You created the Kelbrook railway station article recently but did not add any references. I've looked for information about this and other stations on the line, and the book I added as a reference for the Earby railway station article lists the stations on the line but does not include Kelbrook as one of them, and I have looked at maps - npemap.org.uk and old-maps.co.uk - but could not find a station near Kelbrook. I have been unable to find anything to confirm of the existence of the station so do you have any ideas of where references could be found? --Snigbrook(talk) 23:02, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

A1personage, I note you have not answered the above question, despite having made other edits to this page at a later date, so you must have read it. It can't be difficult, you must know the answer. I came across the image that you have uploaded. Unfortunately, it didn't have any information on the license, so was going to be deleted. However, I have now fixed the image. Thank you for uploading images/media to Wikipedia! There is, however, another Wikimedia Foundation project called Wikimedia Commons, a central media repository for all free media. In the future, please consider creating an account and uploading your media there instead. That way, all of the other language Wikipedias can use them too, as well as our many sister projects. This will also allow our visitors to search for, view and use our media in one central location. If you wish to move previous uploads to Commons, see Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons (you may view images you have previously uploaded by going to your user contributions on the left and choosing the 'image' namespace from the drop down box). When an article is in a subcategory, e.g. Category:Buildings and structures in Preston, there's no need for it also to be in the parent category (e.g. in this case Category:Preston) unless there are special reasons for breaking this principle. Otherwise the parent categories just get clogged up with too many entries and there wouldn't be much point in having subcategories. (This refers to your recent edit to Preston bus station.)
I would also echo Adambro's point that it is important to provide an edit summary for every edit you make, as it helps other editors understand what you did and why you did it.
Finally it's important to provide references for material you add, especially when there might be doubt over its accuracy.

Copyright problems with Image:Modern railways.JPG[edit]
An image that you uploaded, Image:Modern railways.JPG, has been listed at Wikipedia:Copyright problems because it is a suspected copyright violation. Please look there if you know that the image is legally usable on Wikipedia (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), and then provide the necessary information there and on its page, if you are interested in it not being deleted. It is a photograph, not a scan, but I agree, I think it is still copyrighted. It does appear to be valid non-free content, so I have added a rationale for it. The tags for non-free content are at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Non-free. Regarding the image, Image:Preston park and ride.jpg, its licence appears to be non-commercial and I don't think it meets the non-free criteria as a free equivalent could be created. --Snigbrook(talk) 14:39, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Fleet Line.jpg)[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Fleet Line.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. Lealholm was not promoted to GA status on June 30th
WP:YORKS is a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 3509 last month to 3635 on June 29th). WP:GM has the lead in FAs. WP:YORKS is lacking in the area of GAs and falls well behind WP:LONDON. This topic was at the front of the new aims discussion and is an important issue for WP:YORKS.

The football and rugby editors have to be congratulated for keeping abreast of most, if not all, of the top clubs. Also for getting Scarborough F.C. seasons to FL status during the month.
There have been even more WikiProkject Yorkshire editors on vandal patrol on watchlist. Thanks it's really good to know that you have others in support.
A big "thank you" to all the editors who help make this WikiProject what it is; no edit goes unnoticed. If you patrol the recent changes regularly you "get to know" the editors and their specialities quite well.
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.
Informal article viewing and editing statistics for 5 of our priority articles
Rated a B class article. Viewed 40,122 times in May, 2008. Only went below 1,000 viewings on one day, 10th, and achieved 1,600 on the 6th and the 20th. Overall total number of edits 1,818 with 46 in May, 2008.
Rated a B class article. Viewed 38,018 times in May, 2008. On 12 days there were over 1,000 viewings with a sudden peak of 4,200 on the 24th. Overall number of edits 2,269 with 88 in May, 2008.
Rated a B class article. The highest number of monthly viewings for our priority articles at 50,846 for the month of May, 2008. There were consistently over 1,000 daily viewings with a high of 2,000 on the 25th. Overall total number of edits 3,152 with 86 in May, 2008.
Rated an FA class article.Viewed 37,740 times in May, 2008 with usually over 1,000 daily viewings. There were 6 days when over 1,400 viewings were made then a low of 900 on the 10th. Overall total number of edits 2,550 with 44 in May, 2008.
Rated a GA class article and actively being worked on for FAC. Viewed 42,902 times in May, 2008. Consistently over 1,000 daily viewings with 2,000 viewings on the 12th. Overall total number of edits 2,434 with 241 in May, 2008.
Monitor Use the watchlist to keep an eye on changes to the project's articles so that vandalism can be removed as quickly as possible.
Images! There is a shortage of good images in Yorkshire related articles, particularly on pages about smaller settlements. A good place to start would be the requested photographs category but please remember that there are many articles not within this category that have the same need. A good old holiday picture of The Spa, Bridlington would be a useful addition to the article.
Assessment "Assess and review Assessment of Yorkshire related articles has been brought up to date recently, but needs constant maintenance.
Last but not Least... Please remember that the list of stubs needing expansion is in permanent need of attention. Please take a look and see what you can do. One small edit each session would make a big difference.

Hi. A few of your recent edits have come up on my watchlist, and I thought I should give you some friendly advice. The most important thing to remember is the Wikipedia is not a news site, and is especially not a rail enthusiasts' new site. For instance, this incident is hardly earth-shattering and will likely be forgotten very quickly, so it doesn't merit a whole section of the Arriva Trains Wales article devoted to it. It definitely didn't merit inclusion on the July 19 article--which is why it was swiftly reverted. Also, just because you read something in Today's Railways, doesn't mean it's notable enough for inclusion in an encyclopaedia--the emphemeral bits of "fleet news" such as this are really not suitable.

First, you should read the notability criteria--these are general guidelines for what is, and isn't, suitable for including in Wikipedia. Have a read of What Wikipedia is not (particularly this bit) as well. As for railway articles in particular, for example, that London Midland have a fleet of Class 158s is notable, that a particular example was sent to a particular works on a particular date for a repaint isn't. As for notability of incidents, if it has had (or is likely to have) long-term repercussions, then it should be included; something that happens fairly often (train colliding with vehicle on level crossing at relatively low speed, not derailing, and with very few injuries) isn't. What incident in February are you referring to?

It's been three months since the last newsletter, but there's been a lot going on...
Promoted articles:
Greater Manchester is one of our project's top priority articles, the Greater Manchester article comprehensively covers everything to do with the county, from culture and history, to transport and demography.
Manchester United F.C. records and statistics is about the records of one of Greater Manchester's best know clubs, which feats like "the club currently holds the record for the most FA Cup triumphs with 11".
City of Salford is about the local government area and Greater Manchester's second city. Getting Salford to GA is one our the aim's of our project, so hopefully this may help.
Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal is about the history and modern restoration of the disused canal running through the county. (It's now at FAC, so please improve the article if you can!)
Manchester Mummy is about Hannah Beswick, whose macabre fear of being buried alive lead to her demanding that her body was kept above ground and checked periodically for signs of life.
Milnrow is a small town in Rochdale with a long history. The wool trade was important to the town and was the basis of much of its industry. (It's also the first GA for Rochdale!)
Ordsall Hall is an important Tudor hall in Salford with a reputation for being haunted!
Bert Trautmann is the German goalkeeper who broke his neck playing for Manchester City... and carried on playing!
The Peterloo Massacre appeared on the front page on 16 August! Well done to everyone who contributed to the article about a key moment of Greater Manchester's history and managed to get it showcased.
A new portal has been set up! The Greater Manchester portal showcases some of the best articles to do with the county. Thanks to Polishname for single-handedly getting it up and running.
There is a proposal to move members who haven't edited for a while to an inactive members list, so if you've not been edited recently but still want to be a member let us know!
WikiProject Greater Manchester is still the leading local British WikiProject! As far as featured content goes, we have a lead of 5 on Yorkshire and 11 on London! WP:GM now is the leading project in terms of GAs too with 5 more than London and 7 more than Yorkshire! If you see an article that you think deserves to be a GA, don't hesitate to nominate it at WP:GAC!
WT:GM: The project's talk page is a forum for discussion and to keep up to date with the latest project developments and initiatives put it on your watchlist! Recently there have been discussions on articles to be deleted, the congestion charge, how to get members involved and working together, and plenty of other stuff.
Although the project has had a lot of GAs and FAs recently, most of the articles covered by our short term aims haven't experienced much activity recently. Baby has undergone some change, but has a long way to go, and List of railway stations in Greater Manchester is very close to FL quality. If you think you can help improve an article, be bold and get editing! Articles such as List of railway stations in Greater Manchester already appear very close to FL status and may just require an editor to guide them through the FLC process.
Although these are the project's explicit short term aims, we endeavour to "improving all Wikipedia articles that are concerned with Greater Manchester", so every edit is valuable.

WP:YORKS is a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 4005 last month to 4085 on September 27th). WP:GM has the lead in FAs at 28 out of a total number of 1678 articles. In the area of GAs, at 21, WP:YORKS also falls behind WP:GM with 28.
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.
To bring all other top priority articles (currently 15 with 2 at FA) to at least Good article status
To set up a weekly or monthly selected article improvement drive
To produce a regular news letter for circulation to members
Wikipedia DVD version 0.7
Wikipedia DVD Version 0.7 aims to be a collection of around 30,000 articles taken from the English version of Wikipedia.
The process of producing the list of articles for the DVD is currently under way and 43 of the project's articles are being
considered for inclusion. The list of selected Yorkshire articles can be seen here.
The selection has been done using a scoring system depending on the project's assessment, the number of incoming links to the article, the number of interwiki
links the article has and the number of times the article has been viewed.
The process of selecting clean versions for each of the selected articles is also being undertaken so that vandalised versions are not put on the DVD.
Some of the articles also have clean-up tags attached to them which need to be dealt with before a version can be used on the DVD. It would be good if members
could address any tags in the selected articles and fix the problem identified. Those articles that are tagged by multiple projects should get a visit by each of the projects involved
so the articles will probably get a lot of activity in the next few days.
The cut-off date for this work is October 20th, but changes to articles following version selection may not be incorporated as there may not be time to reassess them.

The project is now subscribed to a clean-up listing which lists articles tagged with various clean-up tags that need attention. The listing is refreshed by a bot on a regular basis.
Monitor Use the watchlist to keep an eye on changes to the project's articles so that vandalism and spamming can be removed as quickly as possible.
Infoboxes Many of our articles would benefit from the addition of an appropriate infobox.
The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.
References Please remember that the list of stubs needing expansion is always in need of attention. Please take a look and see if you can help. One small edit, such as adding a reference section and reference, to an article each session would make a big difference.
Moves Please be careful when performing articles moves and ensure that you also move all the talk sub-pages and update any image fair use rational. Otherwise the archives, to-do lists, assessment comments and GA reviews get lost and the image may be deleted as it has an incorrect FUR.

Usually this is where this month's promoted articles are listed, however there is something more important this month. In September, the project was notified which of its articles were selected for a DVD version of wikipedia. The 49 are listed here, although the quality ratings are a bit out of date. Twenty-two of the articles were GA-class or higher, and only five were below B-class. These are articles that have been selected by wikipedia, not simply as the best but the most important, so they require our attention, most importantly those that fall below GA standards. We still have until the 20th October to make changes to the articles, so please if you think you can improve any of them in any way please do so!
In other news, it's been a busy month with plenty going on...
Promoted articles:
The Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal is a disused canal undergoing restoration. The canal, which travels between Bolton and Manchester with a branch heading north east to Bury, was abandoned in 1961.
Having previously been described as "bare, wet, and almost worthless", Ashton-under-Lyne rose to prominence in the Industrial Revolution as one of the most famous mill towns in the north west.
Henry Taylor is Oldham's forgotten Olympic hero. He won 3 swimming golds at the 1908 Olympics, a record for most golds in a single games by a Briton until Chris Hoy equalled it this year.
WikiProject Greater Manchester is still the leading local British WikiProject! As far as featured content goes, we have a lead of 8 on Yorkshire and 15 on London! WP:GM now is the leading project in terms of GAs too with 5 more than London and 7 more than Yorkshire! If you see an article that you think deserves to be a GA, don't hesitate to nominate it at WP:GAC!
WT:GM: The project's talk page is a forum for discussion and to keep up to date with the latest project developments and initiatives put it on your watchlist! Recently there have been discussions on articles to be deleted, the congestion charge, how to get members involved and working together, and plenty of other stuff.
There wasn't space in the last newsletter, but as of 24 July 2008 the project has a list of articles that have tags on them. As of 14 July 2008, 351 (21.8%) of our articles need a clean-up, although this should have gone down as some have already received attention (the bot does not seem to update the listing often).
In other news, the Merseyside Wikiproject has been set up. If you have an interest in the area or want to help out in any way, head over to the project page and pitch in.
In the past month we've achieved two of our short-term aims! The List of railway stations in Greater Manchester was expertly guided through the featured list process with hardly a problem, and now that Tameside is a GA a third of the county's boroughs are GA status or better. There's still plenty to do, some our our top-priority articles need referencing or tidying up, so don't hesitate to dive in! If you think you can help improve an article, be bold and get editing! And please keep an eye on the 49 articles selected for the wikipedia DVD.
Although these are the project's explicit short term aims, we endeavour to "improving all Wikipedia articles that are concerned with Greater Manchester", so every edit is valuable.

No new members joined the project in September and there are 49 active members of WikiProject Greater Manchester. A new list of inactive members has been started. Anyone who hasn't made an edit to wikipedia since 1 March 2008 automatically goes onto the list.

Reminders...
Images! There are some good images around, but more are still needed if we're going to get a "lead/static image in every infobox of every town in the county"! The requested photographs category lists some of the articles needing images.
Assessment As of 4th October, we have had 100% of our articles assessed for quality! Even so, 151 of our 1684 articles remain unassessed for importance. Please take a look and see what you can do.
You class 442 diagram in Gatwick Express livery is not particularly accurate and as the trains are still being refurbished, I think that it is inappropriate to put such a picture up.
“A close-up of the intermediate carrages” - not a good close up and does not show any detail clearly.
You may also want to use a spell check before posting other information.
“Two class 442s coupled together to form a 10 car unnit, not a un-common sight on services to Weymouth” - we already have clearer pictures, without shadows on the page in the same livery, so why would we want another one. Also, not an un-common sight! The trains haven’t been down there for at least 15 months! The same applies for the next 2 pictures with already having better, similar view pictures.
Wikipedia is not a picture gallery or a rail forum, which is where this sort of material belongs.
On the 442 page, you said "but heavy work is required as most of the off lease units haven't got standard parts. 442409 is a doubt being at Ashford Chart Leacon and having a lot of parts taken out of it and being used as a donar for spares". 442409 and 442416 are the only units not to have standard parts and therefore not the majority. 442409 is eventually going to be brought back into service and this comes from a source of high level management. Also, the picture change would be nice if it would display. For some reason, and as far as I can see the coding is correct, the picture just does not display on the main page, even though it does show after clicking on it for an enlarged version. Therefore it was reverted back to the previous picture.

As mentioned in the October newsletter, Wikipedia DVD Version 0.7, which aims to be a collection of around 30,000 articles taken from the English version of Wikipedia needed work to prepare 43 of the project's articles for the DVD.
The process of producing the list of articles for the DVD is now completed and thanks are due to the many members who made a contribution to the effort. The list of selected Yorkshire articles can be seen here.

Only two of our top priority articles were not selected, Ripon and Wakefield, the others were cleaned up, improved, expanded and copyedited as far as time allowed.

The football and rugby editors have continued keeping abreast of most, if not all, of the top clubs.

Missing co-ordinates
A recent entry on the project talk page Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Yorkshire#Missing coordinates alerted us to the fact that many of our articles do not display any geographical co-ordinates. Many also do not have infoboxes. As locational infoboxes usually have a field for co-ordinates, it was suggested that members might be able to kill two birds with one stone by adding an appropriate infobox at the same time as co-ordinates.
The infobox page usually includes detailed instructions for its use and many of the fields are not mandatory so are not displayed until information is entered.
The geographical co-ordinates for a location can be found on Google Earth.
Open Google Earth and enter the name of the location in the search box. (Quite often the article name can be copied and pasted directly into the search box but sometimes it is useful to add ,UK to the address.)
A results list is displayed beneath the search box.
Click on the right one.
Zoom in to check that the correct feature is being displayed on the image. (Sometimes the supposed feature is not at the centre of the page.)
Place the pointer over the location on the screen image and read the geographical co-ordinates from the panel at the bottom of the screen.
Make a note of the co-ordinates.
Open the tab of the article you are editing and add the co-ordinates in the co-ords field.
Once co-ordinates have been added the template {{coord missing}} should be removed from the article.

Trafford was featured on the main page on the 12th October and was viewed 13,800 on the day (27,100 times over 4 days).
The project's cleanup listing has been updated with stats from 8 October. As of 14 July, 351 (21.8%) of our articles need a clean-up, this has risen to 447 out of 1689 (26.5%). Although this is disappointing, it reflects a more widespread use of tags on articles to indicate what needs attention rather than a decline in the standard of this project's articles.

Hi again, I've moved your comment back here to make it easier to follow since I'm watching this page anyway. There really needs to be citations in the table rather than just elsewhere in the article because otherwise it isn't clear what is cited and what isn't. I don't have a copy of any of the magazines you list so I can't add the required refs including which issue it is, page numbers etc. Please add an inline ref for the number of Class 150 and Class 180 units, where they are being cascaded from, and, in the case of the 180, that it might be subleased from NXEC. All the information for the table that I made, is from the paragraph just underneath it. I put the table there just to give a simplified version of the paragraph. It made sense to me, and to other people that I have just asked, so please are sources that are already there, really necessary on a table that was just there as a simplified version with pictures. That isn't true though, the paragraph below doesn't mention Class 150s, nor does the source you cite as doing so. It is essential that it is clear where information has come from, if there aren't references in the table then it isn't clear and if it isn't clear where information comes from then it'll find itself removed. Co-ordinates
Just to let you know that a bot is currently sub-dividing the articles with missing co-ordinate data into sub-categories for ease of use. You can now find the articles by looking at the categories for each area as — East, North, South and West. From the discussions it looks like only the co-ordinates in the title area are being used by external sites so articles with multiple co-ordinates are not being handled correctly as yet.

Just to say thanks for all the effort put in by members on articles covering the Yorkshire area and to wish everyone a happy Christmas. It is time to take a break and to spend some time with family and friends. May be even to indulge yourself in the food and drink that abounds at this time of year or even make that occasional visit to a church. What ever you do over the festive season enjoy it and see you next year.
Though if you are at a loose end then many of you will be getting some new toys to play with which can be used to enhance wiki articles. Those new digital cameras can be used to get photographs for some of the articles which are currently without and for which the Geograph site has nothing suitable. May be it is a new PC that you just need to play with then spend some time checking out the watchlist for vandalism which tends to go unnoticed when there are fewer regular editors around. It may even be a book which can be used to add references to an article. May be you want to do something different then try creating spoken articles see the Spoken article project.

November has been a successful month, with lots of progress made on articles, and more work in the pipe-line:
Promoted articles:
Scout Moor Wind Farm is England's largest onshore wind farm. Although it was opposed by environmentalists, the wind farm was opened on 26 September 2008 and provides enough power for 40,000 homes.
The River Irwell runs 39 miles from its source in Lancashire until it joins with the River Mersey. The river was important in the Industrial Revolution, and was left poluted with industrial waste and lifeless.
The Bridgewater Canal is currently a GA nominee and the Scout Moor Wind Farm is under scrutiny at WP:FAC. Please keep an eye on these articles and if any issues are raised in their reviews help to address them. Hopefully, next month we can report on two more promoted articles!

Citations
Citations are a necessity to give credence to the articles that we produce, so that the facts given can be verified. One of the templates that is used for this is {{Cite book}} to give details of books used for creating the articles. There has been some changes to the template that we should be aware of and make changes accordingly when editing articles. The id= field should no longer be used to give the ISBN number for a book instead use the isbn= parameter. The page= and pages= parameters now have the p. or pp. automatically inserted and so we should just put the page number in the fields. Use page= for a single page and pages= for multiple pages. If the insertion of p. or pp. is not required then use nopp=true to suppress this. Note that the number of pages in a book is not specified using these fields and at the moment a new parameter is being discussed to cover this.

Hope everyone enjoyed the festive season and are not feeling too worse for ware. At the start of a new year we all look back at what has happened in the last year and look forward to the coming year. It is time to take stock of what has happened in the last year well we have managed to get some priority articles selected and to get this newsletter in place to keep members up to date on what is happening. Articles have been tagged and assessed, a watchlist of these has been set up for members to keep track of changes to those articles that the project is interested in. So over all great steps have been made in the last year and thanks to everyone for the efforts put in. Looking forward it is time to make some targets for the coming year. If anyone has any ideas for what we should be doing in the coming year then please share them on the project talk page.
The project is now subscribed to a clean-up listing which lists articles tagged with various clean-up tags that need attention. The listing is refreshed by a bot on a regular basis.
Monitor Use the watchlist to keep an eye on changes to the project's articles so that vandalism and spamming can be removed as quickly as possible.
Infoboxes Many of our articles would benefit from the addition of an appropriate infobox.
The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Scout Moor Wind Farm
Scout Moor Wind Farm is England's largest onshore wind farm. Although it was opposed by environmentalists, the wind farm was opened on 26 September 2008 and provides enough power for 40,000 homes.
The B of the Bang is the sculpture that was erected to commemorate the 2002 Commonwealth Games and for a while was the largest sculpture in the UK. And because of safety concerns, it may be dismantled.
Current nominations: January looks set to be very busy, with Chadderton, Cine City, Withington, and Nico Ditch at WP:GAN, the Greater Manchester portal up for Featured Portal status, and Sale a Featured Article Candidate. Please keep an eye on these articles and if any issues are raised in their reviews help to address them.
Abram featured in the DYK section of the front page last month. For details of the DYKs by the project that have appeared on the main page, see Did you know?
The project has a new tool, a watchlist of all our project's articles. This should help us keep an eye on them and spot new editors who might want to join our project. Also, Jza84 has developed a map of WP:GM's GAs and FAs. It shows a gap in coverage in the north west of the county, something we should try to change.
WikiProject Greater Manchester is still the leading local British WikiProject! As far as Featured and Good content goes, our lead is extending, with 10 and 16 more FAs than Yorkshire and London respectively, and 13 and 14 more GAs than Yorkshire and London! If you see an article that you think deserves to be a GA, don't hesitate to nominate it at WP:GAC!
WT:GM: The project's talk page is a forum for discussion and to keep up to date with the latest project developments and initiatives put it on your watchlist! Recently there have been discussions on articles to be deleted, the congestion charge, how to get members involved and working together, and plenty of other stuff.

Two of our aims were crossed off as Scout Moor Wind Farm became an FA, and Radcliffe, Greater Manchester a GA. If you think you can help improve an article, be bold and get editing! on reading some information on the Blackburn to Chorley line, i must have miss read the passage about the railway line going through the area. The evidence in this text that i read did indicate a station at Hartwood, however i cannot find any more information on it, so it must not of existed. WikiProject Greater Manchester February Newsletter, Issue XIV[edit]
With the new(ish) year, I think it's right to look back over the year just gone. Last year was massive for our project, with lots of successes building on a successful 2007. In terms of featured content, we became the leading wikiproject in 2007, but 2008 saw us cement our status as one of the UK's leading wikiprojects: having started the year with most FAs (two more than London and Yorkshire), but falling behind in terms of GAs, we now have more FAs and GAs than any project under WP:UKGEO. While our aim is to improve all articles related to Greater Manchester, not collect trophies, we now lead the field by a long way and everyone deserves to feel proud for their part.
We've had articles featured on the main page, both in DYK? and as today's Featured Article, but success is more than a matter of numbers; the project has grown into a community where editors join together to provide information and improve Wikipedia. A great example of this is the work our project did on Denshaw. Back in April, it was targeted by vandals and as a result was featured in national news. We stepped in and improved and protected the article, showing what WP:GM is capable of. This is undoubtedly the noisiest project in the UK and it's strength comes from the wide range of interests of its many members. We've even been so successful that we were accused of forming a claque.
During 2008, our numbers have increased and, while some have left, we've welcomed many strong editors who will help bring the project more success. With so much emphasis on Good and Featured articles, it's sometimes easy to forget that a lot of effort goes into articles that don't get recognition. The table below shows that the number of B-class articles has increased since the start of 2008, and that the proportion of stub-class articles under our project has gone down.
My own experience of Wikipedia has been positive and enjoyable, especially due to WP:GM. I've worked on interesting subjects with nice people, and hopefully the experience is similar for others. We've covered subjects as varied and interesting as castles, mummies, computers, Olympic swimmers, and wind farms, stuff I probably wouldn’t know about if it wasn’t for Wikipedia. I enjoy being a part of this project, and as we approach the WP:GM's second birthday (24 February) I'm sure it will continue to go from strength to strength in 2009.

Nico Ditch stretches from Ashton-under-Lyne to Stretford and according to legend was dug in a single night to defend against the Danes.

Orphan articles
Members may have noticed a new spate of article tagging by bots in the last month. A large number (over 250) of articles belonging to the project have been tagged with the {{Orphan}} template indicating that there are no or few incoming links to the article. It would be helpful if members tried to reduce the number of tagged articles by introducing wikilinks into related articles so that there is a minimum of three links to each of the orphaned articles. Once the links are in place the tag can be removed and the bot should not re-add the tag. The bot is currently only doing articles with no incoming links.
Portal
Those of you with eagle eyes may have spotted the change made to the Yorkshire Portal link in the project template. Rather than the usual jig-saw image it has been changed to the Yorkshire Rose image to give it a more distinctive look and hopefully raise the profile of the portal.

Cine City in 2004
The Cine City, Withington, was the third cinema to open in Britain and when it closed in 2001 it was the third longest running cinema in England. It was opened in 1912, and demolished in 2008.
Current nominations: As of the completion of this newsletter, there are no GA nominations, but Manchester Small-Scale Experimental Machine and Buckton Castle are at FAC. The articles detail the world's first stored-program computer, and the best preserved castle in Greater Manchester. There's a good chance that one or more of these interesting articles could be promoted, so please keep an eye on them in case there's any way you can help!
Charles White (physician) and Worsley featured in the DYK section of the front page last month (actually, Worsley featured in January but was missed out of the last newsletter!). For details of the DYKs by the project that have appeared on the main page, see Did you know?
The project's cleanup listing has been updated with stats from 24 February 2009. As of 8 October 2008, 447 (26.5%) of 1689 our articles needed a clean-up, this has risen slightly to 455 out of 1809 (25.2%). This is encouraging as the proportion has gone down, and indicates the standard of the project's articles are steadily improving. While the high-profile successes of GAs and FAs are important, the project's aim is to improve all GM-related articles.

Sister projects
In an attempt to encourage communication between related wikiprojects, or to at least raise awareness, this section is dedicated to the important goings on of WP:Merseyside and WP:Cheshire, our sister projects and the only other user groups dedicated to improving articles in North West England.
WP:CHES – After a period of low activity, the project has picked up recently, with initiatives (such as beginning a newsletter and sending a questionnaire to its member) to encourage greater participation from its members. This has paid dividends with two GAs being promoted in February and greater activity in general.
WP:MERSEY – After being set-up in September 2008, the project is experiencing a period of lowish activity. While the project has a handful of FAs and GAs, most of its articles are unassessed; assessing requires no familiarity with a subject, so any help WP:GM members can lend would be greatly appreciated.
Other news
There is a meet-up scheduled for 14 March in Manchester for anyone interested. It is not organised by WP:GM and is open to all wikipedians. More details can be found here.

Further runs of the bot to tag articles with the {{coord missing}} template have been made during the last month. This has resulted in a significant number of the project's articles being tagged as needing coordinate data adding. At the time of writing there are 719 articles assigned to the Yorkshire categories with more expected as the bot moves articles from the United Kingdom and England categories into the county categories. It would be good if we could get the number down as when the co-ordinates are in place the article is available to other providers such as Google to display on maps. The best way of doing this is to complete the appropriate field(s) in the infobox template, if there is no template then consider adding one and killing two birds with one stone.

Article tagging
This month I thought that I would focus on article tagging. Article tagging is the means of identifying that an article is within the scope of the project. This is done by placing the project template {{WikiProject Yorkshire}} on the talk page of an article below any existing project banners. Some pages have a number of banners and can get very cluttered, if this is the case then a shell is used to wrap the templates together and collapse them down to a single line. The main shells in use are {{WikiProjectBannerShell}} and {{WikiProjectBanners}} and any new template should be added inside the shell template. There is no longer a requirement to add the 'nested=yes' parameter to the Yorkshire template when doing this as it will be ignored.
Why tag, you may ask, the reason is to be able to locate relevant articles among all of Wikipedia's articles. If article 'Foo' is relevant to Yorkshire then, unless it is tagged, no one in the project will know it exists unless they happen to stumble across it. The odds are against this happening so tagging makes it easily identifiable to project members.
Once an article has been tagged it can be assessed to see what quality and importance it is to the project. This is done using the assessment parameters to the template, 'class=' and 'importance=', you can leave these to more experienced people to pick-up and assign. The results of this are shown in the statistics table on the left of the newsletter. Tagging also makes the articles appear on the project watchlist, article alerts log and clean-up listing when they are refreshed by the appropriate bot. It also provides readers with a point of contact if they wish to discuss the article in more detail and no responce has been received on the article's talk page or a wider audience is required on the discussion.
I would therefore encourage members to add the project template to the talk pages of articles they find that are relevant to the project so the rest of us know that it exists. You can also tag templates, categories etc. as these are all relevant to maintenance of the articles in the scope of the project. Vandalism on a template can affect a large number of articles so it needs watching.

Sorry there's not been a newsletter for three months, it's not that there hasn't been anything to say but that there almost hasn't been time to say it...
On 20 March 2009 Manchester was "today's Featured Article" and received over 44,000 visitors. This was the culmination of about 2 years of effort from a lot of editors who found the article in this state before the founding of the project. Along with Greater Manchester, it's our flagship article and for it to reach the mainpage is a great achievement. It was an incredible collaborative effort and shows what the project is capable of, and since then we have gone from strength to strength. The Manchester Small-Scale Experimental Machine was Today's Featured Article on 30 May, with 33,000 visitors.
Promoted articles:
Carrington Moss is an 1,100 acres (450 ha) peat bog in Trafford; in the 19th century, it was reclaimed to be used agriculturally and for the disposal Manchester's waste, and is still used for farming.
Manchester Mummy is about Hannah Beswick, whose macabre fear of being buried alive lead to her demanding that her body was kept above ground and checked periodically for signs of life.
The town of Sale in Trafford was probably founded in the Anglo-Saxon period and is best known as the home of physicist J. P. Joule the founding place and former home of and Sale Sharks rugby club.
Cheadle Hulme is a suburb of Stockport that formed from several small hamlets, rather than growing around a church which was usual for medieval villages. (also Stockport's first GA!)
Mellor hill fort is the only Iron Age hill fort in Greater Manchester and was only discovered in the 1990s.
Partington, in Trafford, is a town and civil parish that was until the Manchester Ship Canal opened in 1894, a mainly agrarian community. With the opening of the canal, Partington became a major coal port and following the Second World War was expanded as an overspill estate for deprived parts of Manchester.
With all the project's success, we must be careful not to become complacent. In March, David Beckham was delisted as a Good Article because it lacked enough references and was poorly written in parts. Improving an article and getting it reviewed for GA is a lot of effort and it's a real shame to see the article delisted, but a reminder that our role as an article writer is two-fold: once we improve them, we have an obligation to maintain them. Beckham is the kind of person who is regularly in the news, so the article will get a lot of attention and need regular updating, and it was written by members of WP:FOOTBALL, but let's take it as a reminder of what's needed from us.

Recently there have been discussions on articles to be deleted, the congestion charge, how to get members involved and working together, and plenty of other stuff.

Over the past three months, we've succeeded in our aims of bringing Eccles and Worsley to GA status, thanks largely to the seemingly inexhaustible Parrot of Doom. Recently another aim was added: bringing Stockport to GA standard. It's currently C-class and has some well developed sections. It will be a difficult task, but worthwhile considering it's Greater Manchester's third largest settlement. Also, the importance of bringing Salford to GA has been emphasised; it's currently B-class and should be the easiest of our aims to accomplish, although it's been there for a long time. Let's see if we can put this one to rest soon.
The project compared
Over the past three months, WP:LOND and WP:YORK have had a massive upsurge in the number of articles under their auspices. And interestingly, WP:YORKS has had an upsurge in GAs (10), and WP:LOND has had an increase in both GAs and FAs (8 and 10 respectively), closing down the gap with WP:GM. Although WP:DERB appears to have lost a GA, one of their articles was incorrectly tagged; however Derwent Valley Mills is being prepared to become a Good Article candidate, and hopefully will be the project's first. With the recent retirement of Ddstretch and Espresso Addict, WP:CHES has lost two of its most active contributors, but is still managing to produce good articles such as list of castles in Cheshire (FL) and John Douglas (now a Good Article candidate). The majority of WP:MRSY's articles are now assessed and will hopefully go from strength to strength.
There are now 48 active members of WikiProject Greater Manchester (with a further 17 members inactive since 1 September 2008) as 2 new members have joined the project since the start of March:

Reminders...
Images! There are some good images around, but more are still needed if we're going to get a "lead/static image in every infobox of every town in the county"! The requested photographs category lists some of the articles needing images.
WP:YORKS is a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 6113 last month to 6344 on May 30th). We have recently overtaken WP:LONDON which has 6283 articles. WP:GM has the lead in FAs at 38 out of a total number of 1850 articles. In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 42 is just behind WP:GM with 44.
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.
To bring all other top priority articles (currently 15 with 2 at FA) to at least Good article status

Browsers
According to the article Usage share of web browsers the percentage of people using the Mozilla Firefox browser has increased steadily since 2004 and it now stands at 22.56%. The percentage of Wikipedia editors using Firefox is probably considerably higher because the Firefox browser has a number of advantages for editors. Not least of these is the add-on that lets you right click on a web page to get a Cite Web pop up on the menu. WPCITE allows you easily to create a citation template. This makes the laborious task of filling in web citation templates (almost) a thing of the past.
Another advantage of Firefox is the ability to use wikiEd which is a full-featured Wikipedia-integrated text editor that adds enhanced text processing functions to edit pages. And there is a spell checker Currently, wikEd works under Firefox, SeaMonkey, Safari, and Google Chrome, but not under Internet Explorer and Opera.
Mention of these other browsers reminds me that not all browsers render pages in the same way. What appears to be a beautiful layout in one browser can be rendered as a tangled mess of text and images by another. As most browsers can be downloaded for free, it is worth having several on your computer just to check the appearance of articles. Bear in mind that many people who use Wikipedia just for reference will have only Internet Explorer, and possibly quite an old version, so some of the latest "bells and whistles" may not work for them.
My apologies to old hands who already know all this, but to new users it really is worthwhile looking into the possibilities of different browsers on Wikipedia.

Cheadle Hulme is a suburb of Stockport that formed from several small hamlets, rather than growing around a church which was usual for medieval villages, although there is evidence of activity dating back to the Bronze Age.
Did you know that after the collapse of the Broughton Suspension Bridge in 1831, the British military introduced the order to "break step" when soldiers were crossing a bridge? Featured on the Did you know? section on 6 June 2009.

Recently Salford was turned into a disambiguation page with the article on the settlement moved to Salford, Greater Manchester. This will hopefully make it clearer to the reader that Salford, Greater Manchester, and the City of Salford are not the same thing. Just remember to specify which Salford next time you're adding a wikilink to an article!
Although it wasn't technically this month, list of people from Wigan was created on 2 July, and any help populating the list with sourced names would be great. It's one of nine such list for the boroughs in Greater Manchester (Bury doesn't have a list yet) and they all need populating.
Remember to be careful about editors claiming places are still in Lancashire, today I had to revert someone insisting that Leigh isn't in Greater Manchester and recently the Friends of Real Lancashirevoiced their dislike of the Lancashire article so this issue isn't going to go away.
Just remember that the project watchlist can help us catch vandalism and is worth checking from time to time.

The project compared
In June, WP:LON has a massive upsurge in the number of FAs, with some great work by Iridescent in promoting a swathe of bridge articles to FA. WP:YORKS has over taken WP:GM in terms of GAs, and for the first time since June 2008 (when WP:LON had the lead), WP:GM is not the project with most GAs. In June, the Derwent Valley Mills became a GA and is WP:DERBY's first GA although there are more likely candidates in the pipeline. WP:CHES continues to perform strongly considering it has few active editors, and in June John Douglas (architect) was promoted to FA and there is currently a FLC. In June, there was discussion at WT:MERSEY about how to generate more audited content (ie: GAs and FAs) and since then one article has been promoted to GA, there is one GAC and other articles being prepared for GAC.

Hi, this file was transferred to Commons a while back, and I have just deleted it, and thought you should know. I did this because there is no freedom of panorama for 2D works in the UK, and the image does not meet de minimis guidelines for inclusion of copyrighted works.

WP:YORKS is a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 6,538 last month to 6,651 on July 27th). WP:LONDON have had a major tagging spree by a bot and now have 12,595 articles which is twice as may as this project. WP:GM has the lead in FAs at 39 out of a total number of 1,946 articles. In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 46 is just ahead of WP:GM who have 45.

This month we focus on a recent requirement for images in articles—that of supplying alternative text for each of the images. This has been raised in FAC debates and is now a requirement for FA articles and as a result there is a general push to get all images marked-up. For example the {{Infobox UK place}} is currently undergoing changes in preparation for the use of alternative text on its images.
Alternative text is text added to the image mark-up to describe the image to someone who cannot see the image. The alternative text is in addition to the caption and should not duplicate information in the caption. It should be added, without any wikimark-up or line-breaks in it, using the alt= parameter of the image mark-up. For more information on this see WP:ALT.

Salford is Greater Manchester's second city (although it is the wider district which has city status), but for most of its history it was larger and more important than Manchester. The Salford Quays area will become the home of CBBC and BBC Sport in 2011.
The Peak District was the first national park in Britain and spans Cheshire, Derbyshire, Greater Manchester, South Yorkshire, Staffordshire, and West Yorkshire. It was used by the Dam Busters and used as a location for the film based on the story.
Other news:
There's been a lot of article activity in the last month, especially in Wigan-related pages. Wigan is the only borough in Greater Manchester without a GA or FA to its name, and it would be great if this could change. A lot of work has been put into Tyldesley, any and help to get it to GA would be great. There's also been a high-profile new article created: media in Manchester. Pitch in on the talk page if you're interested!

Last month, we achieved our long-standing aim of bringing Salford up to GA status. It's been a fine effort and perhaps we can concentrate on our other objectives, especially getting Stockport, the largest settlement article not to be at least B-class, to GA.

In July, WP:LON almost doubled in scope and now has over 12,000 articles – far more than any other UK county WikiProject. Last month, the Peak District was promoted to GA; the area is mainly in Derbyshire but covers several other counties and is a massive achievement for all involved. WP:CHES continues to perform strongly considering it has few active editors, with one FL promoted in July and another in the pipeline. WP:GM is still the leading UK county project in terms of FAs and by proportion of audited content (ie: GAs and FAs). A lot of effort has gone into producing this project's articles, so let's make sure we keep tags on them and that they don't degrade.

Thanks for uploading File:Grand .png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Summer treasures?
As the summer holiday season draws to a close, it is likely that many of our project Yorkshire members will have visited the Yorkshire coast. Some will have digital photographs stored on their camera cards or have leaflets and guide books about places they have visited. Now is the time to put all that wonderful treasury of information onto Wikipedia, before they all get lost in the run up to Christmas. (Ah yes, I can see supermarkets selling off barbecues to make room for baubles.)
There are two major categories for our coastal venues Category:Coastal settlements in North Yorkshire and Category:Coastal settlements in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Many of the articles in these categories are not kept up to date on a regular basis. Although it has to be said that some of the articles about the more popular resorts are well maintained and regularly watched for vandalism. Some tend to suffer from being overlinked to commercial enterprises but most sit there waiting patiently for a bit of TLC.
Fish and tricks at the seaside
Our own watchlists often become unmanageable after a while, so here is a way to make the task of keeping an eye on specific articles much easier.
You can create your own separate Watchlist for any articles that you are interested in helping to maintain or expand by:
listing the articles on a clean Sandbox page
clicking on "Related changes" in the toolbox area to get a list of recent changes for your adopted articles
copying and pasting the URL displayed on the address bar of your browser to a convenient place, maybe your to do list.
And, of course, you can change the options at the top of the page to display more or fewer changes, as usual.
(This trick works for any special little watchlists that you might like to create!!)

The addition of the popular pages facility to the Yorkshire sidebar last month has thrown light on which of our articles Wikipedia readers actually access most. The first month for which there is complete data is September when Arctic Monkeys were in pole position with an average 6,869 hits daily. In second place with 5,781 was Wuthering Heights followed by Dracula with 4,996. The table is sortable on a number of attributes but the sort takes a while to complete.
As the page has a link to current data it is possible to see and compare current raw data for daily hits. So far the October statistics (up to October 20th) reveal that Dracula with 5,474 daily hits is well ahead of seasonal favourite Guy Fawkes with 4,411, and last month's favourite, Arctic Monkeys, are pushed into third position with a daily hit score of 4,259.
Three football clubs Leeds United A.F.C., Hull City A.F.C. and Middlesbrough F.C.get into the top 25 along with several pages about literary topics such as the Brontë family and their works. Television personalities are well represented, Jeremy Clarkson (4,559) is 4th overall in the list and Judi Dench is 23rd with a hit score of 1,577. Do the history topics in the top 25 suggest homework assignments?
It will be interesting to monitor the rise and fall of pages on the list which will also suggest where our efforts as a project might best be directed for maximum impact.

WP:YORKS is a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 7,738 last month to 7,870 on November 29th). WP:GM has the lead in FAs at 43 out of a total number of 2,045 articles. In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 52 is just ahead of WP:GM who have 51.
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.

Christmas Greetings
Welcome to all our active members. This is the twentieth newsletter, the Christmas 2009 issue, and by the time it reaches members there should still be time to drop some helpful hints about seasonal gifts for Wikipedians. The obvious things are computer and digital stuff, and books. (On Wikipedia socks are only for those with a sad identity crisis.) What sort of things? Well, computer stuff can be anything from a high spec laptop, through wireless networks, antivirus software, graphics software to memory cards and memory sticks. Digital cameras are coming down in price and an MP3 player can double up as a memory stick.
A useful book for apprentice Wikipedians is, "Wikipedia: The Missing Manual" by John Broughton, it's full of tips, tricks and explanations and can be bought at about half the price on the cover if you shop around. "The World and Wikipedia: How We are Editing Reality" by Andrew Dalby has just one five star review on Amazon, and the review of "The Wikipedia Revolution: How a Bunch of Nobodies Created the World's Greatest Encyclopedia" by Andrew Lih says "it's a book that will certainly make you think, but it will also leave you frustrated!". It might be a better idea to go for a reference book about your next favourite sport, hobby or indulgence. A good atlas always comes in useful as does a thesaurus, for when you come across the seventh time a word has been used in a paragraph! Or the good old phrase "is the home of" turns up yet again.
Stocking fillers include pens and pencils, to replace the ones which fall on the floor and are never to be found again, and notebooks of all shapes and sizes. A ream of printer paper and the odd ink cartridge might be useful too.

Thanks to the contributions of our many members and supporters, WP:YORKS has become a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 7,870 last month to 7,888 on December 16th). In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 53 is just ahead of WP:GM who have 51. WP:GM has the lead in FAs at 43 out of a total number of 2,048 articles.

Every month, two articles will be selected for the project to improve, one B-class and one Start-class. The January 2010 articles are an arbitrary choice of the newsletter editors but members will be asked to nominate future articles for improvement.

Hi, I noticed that you undid my reversion to East Coast (train operating company) without adding in any citations. I have now added {{citation needed}} tags for those items. Please do not remove these unless you replace them with appropriate citations. If you don't think they are required, please discuss the matter either here or on the article's talk page.
