It's been removed for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so! If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Logical Cowboy (talk) 20:54, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"I am the reference"[edit]

Hello, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia so we don't use human beings as references but instead published sources. I warmly encourage you to set up an Wikipedia account and learn more about the community. Logical Cowboy (talk) 21:42, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Understandable, however you neglect that you reverted the article to use a reference that is not primary and in fact is grossly plain wrong. It is not a primary reference. You object to me saying "I am the reference" however you are using it out of context to ignore the fundamental issue of citing trash as a reference. So you don't accept my experience of living my life daily in Mexico and her culture yet you allow an obviously garbage reference wsimply because some person at some point typed it on some unauthoritative website and having absolutely no basis whatsoever to be called a reference. Managing an encyclopedia is hard work, my sympathies, however when dealing with culture it is up to the editors to evaluate their references as to being genuine or in a vulgar manner, "Garbage in", and in this particular case embarrassingly stereotypical for a very minor segment of the readership, which in fact is generally is an opportunistic practice and has *nothing* to do with general tipping practices customs for the Mexican people, which is the subject of the article. If you have "garbage in" non-primary sourced references, you are fostering substandard quality. "I am the reference" in its proper context would state "I live in Mexico throughout the country and have interacted in my culture many thousands of times to see that the current entry in wiki is ridiculously embarrassing and misleading at best." If wikipedia doesn't allow unreferenced statements, why do I find [reference needed] comments throughout it? This case is no different. Wish I had toime to be a more active member. So, all I need to do is retype what I wrote on a webpage "My journal of life in Mexico" and reference that and you would probably welcome it. Unfortunately I have no time to rewrite it and I cannot find my text you shelved somewhere with the best intentions, leaving the wrong prior text, but to anyone who lives in Mexico, obviously doing more harm than good by disseminating innacurate information and using what amounts to someone else's "I am a reference" typed into a website with the exception that they truly were not addressing the fundamental subject of this wiki article with all the negative consequences to the wiki community and readership and reputation that may result.

If there is grossly incorrect material, it would be fine for you to delete it if you give an explanation in the edit summary or on the talk page. Again, I warmly encourage you to learn about the Wikipedia community. But there are other places where you can blog your personal experiences--and lots of people will appreciate that. I recommend [1] for one. Logical Cowboy (talk) 22:41, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ed., Thank you for the suggestion. I am not very interested in blogging due to lack of time. In this case the reverted entry reads like a travel guide entry for a certain small fraction of ignorant travelers and if I believed in conspiracies I'd suggest it were related by someone who wanted a raise (in their tips) from rich travelers. Important to note the tipping article is not a travel guide article at all, but rather meant to describe more generally tipping customs, and that is why the current reference fails doubly.

If you can provide me my text to copy - paste for my use (no, not right back in, as you have explained it won't pass your bar) that would be appreciated, since there is little motivation to do anything after the loss of my time investment, of course it gets to be old and not a priority. If you would be kind to do that, I might actually scare up a few more better quality reference links (not very hard in this case!)and improve wikipedia in a way you could be quite satisfied.
