therefore prohibited from using it. The infringers told us they had stopped using the data even before receiving our notification, but many of our colleagues in the monarch butterfly community told us the infringers had contacted them with the intent of distributing our data as their own. A few days ago, a link appeared on the Wikipedia Monarch_Butterfly page as a map citation. This was just an attempt to publish a graphical re-representation of our data. I replaced the citation with a reference to our website. There was never any thought or intent of promoting Southwest Monarch Study. I merely wanted to give a proper citation. A better citation would have been Monarch Watch's migration map. http://monarchwatch.org/blog/2010/05/two-way-monarch-migration-map/ I would like to continue to edit Wikipedia. For example, at the beginning of the Monarch_butterfly page, the eastern and western populations are mentioned. I would like to add a study published in peer-reviewed journal that found no significant genetic differences between the populations. I am also aware, from a Xerces publication, of more milkweeds that monarchs use as host plants in the West.i I apologize for my error. I never have and never will use Wikipedia to promote the Southwest Monarch Study. What appeared to be promotion was my mistake, and I accept full responsibility for it. I was only trying to protect our data. If a similar situation should ever arise, I will handle it in a way to prevent even the appearance of impropriety. To prevent another mistake, I will start any future edits to any page with a discussion on the talk page.

Accept reason:

Allowing username change to requested username. Please put this request in at Wikipedia:Changing username as soon as possible to avoid re-blocking. Yunshui  20:41, 20 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Yunshui, for recommending that I be unblocked. Thank you, OrangeMike, for recommending that Yunshui unblock my account and change the username. There seems to be some confusion if user:Southwest Monarch Study and user:mdann52 are the same. They are not. The block was only for the invalid username and the appearance of self promotion. I grateful that concerns have been resolved in this matter. I am happy to discuss other issues as needed after I am unblocked. Southwest Monarch Study (talk) 14:56, 20 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Violation of Copyright[edit]

On the edit history of the article Monarch butterfly the following edit was posted: 07:49, July 15, 2014‎ Mdann52 (talk | contribs)‎ m . . (68,291 bytes) (-635)‎ . . (→‎top: rv link to copyvio material (Ticket:2014071510000218))

I would like to maintain that no copyright infringement was done. I referenced a url to a website, a normal and typical practice. No copyrighted material (the raw data itself) was/is used in this section of the article. No word-for-word text was copied from the reference and then pasted to the article.

There seems to be some confusion of what constitues a copyright violation. I can only say that this/these users are well-intentioned and are responding in good faith, wishing to enhance and improve the article. I have been privately contacted by a representive of Southwest Monarch Study via email. I would rather resolve this issue with the assistance other editors who have the expertise of determining copyright violations here on wikipedia rather than thru private corespondance.

Response[edit]

User:Southwest Monarch Study is not User:Mdann52. Because of my newness,I reported that the data was used without our permission via an email to info-en@wikimedia.org. I received a response on July 15 with Ticket#2014071510000218 that the post was removed.

From my understanding, the block is due to using the name Southwest Monarch Study and the perception of self-promotion. Southwest Monarch Study (talk) 06:05, 20 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
