Information icon Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to IBM 1620. Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include, but are not limited to, links to personal websites, links to websites with which you are affiliated (whether as a link in article text, or a citation in an article), and links that attract visitors to a website or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam guideline for further explanations. Because Wikipedia uses the nofollow attribute value, its external links are disregarded by most search engines. If you feel the link should be added to the page, please discuss it on the associated talk page rather than re-adding it.

May 2018[edit]

Please fix the citation(s) you added to UNIVAC 1101. The last names of authors are set to initials. If you were using some kind of software to help you add the citations, the software is faulty. Please review and correct all edits you made with the faulty software. Jc3s5h (talk) 20:18, 22 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It was WP own automatic citation.--89.25.210.104 (talk) 20:20, 22 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand what that means. If you would like to explain it step-by-step, perhaps I can offer a suggestion. In any case, lots of automation is available that works in some, but not all, situations. The editor who adds or changes information is responsible for the behavior of whatever automation the editor uses, and should either correct any problems the automation causes, or just not edit. I did some poking around. VisualEditor uses something called Citoid to grab information about sources using a URL, ISBN, etc. One problem is the dates: the Citoid developers have decided to always use ISO 8601, but Wikipedia usually doesn't use that format. (See Help:Citation Style 1#Dates.) Also, that format only allows Gregorian calendar dates; if you ever needed to cite a religious publication, or an old publication, that uses the Julian calendar, that format is just false.

Another problem is that they are "scraping" data from various sources, and if the source makes a change to how they arrange their data, Citoid gathers incorrect data. They don't seem to do a very good job of keeping up with the changes from the various sources.

I personally give VisualEditor a grade of F and refuse to use it. Jc3s5h (talk) 21:20, 22 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, in Source mode date is correctly parsed.--89.25.210.104 (talk) 23:21, 22 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Philips PASCAL[edit]

Thanks for adding the mention of the Philips PASCAL with refs. I see it uses more transistors and diodes than vacuum tubes, so not clear that list is the ideal place for it. Do you have enough to write an article on it? That would be cool. Dicklyon (talk) 01:53, 14 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

On nlwiki (Google translation) it says that the tubes were in the CPU ("CPU consisted of 2000 electron tubes"), and heerdebeer.org ref indicates that computer "used radio tubes for a number of components of arithmetic elements" (also there's picture of circuit panel of the arithmetical unit in PHILiPS TECHNICAL REVIEW vol 23 no 1 - fig. 14, p. 16).
After some thought - PASCAL situation is similar to that of IBM SSEC (on Mechanical_computer list), so I think it could be moved to transistorized computers list.
My English writing skill isn't good enough to write longer sentences (article would be of lesser quality than Google translation of PASCAL refs/nlwiki). --89.25.210.104 (talk) 20:24, 14 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Reply[edit]

Hello 89.25.210.104, I am replying to the message you left me on my talk page.

You are correct about the reason I removed your edit earlier. In your edit of Halcyon (TV series), you wrote: "all available for free on Halcyon page", which I felt was incontrovertibly promotional material.

Wikipedia absolutely forbids promotional material, and many members of the community take the issue very seriously. Early in my wikipedia career, I very nearly received a block for writing something similar to what you wrote on a page about a company. I would suggest you take a look at WP:NOT, which outlines some of the things things which are typically forbidden on this site.

I would also suggest making an account here if you are interested in making additional contributions. That way you can tack your edits and gain additional rights as a community member.

All the best, Triangleman3 (talk) 01:24, 3 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • I've copyedited the page in question to account for your recent points. Please try to find additional citations for your second point. Triangleman3 (talk) 18:05, 3 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Two points:
    • 1. Typically you should try to write in full sentences when editing. I can't find anything to support this in the rules, but having run-on sentences which are exacerbated by excessive parenthetical fragments feels wrong.
    • 2. I removed "available online in 80 countries" and "through the paid Halcyon VR app" because these are borderline promotional. "available online in 80 countries" is a statement which is suggesting to the reader that they will be able to purchase the product in their country. "through the paid Halcyon VR app" might be promotional in that it is alerting the reader that they can go to the website and buy the product. Triangleman3 (talk) 00:43, 4 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Your point is noted, I might consider making the changes. You have a good point about television shows, but that kind of thing is covered in the rules. Take a look at WP:NOT. Specifically, we are told "Wikipedia treats creative works (including, for example, works of art or fiction, video games, documentaries, research books or papers, and religious texts) in an encyclopedic manner, discussing the development, design, reception, significance, and influence of works in addition to concise summaries of those works."

I think that television shows fall under this category. We can, and should, have pages about notable televisions shows. However, we should also be careful not to run up against the notion that this is an encyclopedia and that these shows should be summarized concisely.
